Jake Shields Officially Signed to UFC, Fighting Martin Kampmann

It was widely speculated before, but now it's official according to Jake Shields on Twitter:
UFC contract officially signed. Fighting Kampmann in CA in a few months. Thanks to @danawhite and everyone for their support #fb
One presumes the fight is at 170lbs, but no word has been given. If we take "a few months" as a literal timetable, Shields is likely for UFC 120 or UFC 121. I suspect the latter as It's in Shields' home state of California.
Shields is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and intriguing free agent additions ever to the UFC. He's currently ranked #3 at middleweight in the USA TODAY/SB Nation Consensus MMA Rankings, but should have no problem launching himself into the top 10 or perhaps even top 5 with a win over Martin Kampmann.
For my money, I actually think Kampmann can give Shields fits on the right night. The Dane's wrestling is not on par with Shields' ability, but it's defensively stronger than it once was. His top and bottom BJJ game are technically sound and heavy on transitional movement. He's also not careless in scrambles. Provided he can hold his own on the ground, he's got the clear edge in kickboxing. I also think Kampmann's precision and patience are noteworthy and particularly helpful as Shields is quite adept at making over committed, out of position attackers (strikers or grapplers) pay dearly for their mistakes.
Either way, it's something both Shields and the UFC welterweight division will clearly benefit from, to say nothing of the fans. Welcome to the deep end of the pool, Jake.

Kampman will take this....
Kampman takes this and Shields drops in the standings.
Shields does gas a little if taken into the third and Kampman can go 5 rounds. I See Kampman out working Shields and out pointing him. We will see Shields putting Kampman in danger at a couple different points in the fight probably…. but Kampman has been there and is quite good on the ground too and knows defense.

How does Kampmann stay off his back? His wrestling is the weakest part of his game.

Agreed
I’m shocked by all the people picking Kampmann.

Shields could wipeout over both the WW and MW divisions in the UFC
and people would still pick against him all the time. I figured after he beat Hendo, he would start getting more respect. The man is like the Rodney Dangerfield of MMA.

so true… Shields is the type of guy with the type of skillset who’s not supposed to be beating the guys he’s beating…. Strikeforce even bet their business on it.
Still if you match him up stylistically he’s not supposed to win or even be successful in the UFC… Perception says he wont be but history says he will be. Let’s see what happens.
Im not qwriting Shields off.....
I think this fight is so close that you could pick either one. I definitely wouldn’t say Shields is going to breeze through Kampann….nor would I say Kampmann is going to breeze through Shields.
I think Kampmann is going to come back extremely strong. He lost, then came back extremely crisp against Thiago, and now will win an extremely close match against Shields.
This fight is closer than a lot of people think.

It will be a close call....and Im not saying Shields is bad or anything....
but I believe Kampman will pull out the victory here and welcome Shields into the UFC.

Certainly set Condit back when they faced each other, though he appears to be on a better path after the MacDonald victory.
Yeah....
And he picked Thiago apart! He was really crisp in that fight.

I was impressed by Kampmann in that fight because I have seen him throw gameplans out the window before. While Shields will most likely be able to take this fight to the floor, there is always that deficiency in Shields’ standup that could get Kampmann the win.
Absolutely
But Shields has proven to have a pretty solid chin; I’m not sure if Hendo could have tagged it any better with that initial onslaught.
This
For a guy who is deficient in standup, Shields has done really well against some very heavy hitters. He’s not pretty up there, but he’s tough, and can get the fight where he wants it.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
He’s not pretty up there, but he’s tough, and can get the fight where he wants it.
That is key. Kamp has far and away better striking, and he proved that he is very tough to deal with on the ground, but Shields is an elite MMA ground fighter. Can Kamp do more on the ground than Mayhem?

I like Kampman,
but I don’t see him keeping the fight standing for 15 minutes, nor do I see him withstanding the pressure Jake is going to put on him once it gets to the ground. Jake has good chin, and has stood in with much bigger punchers than Kampman (Hendo, Daley) before imposing his game on them. Jake by sub, Rd. 2.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
I don’t think so.
Daley lit up Kampmann on his feet but even Daley got submitted quickly by Jake Shields as soon as it hit the ground.
did you watch the fight? daley got subbed in the 2nd round.

Love this fight.
Very dangerous for Shields but also a fight that he can win. It would push him right into a title shot as well. We finally get to see what kind of draw he can be now that he has some actual promotional muscle behind him.

It could also put Kampmann close to a title shot

Totally agree
Kampmann is nobody’s stepping stone. If Shields doesn’t have an exciting fight, it’s on him. I’ll take even odds on FOTN.

A good first fight for Shields in the UFC...
It’s a fight he can win, but still competitive. All things being ideal though, I would have preferred Jake vs. the winner of Alves/Fitch.
I say
Let winner vs winner, with that winner to face GSP after Kos fight.

exactly
why they put Shields on this card. Pure genius putting him on this card to give him exposure to the masses who are set to buy Cain/Brock. this is going to be sick

yes
Piggybacking Lesnar is a great way to bring shields into the picture. Plus if he wins and they give him the next title shot it gives them plenty of time to build hype for that fight.

