Quote of the Day: Fedor Emelianenko: "Sambo Is Great, Jiu Jitsu Is Nothing Special"
"Sambo is great. Jiu-jitsu is nothing special. We went over several jiu-jitsu guys like that before. I lost because of what happened. My loss was caused by my personal mistake in the cage… I lost my head. Wanted to finish it all as soon as possible."
"As far as the rumours about my last fight being set up... I was asked about it many times already. I will never go against my conscience and never betray my country like that. Money doesn't matter that much to me that I could lie to people. Since I lost to Werdum, it was meant to be. And I'm thankful to God it happened that way."

Considering the story with Nikolai Davydenko in tennis
now everyone who loses a thing he was heavily favored to win, it raises some eyebrows.

Whatever, both styles originate from Judo anyhow. Fedor should try going to the ADCC sometime and see what happens, maybe he’ll see how “special” Jiu-Jitsu is.

He wanted to participate in last year’s ADCC, but Sheik Tahnoon didn’t want to name the event “ADCCM1”.

What does he mean, go against his country like that?
"an excellent example of why most MMA "journalism" is a joke. Pseudonyms like "toxic" and shitty writing like that dopey article"--- Joe Rogan.
He's referring to some people thinking he threw the fight
and that if he did, it would be a betrayal of his country.
I hadn’t heard many rumors at all about that though, so maybe this was more of an issue in Russia.

If Jiu-jitsu is “nothing special”, then what does that say about him when he got beat by Jiu-jitsu? Way to spit in your own face, Fedor.
I think he was more referring to people
questioning him about not training with more BJJ guys in preparation for Werdum. He’s saying that he didn’t need special BJJ training to avoid a loss, he just made a mental error.
by Scott Haber on Jul 23, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions
that's not a smart thing to say considering he lost to a guy who practices BJJ
if you’re training for someone, you should be training in all aspects they are decent in. not just whatever ones you want.
Probably a translation issue
Actually said something along the lines of Jiu-Jitsu is nothing that I haven’t seen before or, more likely, its nothing that I haven’t fought against and beaten before…
BJJ and Sambo are very similar (but obviously not identical) in so many aspects anyway…

the translation from the russian speaker that I found was this:
Q: Джиу-джитсу – страшная штука?
F: Самбо – страшная штука, – пошутил в ответ Федор. – А в джиу-джитсу нет ничего особенного. Мы уже не одну такую "джитсу" разобрали. Я же проиграл по стечению обстоятельств.
The question about jiu jitsu:
Q: Jiu jitsu, is it a scary thing?
F: “Sambo is scary,” Fedor joked back. “But there’s nothing really special or specific in jiu jitsu. We have already dismantled many of these jitsu guys. I lost because of the flow of circumstances.”

He’s definitely stepped it up a few notches though in the last couple of years. He never used to travel with Rasputin in his corner and mention God in every interview. He used to much more private about his faith.
He is supposed to be deeply religious...
If so, maybe he realized it was foolish not speaking about it.

No matter what bad thing happens, it was God’s will and meant to be. If people can really make themselves believe this, it must make life’s misfortunes a lot easier to deal with. I wish I were capable of such delusions. I’d be happier.

My loss was caused by my personal mistake in the cage… I lost my head.

Agree...as I stated above,
I think he’s responding to questions about his lack of BJJ training before the Werdum fight. By saying BJJ is “nothing special”, I think he’s actually trying to say that he didn’t need any “special” BJJ training for the fight, he just made a mistake.
by Scott Haber on Jul 23, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Or perhaps the actual quote was something like
Werdum’s BJJ is nothing special. i.e. I have beaten lots of BJJ guys…

who else likes werdums chances in the rematch?

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

i give him way more than that
if u think about it before the edgar fight bj had two insanely dominating performances agaisnt kenny florian and diego sanchez
fedor had two wins by knockout before werdum but he honestly looked somewhat lackluster against both rogers and arlovski
if werdum can keep this fight on the ground he’s got a great chance of winning by decision (assuming its a 3 round fight, i dont think he could win a 5 rounder from fedor) or submision, however if fedor keeps it standing hes gonna ko werdum

My Russian isn’t great, but it looks like the “моя” isn’t conjugated properly and as far as I know, “тнэ” isn’t a word. But if “моя тнэ” was replaced with “для моих” then it would read “You want paints for my fingernails.”

Is this really so outlandish?
The guy trains Sambo and made it work tremendously well. He’s got some of the most dramatic submissions in MMA history and yet everyone seems to default to BJJ. I trained BJJ and loved it, but let’s be real here, he might have a point. Especially in the context of combat Sambo which is much more in tune with MMA compared to BJJ.

I agree , besides the whole thing is ridiculous – just because Werdum beat Fedor via submission Jiujitzu is better than Sambo ? When Machida beat Shogun karate was better than muai thai , yet now after the rematch muai thai is better again ?
Werdum showed how being efficient with jitz is relevant , but it doesn’t show that one style is better than the other…
When Machida beat Shogun karate was better than muai thai
i remember that happening very very differently

Most people said that Shogun had solved the Machida puzzle and that Muay Thai > Karate
Side note
Can Karate be implemented with Muay Thai’s high-octane style? Or is it only a counter-attacking martial art?
as far as grappling goes
bjj > sambo. much tighter.

