That is a seriously well rounded card

I must see at least three of those undercard fights.

Spike has to have a prelims special for this

Hazelett/Story and Silva/Boetsch.

No doubt about that.

But Story won me over after the Brian Foster fight. Story would probably own Hazelett trading punches, but if it goes to the ground it could be really intriguing.

I am amazed Silva has fallen so far down the card.

He is an exciting fighter and has only lost to two elite LHW fighters / former champs.

Plus his loss to Evans was far from lopsided. That fight could have reasonably been scored a draw. If he fared that well with a hurt back he deserves to be a main card fighter.

by truck on Jun 4, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s due to his opponent, and the strength of the other matchups.

There’s no way you could justify Thiago Silva’s fight being above Fitch-Alves on the card. And Hughes-Almeida has the legendary former champ vs. a guy on a win streak. JDS is ranked at least as high as Thiago Silva at his respective weight class. I don’t think it’s disrespect to Silva in this case.

by Hardcharger on Jun 4, 2010 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

What about

Rafael dos Anjos vs. Clay Guida

I just see T Silva as a main card fighter. IF this card is too stacked they should have used him on a weaker card like UFC 115…

by truck on Jun 4, 2010 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

UFC 115 is 2 months earlier. That’s a big difference. Scheduling isn’t always easy.

If Silva wanted to wait for Bader to come back from injury, he could’ve, and would’ve been on the main card. He’ll still be on TV.

by Hardcharger on Jun 4, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Guida and dos Anjos are both coming off decisive wins

Silva’s coming off a decision loss, and Boetsch is just returning to the UFC after being demoted to the minor leagues. Guida’s also more of a fan-favorite than Silva, so it makes perfect sense to have him and dos Anjos on the main card.

As long as Silva-Boetsch ends up on the Spike prelims (if they do a prelims special for this card), he’ll still be getting plenty of exposure.

Key word in that post: HILARIOUS

Because he has no business in the cage with Cigano. Hear me out.

Dos Santos is a freak, Roy is pudgy (he may be deceptively strong but even that wouldnt compare to Cigano).

Roy’s strength = grappling. Cigano trains with Black house… and is a freak.

You’re highly overestimating training with Black House as a measurement of ground ability

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

by Day Man on Jun 4, 2010 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Dos Santos ground game is entirely based on getting back up. Even Gonzaga couldn’t get a grip on his ass.

by judonerd on Jun 4, 2010 2:08 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

How do we know this? Based on one takedown attempt where JDS got away from Gonzaga? (a guy he definitely didn’t want to go to the ground with)

Seems like an awful lot of inferences both in the strength of his ground game and its effectiveness.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

by Day Man on Jun 4, 2010 2:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not looking at a piece of paper that says “one takedown, unsuccessful”.

I’m looking at the actual fight, and the insane explosion of technique and power he displayed. His escape was very high level and scary.

Besides, this isn’t BRKLSNR, it’s Fat Boy Roy. His takedowns are mostly from the clinch.

by judonerd on Jun 4, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

After seeing Duffee get KOed by Russow, one can make the same argument that you did: Russow’s strength = grappling/Duffee is a freak. Yet that didn’t stop Duffee from getting KOed.

by chrisbboy82 on Jun 4, 2010 4:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Cigano has more than just physical gifts

JDS isn’t just a physical freak learning how to fight MMA, he’s an experienced guy, top contender, and probably the best striker in the HW division. Add to that a camp with serious BJJ chops, and the fact that nobody has been able to put him down for long, and I think Roy is in for a long night…or rather a short one.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Fitch will probably win by LnP. My only hope is Pitbull will train nothing but the ground game for the next 2 months. If he can neutralize Fitch on the ground then Captain Decision will have no chance.

Silva!

Anderson, that is…Tim Boetsch hasn’t impressed since he Jeet Kun Do’d David Heath so I am interested in him with Thiago Silva, a good striker who’s down to bang.

Why is Matt Hughes still fighting? Doesn’t he pick his own fights? He should win by Ass-holi-ness GNP.

Not sure what to think about Dos Santos/Nelson…if Nelson can get JDS down, he can put that very effective fat-ass crucifix on him. I’m sure getting KO’d by Arlovski taught Nelson a lesson about strikers.

Not impressed with Fitch…LnP is his game for sure and Alves has no answer for that.

Don Anjos by submission…Saunders, Hazmat, Hendricks and Nedkov…

Also, Dana White wins by WWDFWD!

Also, please take a look at Chael’s face now…as it will look completely different after the fight. He might not make it to the General Election.

I live in SF right across the bay bridge from Oakland

I have never been to a ufc event, and I don’t know anyone here who would be interested in going enough to spend money on a ticket….so…..anyone on here planning on going and wouldn’t mind meeting up with me there so that I’m not totally by myself?

this is about to sound like I’m trying to pick up a date but gear with me, I’m figuring if anyone would be willing to watch a ufc event with a total stranger they should know a bit about me. I’m 27, the first mma event I ever saw was ufc 34, I am extremely passionate about mma and it is the only sport that I follow and can intelligently discuss. I am knowledgable enough to engage in all the mma talk anyone can handle, and while my opinions may differ, I’m not one of those elitist asspipes that think that any opinion different from my own is idiotic as I see so much in the comments section of fanposts…which is why I stopped commenting all together aside from this here.

so if anyone will be in oakland for this event and wouldn’t mind some extra company, let me know here cause I REALLY want to see my first live event but watching it alone would be a last resort. I’m 420 friendly, I mean come on, I live in SF and can bring whatever pre-ufc goodies we may require.

