Quote of the Day: Chuck Liddell Still Undecided on Retirement

Image via UFC.com

"I’m still working on evaluating. I thought I did great before I was caught. I have to look at it some more and think about it. I think I looked good and I definitely was in great shape. I could have kept that pace up for another four rounds, without a doubt."

"It’s hard to beat that [aggressiveness] out of me, because that’s who I am and that’s who I’ve been for a long, long time. People like watching me because of the way I fight, so it’s hard to get me not to fight that way."

"There’s a lot still to think about. I felt pretty good and I think showed I can compete. I’m not going to rush and I’ll do what I think is best. I’m just not at a point to make that decision yet."

--UFC Hall-of-Famer, Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell (21-8) talked to Kevin Iole and said that while he hasn't decided on retirement yet, he feels that he still has some gas left on the tank.

Not a good sign...

sounds like the first step in convincing himself that he can still fight again.

Definately not a good sign. That practically guarantee’s Chuck will fight again… Maybe out of anger Dana will place him on a undercard or for free preliminary on Spike before a ppv? Or maybe Dana says no and he goes to Strikeforce?

I have to wonder...

if going to Strikeforce as his only option after so long with the UFC would be the wake-up call he needs?

I think he would go...

He has too much pride to let someone else dictate when and how his career ends. Just to try to prove he isn’t done, I bet that he would go.

Apparently I'm in the minority

but I thought the punch that knocked him out was a legit knockout punch.

Chuck’s weight was coming forward and it hit right on the bottom of the chin. I think that punch knocks out most guys. And Chuck looked excellent up until then.

Criticize his defense, but I don’t think it was his chin that did him in this time.

by Django Z on Jun 21, 2010 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Rich had his whole body into that punch

It was no less a legit knockout punch than Carwin’s short right that crumbled Gonzaga.

Its really the way Liddel was knocked out that was the problem, if he was dazed for a bit and then got up soon after the fight ended that would be one thing, BUT that did not happen, he was out, not moving and down for some time. It was a brutal knockout.

by Kefka on Jun 21, 2010 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions

It was a lergit KO punch,

butity isn’t just that one punch that is the issue.

Nobody wants to watch Chuck get KO’d anymore.

by truck on Jun 21, 2010 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure it was defintely a legit KO punch..

It was on the button and had some force behind it..

That’s not the problem though..

Essentially, Chuck is like most fighters or athletes that reach an apex in their sport or profession. They refuse to accept defeat at the hands of mother nature. It’s not that Chucks chin is completely shot. It’s that his entire body is vastly coming to a halt in competitive fighting. If you notice his body mechanics are completely lumbering now.. He defense is always going to be a liability, it always has been. The difference between now and then was his body was able to respond in a timely enough manner to avoid any major damage.. Now he just can’t get off and get out of the way fast enough.. He’s essentially telegraphing everything because his body is slow.

He’s just not going to withstand the punishment he’s going to get from the top of the LHW division anymore.. Sure he can be competitive in a sense.. He’s always going to have a punchers chance. He’s at the end of the road and chooses to avoid reality rather than embrace it.. No one should be shocked.. His competitive mentality forbids him from accepting defeat mentally, physically and emotionally. He’s just another great athlete that’s lost his bout to mother nature. Try telling Michael Jordan today that he couldn’t hang with Kobe and Lebron.. Try telling any great former athlete that peaked in their respective sport that they can’t compete anymore.. The majority of them will find a way to deny it..

Chuck, not for us.. but for yourself.. Just hang em up.. You have nothing to prove.. You’ve done it all.. You were one of the first mainstream stars of the sport. You were a defending champion. You got the money, the fame, the cars, the women, you got it all.. One thing you just wont get again is that title and it’s not going to disappoint anyone at this point.. All greats leave a legacy.. Don’t let yours be another story of too stubborn, too late…

Chuck has had 29 professional fights...

all but 5 of which have been in the UFC, and 2 of those were in Pride representing the UFC. I have to think that if Dana said to Chuck that if he wants to continue fighting that it won’t be in the UFC that it would have some serious impact of Chuck.