The Combat Sambo Fedor uses
Is just as applicable to MMA, if not more so, than BJJ. Strikes are allowed, and much emphasis is placed on striking in close quarters.
Sport Sambo on the other hand is a completely different animal…

Fedor has been the #1 heavyweight in the world
for 10 years . He’s “earned” the right to say he prefers his style over something else , just like Machida is a karate nuthugger.
Seriously , kudos to Werdum it was a beautiful submission , but I don’t see him staying in the top 5 for more than a few months…
Werdum has been in the top 10 for years
Top 5 is mind boggling especially when he hold victories over 3 (Fedor / Overeem / Big Foot) of the top 4 non UFC HW’s.
hes been borderline
hes not top 5 now though brock, carwin, JDS, cain, and fedor are all above him still and id also probably put mir in front of him although werdum vs mir would be an amazing fight
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
Based on the fact that he beat Fedor it makes sense.
Just like when Edgar jumped to number 1. That doesn’t mean Werdum is the second best in the world, but he legitimately earned the number 2 ranking.
yea but edgar didnt go 2-2 in the ufc and get cut
sure it was a contract dispute but it was still off a loss
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
Edgar also beat the consensus number one fighter in his division.
Both fighters had to jump the guy they beat…
If that doesn’t happen the rankings are beyond stupid.
Should Fedor have dropped to 7?
its really a tough situation
cause the big 4 of the UFC, brock cain carwin and JDS all deserve to be ranked above werdum who deserves to be ranked above fedor who deserves to be ranked at least above carwin, and cain
it creates something of a paradox in the rankings really
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
Look at ranking systems in college football or basketball
Unless the 2 teams were fairly closely ranked to begin with, one does not jump the other, and it is certainly not automatic.
In other words, does anybody seriously think #1 Alabama will be passed in the polls by San Jose State if they lose their opener to them…
Werdum is certainly nowhere near the 2nd best HW…
Its things like this that make me think MMA rankings are, for the most part, pointless.

sherdog hates the ufc
for obvious reasons but their rankings are very biased cause of it
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
They just rank according to recent history. Ladder rankings, I guess. A guy beats a guy, he automatically moves in front of him, past history be damned. It’s simple but waaaay off in the grand scheme.
It’s probably best not to turn this into another rankings discussion though, general because they don’t usually lead much of anywhere. I’m talking about me by the way, not you.

u gotta throw some opinion in there though

Jiu Jitsu has evolved a lot more than Sambo
Werdum has followed the wave of innovations in Jiu Jitsu, Fedor has stuck with the Sambo scene in Russia/Eastern Europe.
It boggles the mind, just watching the difference between ADCC 5 years ago to now, the difference is staggering. We’re wayyy past the days when it was just closed guard, kimura, armbar, triangle, and guillotine. There’s all sorts of crazy guards and crazier submissions these days, and people are still innovating.
Yet
Is there any evidence of that in Werdum’s MMA matches or any other BJJ past champs for that matter?
Deep half guard
I think the recent use of deep half guard to sweep in mma is a good example of recent bjj innovations. He used it against bigfoot silva.

ADCC Championship
means he’s rolling against guys who are using deep half guard, inverted guard etc.
Noguera is the best “jiu jitsu applied to MMA” guy, but Vinny wasn’t exactly wrong when he said Noguera’s pure jiu jitsu is not spectacular (at least by today’s standards). Now don’t get me wrong I’m not ragging on Noguera who I am a big fan of, just like we wouldn’t compare an MMA fighter from 5 years ago to an MMA fighter now, a top BJJ player 5 years ago is not comparable to a top BJJ player today. Noguera was that guy, Werdum won ADCC 2009. Can’t say who would win in MMA, but I’d def take Werdum over Noguera in grappling.

Tapout should print that pic on their next Fedor Tshirt.
(I’m sure the UFC would be fine with that one)
I've rolled with Sambo guys with twice my training time
and usually their defense is really weak, but that was sport-sambo guys.
I am assuming you are a judo guy, which I trained in long before I got into wrestling.
Something you might be able to expand on that I realized is that despite the considerable similarity of techniques in judo, BJJ, JJ, Sambo, catch wrestling and others, the feel when you are defending it is different, due to slightly different hand/limb placements, starting positions, weight distribution and the like.
In other words, the tells I am used to feeling when preparing to defend a submission attempt are different for different styles, even if the technique itself is almost identical. I don’t know about you, but I have found this initially disadvantageous, but later somewhat advantageous once I learned more about different styles.

I’m actually pretty evenly split between Judo and BJJ. I’m only recently training in Judo again after about three years in BJJ and a blue belt for the effort.
I’ve noticed in my limited experience that Sambo guys are brawlers on the ground—lots of aggression. But the guard really always seems to screw them up, and they will be going for americanas or arm-across-windpipe chokes, which is basically always bad, and always gives me an opening for armbars, etc.
I do agree that different games are hard to adjust to. Getting back into Judo was a trip at first, since nobody was doing what I expected on the ground, and I got caught in a few dumb positions early on.
his opinion of bjj
Is irrelevant, this is much ado about nothing. What I wanna know is who & when will he fight next and will it be whoever strikforce throws at him or another hand picked opponent
My translation/interpretation of what Fedor said:
– Джиу-джитсу – страшная штука?
– Самбо – страшная штука, – пошутил в ответ Федор. – А в джиу-джитсу нет ничего особенного. Мы уже не одну такую "джитсу" разобрали. Я же проиграл по стечению обстоятельств.
The first line is someone asking if Jiu-Jitsu is a “terrible/frightening thing”.
The response is essentially "Sambo is a terrible/frightening thing, Fedor joked in response. But in Jiu-Jitsu there is nothing special (that contributed to the loss). We already understood not just one such “jitsu” (I assume he means BJJ player or style here – as in this isn’t the first time he has trained for a dangerous BJJ practitioner). I lost because of a coincidence of circumstances.’
Essentially he is saying that the loss was not a direct result of BJJ being particularly dangerous as he has trained for it in the past, but because he put himself into the situation that resulted in the loss.
