Maybe the huge weight cut detriments his grappling ability?

Its guys like Rumble that make me rethink the whole weight cutting BS about MMA.
Heres a LEGIT 205 pounder fighting at Welterweight! He wouldn’t even be a small Light Heavyweight. He’d be bigger than Rashad for sure. Cutting so much weight and outweighing your opponent by 20-30 pounds on fight day is cheating in my books.
We need same day weigh ins in MMA to counter this.

No, we don’t; there’s a whole other host of problems associated with that.
Rumble isn’t exemplary of anything; he’s an anomaly. Most fighters who tried to cut the weight that he cuts would simply be unable to function or would just have no chance of getting there; look at when Irvin tried to drop to 185 as just one of many examples. The fact that Rumble CAN cut that far and still function at a high level is almost impossible to believe. But sooner or later he’s going to have to face the facts that he’s going to miss weight more and more often; young guys take weight off easier and naturally carry less weight, but as he’s getting older (not to say he’s OLD, but just aging naturally), Rumble is going to start – and some would say has already started – having trouble making 170. He’ll either bite the bullet and move up in the near future, or miss weight again and incur the wrath of Dana.

the long term effects
of this kind of extreme yo-yo weight fluctuation can’t be good either. Not as bad as getting hit in the head a lot, but still, any changes that can be made to protect fighters’ health are probably a good thing.

That’s true, but it’s also Rumble’s choice and, conceptually speaking, hard to disassociate from the many other aspects of MMA fighting and training which probably have a deleterious long-term effect and which are left to the best judgement of fighters, coaches and managers. If Rumble wants to have a long career and a comfortable retirement, it probably is in best interests to fight at a higher weight, but since that involves a certain amount of “probably” and “could be”, he has to make the call on that.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
oh yeah
I’m not really talking about extra regulations, just better sense, more long term thinking and smarter choices on the part of those participating.

Same say weigh ins would result in fighters fighting dehydrated, suffering more severe concussions, and dying.
If you can make the weight, you can fight in the weight class. That’s the way the rule works.
Keep Firing, Assholes!
Have you accepted BROCKLESNARRRRRR!!!!!!! as your personal Heavyweight Champion?
Virtually all champs & top contenders do this
Aside from a handful of mid-range HWs, almost all top UFC and SF fighters do this. Exceptions include all of the Japanese I know of (this is largely why they fare so poorly in the UFC), Machida (who could easily make MW), Evans (he does only a little, and would be a better fit at MW), and Edgar. There are others, but not nearly as many as you may imagine.
In addition, there are those who don’t really need to cut weight in the wrestling sense of the term, but who mostly just get out of shape and/or gain fat between fights. Guys like BJ, Rampage, Liddell, and the like (mostly old-school guys).
The majority of the top fighters at WW and above, including almost all who come from wrestling backgrounds, enter the ring anywhere from 10-30+ pounds heavier than they weighed in. For example, on fight night, GSP, Alves, Fitch and Kos are all generally between 182-190.
by BigDNotDallas on Jun 5, 2010 1:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Imagine...
Machida and Anderson simply swap weight classes. No issue with fighting each other and we get a whole slew of new fight combinations to get excited about.
Think of the epic shit-talkery that would eminate from Chael’s mouth for an up coming fight with Machida…wow!
Dude. It's Anderson Silva.
If he gives a damn he will end Sonnen’s night by either sub or KO.

By Monday morning Chael Sonnen will be pissing out of his neck.

