Fabricio Werdum may be looking for some Cheddar
Well it seems there is a bit of a catch to Werdum giving Fedor an immediate rematch. Can't blame Werdum for looking for a bit of "incentive" to do this fight in October. It's also interesting that he hasn't ruled out taking another fight between the rematch with Fedor too(Overeem?).
With Fedor Emelianenko's aura of invincibility shattered, his promoter, M-1 Global, is suddenly tasked with rehabilitating Fedor's image as "the baddest man on the planet." Their best course of action starts with getting Fedor back in the cage with Fabricio Werdum as soon as possible. In their eyes, proving Fedor's loss to Werdum was a "fluke" can't come soon enough. They've already targeted October for the fight.
Fortunately for M-1, Fabricio Werdum is willing to give Fedor Emelianenko the rematch they seek, however there's a catch. According to Fighters Only, Werdum is only willing to do it on their timetable if the right incentives are provided.
Fighters Only quotes:
Fabricio Werdum's rematch with Fedor Emelianenko will take place - but not for at least eight months, according to a source very close to the Strikeforce heavyweight. The source told Fighters Only that Werdum does not want to rematch Fedor in what remains of 2010.
.....
The source told us that Werdum has not ruled out taking another fight before rematching Fedor, and also said that he may be open to fighting him again in less than eight months if the right incentives were provided.

Looks like the upper hand, is on the other foot!

Maybe Werdum should demand M-1 to “co-promote” the show with the Werdum Combat Team?

I love it
Genius. Delays fighting Fedor, knowing Fedor’s camp needs this rematch and books another fight to cash in on being the “Man Who Beat Fedor”. And if Fedor wants it earlier they have to pay extra. Hell, the way things are Strikeforce could probably ask m-1 to chip in for Werdum’s purse if they want to make it happen. And if he beats his next opponent and Fedor, he’ll have only one fight left and Strikforce will have to sign him to a pretty lucrative contract extension to make a superfight with Overeem.
Good for Werdum. Now don’t blow it like Shields.
Werdum just beat the supposed #1 guy… if he were in the UFC he’d make over a mil just on his first title defense regardless of what his contract says. Machida made millions above his agreed upon terms after beating rashad.
Werdum wont fight for 100k which is what strikeforce will want to pay him. He keeps saying 8 months… I wonder if there’s an expiration date on his contract regardless if he fights or not.
Probably smart on Werdum's part
He has quite a bit of leverage right now, and a Fedor rematch is still a high profile fight. Hopefully whatever Fedor did wrong (not train enough grappling, get too wild, etc) gets corrected; I think his loss was a result of overconfidence/ not paying enough respect to Fabricio’s ground game.

Overeem has a new opponent ducking him
I don’t think Werdum is making a push to challenge Overeem for his title because Overeem has improved tremendously and the last solid striker Werdum faced in JDS KHTFO. I believe that he is opting to want to rematch Fedor because he’s afraid Overeem will beat him up badly and KO him. If I’m Overeem, I’d be calling Werdum out and telling him to man up and face me.
We just saw Fedor and Werdum and I’m far more interested to see the Overeem vs Werdum rematch than a Fabricio vs Fedor rematch, this quickly. Only in SF will you see contenders considering fighting the champ a step backwards. Fabricio, congrats on beating Fedor but step up and take a shot at winning the SF 265lbs title. If Overeem is really such a step down, then walk through him and take his title.
That’s kind of missing the point though. The Strikeforce title is a bauble, it has no value (as Overeem himself has demonstrated). On the other hand, being ‘the guy who beat Fedor’ is a title nobody else will have – even if someone else beats Fedor the win won’t be as significant. This is a once-in-a-career opportunity for Werdum, he’s not going to waste the opportunity to milk it for all it’s worth for the sake of Strikeforce’s belt.
????
How is Werdum ducking Overeem here? They are saying that he will only have a rematch with Fedor in 2010 if the proper incentives are given(they pay him enough money to do it) and that Werdum is open to having another fight before the Fedor rematch(which would be the fight with Overeem). Heck Werdum holds a win over Overeem, why would he duck a guy he already beat?
