Dan Miller (11-3, 3-3 UFC) will not be cut following his decision loss to Michael Bisping at UFC 114, and will get at least one more chance to fight inside the Octagon.

glad they did this

woulda been a shitty move to cut him considering all he’s been dealing with.

and that’s not to say other fighters don’t deal with personal issues as well… just a different ballgame when it involves kids.

Agreed.

Also: although someone will point out that he’s now lost three in a row, if you look beyond that and realize that of those three, one just fought for the title, one is about to fight for the title, and other is Bisping, I think the UFC at least owes him a tune-up fight before letting him go.

Plus the Miller brothers have a long history...

of coming in as late replacements to save fights. I have a feeling that goes a long way with the UFC brass.

Dude. It's Anderson Silva.
If he gives a damn he will end Sonnen’s night by either sub or KO.

what about dan lauzon? haven’t heard anything about that dude

by kanodogg on Jun 8, 2010 12:14 PM EDT reply actions

good question

this link: http://www.bjpenn.com/profiles/blogs/dan-lauzon-headed-to-team suggests he’s gonna start training with renzo gracie’s team now, but doesn’t mention anything about getting the axe.

Don’t know why people thought he’d be cut, the mans a grappler and stood with Bisping for three hard rounds. Not only that, he looked pretty damn good. Not at Bisping’s level, but for a guy that isn’t known for his striking, he looked quite crisp.

That's what bugged me though

I wasn’t impressed with Miller’s striking and was clearly losing the fight but only decided to even try and take it to the ground in the third round where he had his best chance of winning

Never said he was smart. lol

Why does everyone forget that Bisping has a sick sprawl, is impossible to hold down, and has dangerous GnP if he sweeps you?

by judonerd on Jun 8, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Because its Bisping

People tend to forget everything other than wanting to see him knocked out

by av1o3 on Jun 9, 2010 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

It could have just been a really bad style match up for Miller

but I thought he looked awful compared to Bisping who is currently ranked 15th
I thought Miller had:
a good chin
good conditioning
strong heart
sub-par striking
sub-par take downs
sub-par size, strength and quickness

I’m glad he didn’t get cut and will have a chance to develop. But, he has a longs ways to go to be relevant imho

I’m glad Miller wasn’t cut, and hope he and his family can pull through this horrible time.

Sidenote: Does the UFC have any kind of mental health staff/services for their fighters? If so, Someone pass my resumé to Dana. If not, someone pass my proposal and resumé to Dana.

It would bankrupt the UFC

if they had to “fix” all of their fighters lol j/k

Not a bad idea. But, I’m guessing it is up to the fighter to hire their own “mental health coach”, unless it is something why out there like the Rampage incident. The UFC certainly doesn’t hire lawyers for the fighters when they get in trouble with the law.

Don’t kill my dream of being on the UFC’s Counseling staff please. You don’t see me knocking the broom out of your hand in your dreams!!!!

All jokes aside, it’d probably help in the long run. I don’t care so much about the UFC, as I do the fighters. I’d love to combine my career with my addiction. So it’s either this or sell drugs.

I think Miller would have a good fight with Jorge Rivera, just an opinion. Vet vs. Young Gun. Classic Grap vs Strike

What is this personal problems that people are talking about??

But this is awesome, this guy came in and looked good for being over matched. Give him Grove next or maybe the loser of Brown / Lytle.

Oh jesus, you know i read that somewhere about an MMA fighter with sick kids and i never did find out who they were talking about. This dude is one tough motherfucker, many would crumble after something like that happening to them.

I’d like to see him take a winable fight. He’s fought Maia, Sonnen and Bisping in his lasst 3 fights, which is pretty tough for anyone. How bout a fight against Joe Doerkson, ora John Salter…

by Fedorable on Jun 8, 2010 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Happy the kept Miller on the roster. He is a solid Mid level gate keeper for the MW devision.

by Shocbomb on Jun 8, 2010 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

right..

He’s beaten John Howard, Ryan McGivern, Rob Kimmons, Matt Horwich, and Jake Rosholt. Granted, there are no top contenders, but its still pretty good list of game opponents. I wouldn’t say hes “great” but I absolutly wouldn’t say he sucks…

by Fedorable on Jun 8, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve never even heard of any of those guys..
It’s just the way i see Miller when he fights, he looks scared, flinches, he just doesn’t look like he’s all out for MMA..

by ontite on Jun 9, 2010 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

John Howard is undefeated in the UFC. Jake Rosholt was one of the hottest prospects in the division with his wrestling pedigree before Dan tapped him in about 70 seconds. To say those are not credible wins is to say that anybody without a top-10 win doesn’t belong.

On the same card Miller fought, Ryan Jensen fought and won. Do you really think Ryan Jensen goes to decision with Sonnen, Maia and Bisping, while, in the case of Maia, nearly winning the decisive round? If Miller dives into Maia’s guard with a little less gusto after dropping him and stays on top for the round, he beats the guy whose next fight was for the belt, in a split decision. Saying he sucks for losing to back-to-back title challengers, and a UFC top-10 (not top-10 overall) middleweight, all by hard-fought decision, is dumb. There are many fighter in the middleweight division Dan mops the floor with, and nobody he doesn’t at least give a fight to.

He's actually pretty good

if he didnt’t have such terrible shit going on in his life. Most fighters wouldn’t fight if they were in the same position as Miller.

In the meanwhile ...

somewhere in Red Deer, Jason MacDonald is writing on his blog on sportsnet.ca that how unfair it is that Miller (who is an inferior fighter compared to himself, mind you) did not get cut like he did.

And somewhere in Brazil, Maia would read it and beg to differ.

Was MacDonald cut a second time after suffering the broken leg at 113?

You’d think the UFC would give him another chance considering the circumstances of that fight, unless he was only brought in on a one-fight deal.

by Scott Haber on Jun 9, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

probably a one fight deal. joe dorksen (sp?) won his last fight and now hes fighting for a different promotion.

by Riley_96 on Jun 9, 2010 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Doerksen had a special clause

Several sites confirmed that Doerksen signed a one-fight deal for UFC 113 with the regional fight after 113 already booked. Apparently his contract stipulated that he had to win that second fight to be brought back in for a multi-fight deal, and since he did, we’ll likely see Doerksen in the UFC again for his next fight.

I believe MacDonald said he’d have another UFC fight when healthy, but may remember it wrong.

Hopefully. But Dana did cut Corey Hill after he broke his leg.

by av1o3 on Jun 10, 2010 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

But not before taking care of the medical bills...

if I remember correctly.
