A Bloody Elbow Reader Questionnaire...if you will
Recently in the comments section of a blog post, I saw Kid Nate as a reader some questions to sort of gauge when, where and why he became an MMA fan. This has always been something I've wanted to do but past attempts (or observation of attempts by others) has always yielded the "Been watching since Pancrase days" type response. I was shocked at the actual honesty in the poster's answers as well as some others who decided to answer his questions. What I would like to do is build on that and compile something. I believe that BE (minus the trolls) has an excellent group of knowledgeable fans and eager-to-learn novices. So I'd like for people to answer these questions, if not too much trouble. I did modify/add some to the list.

How long you’ve been into MMA? I started by watching the VHS tapes starting at UFC 1. Stopped during the “dark ages”, started following news about the sport again around the “regulation wars” with McCain. Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA? I got out of it about 6-7 years ago but I still turn it on every once in a while. I watched a bit of NXT on SyFy last night. I got tired of the same old stuff from the WWE. Once WCW was gone it wasn’t as much fun anymore but I still watched. Now it’s just the same old guys every show. I was always a fan of all combat sports.
Were you ever a boxing fan? Yes
How many boxing PPVs did you buy? I always bought the Tyson fights but not much more than that. Loved the Contender series.

How long you’ve been into MMA? not sure, a long time I guess.
How did you first hear of MMA? I saw a old UFC reruns shown here. Marco Ruas was my first favorite fighter, and Ken Shamrock also, cause he also went to the WWE. (but naturally, cause of my age then, I was just a casual fan)
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event? UFC PPVs are free here, but the first PPV I bought was when I went to San Francisco… UFC 79… Hughes GSP and Liddell Wanderlei, I’m sure as hell am not missing that event.
How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis. less than 1 a year? haha.
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long? a few years when I was a little kid. It was really big here in the Philippines, then most fans just grew up, and graduated to MMA/UFC.
If you purchased a pro wrestling PPV, what was your first event? If you’re now longer a fan, what was your last event? It was also free here back then… and I’m no longer a fan.
At your peak, how many pro wrestling PPVs did you buy? free.
Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA? no, I stopped a few months after the DX area? but I still casually watched until the John Cena days started.
Were you ever a boxing fan? Like most people here, I’m not a hardcore boxing fan, but I am a huge Pacquiao fan.
How many boxing PPVs did you buy? I never bought any (free here also).. but the last Pacquiao fight, my relatives in the states bought it.
What is your age? 31
How long you’ve been into MMA? 4 years? First time I actually sat down and paid attention to it was the season of The Ultimate Fighter with Jens and BJ coaching. I was recovering from surgery, and watched a marathon of the entire season, followed by the finale. Wasn’t instantly hooked, but I followed it casually for the next year or so on and off. Prior to that TUF season, I didn’t have Spike TV, or access to PPV. When I moved back up north, and I set up that kind of service, I became a full blown addict.
How did you first hear of MMA? Grew up in Buffalo and remember watching news reports about this “controversial” sport coming to town, and the governor (Pataki) trying to enforce ridiculous rules to make it “safe”. Guess that was UFC 7? Never really gave it much thought after that. Always thought the UFC and Toughman competitions were the same thing for some reason.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event? Either UFC79 (chuck/wanderlei) or UFC81 (first lesnar/mir fight). Not sure which.
How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis About 75% of them. Always seem to be traveling for the big ones though. Hoping to finally attend an event, with the upcoming show in Boston.
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long? In the early years (wrestlemania 1, etc) of course. Stopped paying attention to that around 10 or 11, but had some brief “get drunk with your friends and laugh at it” stints since.
If you purchased a pro wrestling PPV, what was your first event? If you’re now longer a fan, what was your last event? Never purchased one. Same deal as the UFC… never had financial or technical access. Always watched them at a neighbors hours who had an illegal hookup.
At your peak, how many pro wrestling PPVs did you buy? See above.
Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA? See above.
Were you ever a boxing fan? Sure, but mostly just Tyson fights, and other guys who were in their prime in that era.
How many boxing PPVs did you buy? None. Same sketchy neighbor would have us over to watch them.
What is your age? 35
How long you’ve been into MMA? Hard to say exactly, but watching Couture beat Sylvia hooked me for good. Spring 2007, then.
How did you first hear of MMA? I was into martial arts back when UFC got off the ground and word about ‘ultimate fighting’ got around to these parts of the world, eventually.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event? For this and every other PPV question, we don’t really have PPV where I live.
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long? On and off from the days of WrestleMania IV up until summer of 2007. I still keep some track of what happens in wrasslin’, but Benoit’s death really ruined it all for me (he was just about the last wrestler I still was a fan of).
Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA? See above – I feel there isn’t anyone left to root for. My ‘childhood heroes’ have either died, retired or are making an embarrasment of themselves and the new favorites I picked up along the way have been misused to hell and halfway back. In the end, the sport (MMA) beat the soap opera (wrasslin’) for me, at least.
Were you ever a boxing fan? Strangely enough, I’m picking up a taste for it just now.
You don't like wrestling in MMA? Go watch K-1.