Dude, I just wanna say, having been to my first live UFC event a couple weeks ago (114), you’ll have an amazing time no matter what. I went with a 5 friends (one of which lives in Vegas/wife works for the UFC) and I was so excited I basically left them and made my way right to where the fighters walk out, and sat there for most of the event. I met Joe Silva, GSP, Florian, Mickey Rourke, Alan Belcher, and Dana White (briefly).

I’d totally go but I’m on the east coast.

There's a chance I'll be there.

Might be getting comped tickets via work connections, so we’ll see. I won’t be able to sit with you, but might get to meet a fellow BE member and have a beer beforehand?

I’d strongly suggest going if you live that close. I’ve been to several events and even mediocre cards on TV are great live. The atmosphere is wonderful, the Baba O’rielly hype video is awesome (I’m a total mark for it), and it’s always a cool experience. You won’t regret going, and if you have to do it alone, you’ll become friends with people near you. UFC crowds tend to be pretty friendly guys, the douchebags are more rare than you’d expect.

I imagine the energy and atmosphere is out of control. I’ve been to a rage against the machine concert so I know how strong the energy can get and how it charges up the crowd like mad and I can’t wait to see what it’s like live and in person. Goddamn I’m getting excited now!

thank you everyone for the responses and info and personal experiences, I appreciate it!

anyone got some good stories from ufc events to share? That’d be fun.

I've seen Rage live too.

Got way out of hand. We, meaning the entire audience, literally tore the venue apart. I ripped a gate down and dropped it on my ankle, didn’t realize I took a chunk of skin with it until well after the set ended. Awesome show. When did you see them?

As for events… I’ve got stories out the ass. Like I said, I generally get my tickets through work, so I’m often sitting with trainers/family members of guys on the card. The tension when you watch with those guys is incredible, and you get way invested in the fights. Beats the hell out of sitting in your living room.

what is the suite exactly? How do you watch the fights from it and what is your line of site to the cage? I imagine a suite must be pretty damn sweet. (see what I did there? I do know a bunch of girls, but like I said above it’d be hard enoug to find one to pay for the cheap tickets at the event than 155, but I’ll definitely put it out there and see if anyone would be interested. Either way that sounds pretty awesome so I’d definitely like to know more

probably I'm broke right now!

that is such a hard question because the card is so stacked….if this was 2 years ago I’d say silva bar none…but who even knows which silva will show up anymore. Man he really screwed himself over with the fans….badly. And it’s everybodys loss, not just his own. Anyways…im really lookin forward to JDS taking another step up the HW food chain. Guida is exciting as hell. Fitch fighting a guy like alvez should be smother proof and a standing war I’m hopin and prayin. And I’m curious to see what hughes has got left in the tank against a guy making huge strides toward relevency which is always fun to see. He has been improving lately it would appear. I mean every main card fight has an angle I’m pumped about. God I’m loving chael’s trash talk and that has me so pumped for that figt so I guess I’m going to have to settle on the main event…now hear me out…it was reported that AS approached sonnen at the expo and told him to lay off the talk, so clearly AS is pissed and will logically lay a smackdown on chael like the building is on fire….ya that doesn’t make sense but it’s cool. Although…one of silvas 56234 excuses for his maia performance was that he was disrespected by him…well if that’s silvas reaction to maia’s trash talk, which ammounted to praise in my opinion, then holy shit what is AS going to do with chael. Prance around like a fairy and dance for 5 rounds instead of 2 or 3? We will see, we will see….for better or worse, we are going to find out.

by Opposites Attack on Jun 5, 2010 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Unless Silva is completely insane (which he could be) I doubt he would commit career suicide. I think Sonnen will force Silva to engage. The trash talk always adds another layer of interest to it. I’d love to see Silva tear him apart. It should be a good fight.

I am pumped about the Dos Santos/Nelson fight, I really hope it makes this card. Its a great test for Dos Santos.

And Clay Guida always seems to get the crowd excited. I enjoy watching the dude fight.

So yea, great card. We should keep in touch, I wanna be there.

I’m really looking forward to Nelson-Dos Santos fight, I’d be really bummed if that wasn’t on the card. But they need a heavyweight fight right?

I’m in awe. Every fight is going to be insane. Amazing how the pendulem swings from 115 to 117.

fitch is going to get knocked out, he’s under alot pressure to finish fights, i think he’s going make some mistakes in this fight..

What pressure is he under to finish fights? If he wins this fight hes got the next title shot.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

I thought Hughes was only fighting other legends at this point? What does he have to gain by beating Ricardo Almeida? Does Hughes just want to fight anyone even remotely connected to the Gracie family?

UFC positioning potential title contenders. Either Hughes wins and is right back in the title shot hunt or Big Dog gains a lot of credibility and can main event a fight night or co-main event against a big name WW.

I’m calling it
Thiago Silva (14-2) vs. Tim Boetsch (11-3) will be fight of the night.
