WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus - Live Results and Commentary
As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Versus broadcast (at 9PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
Kid Nate filling in for Brent Brookhouse (I hear there are a lot of titles on the line, oh wait...): And we're live on Versus.
Eddie Wineland vs. Will Campuzano Wow, Wineland is only 25. He's had a lot of ups and downs in a short time. Round 1 Campuzano comes out and takes center cage. He's firing but not connecting save for leg kicks. Wineland moving well, hands low. No one looking for the clinch or take down. Wineland catches a leg kick and lands a hard right to the face. Wineland checks a leg kick. Campuzano missing. Wineland moving all over the place creating very weird angles. Another caught kick, punch counter from Wineland. Leg kick from Campuzano lands. Hard right lands and drops Campuzano. Again Wineland was teeing off a leg kick from Campuzano. Another leg kick caught and Campuzano gets thrown down in the final 0:10. BloodyElbow scores it 10-9 Wineland.
Round 2 Campuzano winging and missing with punches, lands a leg kick and a jab. Wineland may be slowing, lands a right. A combination. Leg kick from Campuzano. Jab from Campuzano. Right to the face of Campuzano. Wineland still making him miss. They trade a right straight for a leg kick, again. They're exchanging, not much landing clean. Body kick from Campuzano lands, Wineland catches it but doesn't counter. Leg kick from Campuzano. Superman punch starts a combination that hurts Campuzano! Wineland follows him down and pounds away but Campuzano stands up! Incredible to survive that. Campuzano fires with knees and kicks. Wineland hurst him again. Forces him back. Again Campuzano fights back. Then he eats a brutal body shot to the sternum and drops him. A brutal downward right hand to the cheek finishes it. Eddie Wineland by TKO.
(Brent Brookhouse back in the driver's seat)
Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Downes - Round 1 - Horo with the leg kick and now Downes is trying to work from the clinch but Horodecki is looking for the takedown, and he gets it. Horodecki slips on a very tight guillotine in a scramble. Downes is staying calm and looking to shake out and he manages to get out. They're standing with Horodecki pushing him into the cage. Horodecki gets another takedown and transitions to mount, Downes gives up the back in an attempt to escape and now is fighting off a choke. Downes manages to escape and now is in dominant position but Horodecki manages to stand up. The round comes to an end and it was a clear 10-9 round for Horodecki.
Round 2 - Horodecki busting him up with strikes early in the round and Downes is throwing awkward looking strikes back without landing anything significant. Beautiful spinning kicks to the body by Horodecki and Downes is hurt. Downes has nothing for him on the feet here. Horodecki with a takedown, they scramble back to standing and it's more of the same with Horodecki going to both the body and head. Great four punch combo to the body and head and then a three strike combo to the head and legs by Horodecki. 10-9 round again for Horodecki, close to a 10-8.
Round 3 - Downes coming out aggressively but it's mostly wasted as it's Horodecki landing the telling shots including a great kick to the body. Horodecki with a big takedown and he moves to the back quickly. The rear naked choke is sunk in and it's all over. Chris Horodecki wins by submission (rear naked choke), round 3.
Josh Grispi vs. LC Davis - Round 1 - Davis tries to counter a leg kick with a two punch combo but comes up short. Grispi keeps going back to the leg kicks. Head kick attempt from Grispi just misses. Davis is having trouble getting close enough to land his hands.More leg kicks from Grispi and a nice front kick that lands. Davis with a big double leg and Grispi spins his hips and has a guillotine choke locked in. Davis is out! Davis went out cold from the choke. Josh Grispi wins by technical submission (guillotine choke), round 1.
An undercard bout was shown between Erik Koch and Bendy Casimir. Koch won via first round triangle choke.
Mark Hominick vs. Yves Jabouin - Round 1 - Leg kick from Yves. Head kick just misses now. Yves is extremely quick here but Hominick lands a nice right hand counter. Yves kieeps throwing kicks to the leg and head. Nice body kick from Yves and now Hominick lands a counter right. Right hand lands again for Hominick. Nice body kick from Hominick and one from Yves in return. Right hand from Hominick. Yves keeps throwing strikes non-stop, not everything is landing but he's making it hard on Hominick. Right hand lands for Hominick again. Spinning back fist from Yves now. Nice jab from Hominick. Left hand from Hominick. Now a right hand lands. Spinning back fist from Yves misses this time but a body shot lands. Back to the leg and now a nice head/body combo from Hominick. The round ends and despite what the commentary may have made you believe it was fairly close, but a 10-9 Yves Jabouin round still.
Round 2 - They start out with a couple quick punches from Yves and now a combo from Hominick backs him up. Wow, spinning elbow lands for Jabouin. Hominick with a hard punch. Left hand lands hard for Hominick. Body shot from Hominick hurts Jabouin badly and Hominick is landing some follow up shots. Yves with a spinning back elbow and now Hominick is landing big shots again. Yves lands a shot and Hominick goes down. Yves follows him to the ground and Hominick sweeps him into mount. Hominick landing some big punches from on top. Yves has nothing for him on the ground and the referee stops the fight. Mark Hominick wins by TKO (punches from mount), round 2.
Jamie Varner vs. Kamal Shalorus - Round 1 - Hard leg kick about 30 seconds in from Shalorus. They exchange and Varner just misses with a hook. Big head kick from Varner lands. Right hand lands for Varner. And another. Both men land hard right hands now and Kamal with the body kick. Right hand lands flush for Varner. Hard leg kicks from Shalorus. Varner keeps landing his punches, it's a good round for him aside from the leg kicks. Varner with a big shot and Shalorus is hurt. Varner gets sloppy tring to close and Shalorus recovers as he avoided damage. Now Shalorus shoots for the single and Varner avoids. Body kick from Shalorus and then an accidental eye poke. They're still going and they exchange big punches. The round ends and it was 10-9 Varner on my card.
Round 2 - Left hook from Varner. Leg kicks from Shalorus. Varner with a nice hook. Low blow by Shalorus on an attempted leg kick. Break in the action to recover. Hard two punch combo from Varner lands. Shalorus is showing a very good chin. Another low blow from Shalorus. This time it results in the loss of a point. Kamal keeps throwing the hard leg kicks. Kick lands for Varner and Shalorus is hurt badly. My cable then cut out for the rest of the round. Looked to be a 10-9 round for Varner though.
Round 3 - I come back to Varner on the ground after eating another low blow. For some reason ref Josh Rosenthal doesn't take a point even though he should as he established the point deduction with the last foul. Poor reffing there. They're back to fighting and Varner keeps throwing punches even though he is clearly hurting from the low blow. Shalorus with a takedown now. He hasn't been able to do much damage yet though. Shalorus using open hand strikes to the ribs and Varner keeps tying him up and avoiding damage. Varner tries to scramble but can't get up but then he uses the cage to reverse back to standing. The round ends and it was a 10-9 round for Shalorus (should have been 9-9 had the ref done his job), making the fight 29-27 on my card.
Official scorecards: 29-27 Shalorus, 29-27 Varner, 28-28 draw. The fight is ruled a draw.

