Alistair Overeem Won't Fight Ricco Rodriguez, May Leave DREAM
From MMA Junkie:
Alistair Overeem (33-11 MMA, 3-0 DREAM) will not fight Ricco Rodriguez (42-11 MMA, 0-0 DREAM) at DREAM.15 - and he may not fight in the promotion ever again, according to his representative.
Martin De Jong, who trains the Strikeforce heavyweight champion, said his camp will talk to DREAM representatives at the end of this week to determine Overeem's future in the Japanese promotion.
"Right now, I can just say he's not going to fight Ricco, and he's not sure if he's going to fight in DREAM," De Jong today told MMAjunkie.com.
Dave Walsh from Head Kick Legend comments:
While nothing is said explicitly, after the issues that Nick Diaz, Giorgio Petrosyan and others have had with getting paid by FEG for appearances, it would not surprise me if DREAM owed Overeem some serious money. This of course comes after there being serious rumors circulating about DREAM being in peril. Stay tuned to this one.

you guys are pretty quick to write off a not bad fighter
Ricco has seen better days, but he’s seen far far worse ones. It appears he’s kicked most of the really bad habits that dogged his personal life for years. He’d have very small odds of beating Overeem but he’d have some chance.

But isn’t he basically a 205’er now? It’s just silly to stick him in a ring with a guy who probably cuts to 265 and could put his knee through an elephant.
IMO, this fight was wrong, regardless of Ricco’s legitimacy.
Reem was 253 for Rogers, but you make a good point.

Nothing against Ricco
But people want Overeem fighting top 5 opponents and getting up further. Outside of the UFC the only fighters I see improving his ranking are Fedor and Barnett.

I dont think it was because of Ricco… I think it had more to do with overeem flying to japan because they told him he’d have an opponent when they didnt and then after he flew out they say they got one… I guess he’s not flying back.

I hope he either goes to K-1 full time, to carry the MMA flag, or goes to the UFC. His only big money fight in SF blew the hell up last Saturday, so he may be lookig to jump ship.

He was looking to jump ship from the get go… unfortunately his plan was to be the 1st to beat Fedor so he could ask for a shit load of money.
After looking into it, I have to agree with Kid Nate.
Ricco is looking much better than he has in years. Down to 218 for the 2009 ADCC, losing a professional boxing match via split decision in July of ’08.

You know overeem has innovated something in MMA which no other fighter does…
He uses his foot work and striking defense to transition into these sick throws. I saw it in K1 but it didnt mean much because those guys arent built for grappling… but the moment he flung rogers accross the cage I thought shit he’s got something here.
Kid Nate should do a judo chop on it.

That wasn’t a “sick throw.” That was a big wad of muscle shoving a Rogers who was bouncing around on “happy feet” because he was too scared to sit down on his punches and commit.
Rogers is for sure still butthurt.
His ass bounced off the floor like they were in a moon bounce.
why this is important is because while everyone is training standard wrestling takedown defense, and even judo fighters will have to evolve to stay ahead of the curve and Machida’s and overeems innovations in the sport are great examples of that.
I absolutely agree with that
Muay Thai trips are underutilized in MMA, this right here is proof.
Head Kick Legend
Twitter @HeadKickLegend
That’s not a trip. There isn’t even contact between Ube’s right leg and Brett’s planted foot. Brett’s weight just gets planted on one leg for a moment and Uber hurls him in the same direction. This is all strength.
Seriously guys, this is just the big kid flinging the little kid around the playground by his shirt collar.
Here's a better angle

Overeem’s knee blocks Rogers left leg (knee). Strength is required though.

no that was technique, something tells me u r not quite the judo nerd, i wish i knew the name of the trip, i train bjj so i dont know the names of the takedowns
http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/kosogari.gif
i believe it was a slightly improvised kosoto gari
kosoto gari is a timing technique, where you wait for the moment the opponent is about to commit his weight down on the stepping foot, and you sweep it out just before. a child could do it—there is no strength necessary.
i’m trying to tell you guys—that toss uber used is 90% strength. the only thing resembling technique is the way he jammed his knee against Rogers’ leg. If he wasn’t so freaking strong, he wouldn’t have thrown Rogers that way.
Watch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG4_25eQMP4
It’s a very light sweep, all in the hips and speed of your footwork. All about timing. Uber’s shit was brute force and entirely upper body action.
i train bjj so i dont know the names of the takedowns
this is something i don’t understand. why BJJ schools don’t seem to work on takedowns at all. i mean, how are you gonna work your positions if you can’t get the match where you want it?
i used to wrestle, hadn’t done it for a few years, so i got bored and joined a BJJ gym. i’ve been hurling guys straight onto their backs into side control for 3 weeks now, that is when we actually get the rare chance to start from standing.
It seems like every class, the instructor says we’re gonna work a couple submission variations and then a takedown, but we never get to the takedown part.
There are guys who have way more BJJ eperience than me who i consistenly get the better of because i’m able to gain top control nearly every time i start from standing. why do BJJ guys seem to avoid learning wrestling?

In BJJ (in which I also have a blue belt, from Gracie Barra) it’s common to just clinch up and post on a leg and drag the dude down. Hit the mat by any means necessary. We use to block the knee and break posture to counter a standing guillotine, and even then it was a drag-down.
You won’t see this shit in Judo — what the hell are YOU talking about? You would see Osoto Gari, Kosoto Gari or Kosoto Gake, and none of them involve buckling the opponents knee. The idea is to put the man on his back with minimum effort, not toss him in a random direction using everything you’ve got.
Now that Dana has verbally raped and pillaged Ubereems Chaaracter publicly saying he sucks an how Chuck Ko’d him at 205 6yrs ago, crappy HW blah blaah blah, I highly doubt we See Alistair anytime soon in the UFC. I imagine AO an Golden Glory dont take to being disrespected and can see them actually repling to what Dana said. Dude is as classless as they come(Dana) Also I hope Dream doesnt fold, as its pretty much the Best MMA org in Japan, unless DEEP can pickup the pieces and contracts, which I cant afford to, MMA in the East will be dead :( Sucks as they put on some pretty sweet shows.
How do you Know where Im at? If you dont Know where Ive been...Understand where Im coming from??
Is that why
Dana invited Overeem to a UFC event like a year ago and hung out with him the whole time? Dana only talks shit to damage Strikeforce, not Overeem. I’m pretty sure he talked shit about Shields before too and now that his contract is over, Dana is more than ready to sign him. He didn’t even let Shields be shown on TUF, I swear he was on the screen for like 30 seconds the entire season.
