Akihiro Gono (32-15-7) will drop to 155 pounds for the first time in his 16-year MMA career when he faces Mongolia's Jadamba Narantungalag (4-2) at SRC 14 on August 22nd.
Gono - who recently parted ways with his longtime home gym of Grabaka - told reporters at today's press conference that he hasn't weighed in at 70kg since he was 16 years old. He also said that his current weight is 77kg (169 lbs.) and that he plans to make the cut with the help of a professional nutritionist.
Narantungalag has competed for K-1 MAX (most notably being KO'd by "Kid" Yamamoto in his 2004 MMA debut) and trains with retired sumo yokozuna Asashoryu's new fight team.
Also announced for the card was a welterweight grand prix reserve bout between Motoki Miyazawa (6-2) and Takuya Sato (5-3-2).

doing it for the first time, yes. but in the grand scheme of things, that’s nothing. junior year of HS wrestling, i weighed 145 (pretty ripped) first practice. i dropped 7 pounds naturally down to 138 in a month, but would then water-cut the final 13 down to 125 in the 48-hours before a match nearly every week

Gozma competed at 185 for a large part of his career. He’s not a small 170. 155 is gonna be a chore for him.

well, maybe his problem isn’t being too small, but being 35 and war-worn

He competed at 185
but he was never a 185 fighter. Japan just didn’t have a 170 division so he was always stuck fighting much, much bigger guys. For a while even at 205. When he finally fought in an org that had 170 he did so much better. He still was a bit small compared to everyone else at 170, so 155 i probably the best place for him. He isn’t bigger than BJ Penn.

Good to see Japanese fighters thinking about dropping weight…

I love Gono, but unless he’s planning on making another run in the US; I don’t really see any sense in him dropping. I think he’s perfectly fine at 170 in Japan.

If he ducks into a high kick from a 155 guy he'll still get knocked out.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
my point exactly
his problem isn’t being too small, it’s that he’s 35 and his been through a lot of big-time wars

That KO had nothing to do with size. He ducked into the kick and got nailed. Plus it’s Dan Hornbuckle for crying out loud. Most welterweights in Japan aren’t Hornbuckle’s size.

I hope his 155 entrances are as epic as at 170 and 185. That is all.

Jadamba Narantungalag is a fantastic name. I’d love for that guy to make it to the UFC one day just to hear Goldie with it.
As for Gono cutting weight, it’s probably something he should have years ago. Might be too little, too late now.
Well this is unexpected. I was just thinking that Strikeforce should try to snag Gono to fight Diaz.
Holy crap that would be an amazing fight.
