Two things

1.) Danzig/Wiman II as a co-main is a joke. But what’s funnier is the full article on the UFC website says these guys are “lightweight contenders”. Miller/Tibau holds much more relevance to the division but hey they’re all on the same show, right?

2.) The UFC has got to stop using the same poster style for the Fight Night cards. They’ve used something like this 4 shows running.

The Dos Equis guy wishes he was Brock Lesnar.

I agree

Danzig and Wiman as the co main event is pathetic… Danzig almost got cut, and Wiman is nothing in the division.

by majuca8 on Jul 12, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I think the only reason this is co-main is because of the power of TUF

Casuals will have heard of Mac Danzig by now, definitely not Jim Miller or Gleison Tibau.

Granted I think this is limited to Spike, because Versus in their two shows hasn’t had anyone from TUF even touch the main card.

The Dos Equis guy wishes he was Brock Lesnar.

by SSreporters on Jul 12, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

could be, but still a joke to call that fight the co-main event. neither of these guys have any revelance whatsoever in the LW division. In fact, you can make the debate that both are fighting for their rights to stay in the UFC….so not co-main event worthy

by SNATCHFACE on Jul 12, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Wiman is probably staying

He’s 6-3 in the UFC (granted the last fight was bullcrap oviously) but he’s usually in an entertaining fight and hasn’t had a bad run that could cause him to be cut.

Danzig on the other hand has been 3-3, not counting the events of Wiman/Danzig I which have given birth to Woman/Danzig II. If he loses to Wiman again, I don’t know as they can justify keeping Mac around.

A few more

power slams by Tibau and they’ll learn his name. Now if he could just finish…

by rzor on Jul 12, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m constantly amazed that a guy with his submission skills, raw power, and nasty take downs can’t hold someone down long enough to finish.

Totally agree Truck. Another impressive performance by Pearson and he’s ready to face someone top 10 imo

by Mattyjudo on Jul 12, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I second that...

Miller’s been trucking along quite nicely IMO, with only his loss to Escudero really messing up his track record, and Pearson’s been on a tear of good fights since his TUF win. If he gets past Miler, he could arguably be one of the better TUF champs of recent history.

by Hardcase on Jul 12, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Pearson has been plain smashing fools and hasn't been put in many bad spots.

If he can maintain that kind of dominance I wold be more than glad to see him against some stiffer competition.

by truck on Jul 12, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed...

Maybe against the winner of Guida/Dos Anjos?

And I’m thinking the winner of Wiman/Danzig against Sotiropoulos.

by Hardcase on Jul 12, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Pearson has looked really good but I think he's been getting favorable match ups

The Miller fight I think is gonna mean alot, because Cole should have a distinct advantage on the ground.

Winner of Wiman/Danzig is a step back for Soto I’m thinking more like the winner of Dunham/Sherk or the loser of Maynard/Florian.

by doonerthesooner on Jul 12, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you are bang on with the Sotiropolous match ups.

His opponent and the rest of the matchups at the top of the LW division will be greatly altered based on who win Penn / Edgar 2.

by truck on Jul 12, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know I want to see Soto challenged, I big strong wrestler would be a good test (unless Sherk still thinks he can box)

But a fight with Kenny would be tough for him due to Kenny’s definitive advantage on the feet.

Ride the Tiger!

by doonerthesooner on Jul 12, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Between the two...

I’m leaning towards the Dunham/Sherk winner over the KenFlo/Gray loser for Soto to step up and fight next. And between Dunham and Sherk, I don’t envy Soto’s chances in trying to take either out…unless Sherk still thinks he can box, as you already pointed out.

by Hardcase on Jul 12, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm still on the fence with Dunham I didn't get to see the Griffin fight and I had Griffin taking that one.

His mat game is strong I don’t think Soto will be able to control him like he did everyone else, and I guess a wash on the feet unless Dunham just looked great against Tyson.

Ride the Tiger!

by doonerthesooner on Jul 12, 2010 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunham looked really good against Tyson, but he also showed a disturbing trend: he can be in complete control of a fight and almost let it get away. He’s managed to recover so far when that happens, but someone like Soto who just keeps coming, gets in your face, makes you react instead of initiate, will take massive advantage of that sort of thing.

That being said, Soto almost gave away the Pellegrino fight at the buzzer. But don’t think that Dunham will be able to show a lot more off the mat than either Batman or Joe Daddy, both of whom are pretty damn good on the ground. George schooled them both, handily.

winner of Wiman/Danzig against Sotiropoulos

I am not a fan of that one… Neither guy matters in the title picture.

