TheUltimateFighter.com Publishes Media-Friendly List of "Best Coverage in the Sport"

Mixed Martial Arts coverage is everywhere these days, and with television shows and Websites springing up almost daily, it's getting hard to figure out how to filter the good from the bad. Below, UltimateFighter.com reviews some of the other top MMA Websites and television shows out there with the best coverage of your favorite sport, in no particular order.
The list was constructed not to help you "filter the good from the bad", but to let you know which media outlets the entities behind the website largely consider to be compliant with their narratives. Generally speaking, they also much prefer you to not be critical of their product. I'll save you the trouble: Sherdog.com isn't listed and neither is this one. I will also say that the inclusion of The Bleacher Report on the list - and, hee haw, the remark that they're "hard hitting" - is downright embarrassing and tells you everything you need to know about their priorities. Ultimately, it's not competency or actual ability they reward; it's fealty, third-party validation and distribution of brand/messages to key audiences.
I understand the role The Ultimate Fighter plays for the UFC and for Spike. Every MMA fan should appreciate how vital it is. It not only keeps the UFC brand in front of two million men ages 18-34 every week, but helps cement the relationship the UFC has with their critically important television partners. For Spike, it's reliable ratings in key demos with content that matches their branding. And that's a hugely important relationship. The rest of MMA hinges on the ability of the UFC and Spike to keep MMA alive, visible and growing on telelvision. Think: what would happen to the UFC if Spike were to drop them? Bad things, to put it mildly. But that doesn't mean I'm going to buy the notion that it's a proving ground for the next generation of elite UFC competitors or that the six-figure contract is in every fighter's best interest or that the fights are more often than not UFC quality. They're not, and frankly, I can't think of an honest adult who could pass a lie detector saying as much.
Living in Washington, DC is instructive in one clear way here. I live in a town inundated with beta males, suffocating political correctness and thought police where the identity ranks are policed with regularity. It's a conformist town. Yet, the dialogue in political journalism and blogging is remarkably more candid than anything in MMA. Criticism of one's own ideas or actions, of one's neighbor or even adversary is an everyday part of the daily churn of media. Why then, in a sport dominated by alpha males both in and out of the cage, is candor such a difficult thing to digest? Where is the courage now? What is everyone so afraid of?
I don't care if this site is or isn't on their list. It won't really affect our traffic either way. We're not here to win industry awards, particularly since they, too, reward fealty. What I do know is this: being critical or offering critical commentary is only symptomatic of hate to the simplest of minds. Whether the MMA world wants to or is ever ready to accept it, honest and thoughtful analysis is now and will forever be a legitimate exercise in modern journalism.
Memo to whoever put that list together: you can't purport to offer readers a list of who is the best when the only defining characteristic among those listed are strategically muted tongues wandering outside issued narratives is deemed out of bounds. If in MMA candor and independence mean ostracism, there is no such thing as a list of "the best". The term ceases to have meaning at that point.
p.s. I updated the last paragraph to more accurately reflect my feelings. There are some good journalists included in that list and I think ESPN's MMA Live has real promise.

fighter bashing and name calling are the same thing

But rather the intuitive thing to do for them. They have an NFL section, not a football one. An NHL section, not a hockey one, etc. And really lets face it, the UFC is pretty much to MMA as the NFL is to football. Especially from the perspective of the average Yahoo Sports viewer.

NFL isn't the only football,
millions of people watch college football, basketball, etc… Every friday night in the fall highschool fields are filled with fans….minor league baseball is very popular…I could go on and on. Not every MMA promotion has to be compared to the UFC. Quality MMA is out there and should be encouraged to grow. I love the UFC’s product, but they only hurt themselves when they bash other MMA.
The UFC doesn’t bash other MMA promotions unless they try to directly compete with them, they constantly talk about the need for secondary promotions too (as college sports are to the pro leagues, they need regional developmental leagues in MMA). Heck Dana always talked highly of Strikeforce until they went on CBS and signed Fedor and even then he tends to aim his ire at Showtime executives instead of Scott Coker.
You (and many others) have inspired a change in my signature.

Just out of curiosity
What’s wrong with them calling it UFC? They call American Football NFL, Baseball MLB, etc. If boxing actually had a dominant league, the link would surely be labeled as such. The dominant brand, title, whatever you want to call it for MMA, is UFC. Yahoo! is in accordance with that. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same change is made on ESPN.com in the near future.
by PetrozellisJab on Jul 23, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions
maybe because the ufc is NOT the nfl of mma
when fighters are getting paid more in other org’s, it’s pretty clear that when ufc says stuff like ’we’re the nfl of mma’, it’s just cheap words. there’s no substance behind them whatsoever. see in other minor league sports, athletes get a small fraction of what the big league players get. but when shane carwin only gets 40k and robbie lawler gets 80k and babalu gets 100k on a wed night, that speaks for itself. mma is mma. and i stopped going to yahoo sports to check up on mma since then.
I didn't say that the UFC is the NFL of MMA
Even though I do think that.
I said they are the dominant brand, which is indisputable.
I don’t want to get into a battle about fighter wages with you, but you’re wrong. Just because a handful of fighters make more in disclosed wages in an organization that is surely headed nowhere but down, doesn’t mean that the UFC has a subpar wage scale. Most agree that Carwin’s next contract will be far more substantial than his current one, considering he’ll no longer be fighting the likes of Neil Wane on the undercard.