I segued into MMA fully during the 1st TUF (waits for TUF N00b comments), but I’d been watching UFC’s on and off if friends ordered them. One of the guys at my job was really into PRIDE, so I’d get copies of PRIDE shows from him back in it’s hay day.

Yes, probably until I was about 11 or 12 years old – puberty really did a number on that whole thing. I will always love the Undertaker.

No, 12ish, and I didn’t – I was already a football and hockey fan as a kid, so I just went back to those and developed a tolerance for the other sports during the offseason. Fuck yeah for MMA going all year, by the way.

None. I’ll make an effort to see a certain fight, but most boxing cards are pure shit other than the main.

How long you’ve been into MMA?
2008. Watching TUF 7 at a friend’s house in undergrad, along with hours of UFC Unleashed on his TIVO. I remember getting into it around the same time someone showed me a bunch of Kimbo videos. Yep, TUF7 and Kimbo got me into MMA, and now I know who Genki Sudo and Rambaa Somdet are; it has been a long, strange journey.
How did you first hear of MMA?
Aside from the Friends episode where Jon Favreau fights in the UFC? Probably PPV commercials for Chuck and Tito and Randy and Matt Hughes.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event?
UFC 86.
How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis?
After 86, I bought 88. Starting at 91 my friends and I have rotated houses, but we buy every one.
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long?
In the mid-90’s (the Razor Ramone, Mr. Perfect, Royal Rumble for SNES-era) and again for about a year in 8th grade (1999ish).
If you purchased a pro wrestling PPV, what was your first event?
The one where Mick Foley fell through the Hell in a Cell.
If you’re no longer a fan, what was your last event?
That was my only PPV.
At your peak, how many pro wrestling PPVs did you buy?
Just the one.
Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching?
I remember some of my friends losing their shit when Chris Jericho came back and watching that episode of Raw, and being uncomfortable remembering how into this nonsense I had been.
How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA?
No segue, just Kimbo videos.
Were you ever a boxing fan?
MMA got me into boxing.
How many boxing PPVs did you buy?
I bought Pacman v. Clottey (which was a waste), but I’ve seen a few other Manny fights, some Mayweathers etc. I also watched Yuri Foreman fight Miguel Cotto hoping Foreman would win so Manny would have someone to fight when Pretty Boy Floyd inevitably backed down.

I think I still watched for awhile after I knew it was fake, but without the same passion. I lived and died with those tomahawk chops before that. :-)
I figured out that it was fake when I got in my 1st fight and tried to body slam another kid
I still liked it until they started rehashing storylines with newer but less interesting characters.

You need to work on your moves, bro. That pro wrestling shit is no joke if you can pull it off.
True story: 2 years ago at a Super Bowl party, I got insanely drunk. I was talking to a girl, we started flirting and what not. Next thing I know I got a 230 lb black dude sucker punching me.
Instinct must’ve just kicked in or something, cause I immediately eye gouged the fuck out of him. But that didn’t stop him. He followed me outside, I grabbed a lawn chair(a thick one) and smashed it over his head. This motherfucker still wouldn’t stop. I run to my car, but he’s still coming. As he came running at me, something in me said “fuck it”. I planted one hand on the door of the car, the other on the car itself and drop kicked him as hard as I could with both feet. I swear to God he flew about 10 feet, no exaggeration.
Crazy night.

