Strikeforce: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum - Live Results and Commentary

As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Showtime broadcast (at 10PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
The broadcast is live, first fight up shortly.
Pat Healy vs. Josh Thomson - Round 1 - Thomson shoots in and almost gets the double but Healy is able to sprawl out well. Healy clinching with him against the cage. Thomson uses his forearm to push down Healy as he goes for a takedown, briefly takes the back and transitions to an armbar. Healy manages to escape but Thomson slides right into a triangle choke and now transitioning back to an armbar. Healy manages to escape yet again. Thomson uses the cage to get back to his feet and Healy with a nice throw as he had his back standing. Healy gets his hooks in. Thomson escapes and almost has a heel hook but Healy goes back to standing. Tries for a single and Thomson escapes. They go back to the ground with Healy and the round ends. 10-9 Thomson on the submission attempts. I worry that the judges will give it to Healy on takedowns even though it was Thomson that was at the advantage on the ground. Round 2- They're striking early and Healy with a double leg. Thomson tries to stand up and Healy tries to take his back. Healy gets both hooks in now. Healy riding the back and not really throwing much. Now Thomson turns over and secures half guard. Healy with an elbow which is illegal. Now some good shots from the top from Healy and Thomson escapes. As Healy gets a takedown Thomson almost locks up a triangle. Now Thomson locks up an armbar. It was deep but Healy escaped. Round ends and Healy evens it up with a 10-9 round. Round 3 - Both men landing right hands early. Thomson landing a little bit now. Nice jab from Thomson. Left hook lands for Josh. Front kick from Thomson makes Healy push in for a takedown but Thomson avoids. Healy is slow and tired now. Body shot from Healy. Right hand from Thomson and a jab. Nice hook from Healy. Healy has been unable to get the takedown this round, and as i type that he gets the double. Thomson gives up his back to stand up and flips Pat off. Now Thomson is on top in north south. Thomson taking Healy's back now. Thomson locks in a body triangle Now he sinks in the rear naked choke and Healy says he is fine. Healy is still defending but the body triangle with the choke finally makes him tap out. Very good fight. Josh Thomson wins by submission (rear naked choke), round 3.
Jan Finney vs. Cris "Cyborg" Santos - Round 1 - Finney lands a punch and then gets swarmed by Cyborg. Cyborg landing some knees to the thigh in the clinch and now they're back to space and Cyborg is nailing her and now lands a huge knee. Finney is tough! Cyborg landing huge shots and Finney goes down and is grabbing a leg. Cyborg pushes her down and is trying to land big punches. She lets Finney back up and Cyborg drops her again and starts kneeing the body. Huge ground and pound and now Santos is landing punches to the back of the head after several warnings and has a point taken away. Finney is trying to throw with her now and is just getting drilled. She keeps getting hit but she is throwing punches back. Finney tries for a takedown again. Cyborn throwing huge shots to the downed fighter. Finney is really trying to grab a leg and Cyborg is just blasting her. The round ends and it's the first time I can ever remember scoring a round 9-8, this one for Cyborg. That fight should have been stopped ten times over. Round 2 - Finney lands a right hand early and now Cyborg is just mauling her. This is disgusting. The fight needs to be stopped. This is horrible. Finney almost gets a leg lock and Cyborg makes her stand up. They're throwing and occasionally Finney lands something but she is getting blasted something awful. Finney lands a few shots and Cyborg starts teeing off again. Now a knee puts her down and Cyborg keeps drilling her. Finally the fight is stopped. Cris "Cyborg" Santos wins by TKO (Strikes), round 2.
Cung Le vs. Scott Smith - Round 1 - Smith charge in and he's trying to put it on Cung early. Nice right hand by Smith. Right hand from the clinch by Smith. Smith landing big body shots now. Smith is using pressure to keep Le from kicking here. Le missing with his punches a bit. Nice three punch combo lands for Le now. Leg kick from Le. Smith misses with a hook and a head kick. Nice two punches from Le and Smith shoots. Le sprawls nicely and is landing some body shots. Knees to the shoulder by Le now. Lee really using his wrestling to stay on top and land body shots. Smith manages to get to his feet now and pins Le to the fence. Smith landing a few punches as he gets out. Nice right hand by Le. Head kick from Le just misses. Le landing big punches now. He's getting things together now. Knee from Le. Lee sprawled out after a shot from Smith and he keeps landing to the body. 10-9 round for Le. Round 2 - Le landing some big punches here and a head kick. Cmith charging in throwing punches and Le picking him apart. Head kick again from Le. Spinning back kick from Le and a body shot and Smith drops. Le on top throwing big punches and going to the head and body. Big knees to the body from Le. Smith stands up. Body kick from Le again and Smith is hurt bad and back on the ground. Le with a few punches and the ref has to jump in. GREAT performance by Le. Wow. Cung Le wins by TKO (body kick, punches), round 2.
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum - Round 1 - Werdum misses with a low kick. Fedor drops Werdum in an eschange and Werdum almost catches an arm. Werdum with a triangle that is locked in deep. fedor is in major trouble! FEDOR TAPS! FEDOR TAPS! FABRICIO WERDUM WINS BY SUBMISSION (TRIANGLE CHOKE), ROUND 1!