Was there some particular issue between them prior to the fight?
That would at least justify, at little bit, Varner acting like this post fight?
Somehow, for a short period of time around when he won the title, I liked the guy…but looking back I’m not sure why.

I’ve paid for events through UFC.com and the quality was terrible. Tons of stuttering. I ended up using an HD flash stream from somewhere else even though I’d paid for the legal stream. The pitiful thing was that the not-so-legal stream had twice the quality of the legal stream and zero buffers. I’d pay for streaming every event if UFC improved their streaming technology.

good footwork from both guys
lots of combinations, leg kicks and body shots, good counters, tight straight punches. It was nice. Wineland did make Campuzano miss a fair amount, but that was because of his odd approach to creating angles and constant movement.

Still not really sure how I feel about the reffing.
It probably should have been stopped twice earlier, but it was pretty bad-ass seeing Camp get up after that flurry. And then get body shot KO’d.
When he first fell and was covering up, he wasn’t fighting back. Should have been stopped I say.

That has got to be one of the worst nicknames, “The Fluke.” It’s disrespectful honestly. They better keep him away from Jose Aldo.
I really don’t see how that nickname is disrespectful. Is it disrespectful to Grispi or his opponent? Also, is a nickname really enough to deny Grispi a Title shot?
by chrisbboy82 on Jun 20, 2010 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions
You call him a fluke, I dont know I think that’s disrespectful. Also, I never said because of his nickname, he shouldn’t get a titleshot. I’m saying he is slow and his striking is rudimentary compared to Jose Aldo and he’ll get teed off on.
He’s from New England. It could be in reference to the fish, or it could be an ironic nickname. He obviously wouldn’t rock the nickname if he felt disrespected. I think it’s an excellent nickname. Like an old time boxer would have.

Well UFC 115 was good. Aldo vs Faber was great as well. And UFC 110. Top 4 cards of the year so far. Probably forgetting something though.
UFC 115, Strikeforce Los Angeles, TUF 11 Finale, and WEC 49
All cards that were “meh” but all were great shows.