I think its a toss up
between prison fighters and Special Forces. Either way, after 20 years of constant combat and weightlifting, you’re ready for anything. Except civilian life.
Guys like Bernard Hopkins learned to fight in prison. They say there was a dude named Dennis Newsome in prison with Tyson, supposedly, he was the only man Tyson wouldn’t fight. He knew a fighting style called 52 blocks or jailhouse rock. Its like ghetto kung fu.

by B.H. Farnsworth on Jul 22, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions
There’s some youtube videos, but I would take them with a grain of salt.
Dennis Newsome trained Mel Gibson for Lethal Weapon. You might be able to find some info about that.
Supposedly, the 52 blocks goes way back to early America. Like capoeira, it was kinda just pieced together by slaves; combining African martial arts and western boxing. They use dirty tricks like quick punches with thumbs or finger extended. Blocking punched with elbows. Pushing off walls to get more power, ala Allan Belcher. Its a really flashy but brutal fighting style. Floyd Patterson’s peek-a-boo stance is a carry over from jailhouse rock.
The Wu Tang Clan talks about it in a few songs. I guess most the styles originated in the prisons in New York, like Comstock. Zab Judah claims to know 52 blocks.

I knew wrestling was fake even before I started watching, still I was 9 at the time so I allowed myself to believe in it a lot more then I should’ve anyway. I remember making one of my friends freak out cause I kept telling him that it was all fake, really maybe knowing in advance is what kept me into it a lot longer than everybody else. Speaking of which Beyond the Mat had just came out at the time I started getting into the WWF so it wasn’t hard to come across how fake it was, Beyond the Mat being a great documentary btw.

I always realized it was fake
Even when I was a kid I would say to myself “why is so and so letting so and so throw him in to the ropes like that? That would be impossible to do if he didn’t let him do it.” But I loved the story lines. Once they got stalle I was done with it. The Nexus/NXT thing they are doing now is kind of cool though.
"I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I love, I will love with everything"
I really don't remember if we thought it was fake or not...
because me and my brother were having to much fun. Every Saturday morning we would watch and then take all the cushions and create a “ring” and start WRASSLIN. Sports eventually got in the way of that.
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." - Jack Burton
Well
When I saw Kendo Nagasaki spiting green stuff and Kevin Sullivan and his band of hooligans pretending to be demons I kind of realized it was fake. It still scared me a little when I was a kid but I knew it was fake.
"I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I love, I will love with everything"

Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA? – Still currently a fan of pro wrestling although not as much as I was before. The segue wasn’t much of a segue. As in, I didn’t start watching MMA because of pro wrestling. My brother had been trying for a long time to get me into it and finally it just clicked. UFC 82 was the show that turned me into a fan.

How long you’ve been into MMA? Followed it casually since the second Liddell-Couture fight, really started following it right around the time Pride collapsed.
How did you first hear of MMA? Old VHS tapes of the UFC at the video store. I’d rent them but didn’t exactly enjoy the action. I knew Shamrock so I would get anything with him in it.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event? Hmmm. I don’t think I ever purchased a PPV myself until UFC 91 I believe. I’d just go over a friends house if they happened to order it, if not I’d go without.
How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis Probably between 5-8. I manage to talk myself into a lot of cards at the last minute.
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long? Of course. Loved it from the ages of 5 to 15ish.
If you purchased a pro wrestling PPV, what was your first event? If you’re now longer a fan, what was your last event? I didn’t technically purchase it being that I was 5 (I think) but I remember watching Wrestlemania 5 in my living room. Last one I purchased was last year’s Royal Rumble but that’s just sort of a fun night me and a few buddies have. We pitch in and buy it every year and then we do a pool ($25 a guy) and randomly draw a few numbers out of a hat and if your number wins you win the pot.
At your peak, how many pro wrestling PPVs did you buy? Again, I didn’t buy them but I’d say in the neighborhood of 4 a year.
Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA? Not a fan anymore, Royal Rumble party aside. Stopped watching around 15 years old. It was right around this time that I started wrestling in high school which, in a roundabout way led to my interest in MMA.
Were you ever a boxing fan? Absolutely. I was a diehard boxing fan from Mosley-De La Hoya I up until Manny Pac v Hatton. I’m talking really hardcore fan. I went out to Vegas for Mayweather-De La Hoya (watched closed circuit at the Mandalay) and went to Atlantic City to see Coto-Margarito. Eventually the fact that fights I wanted to see weren’t being made or were being made with TONS of posturing before really soured me.
How many boxing PPVs did you buy? Not that many all things considered. I’d buy a few Manny Pac cards a year and used to have big parties for Floyd fights. Now? I can’t tell you the last time I paid to watch a boxing match.

