McCarthy has been calling PERFECT fights since UFC 5. His Judgment and decisive action are second to none

damn. lost the text ...

BJM is still an excellent ref, but I think Herb & Josh have passed him up. John gets a little too involved in the action at times for my liking, and people forget that has made his share of blunders.

BJM used to let people get murdered in the ring

He’s an example from learning from many, many, many mistakes.

Couldn't be more wrong

Remember Gary Goodridge blasting that guy in a crucifix with elbows and knees to the head? That fight marked a new change in mma. Referees were not allowed to stop fights, only the fighters could give up or corner throw in the towel. Big John interviened(thankfully) and stopped the fight, and from then on referees were allowed to stop the fights.

Actually, the first ref stoppage was Gerard Gordeau versus Teila Tuli at UFC 1…

Big John only reffed on UFC where he was not allowed to stop fights. I’m pretty sure no one is bitching about his performance in that event.

by Steve4192 on Jul 12, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I started to assume

that Big John would be back eventually but found it odd that Joe Rogan called Herb Dean the best in the business the last PPV. Now I think Dean is a solid #2 but Big John is def #1 !!

by bucco69 on Jul 10, 2010 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

I'd definitely put Herb #1

Big John is a very good ref but gets a lot of slack for the few mistakes he makes because of his celebrity.

I’m not calling him a shitty ref, and it’s nothing but a positive to have him back reffing UFC cards, BUT it’s my opinion that Herb Dean is the better ref.

Failing that, do a google search for his quotes. There’s some gems out there.

“Take away the right to say ‘fuck’ and you take away the right to say ‘fuck the government.’”
“I only said [cocksucking], I didn’t do it, man.” (Said to the arresting officer)

NB: There’s a routine featuring the dreaded “n-word” – I won’t reprint it here, but it’s on his wikiquote page.

Herb Dean controversially took a point away from Keith Jardine less than a month ago.

None of these guys are perfect, and I don’t know why people view them as such.

To be honest, I don’t think anyone does view them as perfect. There is no such thing when it comes to reffing, but these guys are GOOD, especially considering how many really freakin’ bad ones there are out there. There’s always bound to be mistakes sometimes, but Big John and Herb Dean are pretty consistent in their high quality. Yamasaki and Rosenthal aren’t too shabby either.

by Horselover Fat on Jul 11, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d put Rosenthal above Yamasaki at this point. The ref I’m currently disappointed in is Lavigne. He used to be the guy I wanted in a big fight, but he’s really over-thinking things lately. i think he got rattled by a couple of his mistakes and is trying too hard to be perfect, resulting in dumb calls. If he could relax and get it together, I think he could still be a very good ref.

I agree about Yves Lavigne, he is definitely the worst of the ones currently used in the UFC. He has made a lot of really terrible early / late /half stoppages in recent time, like you said he just seems really insecure in his reffing at this point. With him in the ring you can almost guarantee some stupid or dangerous shit will go down. In short, he sucks!

by Horselover Fat on Jul 11, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Lavigne worse than Mazzagatti?

Uh, no. Hot Tub is easily the worst.

I have Mazz and Tan Dan as my worst, though the random dude in Vancouver and some of the regional jokers in the UK are FAR FAR worse. Thankfully they just don’t get regular use.

Wow, what great news!

I know this is a silly dream, but if we could get John & Herb officiating every since UFC match from now on, I don’t think I’d ever question a ref’s call ever again.

A man can dream right?

sigh……

It's gonna be great

to see Big John back in the ufc. I hope he becomes a regular once again

by 19Miles on Jul 10, 2010 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Hopefully he mends his fences with Zuffa and they exert some pressure on Kizer to push his licensing through in Nevada.

The thing I always hated about Big John

is how he would come grab fighters like children and make them come to the middle of the ring. And also, he just had an arrogance about him. Other than that, olove the guy.

My favorite big John moment is (after grabbing Matt Serra as described earlier), he’s like “This is your time. The stage is yours.” and then does the 360 turn wih Matt’s hand in the air as Buffer announces him champion.

My least favorite Big John moments … the Saku-Silviera stoppage and him breaking Brian Johnston’s nose with one of his overzealous fight-stopping tackles.

Home is Vegas, and he hasn’t even applied for a license there, to my knowledge.

That has had me curious for a while, if he gets denied it would be public knowledge why correct?

He applied, but NSAC refuses to look at the application. Kizer claimed “we don’t need any refs right now, we’ll consider him when the need arises”.

I’m sorry Keith, but every time Maz & Big Tan Dan step in the cage, the need arises.

After one UFC event (not in NV) do you think he will be back in Vegas?

… or a kick in the pants.

I’m still not 100% sold that Zuffa is behind his banishment. They’ve only done a couple of California events since he returned to reffing, so it could just be coincidence he hasn’t done a Zuffa show in California until now. Kizer OTOH is definitely carrying a grudge.

Big John is the best

And all of this nonsense about Herb Dean has got to stop. Herb Dean isn’t even in the top 5.

i think that in no specific order it should be big john, herb, josh r., and two guys from japan

I honestly believe Mazz and Yamasaki are superior to Herb. I’d put Herb in line with Tan Dan.

I used to love how the commentators would crack up every time he started the “GIVEUP GIVEUP GIVEUP?” thing. On one hand, there’s the tensions of a submission struggle; on the other, the commentary team is laughing like hyenas. Great if odd juxtaposition.

How does the selection process work?

There was an interview some time back with Big John and he alluded that he was simply just waiting for a call from Dana. However, it was my understanding that the Commission picks the ref. Otherwise, people like Steve M would never be invited back. How does the selection process work? I think an entire article on that would be very interesting.

by b_radical on Jul 12, 2010 6:42 PM EDT reply actions

John is waiting on a call from NSAC, not Dana.