I hope it would.

doesn’t automatically translate to Chuck + fighter with leg kicks = loss. Chuck still has a sufficient enough amount of power to put Griffin on his ass at any point.

it’s not a matter of how good of shape he’s in, he just can’t take the shots any more. And realistically if we we’re being fair he’d have to keep his career going somewhere else cause losing your last five fights out of six, four by KO, just doesn’t cut it for the UFC no matter who you are.

This is what puts him in a different space then a lot of other over the hill fighters

not only have his skills diminished, but he also just doesn’t have anywhere near the punch resistance he used to and that little “take a year off to heal the brain” experiment of his obviously didn’t help out any. This is why guys should stop just relying on their heads to block shots just cause they can take a hit and really focus on solid defense otherwise it’ll come back and bite them in the ass like it potentially has for Nog as well.

Cro Cop is 35 and doesn’t want to fight anymore, not to mention he’s had 9 more MMA fights than Liddell and 23 kickboxing bouts. Wand is 33 but he has had 16 more fights than Liddlell has had in his career, including numerous wars in Pride. Big Nog is 34 but he has had 11 more fights than Liddell (including some scary Pride moments). I see what you did but you made the mistake of picking guys who Pride tried to kill during their careers there, that makes a big difference.

The difference is that Keith Jardine has never had a good jaw to begin with.He was always a guy who was prone to getting knocked out.He was getting lamped in six seconds by Travis Wiuff all the way back in 2002.

Chuck on the other hand traditionally had a great jaw. This guy could take a hell of a shot and come right back.He got straight folded against Guy Mezger, and came back to win that fight.Took multiple kill shots from Vitor Belfort and didn’t even blink. Now,a stiff breeze will knock him out. That’s a clear sign that he’s taken too many blows.

Totally different case from Jardine, who could never take a shot to begin with.

I have yet to hear Chuck discuss the fact that his “chin” is blown. Yes you looked better. Yes you threw more kicks. Yes your cardio is great. Yes you charged in with absolutely no defense and got knocked unconscious by a short right hook that you used to eat for breakfast, AGAIN. Stay this madness!

by Kwisatz Haderach on Jun 21, 2010 12:39 AM EDT reply actions

This was seriously the worst fight Chuck could be thinking about retiring after…he looked the best he has in years, better than the Wanderlei fight from what we got to see…but…I just feel like his chin won’t stand up even against up and comers. I don’t want to see him go out losing to some kid, want to see him go out at least saying he has the skills, but his body just doesn’t agree.

It’s gotta be hard though, I won’t judge Chuck whatever decision he makes…but my preference is obvious.

Sometimes.. When your body breaks down as it has for Chuck..

Your best simply isn’t good enough anymore..

Sure he looked good for most of the round and almost won the round. But almost isn’t good enough… Keith Jardine “almost beat ’Hamill”

Rampage Jackson “almost beat Rashad”

Couture “almost beat Nog”

Barry “almost beat Cro Cop”

Gonzaga “almost beat Carwin”

Chuck has a mentality that follows this pattern or belief:

Three isn’t a winner… and two nobody remembers.. Almost doesn’t get him anywhere in the sport at his age..

Chuck Liddell is quickly becoming the Brett Favre of MMA. And just like with Favre, I am finding it harder and harder to care with each career related flip-flop.

I don’t think he’s flip flopping as much as other people are speaking for him.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

Oh sorry, I thought that since the person being quoted was speaking in the first person that it was Chuck speaking in the interview.

As far as his retiring goes.

The Favre reference doesn't work

On several levels. For one, Chuck never said he was retiring, the “league” said he should. Two, Chuck didn’t try to screw his old team or prevent others from ascending in the ranks. He and new fights may co-exist. And third, Favre can still perform among the best in the league.

