Tito Ortiz Faces Matt Hamill at UFC 121 in October

Photo

Although recent rumors suggested that Tito Ortiz would return to the Octagon for a rubber match against Forrest Griffin in October, Mike Chiapetta at MMA Fighting has learned this is not the case, and confirmed with UFC president, Dana White, that Ortiz will fight Matt Hamill at UFC 121 in Anaheim, California:

A source with knowledge of the situation told MMA Fighting that "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" will face Matt Hamill at UFC 121, and UFC President Dana White subsequently confirmed the matchup in a text message.

The match-up is intriguing as Ortiz coached Hamill on the third season of The Ultimate Fighter, where the two bonded closely.  Ortiz, who is progressing well in his recovery from spinal surgery, has often spoken fondly of Hamill, but the two will put that relationship aside in October.

The rumored card for 121 now includes:

Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez

Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampmann

Tito Ortiz vs. Matt Hamill

Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago

Brendan Schaub vs. Gabriel Gonzaga

Court McGee vs. Ryan Jensen

Chris Camozzi vs. Dongi Yang

Sam Stout vs. Paul Taylor

Patrick Cote vs. Tom Lawlor

Why no Stout/Taylor?

I know that fight would go to a decision but at least it would be entertaining.

I’d like to see Cote/Lawlor and Stout/Taylor on the prelims but McGee fighting mucks everything up.

its between cote lawlor and stout taylor for that last free prelim spot in my opinion

im assuming mcgee would get it for being a TUF winner

hopefully they throw mcgee on the untelevised portion and show stout taylor and cote lawlor but i dont really see that happening

I saw a recent interview with Jensen

where he made reference to the upcoming McGee fight being televised…so I assume that one’s a lock for the Spike prelims.

by Scott Haber on Jul 22, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Question

Do sponsor pay more money if you’re on the Spike prelims as opposed to the PPV? Prelims have more eyeballs.

by DodgerFan86 on Jul 22, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Contracts are done on an individual basis

but usually it’s televised/untelevised, not focusing on Spike vs. PPV. I’m interested to see if that changes now that the prelim specials are becoming more frequent, but I doubt there will be a difference unless there’s significant market research to support one being greater than the other.

Honestly, I think the PPV is a better place for sponsors. It ends up on DVDs, you get the full walkout/banner, and most importantly, the viewership is guaranteed to be willing to spend money on MMA. The last part is key.

Never

Not going to happen , Hamil has better wrestling then tito which will negate his whole game. If tito can’t get the upper hand in the wresting dept then he usually loses.

How do you know Hamil has better wrestling?

by Darren Watkins on Jul 23, 2010 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Hamill hasn’t even been using his wrestling lately in his fights, so I find it hard to see that Hamilll would have better wrestling than Tito. Hamill is very strong, but he has not come across as particularly fast, and I haven’t seen anything in his shot for takedowns that shows me that he has that great of takedowns.

This is a good fight. Tito, for his faults stayed competitive with Rashad Evans and Forrest Griffin, two elite level light heavyweights, and he almost submitted Lyoto Machida. He’s really, really shop worn, but he can still hang in there with the elite in the division.

Matt Hamill is no where near elite, but he should still beat Tito. He’s essentially a slightly younger version of Tito, with less health problems. Tito is a better submission grappler, but I kind of doubt that this fight goes to the ground. This is probably going to be a sloppy kick boxing match, with Hamill landing the better shots on the inside. It will be close and competitive though. I wouldn’t be suprised if it was a split decision- the donk judges just love Tito for some reason. But Tito will end up getting beat up pretty bad, one way or another.

Tito is shot, but he’s damn hard to finish. Only Chuck has been able to finish him in the last ten years. Hamill just doesn’t have the offensive output to hurt Ortiz and put him away. For God’s sake, Hamill couldn’t put away Keith Jardine.

Facts are facts, and Tito still took Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans to competitive decisons. I think he could do the same with Matt Hamill. It will probably be close enough that a certain portion of donks out there think that Tito won, just like in the last fight with Forrest. But Hamill will beat him up, one way or another.

I think the situations are slightly different...

It sucks having to fight for your friend, but when your job is being a fighter, you fight.

It’s a little different though when you’re asked to fight people you train with. Those are the ones who help you get ready for your fights and probably know your weaknesses. Who does the coach back when you have a situation like that? It’s never an ideal situation when you see it on TUF – extremely less so when you’re in the UFC for real. And as far as I know Hamill and Tito haven’t actually trained together since TUF.

by Hardcase on Jul 22, 2010 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

They trained for roughly a year together, off and on, after TUF. Tito actually hurt his knee training with Hamill in preperation for the first Forrest Griffin fight after TUF had finished filming.

The reason Hamill didn’t train with Tito more is that he couldn’t afford to travel out to the west coast. It was actually a minor news story at the time, that Hamill was trying to raise funds to travel to train with Tito before one of his fights (I believe it was the one against Petruzelli).

