Repeatedly getting viciously knocked out is not good for your health, Chuck.

I hope he does the right thing.

That’s true, but I was watching Pride Total Elimination 03 the other day and he seems noticably more articulate in the pre-fight interview. I mean, people’s way of talking changes with age. My dad is a little less articulate now, but he’s over 60, Chuck is 40.

Not to take any thing away from Shogun

But I attribute that to Chucks failing chin more so than to any abilities on Shoguns part.

Look at his knees completely buckle from an ‘pawing’ over extended jab.

This is an especially telling GIF

Because it shows that this was a genuinely, poorly placed punch by Franklin. No rotation of the torso, no extension of the hip, maybe 3 inches of rotation from the shoulder. Plus, the you can see near the end that his fist lands at a sideways angle, and could not possibly be real hard because it is relying on the support of the wrist joint and ligaments to hold the force instead of the bones of the arm(as it would be at the proper end of your fist). In reality, this punch should not have even dropped a Tyson Griffin or say Matt Serra kind of fighter, Maybe sting them and make them back up or put their hands up. Yet all of Chucks bodily functions cease, as if a cougar bit into his spine at the base of the neck. This is a clear indication of cranial subjugation. Unfortunately, doctors at this high level of profiteering, do and say what the Promoters and Fighters want them to say.

by SimplePsych on Jun 28, 2010 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I totaly agree- you can never be 100% sure the fact remainis I was not the one who got hit buy that shot but it did not look like it should of caused any where near the damage it did. The punch to me looks like it was almost all arm power alone and when it did hit it was a glancing impact. And 2nd its Rich Franklin a fighter who has never been known to have great power. probably Franklins rating would be below average power for 205. The bottom line like you said is Chucks Brain can not take any sort of trama at all. His lights shut off so dam easy and that = Danger

by Shocbomb on Jun 29, 2010 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

The Franklin/Liddell gif is 100% proof he can’t take anymore punishment and that Shogun knockdown was with very little hip movement and extended far out and Chucks body went limp instantly. I really hope no athletic commission is willing to license him, he really is refusing to hang it up. Poor guy. Let the ego go and accept that you were top of the food chain at one point in UFC history. There is plenty of success to be had in training up and coming fighters. Court McGee looks very promising with Chuck in his corner.

by outcircuit on Jun 29, 2010 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Fedor and Igor landed a lot of those ridge hand type strikes, and Franklin’s is kind of similar. That right hand may have looked technically awful, but it was so accurately placed on Chuck’s chin that I’m not sure anyone with that kind of forward momentum could have taken that punch.

If anything it’s the Shogun KO that’s truly telling. It’s a looping arm punch that lands on his cheek/orbital area yet it completely buckles him. Compare to this to the absolute bombs Quinton landed on him in their Pride match and it’s like night and day. The first Quinton fight more than anything was what truly demonstrated this man had a monster chin in his heyday. I’m pretty sure the punch that Mezger dropped him with would have put him into a coma now.

Does anyone else think he very possibly gets KO’ed by Ortiz? Tito’s striking may be shit, but Chuck’s chin is so absolutely done I can’t help but think it’s a real possibility.

by David Castillo on Jun 29, 2010 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

David yes I have thought exactly that if the 3rd Tito fight happens. If that fight doea take place I would still pick Chuck to win but it would not surprise me one bit if Tito landed something and Ko’ed him eather. Chucks Chin well I should say his brain. Becasue its his brain that turns off now with punches that would not even faze him a few years ago. The more damage a fighter takes the easier it is is for the brain to shut off AKA get Ko’ed in ones career.

by Shocbomb on Jun 29, 2010 3:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure

How badly placed that punch was. He hit Chuck right on the button as he was coming in – that’s a lot of momentum in Rich’s favor, meaning that the punch doesn’t have to be very hard to be effective. It was a hard strike at the point of contact, and I think a lot of people would have been dropped (if not KO’d) by that one.

That said, Chuck is done, and should retire for his own health.

Cranial Subluxation...

is the word you’re looking for. also possible Cranial Fixation. Those are possible factors in Chuck no longer being able to take punishment. However, I find it hard to believe even with much profit at stake that he’d be allowed to fight with a subluxation. That involves fusing of the cranial plates to the degree that there is constant nerve pressure and can be potentially fatal in the face of trauma.

Cranial fixations are not as serious, but do still result in the skull having less ‘give’ upon being smacked into by a brain. The thing is , by the time someone has developed a trauma (not genetic) induced cranial fixation, they’ve likely received enough blows to the head that the brain itself is more sensitive

sorry i'll explain

when first poster said ‘cranial subluxation’ i didn’t mind b/c his point (chuck should stop fighting) was dead on. but then b86 tried to correct him, but frankly those words have nothing to do with this and studying anatomy doesn’t tell you much of the mechanisms of traumatic brain injury. if you think otherwise, then tell me what those terms actually mean.

he has a mild form of diffuse axonal injury, axons being the wiring in the brain.

i just didn’t want to write all this out and sound like a smart ass, but it bugged me enough that i had to say something. :)

first poster said “subjugation” which isn’t anything at all. i tried correcting him with what i thought was the right word. you could have just re-corrected me. I’m not under the illusion that anything i hear from a college professor is gospel.

I don’t have to write out definitions for you, i know what the words i used mean. however, you are right in that I don’t have a real expertise with which to use them, so saying, “hey man, i think you’re wrong, here’s whats right and here’s a link” would have worked fine

I think that’s the point Chuck is trying to get across.

