Quote of the Day: Brendan Schaub: "I'm Ready for Cro Cop or Gilbert Yvel"

Photo

"I think I took a step ahead of the rest of those [up-and-comers] beating a guy like Tuchscherer," Schaub said. "If you look at the other up-and-comers, ... they're fighting guys (that are) not as experienced.

"I think I'd definitely be ready for a (Mirko) 'Cro Cop' (Filipovic) or a Gilbert Yvel. I won't call anyone out, but if Joe Silva calls me, I'm ready for whatever he wants to throw my way."

Seems like a sideways step.

I would like it to make sure he is for real though. I’d love to see him wrestle. A fight with Gilbert Yvel would be very exciting.

I guess. It’s not unreasonable to deduce that when those sentence are back-to-back.

That said, my point is that if Russow is a sideways step, Yvel is a clear step down.

Makes sense.

Maybe sideways step is a bad way of putting it. I’m just not sure how much a win over Russow would do for Schaubs career. That said, I agree that a fight with Yvel, that would be exciting, would do equally as little.
This is why I’m not a matchmaker. I don’t know what the hell to do with the guy.

Yvel a clear step down?

I don’t know about that. He may not have the best ground skills, but Yvel can take out all but the best strikers. If Schaub stood with Yvel, he’d get battered.

And i’m not even going to discuss Crocop; Schaub needs to slowwwwww down.

C'mon bro

Mirko just outlasted and outstruck Pat Barry, do you really think Schaub would do better than HD?? Crocop showed some fucking LASER precision with his hands, some lightning fast kicks, and generally just showed that he still has some left in the tank.

Brandon is a solid prospect still, sure, but at this point there’s no way he can lay a systematic beating on Mirko like Dos Santos or Kongo did, and his ground skills aren’t enough to really threaten him.

Don’t oversell Cro Cop. He was getting his ass kicked in the first round. Barry breaks his hand in the first and then his foot in the second and suddenly Cro Cop pulls it out in the second and then decisive third round. This is not a coincidence.

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

by Geno Mrosko on Jul 12, 2010 2:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not overselling him

Mirko is by no means even a shadow of his former self. ’06 Crocop would bend his current self over a sink.

That said, Schaub got slept by fucking Roy Nelson. Don’t get me wrong, Big Country is a hoss, but Crocop’s striking is leaps and bounds more focused, and Brendan is no HD Barry.

by Earl Montclair on Jul 10, 2010 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Russow is NOT a sideways step

Russow is not a side step, he is a massive step down. He gets pummeled for three rounds offering absolutely nothing except a concrete skull to smash fists against and then lands this amazing punch, and somehow that equates to what Brendan Schaub has done in the UFC, namely destroy Chase Gormley and Christian Tuchscherer in under 2 minutes total, in brutal fashion. I think not. Schaub deserves a much better opponent than Russow. I guess it would be nice if he could go knock out Russow in about a minute as well, but who knows with that chin of his.

I can see why he is asking for Cro Cop, as that is the smallest step up possible. Yvel can’t be considered a step up, but the fight would be far more entertaining than a Russow fight.

They should give him Stefan Struve if Struve wins his next fight or Ben Rothwell.

by IWillPartyHard on Jul 10, 2010 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Russow is 2-0 in the UFC
Schaub’s last two opponents have a combined 1-4 record in the UFC

Russow is definitely a step up

by Steve4192 on Jul 11, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Also, Russo’s UFC wins came against two guys who are a combined 3-3 in the UFC. He has a much higher quality of wins than Schaub does.

by Steve4192 on Jul 11, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

In my opinion Russow is in no way a step down for a fighter like Schaub at this point of his career. Its a very solid match and test for a young up and coming prospect like Schaub in my opinion .Today so many MMA fans journalist, and reporters are so quick to call for propects to be thrust right into the deep end of a division after only a few W’s. Especially even more so if they have a easy time beating that competition and look good doing so. It seems to happpen all the time anymore in MMA especially to young Zuffa fighters.A young fighter like Schaub should still be learning skills in mma and getting cage experience and time and be matched up wit the proper opponents and not be rushed into fights that might be to much to fast at this point of his career.

Rushing a fighter to test himself against competition he is not yet ready to fight can really hurt, set back or even kill a young fighters career ! But this is not all bad if you ask me ? It just shows how much new young talent is really coming into the sport of MMA today. To me this is just another example of how MMA is just like all other major sports in North America. Fans,Reporters and journalist wanting and calling for a young athlete to bloom and flower before they hardly even have any roots at all happens all the time in all other sports and its nothing new in MMA eather as we have witnessed the last few years with all the new young talent coming into the sport, Its just shows how much new talent is really coming into MMA today.

Getting back to Schaub a fighter like Brendan Schaub should be getting cage time and experience at this point of his career and advancing up the ranks of the HW devision very very slowly and only fighting hand picked oppomnets . Sure there are those rare exceptions in sports like a Stephen Strasburg, LeBron James, Sidney Crosby, etc in MMA like a GSP,Cain Velasquez, Brock Lesnaer etc but Schaub is just not at that level. I just think a good looking up and comer like Schaub should be fighting as much as possible agasint the lower to mid lower levels of the devision and getting his cage time, experience and most importantly to build his skills for the next level when the time is ready. Give the kid some time in the UFC to build himself and his skill set up before you start givng him bigger fights and names. This is such a problem in all sports with young talent and mma is no different I guess .

by Shocbomb on Jul 11, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

As a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs – a sports franchise among the absolute worst for destroying their own talented prospects – I totally agree. Schaub may have smashed Tuchscherer, but he also got annihilated by Roy Nelson. He’s young and inconsistent, and you have to allow a young prospect time to become more consistently good or you risk them becoming consistently bad, or worse, risk them breaking down physically and mentally.

Cro Cop released a statement that he only wanted big name fights and would like to have Big Nog, Randy Couture and a Gonzaga rematch for his last three fights. He also stated that he would prefer to fight in Europe instead of the US. If he does sign back with the UFC look for him to fight special event type fights to draw for European expansion (or perhaps on another Abu Dhabi card). He most definitely isn’t fighting Schaub.

I hope Joe Silva gives him Yvel, but if that were to happen we would see Schaub try to grind a decision once he tastes the shins or leather of a real heavyweight striker.

he could be in SF by the end of the year regardless of the bullsh*t going on w/the CSAC. and how can you call him old when he’s one year younger than Brock? makes no sense

He can be in Strikeforce if he can get CSAC to let him get a license again. Perhaps blowing off four appeal hearings in a row wasn’t the best way to convince them that he is serious about getting a US fight license again. There are a lot of issues with both sides in this situation but in the end it’s going to be CSAC that makes the final decision on whether Josh Barnett fights in the US again or not.

Gilbert Yvel is obviously not a UFC level heavyweight and has lost to a bunch of cruddy fighters in his career. Calling out someone that Minowa beat years ago isn’t exactly reaching for the stars.

For a guy who only started fighting in 2008 and has only had 7 fights (not counting the TUF house) fighting a guy with 53 fights against some of the toughest guys in the sport isn’t really a step down. Schaub is a serious prospect in the sport but lets not get ahead of ourselves, he’s still very much just a prospect who’s best victory has been against a guy who fought in the Yamma pit. Trying to put Yvel out of the UFC would be a decent test for him at this point in his career.

Schaub vs Gonzaga

Your style's like garbage cans meant to be taken out on a weekly basis
Ever since your first record you've been in a state of suspended animation
You look like Snuffleuffagus and Australopithecus
Me cray, you abacus
