Snapshot of the Day - WEC: 'Aldo vs Faber' Gets Re-Branded Under the UFC Banner

Ufcfeath_medium

The WEC: "Aldo vs Faber" undercard bout between Leonard Garcia and the "Korean Zombie", gets repacked on a UK broadcast under the UFC name, and in the "UFC Featherweight Division". Is this a sign of things to come?

Cool. Does the UFC have a TV deal there too?

they have one here in the Philippines, so it makes watching UFC really easy (and free)… it’s the smaller shows that becomes a hassle cause i have to find other means to watch them.

Man!!

I wish the UFC had a deal here. There’s actually a channel here that’s called Fighter (in Russian). They show a lot of old and some recent M-1 promotion smaller shows in Russia and kickboxing/karate/judo/bjj tournaments.

All the tournaments are of mostly russians. I’ll be on the lookout for the “next” Fedor. ha ha.

WEC & UFC

Are both owned by Zuffa so when Dana makes the call, it will happen. Just like they did the HW’s LHW’s and MW’s.

by MrTechnique420 on Jul 2, 2010 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

It the same situation

as removing the WEC branding from the spike and PPV proadcast, Versus has some pull in the WEC so if Zuffa wants to broadcast those fights then they would have to use the ufc banner, unless versus has a partnership with them already, or so i think anyways

This is a sign

of contracts with networks and the hairsplitting nature of legal language. Pretty exciting stuff, huh?

by judonerd on Jul 2, 2010 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

Very true...

But, What I want to know is what Zuffa will do, once the WEC’s contract with Versus is over… Or, if they will/want to find a way to move their top talent to the UFC before it even runs out.

by Anton Tabuena on Jul 2, 2010 1:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It will all depend on the timing. If Versus has a chance of signing a deal with Bellator or Strikeforce when the WEC contract is up, then Zuffa will be sure to keep the WEC intact and sign a new deal, just to keep the opposition from getting on a channel where people can actually watch them at regularly scheduled times. I’ve always been under the impression that keeping the WEC around was mainly a means of keeping rival promotions off of Versus. Might be time to end the exclusive agreement with Spike, if they could regularly hold UFC events on Versus then the WEC would be folded in immediately.

by IWillPartyHard on Jul 2, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Or

They could/will have to renegotiate their Spike contract (as you suggested) to allow for, say, one more UFC event per quarter on Versus, along with a stipulation that any main event with fighters larger than LW will only take place on Spike. This may seem absurd, but the WEC has become known as the home for the top smaller fighters in the world (a reputation they don’t seem to mind) whereas Spike is the home for the UFC mainstays. This sort of contract stipulation may be ridiculous, but I believe that folding the WEC, or using it as a feeder league ala Strikeforce Challengers is the best bet for all involved.

"The mat is my church, the ground is my heaven, Jiu-Jitsu is my religion. And once you hit the ground you're in my world..."

by Rudinho479 on Jul 2, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds good and here is what I would do

I would definitely use the WEC as my develpomental system, bringing the 145, 135 and the 125 lbs class when they get it up and going into the UFC would definitely be the right move. Jose Aldo UFC Featherweight Champion has a nice ring to it. I can’t see why the WEC can’t hold events on Spike if the UFC can have events on VS, they are owned by the same people afterall. Adding those 3 lighter weight classes would be good and it would give the UFC 8 champions and there would be more title defense at more cards. Cruz vs Benevidez for the UFC Bantamweight Title would be a great co-main event at UFC 116, considering how many people are tuning in for it…what better way to give that lighter weight class the exposure it deserves.

Time for the UFC to add those 3 lighter weight classes, those smaller fighters deserve their shot in the UFC Octagon. The WEC has shown their is a market for the lighter weight classes so now it’s time for the UFC to bring them in.

by StealthBomber on Jul 3, 2010 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions

its all about the tv contracts

they can only show so many ufc shows off of spike, if they ever fix that expect the WEC to merge and every WEC show on VS to be a ufc show

until then though they still need to keep the wec running so they keep the light weight stars there, which isnt exactly the best idea

We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!

by milk72 on Jul 2, 2010 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

It may not be the best idea

but for now, it works for pretty much everyone except the fighters themselves. WEC ratings are fairly strong and have helped Versus gain recognition amongst the 18-35 year old male demographic. Before the WEC, people such as myself had no use for the channel, but I now find it to be one of my preferred stations. Faber, Aldo, Cruz, Benavidez, etc. tend to draw the hardcores and have slowly started to become more mainstream due to their being on the WEC regularly (especially since they feature these guys over and over on their wreckage shows).

The only people really hurting with the current WEC structure are the fighters, as their paydays, bonuses, etc. are much lower than their UFC counterparts. One may argue that this is simply supply and demand, but much of the money that is made available to fighters in the UFC is due to TV contracts and what not. You really think more people tune in to see Brandon Vera specifically, who makes close to 6 figures a fight, than Urijah, who was making 20/20 while owning the title? As soon as the lighter divisions get the UFC tag, they’re automatically worth much more to both Zuffa and to sponsors, regardless of whether or not they pull in more viewers. For the fighter’s sake, I hope they merge quickly.

by Rudinho479 on Jul 2, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

see what i would do is simply call the WEC UFC bushido

so legally its not a UFC event so it doesnt break the spike contract and it throws the UFC brand on the WEC so it is labeled the UFC

more than likely spike thought of this and stopped them but its a good idea regardless

We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!

by milk72 on Jul 2, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice idea, but I don’t think the word Bushido would connect with American fans. UFC Jr. sounds way better.

yea but it doesnt need to connect

people will think for a second wtf does that mean then nvm its ufc

ufc jr would be horrible yet totally hilarious

We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!

by milk72 on Jul 2, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

They could call it “UFC Midgets” and people would still tune in because of the first 3 letters. I’m sure this is something that has come up in negotiations, but I’m sure just having UFC in the title renders it impossible due to Spike’s contract with the UFC.

I know what it looks like, but I think a lot of people are forgetting that the WEC is not broadcast on tv in the UK anywhere. At all. So basically to any casual MMA fan, if it had said WEC there’s a good chance they wouldn’t have had any idea what it was. I think that is the simplest explanation, a simple way of presenting an awesome fight to casual fans who would otherwise not have seen it.

If this were in the US it would be very significant, but since it happened on a UK broadcast I think everyone is overstating its importance

"Ten more seconds is all I ever ask. That's the good thing I learned about being KO'd twice. You don't see it coming -it's like death- you don't plan for it so don't wait for it.