I think he’s saying that he realizes Dana could still make money off of him if he were so inclined, and the fact that he’s willing to sacrifice making money for Chuck’s health really illustrates the gravity of the situation.

by mmatokyo on Jun 28, 2010 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

This to me is worse than Pulver refusing to retire because

A.) Pulver keeps getting submitted, with the one KO loss to Garcia. He’s a completely different fighter than Chuck and has done enough to keep his brain in-tact.

B.) Liddell has been losing the way Pulver hasn’t…by KTFO. If he continues to do this he’ll end up talking like Meldrick Taylor. He has to go out now.

With Jens it's about his pride

And I fear for his mentality if he continues to lose in small shows. It’s not always about having brain damage. We’re seeing LT go through the same sort of denial in the NFL, and he’s probably going to end up humiliating himself out of the league. It’s no way to go out for any of these guys.

No

No he can’t. And he was a serious jerk for calling out his O-line for his lack of production the last two years. Multiple scouts have anonymously stated that when watching footage of him from last season, he’s lost several steps and that his knees are no good. On top of that, I read quotes today where he suggests that he’s competing for the starting job with Shonn Green. That’s delusional. I’m not saying he should retire now, but you can already tell he won’t go quietly, ala Chuck and Jens.

Pulver has taken his share of vicious KO’s. Ludwig, Gomi, Sakurai and Lauzon all KO’d Pulver. The only reason so many people are insisting that Chuck retire is how far and quickly he fell from the top. Fighters like Wandy and Jardine have taken an equal amount of head trauma and no one is up in arms, cause they’re not Dana’s best friends

Yes but I'm talking about recent fights

The Lauzon fight was 4 years ago. From 2007-2010 he’s had 4 sub losses, 1 sub win, 1 KO loss, and a decision to Faber.

Compare that with Liddell from 2007-2010 and it’s in chronological order: KO, decision loss (nearly another KO), decision win (war with Wandy), KTFO, KTFO, KTFO. It’s not good for his health now and it is going to haunt him later.

To me, that’s a more interesting question. It’s sounding like he’s really going to push for coming back, and I wonder who Dana could justify having him fight.

It has got to be somebody who doesn’t have a ton of power. Forrest may be a good pick, but I’m guessing Franklin gets him.

I mean, outside of Tito, I can’t think of anybody that would be a good matchup for Chuck. Maybe Matt Hammill?

Chuck, your chin is gone. You’ve looked great in all of those fights you lost, you don’t have the ability to take a shot like you used to. Your inability to take solid shots is negating the improvements you’ve shown, you looked good against Rashad, Shogun and Rich but no sense in trying to compete if you’re just going to keep getting KO’d. Take Dana up on his offer to have you do other things. You’ve got a bachelor’s degree in accounting, work with the financial department. do the PR shit Dana offered to you.

I’m a huge Chuck fan but I don’t want to see him get KO’d anymore, I don’t want to see him develop brain damage. Chuck was a great champion but his time has passed and I hope he recognizes that before it’s too late

by JimJoe on Jun 28, 2010 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Unfortunately, this is a scenario that has played out many times in history

And it rarely has a happy ending. Chuck shows all the tell tale signs of being in serious denial, and without any genuine insight or sense of objective reality. This is coupled with the curse of fame, and the inability or fear of somehow losing that fame if you do not keep going at all costs. I have unfortunately had the unpleasant experience of seeing this take place first hand with boxers like Leon Spinks, Jerry Quarry, Greg Haugen and others. The sad fact is that most fighters in this position rarely have the ability to leave until it is too late, and Chuck shows all the signs of following in their footsteps. Being involved with MMA coaching for the last several years, I hear different inside information from other camps. One of the things I was hearing was that Chuck was getting tagged and dropped by unheralded 170ers and 185ers while training for the Franklin fight. And this was the same thing that was happening behind the scenes when Ken Shamrock had his last few fights in the UFC with Franklin and Tito. For some reason, they are unable to see this as a bad sign and just ignore it. Then it always happens in the fight of course.

by SimplePsych on Jun 28, 2010 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

Most non-sociopathic, legitimate fans of this sport want to see high levels of competition and a definitive finish. But I think most of us realize that a couple more KO’s could seriously injure, if not kill Chuck Liddell. Real fans don’t want to see that. I’d rather Chuck retire than die to satisfy my bloodlust. As a fan I don't want to see him fight again but...

It seems like if he wants to he is going to. The Tito fight is something I can handle watching, as I wouldn’t want to give Tito the chance to beat him. I think the safest match-up would be against Vladdy. Janitor vs. Iceman, co-main event to GSP vs. Kos. Win or lose, gauranteed walk.

did you see the way he kept looking away when asked about his health. i think deep down he knows.

and chuck, no respectable doctor would tell you that nothing’s wrong. they’ll tell you what is common sense and throw some words in like ‘diffuse axonal injury’ just to sound smart.

You know...

Even if he did decide to come back, I wonder how big a draw he would be any more. A)Most MMA fans, be it Chuck fans or not, wouldn’t really enjoy seeing the guy get KTFO by some dude he wouldve knocked out a few years ago. B) The only fights he could win currently are against VERY mediocre or over the hill fighters with no knockout power.

I also agree with the people, who say he already has had some brain damage. Essentially the guy has had 4 major concussions (at least) in the last 3 years, not even counting sparring etc… He could very well be the first high profile MMA guy to develop early dementia/brain damage. If he fights any more… goddamit all bets are off.
