But it tied it looks like it had or at least was very close to the highest gate they’ve had (Shamrock vs Le did over a $1 million as well)

It wasn’t bad numbers (and a pretty darn good gate) but the big thing here is that it didn’t beat Gina Carano’s card which is what they were looking for and it didn’t come anywhere near the Shamrock vs Gracie number from 2006.
It’s hard to say. I heard from friends attending that ticket prices were higher than previous Strikeforce fights at the Shank Tard. Might have drove away a lot of locals who where used to cheap seats. I think the Showtime numbers will be the key factor if we can call it a success or not.

Agree, it’s the Showtime number that is most important here (rec for referencing the Shank Tard :D )
Trying to find the interview where Coker was talking about ticket sales for this event??
Here it is
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker claimed that ticket sales for Saturday’s show are ahead of the pace of last summer’s Gina Carano vs. Cris “Cyborg” Santos fight in the same building (which drew 13,976 fans) and are on par with the 2006 Frank Shamrock vs. Cesar Gracie fight (which drew a then-MMA record in North America with a sellout 18,265 fans). He threw a knock in at UFC president Dana White, without mentioning him by name, since White claimed they had only sold 4,000 tickets for the show.

Well he did prove Dana wrong but it seems that his ticket sell claims didn’t come anywhere close to what he was saying either.

This what he said a week before the fight:
"I think we are over the 10,000 mark now. I think we’ll have a packed house. We have a great fan base here and I think we’ll have a full house. Now that MMA is mainstream we have a big area in the Bay Area to pull from. I think people will be coming from all over. L.A. and the Central Valley. Cung Le will make a difference. He’s a great fighter and has a great presence here. My goal is always to sell out but HP holds 18,265 so that is our goal, but anything over 15,000 is respectable."http://www.mma-zone.com/2010/fedor-werdum-conference-call-highlights/
so this wasn’t “respectable” then…
The problem is doing a 1m gate with the supposed GOAT is not good enough and clearly shows they had no business signing Fedor.
You mean....
500K gate and that’s before expenses.

According to Coker only 11,000 wouldn’t be respectable, which is why I posted it in reply to who me’s comments.
But we should also note this may only be the paid attendance and might not be including comped.

It seems that Coker was expecting quite a bit more people than what they got to show up. Talk was that Fedor was drawing in people from all over the country but he did less in attendance than Gina did and didn’t even come close to 15000. Still the most important number will be what the Showtime rating turns out to be.
Show averaged 500,000 viewers and peaked around 700,000 for the main event according to mmajunkie. Pretty solid numbers for Showtime.
by VirtualBalboa on Jun 29, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s a really good number but the average didn’t beat what Gina Carano did (or Hershal Walker). While that might not make M-1 Global happy I’m sure it was good news for Showtime. I wonder how the peak for the Fedor fight compares to the peak for the Gina Carano fight?
While Showtime executives do not traditionally release ratings figures, early estimates for this past weekend’s historic “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum” co-promoted event put the average Showtime viewership at approximately 550,000 viewers when including DVR and on-demand figures.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from industry sources that Showtime experienced a ratings jump of 56 percent for the show against May’s “Strikeforce: St. Louis” event.
As is typical for mixed martial arts broadcasts, the viewership increased throughout the broadcast, and the ratings peaked during the main event between Fedor Emelianenko and Fabricio Werdum with a 2.1 household rating and more than 700,000 viewers.
The sources also indicated that Showtime executives are pleased with the results and that “Fedor vs. Werdum” now ranks as the third-highest-rated Strikeforce card in Showtime’s history behind the August 2009 “Carano vs. Cyborg” event and January’s “Strikeforce: Miami.”
It was actually
The “Shank Tark”.

That reminds me
I was gonna make a fanpost about the TRUE biggest loser on Saturday…Gus Johnson. Maybe I’ll write it tomorrow.

Like that’s the only day of the week Gus Johnson is the biggest loser.

I rewound the broadcast to make shure I'd heard that right.
Shank Tark. Good job, Gus.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

Something about Cung Le's last 3 payouts
vs Scott Smith at Fedor vs Werdum – $100,000
vs Scott Smith at Strikeforce: Evolution – $150,000
vs Frank Shamrock – $200,000
Either he took a paycut to fight Scott Smith again or he is one of the few fighters that signed a contract where the pay was more heavily weighted towards the first fights. Strange.
I have no real evidence to support this but I just always thought that Strikeforce was getting creative with the numbers that get released as their payouts. Because sometimes you will notice inconsistencies with their payouts. Sometimes they will list fighters win bonuses and other times they won’t. Even in this case with Cung Le a decreasing salary seems very inconsistent and odd.
Again just my thoughts with no real evidence to support it. The reason I think they get creative with the payout numbers that get released is so that the payouts aren’t so close to the gate. Having the payouts and gate so close might inspire a few more articles about Strikeforce’s viability and that wouldn’t be good for them.
Just BE.
I'm guessing
A front-weighted contract with signing bonus

Holy crap, Coker really
rapes ALL of the fighters on the under card. Can’t believe such a wonderful guy like him would not pay these guys enough to feed their families. I hope at least the have doctors on hand now that can give people stitches after their fights.
Fedors pay was almost 50% of the gate. Great business model.
