That's the same thing I was thinking...
I really hope he has something up his sleeve for this fight. I hate seeing someone so skilled like him get dominated because his wrestling is lacking.
It looked like he got Dominated by King Mo.
O’Brien could win this if Mousasi doesnt stop take downs. I doubt he will lose but it still could be a close fight.

I don't know if I would go as far as dominated, but...
Mo definitely beat him very soundly.
Really? Soundly? Looks like someone is drinking from the King Blanket koolaid. Mo won that fight on takedowns and blanketing alone. If there were educated judges or it was in Japan it would have been the loss he deserved.
by RyannVonDoom on Jun 29, 2010 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Give up the whole blanket and anti wrestling angle. This fight wasnt in japan and was under rules that both fighters understood. You can belly ack all you want about what the corrupt judges in Japan would have rules that fight. I am sure they would have gotten a nice fat envelope of money by some russian to make sure the judges went in Mousais Favor.

If Mousasi wins we shouldn't anoint him baby Fedor again...
I am am big fan and I was liking his run through dream, but I always thought people were getting a little carried away calling him a top 6 LHW. He needs more seasoning at LHW.

You’d take them if you could. Just watch, Overeem with lose to some jobber juwst to mess Coker up even worse.
what i've been wondering
this tourney only has 2 rounds? or was “semi-final” a typo on Wiki, and should be quarterfinals? i thought Soko and some other dudes would be there. Minowa?(!)

TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) wouldn’t pay for an 8-man tournament, so Dream made it a 4-man tournament instead. If there were any Japanese LHWs who were good I think TBS would’ve ponied up the money, but they’re only willing to pay for so many expensive foreigners who don’t necessarily bring ratings.
Just assuming Gegard takes this is especially unwise.

Based on the hype of a few months ago he should walk through this without breaking a sweat.
Remember Mousasi is a top 6 LHW and a threat to everyone at the top of the UFC’s LHW division. Oh wait, that’s right. He got worked by King Mo and now people are worried about him losing to O’Brien. :S Is Mousasi better than Jon Jones?
I get that, but a Mousasi showed nothing in that fight to suggest he could beat:
Jon Jones
Ryan Bader
Randy Couture
Matt Hamill
Jason Brilz
Tito Ortiz
Phil Davis
Plus there are some strikers that would be favored against him too…
Mousasi beats most of the people you listed 9/10 times.

Not if he can't stop a takedown...
Until I see more of Mousasi at LHWI am not willing to anoint him as a top LHW
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Renato Sobral don’t warrant top 6 consideration and should only be good for fringe top 10 at best.
Following that up with a loss to a fighter ranked in the mid teens should mean it is time for a demotion. I am a big fan of Mousasi, but I have never been sold on him as a LHW. I always use the wait and see aproach.
Obrien vs. Mousasi has upset written all over it
by I Can't Feel My Face on Jun 28, 2010 7:14 PM EDT reply actions
Don't think so
There’ll be a great deal of uncertainty whether Mousasi will improve his TDD or guard game enough to beat JOB. The odds will reflect that and have fairly even chances for both fighters, or just a minor tilt for Mousasi.
by Flying Gogoplata on Jun 28, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions
This looks like O'Brien could win the tournament...
Jake definitely has the wrestiling to nullify Gegard and take a UD, and if Manhoef wins his fight I’m pretty sure that O’Brien can take that fight if he doesn’t get KO’d on the way in.
There is no way they will put Overeem against Barnett is there...
God dammit FEG.