hells yeah!
love for the seleção, your support is welcome! I felt for you guys today. I was in full support of the US from the beginning, they showed a lot of heart but unfortunately today their skills didn’t shine through. I hope mostdiaolicalhater is wrong about football dying down in the US again, because you guys have everything to be a powerhouse in it, but it’s not going to happen if they don’t have their home country behind the sport. time will tell, ’till then… BRASIL HEXA! :p

When I was on vacation in Bermuda
There was an insane amount of support for Brasil by the locals. Flags, Jerseys, and banners everywhere. Supports of the U.S. team are a large portion of the current Football watchers, but this year is different than the last few WC’s. People are actually following other teams and are really getting into it this time around. Viewership will drop, but I think football has gained a good deal of new fans. It’s the magic of the Vuvuzela I think.
Walking the line between intelligence and ignorance since 1985
@deowade
Brazil is fortunate of having fans all over the globe for our football, it’s really a wonder how many non-Brazilians cheers for Brazil for every WC, we get a lot of love around the world and it’s great.
the vuvuzelas are getting popular here, I didn’t mind them at first but now I’m almost deaf by people passing through my store and pumping those toys, I fucking hate them now lol, I’m afraid they’ll stay around during our regular football season :(

Dude,
I would love to be wrong but all I can do is follow history. You would have thought soccer would have taken off after we had the world cup in 94. You would have also thought it would have taken off after the Women’s World Cup when Brandi Chastain went all stripperella after her goal. But for whatever reason it never seems to latch onto us permanently. It kinda just remains a way to show fake comraderie and get drunk every so often. We are weird.

I wouldn’t. I am hoping Fedor beats down Overeem after this in exciting fashion and then leaves to fight Brock for superbowl weekend next year and then armbars Brock after taking a beating for almost an entire round and then Dana gets down on his knees and begs Fedor to stay and Fedor pats him on the head and says “I forgive you.” and then retires into the Russian sunset winter to become a potato farmer.

I like his style as a coach but what was he doing starting Findley for every game except the one where he was suspended. A guy who has no international goals should not be starting at striker.
Starting Clark was brutal
Then he gives it away at midfield.
He wasted two subs by putting in guys who are superior to the starters. I was pissed we didn’t put in Buddle.

ERA throws in too many uncontrollable variables such as Defense, park, etc.

Our park sucks
So Ubaldo should get extra credit.

There's a stat named FIP(Fielding Independent Pitching), that measures strikeouts, walks and homers.
Ubaldo is at 2.97, which is freakishly good.
Lee is at 1.98, because he is a god.
I am an artist and I have been drinking.
I love Lee too

Lee has a K/BB ratio of 19. Despite the inferior stuff, he's left handed and has a nasty cutter which gives him about as many strikeouts.

I look at it as, sure Thomson tried a bunch of submission attempts, but Healy successfully defended against them, whereas Healy attempted takedowns and Thomson did not defend against them, and thus the control of the fight was dictated by Healy as he imposed his strategy of wrestling successfully while defending against submission attempts.
I think...

It could happen. The thing is, Arona and Babalu both have better wrestling pedigrees and had better chins than Werdum does.
I’m not ruling Werdum out here, he is talented, but it would take a very poor performance from Fedor to lose.

If you had to bet 100k on that fight, you would put it on Brock?
My feeling is even in Brock’s dominant fights, there are short scrambles where he looks vulnerable. I feel like Fedor would be able to pull it out in the scrambles, but you never know.
by Michael Rome on Jun 26, 2010 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I would.
I would bet Brock, Shane or Cain against Fedor tomorrow, and JDS in about six months.

That is the love for a legend, you can appreciate everything they did and when they do something stupid you can make fun of them with your friends, just like Miletich or Rutten or Couture or even Coleman(falling out of the ring) when they do something silly its fun to make fun, but we all respect them for getting us here.

Excellent movie, I was crying at the end, though there is no need to see it in 3D.

yea
3D is turning into the gimmick it was back in the day again. With avatar, even if you didn’t like the movie, it was more about just pulling you into the environment. But seems like every movie now is just back to doing the cheesy stuff flying at the screen or freezing on some little detail to look neat in 3D and end up making no sense in 2D.
by JeremyShane on Jun 26, 2010 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't like 3D - it's an inferior quality of film (less bright, fuzzier images, stuttery action)
Avatar needed it to distract you from the crappy writing. TS3 didn’t need it because of how strong it’s script was. Save you money.