i’d prefer the ‘dominant’ org to handle things like pros and not like mafia or clooge sports. backdoor deals and whatever else.
and about carwin. yeah just like they did to werdum right??
and about that other org clearly headed nowhere but down, that just your plain biased judgement. every mma fan should be in support of that other org. they’ve done nothing to disappoint. they give us what we want. and are doing a great job. their future is looking very bright.
Done nothing to disapoint?
See: Strikeforce Nashville, Strikeforce: Evolution, etc. Or even that Brett Rogers fights for the title after losing to Fedor. Yeah, nothing but rainbows and sunshine over there.
Werdum had lost to Arlovski, and gotten KOd by, at that time, an unknown JDS. He wanted more money, UFC offered less, he walked, end of discussion. Carwin will get more money, period.
As far as the UFC’s business tactics, who are we to judge? We wouldn’t even be having this discussion if it wasn’t for the UFC. Say what you will, but what they’ve done is evolve and legitimize the sport in a way that no other org has, or could have done. Yes, even Pride. I won’t insult your intelligence or MMA knowledge by reminding you how those turned out.

To the best of my knowledge, MMA Junkie has never said one critical word about Zuffa. That’s most likely why they’re in the top slot.

That's because they're primarily a news site, as opposed to a blog.
They have great sources and break a lot of stories, but rarely offer their own opinions.
Have you ever listened to their radio show? They’ve never questioned anything, ever, on the site .And that’s fine – that’s not their format .But it’s obvious that’s the reason why Zuffa likes them.I f Junkie asked tough questions and presented a real journalistic format where they analyzied what was going on in the sport instead of just presenting the latest news, Zuffa would banish them too.

Simon, truth is I make a lot of good points. Like here, no one mentioned inside mma, which has always been the best and most informative mma show for year. The ufc and fanboy bashing is to even out the haters who stink up junkies message boards. I do it to get a rise out of the people who deserve it. Sf gets bashed for everything and anything. Yet all they do is stage great fights. So let’s point out the glaring holes in ufcs game too.

Here’s the thing. I’ve heard of and seen about 95% of the sites listed on there and the ones everyone is mentioning. I honestly never knew there was theultimatefighter.com. I always figure ufc.com was it. As much as I like UFC, do you really need two web sites. And do you need to boost up your other websites with each other. That is the equivilant of me say “let me tell you how great my brother is” and my brother replying with the same answer. It would be more credible if they didn’t pat themselves on the back

Not to be a dick or anything, but haven't other posters been banned for acting like a dick and reverting to senseless name calling.
All I did was point out big of a shill this guy is when it comes to the Strikeforce/UFC debate. The guy has nothing positive to say about the UFC and creams his pants when it comes to SF comments. Don’t belive me, check it out. The worst thing about this guy is the fact that most of the posters over at mmafighting are newer fans who take this guy for his word. Not all of them as evidenced by the amount of negative marks he gets on alot of comments. I’d reasonably debate him there but everytime I try to create an account, it seems to act retarded and just doesn’t seem to act right.
Word of advice Pip, don’t come to BE expecting to act and say the same things you do over at mmaF. You won’t win, you’ll get trounced with the pathetic marking out over SF if you try that trolling shit here. Just saying. Next time you feel the need to reply to one of my comments, try to come up with something more original than “SImon Says”. We used that in kindergarden. At least have the balls to use your real name instead of hiding behind BOTH your computer screen AND a fake name.
You come off as someone who has an agenda, i.e. wanting (wishing) the UFC to fail, which I for one have never understood why someone calling themselves an MMA fan would want in a million years. Unless you are indeed a troll, then troll one my man. Just don’t expect any sympathy when you get busted out for acting like a dick on a much more respected MMA news forum.

Why didn’t they list “Commenter AboveThisFire on BloodyElbow.com”? This is clearly the question we should all be asking ourselves and the UFC.
Got the Summer hatin on me cus I'm hotter than the sun. Got the Spring hatin on me cus I ain't never sprung. Winter hatin on me cus I'm colder than ya'll; and I will never I will never I will never Fall.
The mat is my church, the ground is my heaven, Jiu-Jitsu is my religion. And once you hit the ground you're in my world. My world is like the ocean, I’m like a shark and most people don't even know how to swim - Draculino
I don’t think the role of TUF, the media climate in Washington or BE’s exclusion from the list is all that relevant. This isn’t about conforming to a certain opinion of things as much as it is about Zuffa’s unethical attempts to own the media that covers them. I don’t know if UFC/Spike employees like Ariel Helwani and Ben Fowlkes are being given cues as to what they should be talking and writing about, I just know they’re way too close to their subjects for comfort.
Since BE is on the outside looking in at this UFC media cabal, I’d like to see someone do some digging on this story. What are the specific economic relationships between Zuffa and AOL, Yahoo etc.? How do these relationships affect the editorial directions of these outlets and how they select staff? What benefits do connected media members like Helwani get out of these relationships that the non-connected don’t? What are the drawbacks? And perhaps most importantly, how are the media consuming MMA fans affected? And do they even care? An earnest discussion of these aspects of the story is important. If you just gloss over the systemic aspects, it only invites and encourages a smug outlook, e.g. “Oh, this is just Zuffa doing what they always do. LOL at anyone who finds this noteworthy or at all deserving of any discussion! KEKEKEKEKE”