Holy hell you just sent me right back to the Mom and Pop place I rented mine from. Wow, that’s great.
That's where I ended up buying all of mine
Once I got hooked I started going to a mom and pop place and started renting them. Then Blockbuster bought them out and I just bought everyone they had. After years and years I let a young frined of mine borrow them and I still haven’t got them back. But that’s okay, I have them all on DVD now.

Cut out a few of the questions that don't apply to me
What is your age?
22
How long you’ve been into MMA?
Casually, since TUF 1. That period when TUF was just starting and Stallone was doing The Contender was my first real experience with combat sports, and i took pretty well to it, and it didn;t take me too long to fall completely in love with MMA. I’ve been what you’d call a “hardcore” since around the end of 06/ start of 07.
How did you first hear of MMA?
My older brother was a big fan. I first heard about the UFC way back when he rented one of those old crappy games for the PS1. I’m pretty sure Tito Ortiz was on the cover.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event?
UFC 57: Liddell vs. Couture 3
How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis
Pretty much every PPV the UFC puts on.
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long?
Never been a fan. I do not understand the appeal.
Were you ever a boxing fan?
Like i said, i dug The Contender, but i’ve never felt the same way about boxing as i do about MMA. Never bought a boxing PPV. So I wouldn’t exactly call myself much of a boxing fan. I mean, i watch a lot of fights, and i appreciate and enjoy them, but it’s just feels like something is missing. Same with BJJ or K1 or any of the individual aspects of MMA. I can enjoy watching them in their distinct areas of competition, but whenever i do, i can’t help but wish it was a MMA match instead.

"How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis"
Correction on the answer for this question. I don’t actually buy every UFC PPV, but i do watch every one. I’ll either buy it at home and chill out and watch it alone, honestly this is probably my preferred way to watch, but i’ll also get together with a bunch of people and have a chip in viewing party or head out to a bar with some buddies to catch it.

THAT is what a love about wrestling and that was why i watched. but i just could no longer handle sitting through RAW/SMACKDOWN, PPVS…any longer because they were not giving me what i enjoyed seeing. or maybe i was growing out of what actually had never changed? idk. all i know is i started watching mma at the tail end of tuf 1 and that was that. i was hooked and mma became the ONLY sport i follow. its why i come to this site 100 times a day on breaks, lunches, after i wake up and before i go to bed…..

What is your age?

How long you’ve been into MMA?
My first event was UFC 79, so about 2,5 years now. This was after a friend recommended the sport to me, and 79 was the newest event at the time.
How did you first hear of MMA?
I’m not sure exactly, but what got me into it was a friend recommending me to check the UFC out, because he knew I was a big fan of K-1 and thought I’d might like MMA as well. He was oh so right! Started downloading UFC and Pride events like crazy after that.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event?
Never. I live in Sweden, the numbered UFC’s + TUF are shown on a sports channel on cable tv, everything else I download on torrent sites the day after the event (only choice if I want to be able to catch Strikeforce, DREAM, Bellator, etc. They’re not shown on tv here).
How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis
None
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long?
For a few years when I was a kid, probably from 5 years old to maybe 10 at max. It was extremely cool to us kids back then, but once you got a bit older it all seemed very silly and everyone stopped watching it basically.
If you purchased a pro wrestling PPV, what was your first event? If you’re now longer a fan, what was your last event?
Never bought one, don’t know.
At your peak, how many pro wrestling PPVs did you buy?
None
Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA?
Nope. I sometimes for nostalgia catch that “best of” show with Gene Oakland (don’t remember the name), showing oldschool WWF classics. Nowadays pro-wrestling is not at all appealing to me and I avoid it like the plague. I transitioned from K-1 to MMA (still love K-1 though), pro-wrestling or boxing was never a factor.
Were you ever a boxing fan?
Never. I started watching K-1 kickboxing back in the early 2000’s, but regular boxing never appealed to me as I find it too limiting. It doesn’t make sense to me to have stand-up combat with only being able to strike with your hands. Why watch boxing when you can have kickboxing? I respect boxing and boxing fans, but personally I never enjoyed it much. K-1 / kickboxing / Muay Thai + MMA are the only sports I follow. Loving it!

