Wanderlei Silva Injured, Out of UFC 116 - Chris Leben In

According to mmafighting.com:

"Wanderlei Silva, who was scheduled to meet Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116 on July 3, has been forced to withdraw from the card due to fractured ribs suffered in training, UFC president Dana White confirmed with MMA Fighting Tuesday afternoon."

"UFC is currently working on signing his replacement. No word just yet on who that might be."

[UPDATE] - Chris Leben rumored to fight Yoshihiro Akiyama:

A source close to the event told MMAjunkie.com Leben has agreed to the bout and is expected to sign shortly.

[UPDATE 2] - Chris Leben is confirmed:

Leben's placement in the fight was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the fight on Tuesday.

[UPDATE 3] - Chris Leben talks Akiyama:

"I don’t know a ton about Akiyama. My coach knows a bunch, but we haven’t even had a chance to talk much about our game plan. I saw him fight Alan Belcher and to be honest with you, I thought he lost that fight. He’s a good Judo guy, he’s got great Judo, fast kicks, maybe not the most power in the world. He’s a little bit shorter than me but he’s a good strong guy. I think that utilizing my skills, keeping it on the feet and clubbing him in the head with my left shouldn’t be too much of a problem."

obv

but if Paul Harris beats Nate….he’ll be very close to a titleshot. Does the UFC really want to give another Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guy to Anderson?

Okami or Munoz might get bumped up. People are suggesting Belcher, but that’s a real rough cut for him in 10 days.

I really hope they don’t move Grove up.

clear 29-28 W for Akiyama no need for a rematch for me

by Shocbomb on Jun 22, 2010 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought Belcher clearly won 29-28. Also, if he didn’t fuck around showboating it wouldn’t have been even close. Instead he got himself taken down a few times because he decided to get cute.

by Electro Boy on Jun 22, 2010 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

God,people who cry about the Belcher-Akiyama decision puzzle me to no end.Belcher stood around throwing one flashy kick every 20-30 seconds, while Akiyama was consistently sticking a solid jab in his face and landing three and four punch combos on him.

The only judge who thought Belcher won that fight was Doug Crosby…….the same judge who thought Frankie Edgar won every single round against BJ Penn.

by Shocbomb on Jun 22, 2010 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I had the same

but for Belcher. That fight was way too close and should get a rematch sooner or later

by av1o3 on Jun 22, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Rogan can get off Belcher’s nuts, Akiyama won that fight.

by Hardcase on Jun 22, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes a fight that is a great example of Rogan/Goldy clear Favortism. Belcher would land a punch then Akiyama would counter with like a 3 punch combination and all you would hear Rogan scream about was the one punch Belcher landed. I really do believe Rogan & Goldy made so many fans believe that Belcher actually won that fight with there one sidded bias commentary.

by Shocbomb on Jun 22, 2010 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to roll my eyes at you

that’s not how the fight went at all. You making it out to be about Rogan is complete bs. Yeah okay, all Belcher did was land fancy kicks and Superman punches while Akiyama blasted him combos the whole time. Yeah, that’s what happened.

Belcher won the striking battle. I thought he won the fight. He woulda won the fight easily if he didn’t start showboating and giving up easy takedowns.

He thought he had the fight won and got cute and it lost him the fight.

by Electro Boy on Jun 22, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Really and you know that how ? Were you one of the judges of there fight or did you talk to all 3 Judges after the fight was over and you learned that they all had that assessment and opinion of the fight ? In my opinion Akiyama out struck Belcher bottom line

by Shocbomb on Jun 22, 2010 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

And many of us disagree with that opinion.

I was at the event, no commentary bias here. I scored it for Belcher live.

exactly I think Akiyama wins this fight easy. Rides out top control for a 3 round decision even on the feet Akiyama is much more crisp and has power also and could easily put Leben to sleep or just out box him like Bisping did for a decision.

regardless, as coker says, cant we all just get along? this is MMA, complaining about FREE fights on SF is laughable and counterproductive…complaining about UFC fights that we have to PAY to SEE…makes a lot more sense.

I’m surprised people are so happy about Leben getting this shot. It’s not a compelling fight to me anymore. Leben isn’t a top-level opponent, Simpson win or not. I’d rather see Akiyama get a fight that matters a little more. But, it’s pretty tough to get a kickass fight on 10 days notice.

Twice in two weeks?

I don’t like it. So be it. Not sure how well Akiyama has adapted his judo without the gi. If he’s smart he doesn’t go in and slug it out with Leben. Smart move would be to judo toss Leben’s ass all over the place.

The fan in me hopes Akiyama goes in and stands and bangs and gets KTFO. He has a solid chin and solid power but he can’t beat Leben in a brawl.