Thanks for the info...

If he hasn’t trained with him since the first Forrest fight…that’s what, 4 years ago? The Hamill/Ortiz match-up is still surprising to see, but understandable from my perspective as they don’t actively train together anymore.

by Hardcase on Jul 22, 2010 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

They trained after that. I’m pretty sure Tito used Hamill in training for Rashad, IIRC. But it’s been at least 3 years, maybe closer to 4 since they’ve trained together. There’s still a good relationship there though, much like with Hamill and Franklin.

As long as he is sufficiently healed from his surgery (and I don’t want to hear ANY bitching from him after the fight if this isn’t the case) this is a perfect stylistic matchup for him to make a competitive fight. Hamill is by no means a can and it doesn’t seem like he would destroy Tito either.

Madsen is 3-0 against garbage opponents. Madsen might be the worst fighter to ever go 3-0 in the UFC. Mike Russow is a much better wrestler than Jon Madsen and he couldn’t do shit to Duffee.

I got that

It’s just that Madsen doesn’t have the gameplanning brain farts that plagued Russow – he’s going to make it into a wrestling match, and you either need to be decent enough to fend him off or awesome enough at other things to negate it.

Trust me,Duffee has the take down defense to fend off Jon Madsen.Shaub was able to get out from under him almost instantly and knock his head off his shoulders. The only reason Madsen has done so well in the UFC is that he’s fought guys with either zero wrestling (Vemola) or zero offensive output.

Duffee isn’t great,by any means, but he’s good enough to knock out Jon Madsen. If he can’t beat Madsen, he doesn’t belong in the UFC at all.

Don't underestimate Tito

A case can be made that he won both rounds 1 and 2, and that second loss to Forrest was a split-decision with over a year off.

Tito’s problem is that when wrestlers fight each other they tend to cancel ear other out, and Hamill is by FAR the better striker.

Lucky me I live like 15 mins away from Anaheim. I feel like my head is gonna explode every time they keep adding new fights to this card. I really don’t know how any card the rest of this year will even get close to being this stacked and awesome.

I hope Tito is not getting a PPV cut of this, b/c he is not bringing that many extra buys to a card with Lesnar on it.

He’s getting a cut, and that’s exactly why he wants on this card. His comeback fight was supposed to be on the same card as Brock and when he dropped out that probably cost Tito seven figures so I’m guessing Dana is doing this as a favor to him.

by ufc4 on Jul 22, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

ugh, yea; he isn’t going to draw anyone extra that Brock wouldn’t. UFC is throwing money away if that’s the case. Dumb call on their part.

Well, so much for Jake Shields having to carry the card

It’s gonna be awhile before we can judge if the UFC can get their money’s worth out of Shields. I don’t think he’ll move the needle at all on this stacked card.

But this gives shields a chance to show everyone how good he is. This is a sacked card and should have a ton of eye balls on it and will give sheilds a platform if he performs well to become a draw.

Man, I hate this fight

I really do. I love Matt Hammil, one of my favorite fighters. He couldn’t put his all into fighting Rich Frankli, so I can’t imagine what he does here. I wonder if Matt’s reaction was like when he found out he wasn’t fighting is the semi-finals. “I fighting who? Tito. No way”

Cause there's only one, and that's me

“You’re asking me if I want to fight Tito? Okay, sure.” He has to OK every fight, just like all other fighters.

He couldn’t put his all into fighting Rich Franklin because Rich Franklin is way, way better than he is and is a horrendous style matchup for him. Tito Ortiz is essentially an older, broken down version of Matt Hamill with way less power. It’s a pretty good matchup for Matt – it’s a lot like the Resse Andy fight, although I think Tito is durable enough to stick it out until the final bell.

Great fucking card (if all of this is true)

Here’s to hoping they put Lawlor/Cote and Stout/Kelly on Spike prelims, would suck if we were to miss those fights. Should be really cool scraps both of ’em.

AWESOME card, i hope everybody stays healthy.Well everybody but TiT-o.somethings always wrong with that dude, besides being a fruit.Matt will retire his ass for good.Ktfo or gnp til stoppage.Forrest and Shad has good hand speed, but neither can punch as hard as Matt.Jardine is so unorthodox he is hard to fight, harder to finish. You have to ko him, tough dude, plus Matt was sick and gassed after 1.Matt is a better wrestler and hits harder, good luck tito.I’m interested in seeing Shaub- Gonzaga,to see where brendon actually stands. I think if he can keep it standing,he’ll have a decent shot.Hopefully he’s been working on t-down defense and jj. I hope Jake gets spanked. I want to see Sanchez back at a more suitable weight, that too will be a war,and Lawlor is always fun also.Top to bottom great fights. Bye-bye ppv records.Well done Dana Joe and Lorenzo…. Rogan wont have to do any acid to get hyped for this one. They ought to get lil evil Pulver to help commetate, he can sit there and go “oh dang-oh dang- ohh dang” haha I love it!!!!!!!