Media manipulation in Sports is in no way unique to the UFC
The NFL is also guilty of this “Playmakers” being Exhibit A.

the list is rubbish…
but does the average UFC fan really care that much to dig into the ins and outs of the business. the good and not so good of the business?
i think the ppl who read ultimatefighter.com would be different to the crowd that like to delve deeper into the business. for the targetted fan of that site, the list probably caters well for them. they can go find out some more fighter news/fight announcements etc
the ppl who care more will find the good sites like BE. but for the more casual fan, they probably want to just enjoy the sport for wat it is, so the UFC shill sites cater to them perfectly. UFC is an entertainment sport, so by and large at lot of ppl will just want to be entertained and could care less about the negatives/inner workings of the game
BE is the only mma site i read. thats because im interested in delving deeper into sport… but that doesnt mean everyone else does
I honestly don’t have a problem with any site on the list outside of the Bleacher Report. They left a few off that I would have included (BE being one of them), but I would hardly call the list rubbish.
You have no problem
With some of the most established journalists being on the UFC payroll (between that site and UFC Magazine) and in turn reporting on them in non-UFC media outlets? And on top of that, being dubbed in their “formal” capacities as “best in the sport” by the UFC? That’s an awfully unethical feedback loop and hugely problematic.

No worse than what happens in politic or a million other places.
It should be expected to a degree. Anyone with a brain should know to take those type of lists (sponsored by any company) with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in this world who don’t have brains.
"It should be expected to a degree."
Well, that settles it. Back inside everyone. Nothing to see.
What’s really driving it, just FYI, are economic conditions. In order to generate the kind of content that’s easier to monetize, you need access to those subjects that are more likely to pull in eyeballs, visits and downloads. Those are generally more upper echelon names or entities. To get access to most of those players in a meaningful way (having Chuck Liddell in your headline is not tantamount to publishing an original interview with Chuck Liddell since you are for more likely to get outbound linked and placed high in Google’s search hierarchy) you need the UFC’s blessing. Sherdog is the exception to the rule in a profound way and they’ll stay on online if for no other reason than the SEO their Fight Finder provides. To work full time you need full time access and since much of that is controlled in the UFC’s palm, today’s media can be very hand in glove.

I am not saying I think it is right, I just saying that you had full well that you wouldn’t be on the list before you read it. Based on some of the material from here there was a 0% chance. Aside from changing the tone of some articles (which wouldn’t be all bad) there really isn’t much that can be done about it either.

'The Best MMA Site' would hands down BE-
If MMA Junkie or MMA Fighting were more similiar to Facebook, fans could have their own community website that’s just for mma fans with their own customized profile. Instead of having to keep refreshing pages throughout the day, fans could simply get text messages to their phones whenever a new story gets dropped or if someone replies to a comment you made. (would have made my life much easier for me that’s fo damb sho :) Although it’s been fun wanting to be the first to know when big news drops, i’d much prefer to just get a text on my phone that reads ‘The war is over. Strikeforce signs Fedor’ and not have to be scrambling computers for weeks. Everyone could have their own profile with their mma pics, favorite fighters, org’s and they could customize their profiles to be updated to whatever they choose- org’s, fighters, and friends. that’s the PipRock who makes good points every once in a while and actually a good sense. I should patent that shit right there.
And here’s the PipRock who just likes fucking with people. For those of you who want to be the biggest Fanboy in the history of all Fanboys, it could be really easy too! They could have a ‘EZ Fanboy’ feature when creating your profile that automatically puts your profile into ‘UFM- Ultimate Fanboy Mode’. You wouldn’t know anything about anything except ufc. That sounds like a great website. But if ufc didn’t approve, then they would just get sued for using the name ‘Ultimate’. And eventually we’d be stuck with just Yahoo Sports after ufc is done waging war on everyone non-ufc owned. -And hopefully I don’t get sued for this. I saved my old cable bills with the ufc ppv’s on em just in case. Maybe they won’t press charges when they see I was buying ppv’s when the sport was just starting. I should just patent the word ‘hello’ to help raise money for my legal fees so I don’t go in debt for writing the word ultmate in a non-ufc context. But no, seriously I always thought the word ultimate was kinda cheesy. The Ultimate Fighting Championship. That sounds so ‘Extreme Combat’. Just something about the name, I always though it was weak since day 1. It was fitting back then I guess, when I assumed the guy with the biggest arms would win by murder. :D I honestly like the Strikeforce name. IFL was good, but a little too generic. Too Major League Baseball’ish. King of the Cage is a good name.
