Bob Sapp's fight against Soa Palelei at Impact FC's PPV event this week has been cancelled after the promotion told him that the cost of a plane ticket from Europe (where Sapp's filming a movie) to Australia was too expensive.

Sapp explains to MMA Junkie:

"...Sapp wasn't shocked by the last-minute cancellation and speculated the promotion's ambitious schedule might be at fault. In the past, he required promoters to put his fight purses in an escrow account before he signed on the dotted line. This time, he didn't.

"That's why they used the loophole, and that's why they jumped," Sapp said.

The 6-foot-5, 350-pound fighter said he had assembled a training camp in Bulgaria to prepare for the bout and spent at least $10,000 on coaches, training partners, and living expenses.

The heavyweight said his team plans to draft a formal letter to the promotion asking for reimbursement of his expenses. If that fails, he may take legal action.

"I'm not going to allow anybody to screw me over," Sapp said.

Maybe they figured

they were going to be on the hook for paying for the in-flight meals. It’s a long flight to be feeding Bob Sapp…

A planet ticket? I knew Bob Sapp was a big guy, but goddamn!

Bob Sapp Fight Camp. Only $10,000.

by IWillPartyHard on Jul 14, 2010 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

Just how much was that ticket from Europe to Australia?

by who me on Jul 14, 2010 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

Varies from city to city, but I’m guessing around 2 or 3 grand.

by MMAussie on Jul 14, 2010 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s about what I found with expedia I assumed Sofia because he said he was training in Bulgaria and I thought the event was in Sidney.

by who me on Jul 14, 2010 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

If he got a ticket to Sidney, there’s no way he’s making that fight card..

by Benicio on Jul 15, 2010 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Expedia had tickets from Sofia Bulgaria to Sidney Australia and back for $7100 (last minute price, $3200 if they had booked it a couple of weeks ahead of time). Of course that is also coach, Sapp probably wanted first class.

by who me on Jul 14, 2010 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Sapp would probably need at least 4 seats if he travelled coach. Would still be a tight squeeze too.

by MMAussie on Jul 14, 2010 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Don't forget

he has to fly in his corner too which ends up getting pretty fucking expensive

by av1o3 on Jul 14, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Those guys would definitely fly coach, 3 coach tickets two weeks in advance would be under ten grand, a first class and two coach would be more like $16 to $18 grand.

Strikeforce paid Sapp $100k for the Tacoma event. If Impact FC was willing to pay something in that neighborhood for Sapp then they weren’t going to freak out over $10k in plane tickets. They have been flying guys in from all over for these two events.

by who me on Jul 14, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Couldn’t he just claim it as a tax deduction anyway?

by MMAussie on Jul 14, 2010 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

Tax deductions

mean a percentage comes back dollar -wise, not a flat-out reimbursement …

by Dootch on Jul 14, 2010 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Impact FC can't afford a plane ticket..

But can put on two shows in two weeks in Australia and pay the purses and other expenses for: Karo Parisyan, Carlos Newton, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Jeff Monson, Big John McCarthy (twice), Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Pedro Rizzo, Paul Daley, Denis Kang, Paulo Filho, Murilo Rua, and Murilo Bustamante.

I expect a lot of reports of fighters not getting paid

I just spoke with Breen

He’s claiming Sapp is full of it. More to come.

I was born and raised in Seattle

so I’ve been a fan of Sapp all the way back to his UW football days. Blowing open huge holes for “clock killin’ Cory Dillon”

Training camp 10 Gs?

Really Bob Sapp?… Really? You mean to tell me you spend more than 10$ on a training camp to learn how to cover and turtle up?

Bob Sapp’s training looks pretty expensive to me :D

That I’ve never seen this may be uncommon, but good lord that is some silly ass shit. Sapp must be half cut all the time, but I suppose he’d feel like a god there or something. The Horror. The Horror.

I’m thinking that at one time there was even a Bob Sapp store in Tokyo. He’s popular in Japan….for some odd reason.

I might have disagreed with your post 116 assessment, but this was golden.