I picked it because I thought Frye looked like Tom Sellock. From their I watched those best of Prides with Frank Trigg religiously, and a couple UFC Unleasheds as well.
First Purchased Event: Personally, UFC 102. I used to go over to a friend’s house in high school who bought every event. First one I went to was UFC 73. Anderson-Marquardt.
How many MMA PPVs per year: Usually go to bars for each, but I’d say about two a year.
Were you ever a fan of pro wrestling: Kind of. My older brother was, I watched with him when I was young.
At your peak, how many pro wrestling PPV’s did you buy: 0
Are you currently a fan: No
Were you ever a boxing fan: Boxing kind of goes over my head
How many boxing PPVs did you buy? 0

How long you’ve been into MMA?
Since 2006. I got into it with a few friends who I wrestled with throughout high school.
How did you first hear of MMA?
Promos for UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event?
No purchase, but I go to bars and restaurants a lot, or find it online.
How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis.
None, see above.
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long?
No, I hated it for being fake. To me, it tarnishes amateur wrestling.
If you purchased a pro wrestling PPV, what was your first event? If you’re no longer a fan, what was your last event?
Never
At your peak, how many pro wrestling PPVs did you buy?

I'm just a 16 year old kid who loves MMA.
Normally my answers to all of those questions would be “noneya business hoe” but since I’m jacked up on extra strength 5 hour energy I’ll go ahead and humor you.
What is your age?
21 (legal fellas ;)
How long you’ve been into MMA?
Been about 3 or 4 years since I’ve started paying attention to MMA, and 2 years since I’ve been following it indepth.
How did you first hear of MMA?
Don’t really know to be honest, just kind of heard about it here and there.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event?
UFC 92, great first PPV.
How many MMA PPVs do you purchase on a yearly basis?
On a personal level I’m like flat broke, I got moths living in my pockets, but when I have money plus my birfday and Christmas I’d say at most it’s been about 4.
Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long?
Shit yeah son, my Monday nights wouldn’t be complete without a Stone Cold beer bath. I started getting into wrestling around the end of 98 cause my Dad’s friend had two crazy ass sons that got me into it. Before I started watching we they used to do the moves on their trampoline and since I didn’t know jack squat I’d pretty much get molested for an hour. I still keep up with it, but nothing good had jumped off since these NXT guys came into the picture for closing in on a decade.
If you purchased a pro wrestling PPV, what was your first event? If you’re now longer a fan, what was your last event?
My first and last event was Royal Rumble 08, I felt like throwing away some money that night. Before that I used to get all the PPVs from 98 to 2001 for free thanks to some less then legal means.
At your peak, how many pro wrestling PPVs did you buy?
My memories a little black on the matter, it’s hard to recall in my memory box.
Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA?
I still watch for the most part just to keep tabs, it’s like 95% garbage though. Wrestling had been just turrible for years so when I started catching MMA fights I was already well disinterested in the antics of the WWE.
Were you ever a boxing fan?
I caught the Tyson fever growing up same as everybody else, but I never went out of my way to catch any fights. I keep up with it a lot more now but I’m still not the biggest follower.
How many boxing PPVs did you buy?
Notta, I ain’t putting down 35 dollars for one fight I’m only passably interested in seeing anyway.

Same here. From seeing the way people on BE write and have conversations I pictured everyone as college professors with glasses and smokers jackets with padded elbows smoking tobacco out of wooden pipes.
I get more rec's then a Toyota!
I found Silva’s last fight to be rather shallow and pedantic.

