UFC 116 Look Back, UFC 117 and UFC on Versus 2 Preview, Vladimir Matyushenko Interview on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan

There weren't any major fights last weekend, but the train rolled on just the same.
We opened the show by setting up the show, talking more about Brock Lesnar, how many PPV buys UFC 116 likely did and mentioned Dan Gilbert's tirade against LeBron James and how it relates to Dana White.
Segment two is where we caught up with UFC light heavyweight contender Vladimir Matyushenko (a fuller write-up of this interview is coming). Matyushenko talks about Fedor's popularity in Russia, going to the BET Awards and why he deserves a title shot if he beats Jon Jones.
Segment three we go back to the phones and cover too many topics UFC-related to list here. And by the way, thanks to all the callers from across North America who are making the show better with their contributions.
In segment four we take a look into UFC 117, talk about any potential impact Dave Batista might have on Strikeforce and field yet more listener calls.
Segment five is a return to Brock Lesnar and what makes him such a special athlete. We also look ahead to James Toney and Randy Couture's heavyweight showdown at UFC 118.
Last, but certainly not least, we field a few more calls before going into the main event results from DREAM.15. I explain why I don't talk much MMA from Japan on my show as well as talk about whether Gilbert Melendez should fight a rematch against Shinya Aoki.
We are on Facebook, I'm on Twitter, James Kimball is on Twitter, Othello is on Twitter and the show's podcasts can all be found here. Email me here. Thanks for the support. SPREAD THE WORD.

Jon Bones Jones is going to be tough to beat.
I like Matyushenko, but Jones is a helluva striker. Comparable to Anderson in the variety of ways he can hit you.

He’s “helluva” athlete and wrestler. His striking is rudimentary in terms of technique.
Spinning elbows and kicks are good though, if you don’t have the technique, you at least have suspense effect.

yes
his stiking is his weak point IMO. He’s a “helluva” Greco GnP’er.
God help me, I have a problem. I'm a Shinya Aoki fan. I don't know what to do about it...

I like his striking.
It might be “rudimentary”, but it is diverse and effective allowing for him to get to that superior wrestling ability. The angles he sees are unlike the average strikers. That’s what makes his wrestiling and takedown so effective.
Plus, they come out quickly and h is able to put a variety of combinations together.
He might not be an elite striker, but he certainly isn’t “limited”.

he is not
comparable to Anderson, striking wise. He would need to KO someone.
Vera was a GnP TKO not an Anderson level knockout.

Knockouts and range of striking (as I am suggesting) is two different things
In his limited fighting time in the UFC, Jones has displayed that he can find different angles to get his punches and kicks off. That is something that Vera has not yet grasped, nor many of the other former “next big thing” in the weight class have been able to show at this point.
He is long, rangy, and has many different ways of getting a punch or kick off.
Anderson Silva is a legend…
… Bones Jones has the same characteristics as The Spider with a high level of wrestling skills.
I believe that there are some parallels.

Not many of his punches and kicks land. His opponents (Hamill, JO’B) land quite a few shots considering that he has massive reach advantage over both of them (not good strikers). If you’re supposed to be kind of Spider level striker and O’Brien is landing jabs on your face, you can tell that something is not right.
If you’re athletic and explosive you can throw all sorts of crazy stuff, spinning, jumping sparkling elbows and it has nothing to do with level of striking. Jones was throwing kicks and spinning elbows against Gusmao, which was cool, but at the same time he was throwing arm punches.
Jones’ speed and explosiveness lets him get away with many mistakes and that’s it. Let not kid our selfs that in the striking department Jones has something that Vera hasn’t grasp. Good footwork, distance, timing, combinations, accuracy, those are the traits that describe a good striker, not different angles (alone). Check out Vera’s and Silva’s stats in the striking department and compare them to Jones’.
Jones is creative, which is similar to Silva, I’ll give you that.

can’t really add much to that.

I knew Lesnar was going to be a special athlete when...
… He picked up the 500lbs+ Big Show at Survivor Series and gave him an F-5 bomb!

Rashad sitting out untill shogun is healthy shouldnt happen..what do you think about this?
I think AS needs to move up to LHW division and be given a shot at rashad evans for a intrim title belt.. shogun will be out for a long time and rashad shouldnt sit out this long..carwin had to fight while waiting on brock..rashad is no diffrent. What do you think?
I think you should leave the match making to the pro’s, Anderson isn’t getting a title shot at anything until he starts dominating again and Rashad has earned his shot.

cause what's your Rampage to Rashad Evans/"

Solution
Many people these days have smartphones, and if they have access to apps, i know on my iPhone 106.7wjkf is available to listen to from the AOL Radio, Sticher Radio, and CBS Radio apps. It may make it easier on a few people to listen live and still get listner questions if they have an andriod or iphone
The Droid
is too cool.

Luke, I know we can’t hear the callers on Ustream, but I also can’t listen to the show through the website. It says it is not available in my area, or something. Must be because I’m trying to listen to it from Vancouver, Canada. Just wondering if there were any solutions around this. Otherwise, I guess I’ll just wait for the podcasts.
Also, good show. Brock is a freaking monster. I also really think GSP is on the cusp of something really big, endorsement-wise. Beyond Gatorade. I don’t think he’ll ever be as popular as Brock, but it would be the next best thing.
Good show
I esp like your impassioned take on the demands of MMA.
I would imagine this to be a result of corporate radio, but the opening music beds could use a little more imagination. The songs are in that purgatory between brand new and old school. We call them “stale” in the club DJ world. But content-wise: home run.
Thanks for posting
