Shinya Aoki: "I Knew Kawajiri Never Taps... I Was Hoping for an Open-Fracture"
Shinya Aoki talked to Sportnavi after defending his lightweight title by submitting Tatsuya Kawajiri on DREAM.15:
"When I grabbed him, I felt that I could finish it... When I caught him and tried to submit him, I heard a loud crackle sound. He did not tap so I thought 'Ok, this match just became a death-fight' and I was going to destroy his leg. I knew Kawajiri never taps so I could not win without breaking his bone. I was hoping for an open-fracture."
"No one could have endured [that submission] like Kawajiri. His heart is iron."
On why he did not wear his trademark tights:
There was no reason and there's no reason to wear long spats in every fight.

I would like to see a judo chop on this, a lot of people think of the ankle lock as a weak submission, but if it truly did cause damage I would like to know more. I always like the lock myself when rolling.

Aoki is a Man Behind the Sun.
"...ride life straight to perfect laughter,
it's the only good fight there is."
Yeah, everytime I see Aoki I have a flashback from that “movie”.

Scariest Fighters in MMA
Melvin Manhoef – Kill or be killed
Cris Cyborg – Unrelenting violence
Shinya Aoki – If he gets a limb it’s over
Paul Harris/Imanari – Destroyers of the lower limbs

@deowade
Agreed.
Aoki for any flaws is still one of the scariest fighters around.
He glued himself to Kawajiri’s leg and finished, plain and simple. We have seen it many times before. He gets a limb and it is over. How many other submission artists can consistently grab a limb and have the finish become a formality within the first 30 seconds of a fight?
They guy has something like 10 submission victories that occurred within the first 3 minutes of the fight. Crazy!!
Imanari
his sub on Mike Brown is the scariest thing i’ve seen in MMA (Hornbuckle/Gono and Carwin/Wellish being clode seconds). Brown didn’t even have a chance to tap. Imanari working the kneelock one direction that wasn’t working, so he switches and in one motion fully dislocates the knee. god damn. anybody got a gif?

Can find a gif but here's the sequence that you speak of in pictures

And the video
But back to Aoki. This is the scariest thing that he said.
You said something to Kawajiri after the fight, what was it?
“I could show you 100% [meaning either he could have fully destroyed his leg or he didn’t give the fight his full potential] but I chose not to because I respect you. Thank you for this fight.”

Cue Bas from the Pride days:
You should never tap from an achilles lock, Mauro…it’s just a pain move. It doesn’t do any damage.
The way Aoki did it, the foot was completely twisted. I don’t think the pressure was only on the achilles anymore, it was more like a toe hold.
But yeah, that quote was dumb.
an achilles lock is a compression maneuver and only involves compression of the achilles tendon. that’s it. tendon compressed against bone, there is no risk of fracture or tearing.
he may have lost to an achilles lock, but you gotta remember that aoki had been wrenching on his leg for a full minute before kawajiri tapped, much of that in a heel hook.

What exaclty is an "open fracture"?
Does he mean bone coming out of the skin?
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

I think he is talking about
a compound fracture, so yes it would be a bone sticking out of the skin. Think on that for a bit.

UGH.
Well, this is just the normal thing for Aoki: wins a fight, starts to gain some respect, then sets the whole thing on fire.

I think what he meant was, that since he knew Kawajiri would not tap except for something extreme, he was looking for something very painful so he’d have no choice. Or that the ref would have to stop it.
I’m not sure but this is my interpretation of that statement.

Yes and No
He said at first he heard a destroying sound like ‘bagi bagi’. After Kawajiri didn’t tap, he said to himself “okay, this fight became a death match.” He literally said he wanted to destroy his leg. My GF is Japanese and she translated it. I asked her if specifically if he said he had to destroy or wanted to.

The reason he didn’t wear the grappling pants has to be to prove the naysayers that he can’t win without them, since he had lost his last fight vs Melendez without the pants

I think a few of the problems that some folk have with Aoki's attitude...
…are a genuine case of cultural miscommunication.
Sure, there’s no ambiguity about someone breaking a man’s arm then flipping them off, but in this instance I honestly think he’s trying to show Kawajiri a lot of respect in his post-fight comments. I had the pleasure of training judo over in Japan for a while as a young man and, inexplicable and idiotic as it may seem from a western perspective, there’s a serious stigma about tapping out over there if you’re suppose to be a ‘warrior’. This is a country where a guy on thir olympic judo squad can go from being a sporting superstar to social pariah coz he taps instead of letting his arm break, and even in training players are going under from chokes instead of tapping out on a regular basis.
I guess what I’m trying to get at with this little diatribe is that a lot of the stuff Aoki says which seems a bit barbaric or sinister to a lot of fans is actually him expressing respect for his opponent. I believe that’s the case in this instance anyway

I didn't have a problem with Aoki's attitude after this fight.
He seemed very respectful. Kawajiri was cool with what he said too.
also consider
that fight fans cheer on a fighter when he claims he’s going to punch someone’s head off, but cringe when they say they’re going to break his arms.
what’s the difference?
everything dana white says is a complete lie
by slantedwindows on Jul 12, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions
The difference is that you can't see brain damage when it happens
Plus, manly fisticuffs doesn’t have nearly the same kind of social stigma attached to it as bone-breaking joint locks.

Its a paradox.
If you tap, then you’re not a real warrior. At the same time, not tapping means not accepting defeat; which to some people is incredibly disrespectful. In this particular instance, he says how much respect he has for Kawajiri and still “wanted to destroy his leg” Against other opponents, he has been downright joyful about breaking a limb. In short, if someone you like doesn’t tap its respectable. If you don’t like someone and they don’t tap, they are disrespectful.

The footlock/anklelock is NOT
The straight footlock is not just compression move. Many people falsely believe it is “just a pain move.” A correct footlock forces the front of the foot down while pressure comes up into the Achilles, essentially tearing the foot away from the ankle. A lot of people DO execute the move by applying pressure strictcly to the tendon, and even then, as a compression lock, it can cause injury. If you ever get a chance to see Braulio Estima’s footlock on Rafael Lovato Jr. at ADCC 2009, it is truly incredible. As soon as he falls back for the lock, it instantly breaks Lovato Jr’s foot. It looked just like Aoki’s, but the damage happened immediately.
A couple people here have suggested that Bas’ comments on not to tap to the footlock are correct. They aren’t. Even if someone just does a compression version of the lock, I have images I can post of people’s Achille tendons swollen 5x normal, with the entire foot and calf black and blue.