Being overrated is overrated.

The only comparison I was making with Chuck and Favre was the "will i wont i " bullshit. If you dont know, go clubbing or play touch football in jeans for a while and get back to me when you make a fucking decision. This sad desire to be in the forefront is just lame.

The Favre comparison also works because Favre blew it in the Championship game by pulling the same old gunslinger bullshit, throwing across his body over the middle of the field and cost his team the game. Chuck is doing the same thing going in there swinging wild with his chin out when a solid fart in the general direction of his chin will help him get his Z’s.

Wow, I just realized that since Chuck K.O.’d Tito he is 1 and 5 (knocked senseless in four of those losses) and his one win is over a guy who is 2 and 5 over his last seven fights. If hes not done as a fighter he definitely needs a step down in competition.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

by Day Man on Jun 21, 2010 2:30 AM EDT reply actions

He should retire from a medical point of view, but if he wants to risk permanent brain damage for his ambitions, I can’t really say I would stop him. He is a grown ass man, if he doesn’t realize what is happening to him, or if he does and wants to take the risk and if the ACs keep permitting him to fight, then so be it.

Chuck Liddell vs Houston Alexander? No.. he might get ko’ed.. Eric Schafer? He might get subbed. Matt Hamill? He might get staph. Keith Jardine? He might lose to him again. Tito Ortiz? What if tito knocked him out? Dana would kill himself. Who else is there? Tim Boetsch? He’d probably wreck Chuck. Call up David Heath? He’d probably win too at this point.

There is really nobody at 205 that does not represent some kind of risk for Chuck and the less the risk presented, the less reward the victory has for Chuck, which further reduces his legacy.

Chuck took over a year off, did everything there is to do in the sport, he should just rest his brain for the sake of his children, get a corporate job with the UFC so he isn’t slurring in a chair in his 50s with alzheimers and a limp.

What about Stephan Bonnar?

by Tats16 on Jun 21, 2010 3:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that might be the only fight left for him, or Brandon Vera. At least if he fights Vera one of them will be somewhat marketable, given how hugely disappointing they both are for me, personally.

by DirtyML on Jun 21, 2010 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Chuck’s going to want Tito before he retires because that is personal. I would imagine that if Dana did go for that then that would be the last favor.

Tito still won’t shut up. Just look at the last season of TUF, Chuck says numerous times that Tito owes him a fight. I don’t get it either but he just seems to really want to fight Tito again.

He's going to end up brain-damaged

If he keeps getting his bell rung like that. Man, it’s not like we want him to retire because we hate him… we love the guy and what he’s done for the sport, and we want him to exit before some permanent damage gets done. I know it’s hard to look in the mirror and realize you’re not what you were 10 years ago. It’s just another type of midlife crisis, when people come face to face with their mortality and it really hits them that yes, they’re going to die one day, and they’re probably at least halfway through this journey. It’s a real watershed moment in life. It’s often traumatic. But there it is. Just let go, Chuck. Let it go. Find a way to be involved in the sport without getting in the ring. Train kids. Be a spokesman, hold camps, announce, help Dana pick match-ups, be an ambassador for MMA, just don’t get back in the Octagon, dude. Peace.

This sums up my view on Chuck Liddell’s refusal to go quietly…

by Chortles on Jun 21, 2010 4:13 AM EDT reply actions

Chuck comes across as a lifer

Like he says himself, he doesn’t know what else to do but fight, and pretty much doesnt seem to want to learn. That usually translates into a bad ending. For his sake, I really hope that he does decide to retire…Although must say that I’m not optimisitic.

Give him Tito. When he gets KTFO by Tito of all people maybe he’ll get the picture.

They're both done, really.

Tito will never fight again. He’s broken.

Chuck versus Ken Shamrock would be cool…

I hate calling out for a guy’s retirement, but I would hate to see Chuck lose anymore. He has accomplished so much in the sport; there really isn’t anything left for him to do.