I would consider the winner of any one of the other three LW fights on the card to be on par with or ahead of Wiman/Danzig. I would rank the winners in this order with 3 and 4 being a toss up and potentially fighting each other.

1) Jim Miller (17-2) vs. Gleison Tibau (21-6)
2) Cole Miller (16-4) vs. Ross Pearson (11-3)
3) Mac Danzig (19-8-1) vs. Matt Wiman (12-5)
4) Efrain Escudero (13-1) vs. John Gunderson (23-7-1)

by truck on Jul 12, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with Truck

Sotiropoulos needs to fight someone more relevant than either Danzig or Wiman.
However, personally I’d put the winner of Miller-Pearson closer to contention than the winner of Miller-Tibau. In fact the victor of that fight might be a nice matchup for G-Sot if they pull off a dominant performance…

B-A-K-A-S-U-R-V-I-V-O-R

by Mattyjudo on Jul 12, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Miller-Tibau is much more relevant than the other Miller fight. Jim Miller would be 7-1 in the UFC, with the loss to Maynard and 5 straight wins if he won (fun side fact, included in those 7 wins are dominations of Wiman and Danzig.) Tibau would have won 5 of 6, with the only loss a contentious split decision.

I suppose Pearson could make a case for being higher on the ladder than Tibau, if those were the winners, but the UFC likes taking their TUF winners slow, so I’d say he’d likely still be farther from contention than Tibau. Cole would be below Tibau and well below Jim.

If Belcher wins this

I want to see him fight Belfort for the title shot that Vitor has been so generously gifted.

Pretty good for a Fight Night card IMO...

The Wiman/Danzig fight as co-main event looks surprising at first, but I gather they’re thinking there might be more heat for that fight because of the controversial sub in the first fight.

by Hardcase on Jul 12, 2010 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

Danzig/wiman is gonna be a good one for sure I was excited for the fight the first time around.

Since we got screwed outta seeing that fight I’m glad the rematch will be aired. I’m buying my tickets soon.

TUF

Is there a TUF winner with less appeal than Danzig?

by TMadeBurner on Jul 12, 2010 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

With less?

Lutter? Kendall? Not sure.

I think he’s a good fighter, but I also can’t help but think he was a little overrated from the start, due to being the most accomplished guy on his TUF season.

Seasons 6, 8, and 10 are probably the worst seasons to date

6 especially because Tommy Speer’s only claim to fame in the UFC is getting trucked by Rumble.

Danzig's a decent fighter...

…he’s just a smallish guy in an absolute shark tank of a division. Dude needs to drop to FW imo but he won’t untill he has to coz fighting in UFC is a lot more lucrative than WEC or any of the alternatives

Some people still care about Grove as fighter.

Lutter still brings back nostalgia…

The only thing people remember Danzig for is being vegan…

by truck on Jul 12, 2010 3:56 PM EDT reply actions

Kendall…I dunno, I just find him too erratic in his fight performance. It just feels like even with some of the wins he’s racked up that he’s been a downward course ever since that great win over Belcher.

Lutter…the only nostalgia I’ve seen around him is the occasional person musing, “What if he didn’t fail to make weight/didn’t gas against Silva?”

by Hardcase on Jul 12, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

UFC is doing a great job with these Fight Nights

I think with the UFC having such a deep roster we’re not going to see many more Nate Diaz-headlined shows and more of the Florian/Gomi + Maia/Belcher stuff.

So...

The Wiman/Danzig co-main is due to the “storyline” of Yves stopping the first fight prematurely? Really, is that what it is? There is no precedence beyond that, and I think it’s pretty pathetic. I mean, I think it will be a good fight, but come on now.

That being said, I’ve got Belcher over Maia. I think Belcher controls the pace on the feet and stuffs takedowns. I see him eventually catching and scoring a TKO over Maia.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

Maia should be able to beat Belcher. After all,Belcher did get in trouble on the mat with such esteemed grapplers as Jason Day and Kendall Grove.Maia is just a wee bit better than those two when it comes to twisting limbs and applying chokes and such.

Heck, now that I think of it,Patrick Cote got Belcher down and had him in some sort of a kimura at one point in the first round of their fight.Unless Belcher blows Maia’s brains out in the first thirty seconds of the fight like Marquardt did to him,I don’t see how Maia doesn’t trip him to the mat and tap him in short order.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