Overconfidence I guess.
We’ve seen Werdum be blasted and taken out before, lather rinse repeat was in his mind and he got caught. What sucks about it is that it wasn’t a particularly quick triangle, it didn’t slide in, it just kind of made it’s way up there and there is no excuse for Fedor right now. I’ve 4 months of BJJ and I could have at the very least reacted to that.

best mma guy of all time? As much as I hate Anderson Silva not finishing fights that dude is freaking amazing and beats the best in the world at 2 weight classes. Fedor never fought Randy (even though i THINK he would have beat him, he never fought him), he hasn’t fought anyone of relevance in the UFC’s HW division.
Even if he would have fought too long and eventually lost to someone in the UFC if he could have beat some relevent dudes and not ducked all the good fighters in MMA the last 5+ years then I would say he is the best.
There's points to be made
And I’ll concede them, but most of the people he’s fought lately outside of his last two fights have been guys not necessarily out of their prime. They went on to have bad careers after him.
I just don’t see it I guess. I’m not going to lose sleep over it though, because I really don’t care. All of my favorite fighters are 170 pounds or less.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

when the UFC drops you out of a shallow HW division, you are on the way downhill. Arlovski and Sylvia were not proof of his domination the way he ruled Pride for a few years. Hong Man Choi damn sure wasn’t. Personally I give him more props for Brett Rogers fight b/c at least when you fight someone up and coming and they don’t measure up, it’s the way of the sport. When you fight someone that is dropping like a stone and they don’t measure up, it’s not that big a deal.
by JeremyShane on Jun 27, 2010 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I just don’t see who could be considered a better fighter, is all. Couture? I don’t know. So maybe Brock/Carwin could beat him now (which is highly debatable, Fedor would still be favorite), does that mean either Brock or Carwin is the greatest of all time? I just don’t know.
Greatest heavyweight of all time, at least?

his stand-up looked the same...
I guess he tried to go into his guard and bomb him Nog style but Werdum was too good there….

Does this mean we get angry vengeful Fedor in his next fight?
The more you drive, the less intelligent you are.

Well, I’m really shocked, but all the respect in the world goes to Werdum. I knew that people were underestimating him, but I didn’t expect him to win, especially not in the first round. He’s a great fighter with an incredible BJJ game, and he showed that tonight.

Ultimately, it’s too fucking bad the sport didn’t get to see Brock-Fedor or Randy-Fedor in major fights, either in 2009 or 2007 respectively. M-1 played a dangerous game, and now their investment has lost about 90% of its value.
In some respects, it might be win-win. M-1 has lost their negotiating power, and Fedor could still end up in some of those fights
he lost one fight in 34 outings
and people are making kimbo jokes? yay internet
Moisture is the essence of wetness.
Are you kidding? He was probably about to face these extortion artists in another round of “negotiations.” You think he’s suicidal about this? Really?

Seriously
His promotion now has a fighting chance at survival.

Finally someone with some sensibility
Coker has leverage and doesn’t have to co-promote unless he chooses.
Strikeforce puts on good fights with cheap/free access. The intelligent fans can appreciate that.
They ain’t going anywhere.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
He had a lot of headaches with M1 but Fedor is what set Strikeforce apart. Dana’s unattainable asset. That is no longer there. What now sets them apart from any other promotion? Some notable fighters, UFC castoffs, but who doesn’t have that. This opened up the Fedor hasn’t fought anyone, and he now lost to someone that got cut by Uncle Dana. Not a hater just saying.
What sets them apart
Showtime and CBS TV deals.
The second best roster in MMA.
A willingness to co-promote and grow the sport.
The ability to run a profitable promotion.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
Coker probably let out the longest most relaxing fart of his life when Fedor tapped.

Hrmm...
Not sure why, but I don’t really feel anything right now. Not shocked, not sad, not happy. Just… nothing.
I just want to see Sexyama fight.

I'm kind of relieved, actually.
The wait is over. I was afraid he’d lose, now he has. I’m placated by the fact he didn’t care.

Same here. I went from screaming at my computer for him to stop diving into his guard to….ok……that happened.

I’m actually going to look forward to Fedor’s next fight more now. Maybe he will dive into heavier competition more now that the whole air of undefeated is gone.
i think that will be the overall allure at this point… how he will come back, the re-stoked fire, etc.
don’t think there’s any doubt he’s still p4p best… although it didn’t look like they were practicing the triangle escape…
If it makes it easier to get him in the UFC, then it’s a good thing.
I’m sure every fighter wants to be the guy to beat him; but personally I still want to see him fight Lesnar, Carwin and others.

I guess once you’ve survived prime Nog’s guard, you don’t fear anyone’s, but that was flat out stupid on Fedor’s part. Let him get up for fuck’s sake.

I'd like to reiterate a point I made above
Which is that early MMA is going to be very confusing for people looking back on it
It’s not Dana White’s fault that this is how Fedor’s streak ended.
