I think Muurrrr still has some name value with Lesnar fans. They’ll tune in to watch him in the hopes of him earning a rubber match with Brock. I also think the post-116 euphoria will prevent Zuffa from dipping into the 300s anytime soon.
I don’t think anybody cares about a rubber match between Mir and Brock at this point outside of Mir. Maybe this would be the case before, but after losing to Brock and then losing to Carwin who just lost to Brock I’m sure most would just assume Mir would get smashed again.

According to Dana...
the UFC was contractually obligated to give him a fight(s) from the purchase of Pride.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
That’s a lie from Dana. Hunt was threatening to sue over losing the fights on his Pride contract when Zuffa took over, and they just decided to give him a fight. It was cheaper than going to court. Hunt is flat broke and desperate for fights at this point.

Did Melvin
Give any reason as to why he called out Stephens? Or was he just looking for a match up that would be exciting?
Compared to recent cards, I don’t find this one to be that interesting. A couple good fights, but no depth.
When you consider how stacked 117, 118, and 121 are
This is a damn good show.
The Dos Equis guy wishes he was Brock Lesnar.

I actually don’t like that they put Lytle vs Serra II together. The fight will probably be fun to watch, but Lytle is best served testing prospects/being a gatekeeper to see who is good enough to fight on the next level. Serra is still pretty solid, and there are good opponents at Welterweight for him as well.

So much...
Nog! So much jui-jitsu!!! So much…..confusion for the casual fans!!!!! If nog loses i’ll aoki.
Main events
Of PPV cards should atleast be title eliminators or title fights. Either way i hope Nog was sick the first time and frank keeps getting pushed back into obscurity.

those are pretty much all accounted for already
-155 Title: Edgar/Penn 118. 155 Eliminator: Maynard/Florian 118 (not a headliner, couldn’t sell enough PPVs)
-170 title: GSP Kos in december. 170 title eliminators: Fitch/Alves 117 (and Dana ain’t main-eventing fitch), Shields/Kampann (Shields can’t headline YET).
-185 title: Silva Sonnen 117. Title Eliminators: Belcher/Maia UFN 22 (perfect FN headline, but not for a PPV), Marquardt/Palhares 118 (not enough name value to headline)
-205 Title: Shogun’s Injured. 205 Eliminator: Rampage/Machida November UFC 123 (likely headlining, maybe should have been made in time for 119 but didn’t happen). Rashad’s waiting for Shogun. Jones’ name ain’t big enough yet. Bader/Lil Nog is a good co-main for 119. nothing else possible
-HW Title: Brock/Cain 121 HW Eliminator: Nelson/Dos Santos 117 (could it be a headliner? eeeeehhhh, i dunno)
All the notes are based on if the fight could really come close to selling a satisfactory # of PPV buys.
So that’s all the fights that could have remotely possibly headlined 119 other than Mir/Nog. The title fights are all headlining, and most of the title eliminators, other than Rampage/Machida, are not big-name enough to be headliners. Rampage Machida probably should have been made in time to headline 119, but Shogun’s injury made the top 205ers need to take some time to think about their decisions.
The only other guys who could possibly sell enough PPVs on their own outside of a title or #1 contender fight are Randy Couture and Forrest Griffin. Randy/Toney could theoretically maybe have sold a satisfactory # of buys, but would it really be any better than Mir/Nog? and Forrest is recovering waiting for an opponent.
Frankly, Mir (see what i did there) is still well known enough among casuals from the Brock fights to satisfactorily sell a PPV when paired with Nog who has a good hardcore fanbase. There really wasn’t any other options other than to not have a show, but that’s no fun.

You had a rec from me....
Until the end. I just don’t agree with you and your decision to leave that bad joke in there. :P

you get a rec for not rec’ing due to the Mir thing. and also for realizing that I did in fact type that initially without thinking about the joke, then decided to leave it anyway. lol

Mark Hunt fighting in he UFC seems strange....
What I mean is…UFC says they are meeting terms of a contract from PRIDE, however it has been several years since the buy out, he has fought 3 times since. The fights were all against big names too, he hasn’t been slumming. But he is coming to the UFC with a 5 fight losing streak since 2006. The UFC has cut guys who had FOTN but lost. SO….I would think any contract he had…would have been void since he took fights in other promotions and he has such a horrible record.
I’m not trolling on Mark Hunt I think he is a Legit fighter, the 5 losses are against solid guys. I just think it really hurts the UFC image of saying they only promote top level figters….
Well they signed 1-0 Brock and 0-0 Toney and put them on the main cards didn’t they?
Mark’s fight is in the prelims and the UFC hasn’t made a big deal about it. I think it’s fine. Mark will serve as a capable gatekeeper, if nothing else.
by Flying Gogoplata on Jul 25, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Yep.
This is an opportunity for them to fulfill a contractual obligation and get a new prospect a big name win on his resume. Or conversely, if Hunt wins, it gives them a big name who they can polish up and try to sell with a comeback angle.
Think of Hunt’s opponent…If you lose..its to a guy who is 5-6 with 5 straight losses…so you look like horrible…If you win…its over a guy who is 5-6 with 5 straight losses…
Dana said Hunt had a prexisting contract from when the UFC bought PRIDE.. what the terms are is anyones guess.
by sadface on Jul 25, 2010 6:25 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The UFC can cut anyone who loses IN THE UFC. They can’t cut guys for fights outside of the organization.
The deal with Hunt seems to be the UFC signed him contingent on him making weight, and Mark never bothered to make weight until now. Who knows why the contract was left open for so long, but it appears that it was and this is the result.
You know I just realized we’re about to repeat the same line of discussion as in these threads:

This looks like a pretty solid card.
Although I have my doubts that either will win, I’ll be pulling for the Nog brothers.
I also hope Melvin smashes Jeremy Stevens racist teeth out for good measure.
Regardless, its a good card overall.

This will do better than people expect. Mir is going to shit talk the…shit out of this one.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
Underdogs
Round-robin parlay bet the 4 underdogs in the first 4 matches. I think that bet has the potential to make a nice profit.
