Megumi Fujii vs. Sarah Schneider Set for Bellator XXI, Sarah Kaufman vs. Roxanne Modafferi in the Works for Strikeforce Challengers IX

Bellator XXI, June 10, from the Seminole Hard Rock Resort & Casino in Hollywood, Florida according to fiveouncesofpain.com:

The undefeated Japanese submission specialist Megumi "Mega Megu" Fujii (19-0) widely believed to be the pound-for-pound best female on the planet will be returning to the United States since March of 2007 when she faces off with the durable veteran Sarah "White Tiger" Schneider (4-4) at Bellator 21.

The bout between the pair will be contested at a catchweight of 120 lbs., where Fujii normally competes at the 115 lb. mark.

Strikeforce Challengers IX, July 23, from the Comcast Arena in Everett, Wash according to mmajunkie.com:

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said that Strikeforce Challengers 9 could feature recently crowned Strikeforce women's welterweight champion Sarah Kaufman (11-0) against fellow 135-pounder Roxanne Modafferi (15-5).

Coker said the fight is not official but that executives are working to secure it for the upcoming show.

Why does Bellator have a gimmie fight for "arguably the best p4p" in women's mma?

I have to admit women’s mma doesn’t intrigue me much to begin with.

But honestly if they want to pull viewers, why do they match up the best in women’s mma against someone who appears to be a MMA journeyman at 4-4.

Not to mention that the 4 losses, were all recent, having lost 4 of her last 5.

I think it's because this just got thrown together

Couple that with a lack of depth in women’s MMA, and I’m personally just happy to see Megumi fighting in the US.

Fujii has been fighting lesser competition than Schneider in Japan for years, so this actually isn’t a terrible match.

Also, Bjorn Rebney told me last month that this is just a fight to get Fujii some TV time before she enters the 115-lb. tourney next season.

1) What everyone else said. Schneider is better than her record and this match was hastily thrown together to give Fujii some exposure pre-tournament.

2) Schneider is naturally a whole weight class heavier than Fujii.

Schneider is far from a journeywoman

Her 4 losses came against Tonya Evinger (Top 10 at the time),Jenn Tate (Top 10),Sarah Kaufman (#1 at 135) and Adrienna Jenkins (former Top 10)

All while she was undersized.
Not to mention that she’s a short notice replacement.

The Kaufman/Modafferi fight should be awesome.

WAR ROXY!!!

She’s far from the favorite here but I have a feeling she’ll be a lot less tentative than Hashi was, and should bring the fight to Kaufmann. Everyone underestimated her against Larosa so I’m hoping she can pull off the same upset here.

And unlike the Larosa fight she won't be fighting 5lbs. under her preferred weight.

I look forward to seeing that grin-to-superman punch again.

Kaufmann vs modafferi should get a spot on a bigger card then a challegers fight

Putting the Champ on back to back challengers cards is kind of insulting. The up side though is the card is virtually in Sarah’s back yard. If they plan to put that ladies 135 tournament on that card as well I will feel a lot better about it. Should be a really good fight. I really like both fighters but Sarah is the local girl so …

WAR Sarah!!!!

Cyborg would have to lose a bunch of weight or Fuji would get really fat....

and even then it would still be a bit crazy.

Fuji’s smaller than Akano.

I want to see Fujii fight Cyborg

Do you hate Megumi Fujii or something?

by Chris Nelson on Jun 6, 2010 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I think people just don’t realize how big of a size disparity there is there.

Yeah!

That’d be like Brock fighting Randy – who would even sanction a bout like that?!?

Perfect, the female Wanderlei Silva fighting an undersized Asian opponent. So long as it ends with Fujii getting stomped in the face, I’m all for it.

Remember what happened when Cyborg fought Akano? Fujii is two weight classes lighter than “Girlfight Monster” is. It’d be like putting Cerrone in the cage against The Axe Murderer.

Challengers?

Why is the first title defense going to be on the show for up-and-comers that no one sees? Do they not want to promote the women’s titles anymore? I thought exposure = promotion?

by asa on Jun 6, 2010 10:23 PM EDT reply actions

It should be obvious by now that they use the main event slot of the Challengers cards as a platform to promote some of their main stars, and hopefully draw in some fans who might not be enticed by an all-prospects event.

As for Kaufman, I’d say they’re promoting her about as much as a 135lb women’s MMA fighter could hope. The main event of a B card on Showtime is pretty damn good considering Kaufman isn’t exactly a household name. If they put her on the undercard of a bigger Strikeforce show, people will just whine about how a title fight is being relegated to second banana status. And if they put her in the main event of one of the big ones, people will just complain about how they aren’t interested in small time women’s fights on supposedly major events.

Kaufman isn’t exactly a household name.

Isn’t that why you give her more exposure if you want to put either her or the title over?

The rest of your answer is just depressing. I need more coffee.

It’s really nice to see Modafferi get more fights so soon. If Roxy-Kaufman is half as good as Roxy-LaRosa was, we’ll have another classic in our hands.

Plus, Roxanne is cute ;)
