Wow.

I think Gomi will have more trouble with Tyson than he would have with Joe.

by TMadeBurner on Jun 27, 2010 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

That was my first thought. Probably not nearly the submission threat Stevenson is, but a better wrestler and striker.

by JRN on Jun 27, 2010 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

i disagree. gomi made a career out of beating good wrestler/striker combinations – sakurai, kawajiri, pulver. it’s the bjj guys that give him trouble – guys like kitaoka, florian and aurelio

everything dana white says is a complete lie

I think if we are honest, the Gomi of today is having a lot of trouble with either. Let’s hope he’s somehow not that Gomi though.

And his grappling is fantastic

He would have been a better first match for Gomi though, just to see where he stands in today’s MMA world.

This was the fight I called for to be his first in the UFC.

If Gomi can’t beat a wrestleboxer like Tyson Griffin, who would have been a joke fight in 2005, then he doesn’t have much left to offer.

I’d still like to see him get Sherk in one of those UFC/PRIDE matches made a bit too late (Couture/Nog, Sylvia/Nog, Chuck/Shogun).

Sherk/Gomi is a great fight just to set someone out of the UFC. Sherk hasn’t fought in a year, and looked awful against Edgar.

Sherk hasn't lost to a single fighter

who didn’t end up being a top 10 p4p. Hughes, GSP, Penn, and Edgar are not terrible losses. Gomi is a former top p4p guy too, it seems right up his alley.

That doesn’t mean his skillset hasn’t diminished or been passed over. I don’t think he can compete with the highest level of the UFC.

Me either.

I think his knees are done which is why he doesn’t shoot anymore. But it would still be a fun fight, and I don’t think todays Gomi is the highest level of the UFC.

This repeats the same issue that is either setting up young fighters to move up in rankings with a past their prime veteran or having to continue the 2 and out due to contract cost. Sherk/Gomi fulfills that dream fight 5 years too late but at this point I think Gomi beats Sherk due to a better reach, I don’t think Sherk can shoot anymore.

I think the Florian fight was the same as the UFC giving Kimbo Mitrione after refusing to cut to 205. But this is a much more dangerous fight in my opinion because getting clowned on the feet is one thing, getting clowned on the ground makes you look like a kid. Tyson could clown him hard.

Florian is a totally different bag of worms than Tyson.

Tyson doesn’t have the length or jab of Kenny which were the deciding factors of that fight. He also doesn’t have that crisp of boxing. His workrate combined with the sluggish and historically deficient striking of Franca give a hell of an illusion, but he didn’t offer much to Sherk or Dunham.

Griffin can win this fight, but the Florian fight doesn’t tell us much about his chances. And if glimmers of the old Fireball Kid show up, this a nightmare matchup.

I think the UFC is wasting a huge fight

A Gomi/Guillard fight would be fucking fantastic. It would also give Gomi a fighter that wants to stand and trade who also has a relatively big name in the UFC due to TUF/UFNs. It would benefit Melvin by giving him the “big name” win he needs.

People who would see that as a name win for Guillard

already know he’s a killer. Gomi is not a great win to casuals, and the rest of us would just say he’s done as a fighter.

I disagree since CroCop was Gonzaga’s name win and was a hero to the hardcores without a huge casual following.

Guillard would be a huge name win for Gomi. He won’t just jab the shit outta you, and he has a “suspect” enough chin that a clean Gomi hayemaker would put him out.

Huge if. I don't think it will happen.

But I sure as shit hope it does.

Worth remembering is that Franca showed up overweight, got put out COLD in his next fight, then retired. That was Tyson’s fight to break his 3 year decision streak. He’s a tough fight for anybody, but so is Clay Guida… who was a tough fight for him.

Franca would have taken him down and subbed him, most likely.Gomi,at his best, was still a guy who got tapped when put on the floor with a good grappler.A lot of people forget that he got put to sleep by Aurelio, who was a B level lightweight his entire career.

I don’t know what the UFC is thinking with the guys they’ve given Gomi. Do they even want him to succeed? Gomi should have never fought Kenny Florian and Tyson Griffin is no better. I wish they would have given him somebody easier. Preferably a non-grappler.

Gomi is in a bad place….the UFC doesn’t care if he succeeds. It’s not a good time to be an Japanese MMA fighter, especially one that hasn’t been keeping his game up.

by Koob on Jun 28, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Why give him someone easier?

If he can’t compete at the top tier he doesn’t deserve to be at the highest level of the sport. If he beat Florian he would have gotten an immediate title shot against Penn. Now he needs to prove he belongs.

I’m saying give someone easier because he’s fighting in a cage for only the second time in his career. I think it’s obvious that he can’t hang with the top tier lightweights, but I think he’s a decent mid-tier guy, and I think the UFC should treat him as such. He had no business ever being in the same cage as Kenny Florian. He would lose that fight 10 out of 10 times.

Hopefully this means that Girffin learned his lesson from the Dunham loss, enough of trying to be exciting and worry about winning fights. He goes out and beats Gomi he’ll get back alot of his momentum that he just lost, for his sake he won’t fall into the Sean Sherk trap or he could get beat again.