DW was mentioning a few weeks ago on a video blog that the winner of Wandy/Akiyama fight could have title shot implication. Just last year everyone was tolling the death bell for Leben after he lost to Rosholt(whom himself was canned).

Now look at him, he is stepping in to fill Wandy’s shoes in a fight he could very well win and he could be knocking on the title by the end of the year. Amazing

You have to appreciate Leben for stepping up. I wouldn’t have done it.

I think taking fights on short notice is bad for your career but these guys are crazy and don’t give a fuck.

On the other hand, this is a huge step up for Leben. If he gets a win his stock will skyrocket.

I was way wrong on Simpson, but that’s because he’s not too bright.

I make Akiyama a 4:1 favorite.

by Electro Boy on Jun 22, 2010 6:57 PM EDT reply actions

Akiyama SHOULD win. Let’s forget the Simpson fight for now and just analyze Sexyama vs. Leben.

Akiyama’s not a devastating striker, but his also better than most. He does get hit a lot though, as Belcher showed, and letting Leben even hit you a few times, is not good. Could Leben catch Akiyama enough to put him to sleep? Can Leben defend against Akiyama’s Judo? Those are the two main questions, in my mind. Will be a fun fight. I gave Wand the edge because he utilizes his legs way more than Leben does, but since Leben likes to head hunt, I’m not quite sure.

"The true science of martial arts means practicing them in such a way that they will be useful at any time, and to teach them in such a way that they will be useful in all things." - Miyamoto Musashi

by Kaleb Kelchner on Jun 22, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Akiyama has solid boxing, solid power and a solid chin. I think he’s a little stiff and that hurts his potential in those areas. Leben has big power and maybe the best chin in the sport.

I question Akiyama’s judo without the gi. I don’t think he’s fully adapted yet. I also question Leben’s wrestling/grappling. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not horrible, it’s just average. I don’t think he can consistently stop Akiyama from taking him down if Akiyama went into Judo mode. I don’t think he would fair well on the ground with Akiyama either. He won’t get dominated, but he’ll still lose.

I think if Akiyama goes into Judo mode and sticks and moves the few moments it’s on the feet he should win easily. I just don’t know if he’s going to do that. Akiyama likes to get into striking battles and I think that drastically hurts his chances. He can’t go toe to toe with Leben. Leben is just too tough and has too much power.

Akiyama should be able to outbox Leben, get takedowns, and get a late submission or win a pretty clear cut decision. But the fact that Akiyama has sat on the shelf for a year, along with the fact that he’s hittable at times, wouldn’t make me all that suprised if Leben landed a killshot on him.

Saw the Wandy thing earlier in another thread and was wondering who they would get on such short notice. That’s not a bad choice considering what’s available.

Not bad

Leben stepping up, definitely making sure he stays on for a few more fights.

I like the matchup too, Leben isn’t nearly as technical as Wanderlei but we still get to see how well Akiyama can do under pressure from a heavy handed striker.

Should be exciting!

That everyone is so upset! How can you not like Leben? He always brings it and to be honest the only time I’ve seen Akiyama fight is against Belcher. Leben will put the pressure on him and will be a real good test for him.
I actually think that with the momentum from Leben’s last fight that it is really smart for him to take this fight as everyone is so high on Sexyama(god i hate that name).
I’ll be rooting for Leben by KO!

I can’t believe you guys think Leben is even in the same category as Wand?

If you think the Leben vs Sexyama fight is a worthy co-main event for PPV is an insult to every UFC fan and is not worthy of me to even consider opening my wallet for!

Lost complete and total respect for the UFC matchmaker, as he tries to help defraud the public with this utter fraud he calls a “co-main event worthy of PPV status”….Could maybe consider it if it was on Versus!

Gee let's make a list.

Anderson Silva – Defending the belt against Chael August 7th.
Chael Sonnen – See above.
Nate Marquardt – Fighting Paul Harris August 28th, possibly for a title shot.
Rousimar Palhares – See above.
Yushin Okami – Fighting Mark Munoz August 1st.
Mark Munoz – See above.
Vitor Belfort – Injured.
Demian Maia – FIghting Alan Belcher September 15th.
Alan Belcher – See above. With a win might get title shot. Just fought 6 weeks ago.
Patrick Cote – Just fought Belcher 6 weeks ago and lost.
Jorge Rivera – Fighting Sakara August 28th.
Dan Miller – Lost to Bisping three weeks ago.
Michael Bisping – See above.

Now, who am I missing that is available and soooo much better than Leben?