You called it...
You are exactly right, and I agree entirely. Machida doesn’t cut weight to speak of (remember he fought Rua at 202 the first time), and Anderson walks around at 230ish between fights.
Rashad would probably be better served at 185 as well, and he would be a top-3 from then on out, particularly once Anderson moves on.
As you know, MMA at its highest levels is all about styles and match-ups…

Good idea in theory, but...
There was a state (Missouri I think) who had a rule that fighters couldn’t be more than 10 pounds heavier at pre-fight weigh-in than they were at official weigh-in.
Seemed like a sound idea, but without across-the-board change at the AC level, there was too much opposition by almost everyone involved…
by BigDNotDallas on Jun 5, 2010 1:36 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
And big time events would simply not put on shows in Missouri then...
so that their big name fighters didn’t have to deal with that shit.

before all her facial surgery she wasn’t bad… maybe a bit of a smut, but she never looked as bad as she does now.
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
Bit of a smut is a severe understatement.
But compare this circa 1996 photo

with a recent one

Even if you don’t think she looked pretty back in the day, you can’t deny that she looks much worse now.

I don't want to tell any fighter what to do with his career
Its his career and its his life. He’s a grown man, he has every right to decide for himself. That being said, holy shit man. If I was him I’d seriously consider moving up.
"I am a man who pisses largely and frequently, which they say is a sign of great mental activity" -Henry Miller-
I saw him recently and talked to him
I could not believe it. He said he weighed 242 and he still looked cut and trim. He will not see 170 again without visiting death or the hospital. In fact, has anyone gone from 242 to 185?
Forrest goes from 240 to 205, and he’s considered the biggest LHW.

Not exactly
Rampage came into camp 8 weeks before his fight at 250. Anderson walks around in the 230-235 range before losing fat and cutting water weight.
by BigDNotDallas on Jun 5, 2010 3:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Yes but I saw him and he didn't look like water weight or fat at all
He was wearing a tight T-shirt and he had rock hard abs. How much can he really cut?
And thats the rub
The guys who are cutting weight (water, strictly to make weight) as opposed to “getting in shape” by losing excess body fat.
WWs like GSP, Kos, Fitch and the like go through a process starting many days before weigh-in of systematic dehydration and carb intake modifications to make weight, followed by an intense rehydration and something akin to carb loading to get back to almost their original weight.
by BigDNotDallas on Jun 5, 2010 5:43 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Rampage was 250 after 14 month lay off. I doubt that it’s his regular weight, since everybody was like “wow, 250!”. Grifin’s regular weight is 240.
Anderson doesn’t walk around 235, but 220, fat 220 that is. He was 185 before when entering the plane to Abu Dhabi. With Leites he was 182 at the weigh ins. Even at LHW he was under 210 lbs.

Rumble is huge, rashad said once on MMA live that Rumble was much bigger than himself.
If he keeps cutting theese amounts, he’s going to have a very short carreer.
Rashad doesn't cut much
Rashad is more naturally a MW. He makes a very minimal weight cut and, with a little more body fat loss, he could make weight at 185 with only a minimal cut.
by BigDNotDallas on Jun 5, 2010 5:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I just don’t understand what he’s gaining by cutting so much and staying in the welterweight division? He’d probably make more money at Middle, he’d be a terrifying mix of speed and power, he’d still be big enough to never worry about being manhandled by someone bigger, and he wouldn’t have to put his body through so much abuse through weight cutting.
Not only that but he’s shown a bit of a weakness to high level grapplers, and we all know how those types do against GSP. Move up to MW dude, there are all sorts of dudes waiting to get their lights punched out by you up there.
EXACTLY
He has no real shot at WW, a division that, along with HW, looks to be dominated by wrestlers for the forseeable future. Rumble has essentially no chance against GSP, Fitch or Kos, and little chance against many others who will out-wrestle or out-grapple him.
At MW, Sonnen is the only dominant wrestler, and even his functional (MMA-centric) wrestling is not as good as the top WWs.

Hadn’t thought about that till now, but the fact that people aren’t jumping to this conclusion the way they do with Overeem is odd, to say the least.

He could without any trouble
I used to be MW & LHW and standing next to him I felt like a 155er.
I never realized how huge he was until I saw him next to Maia and Bones

That’s a huge bitch!
Did he eat Ricky Hatton?