A short retort
Only an unimaginative mind could come up with such a synopsis. He played the role of an antagonist quit well and ultimately entertained the audience with his rhythmic form of interruptive dance. The ending is purely a display of his country’s turmoil with the social class system and the characters need to find his place in a democratic society.
I get more rec's then a Toyota!
I concur.
The bout was a reflection of the unrest and injustice felt by the Brazilian underclass. The enraged antics of Silva were a manifestation of classism and the unheard cries of the downtrodden poor. A microcosm, if you will.

Were you ever a fan of professional wrestling? If so, for how long? At an early age I was a big fan when Hogan, Andre and Ultimate Warrior were the big guys and they had the cartoon on Saturday mornings (forget the name) but it had Sheik, Junkyard Dog, Hogan, etc..
If you purchased a pro wrestling PPV, what was your first event? If you’re no longer a fan, what was your last event? The last event I purchased was a Summer Slam with the Rock beating Stone Cold by Rock bottom for the belt.. lol I don’t remember the name or year..

Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA? No longer a fan.. I’ve always been a fan of physical competition.. It didn’t take much to attract me to MMA and leave boxing and pro wrestling. UFC was more entertaining for me personally, so once it grew into filling the void, I stopped watching boxinf and pro wrestling.

Age 37
Saw UFC 1-4 on VHS tape, probably in the 94-95 timeframe.
Buddy from college had us over to watch above VHS tapes, never heard of it before that
Never purchased any MMA event, started regularly going to bars (and paying my cover charge) 3 years ago.
Never a fan of pro wrasslin’ I knew of Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, but only very vaguely.
Never purchased any pro wrestling anything
Not really a boxing fan. I always found it rather boring, also Dad wouldn’t let me watch when I was at home, by the time I got to highschool-college, girls were WAY more entertaining than watching TV.
Never bought any Boxing PPVs
should add
Long lay off between first viewing and my modern appreciation. Fortunately SPIKE got me all caught up to speed on everything I missed (that the UFC wants me to see), and thank god for FSN for showing all the Pride shows with Glazer and Trigg so I got to see the epicness of PRIDE.

Used to watch a lot of them over at a friends house, so once again, didn’t technically purchase the PPV but watched them all the same. The last pro wrestling PPV I watched was probably Wrestlemania 23.

Four years now, since 2006.
How did you first hear of MMA?
I actually found some Anderson Silva fights on youtube when youtube was first starting up. That got me into watching Pride whenever fights came up on youtube. After Pride died though, I stopped watching promotions, just kept on watching Anderson Silva fights. So when AS came to the UFC, I started watching the UFC casually. It wasn’t until UFC 98 that I became a very big MMA fan. For Some reason the Lyoto vs. Evans fight sparked a big interest in me, and now I try to watch as many fights as I can, in any promotion. I even just began training a bit.
If you have purchased an MMA PPV, what was the first event?
My first PPV purchase was UFC 103, though I don’t miss many events in the first place.

" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
I am an old bastard (so my kids tell me) at 40.
I started watching MMA back in the early 90s thanks to a shitty video store.
I have purchased ever UFC/Affliction PPV for several years now.
My wrastlin back round came from being a child and watching “Wrestin at the Chase” in the 70s. Bruiser Brody, Ricky Flare, Paul Orandorf, Von Eriks etc. I stopped once I discovered girls in 8th grade.
Never purchased a single PPV for wrastlin, not a fan of it today.
Boxing was my true love even after I started watching MMA. I lost my desire to seek out and watch boxing around the time Chris Byrd and his career were taking off. I didnt see the mega stars in boxing any longer. The 80s (my prime watching time) had the likes of Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Pryor, Holmes, Arguello, Mancini, Camacho, Cesar Chavez, Whitaker and many more. Those were the golden ages imo. Anyone who loves combat sports should look up and watch these guys fight.
Whichever sport can obtain another group of fighters (like boxing had in the 80s), they will come out on top of the fight game. Right now I have to lean towards MMA but hings can change fast. 1 or 2 great boxers with charisma, charm and marketability could turn the tide quickly.

Also are you still currently a fan? if not, when did you stop watching? How did you segue from pro wrestling to MMA? Not watching any more. Didn’t segue that much really, so much as MMA blew up around the time my interest in pro wrestling was fading anyway. Throughout 04 to 05 it was just all the same old twists and turns you become accustomed to in pro wrestling so I just gave it a rest.