It’s a shame that Shields didn’t jump right from EXC to the UFC, but he sure didn’t hurt himself in the interim. Looking forward to see what he does (and if he in fact stays at 170).

Stylistically the 2 most interesting fights for GSP is Koschek and Shields. Those are the 2 fights I want to see… If Kampmann can beat shields not so much the latter.
There’s no one else at 170 that interests me for GSP.
But if Martin Can beat a wrestler like Shields
Wont that make GSP vs Kampmann interesting.?
by Kim Hvid Johnsen on Jul 19, 2010 4:15 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
No
GSP is on another level compared to Jake Shields. Kampmann’s lack of striking and takedown defense will get him lit up on the feet and/or planted on the mat at will against GSP. Let’s not forget that GSP was primarily an Ultimate Kickboxer (and a good one at that) before he sold his soul to Mephisto for his outlandish wrestling base.

But a shields GSP fight
Would be even more uncompelling, by that logic. Maybe kampmanns wellroundedness makes him easy to underestimate (not being world class in any one field), but it also makes him a viable threat to anyone (he is world class mma as a whole).
by Kim Hvid Johnsen on Jul 19, 2010 4:35 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
If Kampmaann beats shields then a jake/gsp fight isnt compelling but neither is a kampmann/GSP.
If he wins Kampmann will probably fight the winner of alves/fitch if it’s alves. If Fitch wins and Shileds loses, Jon will likely get the next shot.
Im not interested in the fitch fight. Im only interested in the Kos fight and the Shields fight (if he can beat the dutchmen).
Hell. I'm Danish so I'll back kampmann
Even though he hasn’t fought a decent wrestler before. Fun fight though.
by Kim Hvid Johnsen on Jul 19, 2010 4:47 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Kampmann is world class but he's got gaping holes in his game.
Blocking strikes with your face is no bueno at the highest levels of competition (See Kampmann vs. Daley). Shields vs. GSP could be interesting, but I’m pretty sure they’ll have a gameplan to counter and completely negate the Hyperactive Dog Leghump strategy that Shields is so famous for.
Walking the line between intelligence and ignorance since 1985
@deowade
It's his standing defence that's lacking alright.
But Martin did seem to have bettered himself against thiago. But the Daley and mcfedries fights did not make his defence look good.
by Kim Hvid Johnsen on Jul 19, 2010 4:51 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Unless he gets Liddell's sprawl from a few years ago
He’s getting taken down by both. GSP’s takedown timing is sick and if Shields will latch onto Kampmann’s leg and sooner or later he’ll end up on the ground.
Walking the line between intelligence and ignorance since 1985
@deowade
I agree. The TDD will be the deciding factor.
Unless he can sweep off his back, which I doubt. He needs to land on top to have succes on the ground. The more I think about it the more bleak it looks for Kampmann. I hope he maybe has picked up something from xtreme couture, we just haven’t seen yet.
by Kim Hvid Johnsen on Jul 19, 2010 5:09 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
interesting in that it could be a fun fight
But not interesting in that it most likely wouldn’t be a particularly competitive fight. GSP is a better wrestler the Jake, so even if Kampmann can handle Jake’s wrestling, that doesn’t necessarily mean much for a possible about against GSP. GSP is also a better striker then Kampmann as well. Kampmann really has nothing for him.
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein"

yeah interesting in that we wont watch a blanket next to a camp fire for 25 minutes. GSP wont grapple with Shields so it we’ll likley see a fight.
We’re likely to see the old GSP in the KOS fight and a shields fight if he can get past the dutchmen.
Fitch represents a similar style but we saw that movie already. Everyone else GSP is simply gonna dry fuck for 25 minutes.
So instead of watching Shields for $8 a fight you can now watch him for $60 a fight. I wonder if he is suddenly going to get 8 times better.
HTML5 + WebM now! Death to Flash!!!
he’s obviously not a main event headliner….yet. so, you’re spending $54.95 to see Brock/Cain and the rest of the fights are gravy.
the only way we see Shields in a main event headliner is if it’s vs. GSP (and obviously afterwards if he becomes champion).
bottom line, enjoy his rise to the top as he’s going to bring the noise to this division and reak some havoc.

poor decision making for the UFC
Jake is a very very boring fighter
all the UFc will get another John Fitch version just a bit different that will grind out UD after UD
now out of the top 5 only one is not a boring fighter that being the pit bull
the WW needs new blood at the top rankings

This is starting to get annoying
He went to decision like twice in his past ten fights or something against people way bigger than he was. It’s going to be way different now that he’s fighting against people his size.

oh well
I am excited to see him in the UFC. He is a winner and I would like to see some of the top welterweights in the UFC challenged by someone different. What’s wrong with a grinder. MMA is a sport the last time I checked. Im interested to see how he does against GSP if he gets there.
You do know that
Shields never fought himself right.
So by your logic anyone who isn’t primarily a stand up fighter and anyone who looks for a submission is boring
Great post
and great use of cross-out so we could actually follow along with the reporting as it became increasingly clear how Shields would make his debut.
Shields Vs. Kampmann is an exciting fight, and if it happens in Shields home town, it’ll be the push he never got from Strikeforce, which never knew how to properly promote him.