Everyone is bummed over Wand being out. But Leben is the best we could hope for on short notice. At least it should be entertaining.

by Day Man on Jun 23, 2010 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Not that I really object to Leben

But why would Bisping be out of consideration after beating Dan Miller three weeks ago if Leben stepped up after fighting even more recently?

by Pantherhare on Jun 23, 2010 2:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying any of those guys are out of consideration. I just listed fighters and the possible reasons they couldn’t step in to fight in 10 days. If Leben hadn’t stepped up so quickly I would have put him on that list, too. Any one of those guys COULD have stepped in, but I just listed reasons why they might not. It’s not just about finding someone, they have to be willing to agree as well. Not too many guys are going to want to take a fight on 10 days notice, especially if they have something better lined up.

Guy tried to make it seem like there was 10+ guys just waiting around twiddling their thumbs itching to get in the cage ASAP. The guy was bitching about the replacement but didn’t bother to make any suggestions.

by Electro Boy on Jun 23, 2010 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions

It's been brought up before, and I've made intelligent posts in this topic

You on the other hand, have made completely ignorant posts despite numerous explanations about why Leben stepped in to face Akiyama, but yet you’ve made repeated posts bitching about a fight that’s been put together on two weeks notice. Since you think you can run the UFC, I wonder, just who can you put in there against Akiyama on two weeks notice? Electro Boy has posted an entire list of relevant middleweight fighters who are either booked to fight or would be incapable of passing a physical or potentially booked for an upcoming event. That is why I called you a moron or “Monrans” or “Moran” because every post you made in this topic in which you’ve whined and complained has been refuted by legitimate reasoning as to why this fight ended up being booked. So please Mr. Armchair Booker, please tell me who can step in on two weeks notice with no training camp to speak of? This was an intelligent and mature post, something that you have not posted in the comments for in this topic.

Chill out and be reasonable. Let’s think through this together. We will go slow so you don’t get to confused.

Wand is out. He got injured. These things happen and it’s unfortunate. The fight is 10 days away. Want to just scrap it all together?? How about NO!!! Okay, who can we get on 10 days notice that still make the fight competitive?

Look down at Electro Boy’s list. You still following me? We talked to some fighters and so far it looks like only one person is willing to step up and will most definitely make the fight challenging.

It’s Chris Leben.

I agree that its a bummer. I fkn LOVE how Leben stepped up. Pretty much a no lose situation (yes he can lose, but you know what I mean). I guess this may set up Wand/Bisping 2 @ 120 (w/ Hardy/Kampmann or Condit on SPIKE?)

by Yasnian on Jun 22, 2010 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

This is a competitive bout, honestly. Its not like Akiyama is that great. If I have a problem, its that I know Leben’s ceiling. He’s not a top guy. He’s not even like the next step down the ladder. Or the one after that. Not even the third best middleweight from Team Quest. Silva wins, and maybe we can talk about seriously moving him into title contention. Leben wins? Who cares? Akiyama wins this and it doesn’t advance anything for him.

Someone just above me said something about Akiyama wanting to wait for Silva, so maybe this fight wasn’t agreed do on their side. Guess we’ll find out.

by VirtualBalboa on Jun 22, 2010 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

by Electro Boy on Jun 23, 2010 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Okay. So he’s not there. He’s also still not anywhere near elite and never will be. Maybe if Akiyama loses he’ll move to welter where it look like he belonged in his last fight. That’s the one thing that interests me in this bout.

How is a quick knockout by Carwin not exciting? And do you really think Carwin can take 5 rounds of hammerfists? More like 2 or 3 rounds of hammerfists and Carwin looking like he’s about to get fatality’d.

by Electro Boy on Jun 23, 2010 7:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Great fights are bouts like Rampage/Forrest Griffin or Cro-Cop/Fedor. A 45 second KO or a couple rounds of hammerfists: Not great fights.

i'm with you on that

i couldn’t possibly come up with an exact definition which features an exciting fight has to have; there are too many valid options to pick from. but just for my personal taste I don’t think i’m going to enjoy the next main event as much.

i’m even a little bit worried that it might be just another promotional bubble that pops on the fence of the octagon – when either guy is held against the cage for 5 rounds straight.

Go big red!

by pornflake on Jun 23, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

UGHHH NOOOOOOOOO

Wandy is my #1 alltime fave fighter.
Akiyama is my #2 alltime fave fighter.

Leben is one of the biggest pieces of garbage in the sport. He’ll probably get a DUI between now and then. This should have been Bisping stepping in. Leben is not a big or good enough of a name for Akiyama. If Akiyama loses now, he will be RUINED completely as a commodity.

GO SPURS GO!!!

by TDITZ on Jun 23, 2010 8:10 AM EDT reply actions

I’m no Leben fan but the guy usually isn’t in boring fights so given the availability of the guys ahead of him in line I’m fine with this.

I can’t shake the feeling that Leben is going to catch Akimaya.

I see whoever wins this fighting getting the winner of Nate-Paul Harris since it appears that Vitor is going to get a title shot based soley on his win vs Ace @ Franklinweight.