Yeah, Mousassi better be working on his wrestling. I wish they would stop giving Overeem cans at these events but it’s gotta be so hard to find viable competition. I would love to see Barnett/Overeem but that won’t happen. Feed Mo to him

Watching the fight,
it didn’t look like it took anything close to Mo’s world class skills to take Mousasi down. Mo was gassed and just grabbed him and pulled him. He didn’t even use fancy techniques for a lot of TDs
i think
his strat was to let Mo take him down and gas. similar to the shamrock/tito fight, when shamrock allowed tito to take him down then sink a heavy guard so that Tito would gas. However, i don’t think Gegard was planning to gas so hard himself and that kind of ruined his whole game plan.
i don’t think Gegard was planning to gas so hard himself
If he was planning to gas hard, he officially had the worst game plan ever. :P

This is a good match-up
Gegard needs to work on his wrestling base, as defense, if he wants to set up some more beautiful knockouts. Jake O’Brian is a good match-up for that purpose- good wrestling, not great.
perfect fight
its honestly the best they could do and its a guy whos strength is something mousasi showed a weakness in
honestly id love to see a mousasi, jon jones fight at some point and mousasi will show here how much hes fixed his wrestling problems he showed agains king mo
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
Jake O'Brien wrestling is not near as good as Mo's
Just because Gegard got wrestled by one of the very best wrestlers in MMA doesn’t mean hes terrible at it.
Gegard by Sub
??
Haven’t watched Kang to many times, but the fight i saw him display his wrestling in against belcher it didnt work out to well.
I guess about the same, slightly above mid-level
point is gegard couldnt stop Dennis Kang from putting him on his back.. where did this notion that you have to be a world class wrestler to take mousasi down come from?
Yeah, but he didn’t look too bad on his back against Kang, Sokoudjou or Jacare. The question will be if other freestyle wrestlers can stay on top like Mo did and take the victory with out taking a shit load of damage or getting subbed.
by John Nash on Jun 29, 2010 2:53 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Ryan Bader would beat gegard 9 out of 10 times and so would most of the other 205’ers in the UFC. a guy like Thiago Silva would kill him.
He cant stop the takedown and if you have good sub defense (which most of the guys do), add in elbows – he’s meat.
A guy with his take down defense would lose most of his fights if he were fighting top competition.
Yet another example of an overhyped japanese product the lemmings eat up. He’s got potential, but he’s not a proven talent yet.
Thiago Silva is a poor example. All offense no defense. It’s really a coin flip as to who is getting knocked out.
Has Thiago Silva ever dodged a punch?

I still like him
Was upset when Lawler got that KO over him after Melvin almost kicked his legs out from under him. Thought he was going to get the upset.
that was an AWESOME fight
but it shows that manhoef’s aggressive fighting style will get him into trouble if he doesn’t watch out for the counter.

he fights heavies in K-1
the dudes career has had some solid victories but his career is not exactly top notch. He makes guys that people call “one dimensional” look as well rounded as BJ Penn. Can’t do much if you can neutralize his striking.
Either guy from this fight would defeat him (Gegard already has).
Because he's 200 lbs. of muscle
on a 5’8 frame. As ‘mikedh’ pointed out, he fights at heavyweight in K-1 anyway.
Yes, that means he could conceivably fight against Schilt in K-1, who’s over a foot taller than him.
If you fight, you fight. If you hope, you hope.
Plus he has epic reach (77 inch) for a 5’8 guy.

Jake has 3 losses, Arlovski, Velazquez, and Jon Jones, that isn’t a bad list. He is pretty one dimesional, but we just saw Mousasi lose to one dimension. Jake isn’t the wrestler that Mo is, but he doesn’t lose to average guys, so this will be a great test to see how good Mousasi really is, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jake win a decision.
OVEREEM vs MINOWAMAN
Shit, if you’re gonna go the freak show route, may as well go full freak show.
By wanting to fight Fedor the Reem is obviously ducking Minowaman.
by Polyhedron on Jun 29, 2010 11:59 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
It is the smart choice from a business perspective...
Minowaman is on a 5 fight win streak and Fedor hasn’t won since 2009
The fighters I was getting contacted from were far more interesting than The sleeping Pill Obrien.. My thread on the UG had over 16K views and a lot of responses. Duke Rufus fighters Eric Schaefer, Razak AL Hassan, Mike C from MFS, Seth Petruzelli etc… so many.. and The Vag, aka Ken Pavia snaked in and got this fight? Doesn’t make any sense.