Karen is in a downward spiral. What the hell?
"I have trained to fight an army. There is no way one man can stop me if many cannot." -Georges St. Pierre
He needs some armbar defense or something. That was the second time in as many fights that he lost to an armbar from his opponent’s back. Karen just needs to be more aware of his limbs on the ground.
by chrisbboy82 on Jun 20, 2010 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
My jits instructor and I had a conversation two weekends back about how the rubber guard and armbars from guard are practically fruitless in modern MMA/BJJ (unless you’re fuckin Roger, who can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants). Karen is behind the times.
"I have trained to fight an army. There is no way one man can stop me if many cannot." -Georges St. Pierre
by Charles Awad on Jun 20, 2010 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Eh.. it was a pretty long conversation
The short version is that guys are just wise to those tactics modern day. The rubber guard has turned into a closing technique/time waster and it’s increasingly difficult to catch someone with an armbar while they’re in your guard.
"I have trained to fight an army. There is no way one man can stop me if many cannot." -Georges St. Pierre
by Charles Awad on Jun 20, 2010 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah just wanted the cliff notes. Thanks.
I’m on board with the rubber guard. I’ve rarely seen it used successfully. I’m not sure about the arm bar, but I’ll think on it.
If you fight, you fight. If you hope, you hope.
I know what you mean. I’ve seen fighters just power out of them, and then there is stacking, and just a lot of other ways to escape that particular armbar. I can see that armbar working actually if the person on the bottom has long legs, but otherwise, there were things Karen could have done to get out of that. Karen just sat on his butt and took it, which is completely wrong. Rubber guard works if the person using it is bigger than the opponent like when George Sotiropolous used it on Joe Stevenson.
by chrisbboy82 on Jun 20, 2010 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions
You mostly see the armbar transitioned from a triangle if it’s in the guard. That seemed too easy for Kerr.

Joe Warren takes those types of armbars as well because he leaves his hands on his opponent’s chest.
That armbar did seem too easy for Kerr though.

It’s who the judges think won, not the exact number in their case.
Who told Kamal he was a good striker?
He throws wild, sloppy, looping arm punches. He’s like Wand except he’s stiff and doesn’t put his lower body into his punches. He doesn’t have big power. He has horrible defense and retreats backwards instead of circling away. I’ve been saying this since his first fight in the WEC.
Good thudding kicks though.
Dude should stick with his wrestling and just use his strikes to set up takedowns.

FWIW
I had it 29-28 Varner.
Ist: 10-9 Varner
2nd: 10-9 Varner (with point deduction)
3rd: 10-9 Kamal
^this
Never seen anyone punch someone in the face that many times only to get kicked return and actually lose the fight. Crazy! I did just become a big fan of Kamal though, tough guy. Although Varner was real tough for sticking it out through the leg kicks and the nut shots.
Ubereem is here to kill the Finkelstein monster!
I was hoping so bad that fight would be a draw and it was, I had it 1st Verner second a 10-10 and 3rd to Kamal
You really think Varner did enuff to win that round ? Kamal in my eyes did enuff with the point taken away to pull it back to even
meh – could’ve gone either way I suppose. I scored it for Varner 10-9, but it could’ve been 9-9. My problem is with the 29-27 card for Kamal – I think that’s indefensible. The first round was one-sided from my chair. Kamal landed some kicks, but Varner landed everything and rocked Kamal.
"Yes Gina, I am a Wise Cracker"
By rocking Kamal
yes he did do enough. People are pointing out the leg kicks, but Kamal was visibly very shaken up there.

I think 30-26 isn't all that farfetched
I had Varner clearly winning the first two rounds, and he landed a lot of strikes from the bottom in the 3rd, avoided damage from Kamal, and had a good reversal.
Personally I gave Kamal the 3rd round, but I could see an argument the other way.

I would've done it my way since the first shot was fairly glancing.
The second and third shots were pretty bad. Hence why I’d take a point off after the 3rd shot.
also agree. Varner played that 3rd nut shot up a little also as soon as time was back in he showed to signs of pain in his groin at all. maybe I am wrong but Verner just rubs he the wrong way like he is looking for any way out of a fight. Him begging Josh Rosenthall to take apoint saying please you have to really got me pissed.
well to bad it did not and the fight endded up like it should of in a draw. I just don’t see how so many think Varner did enuff in that second to win. it was a clear 9-9 round in my eyes

So does everybody who had a parlay involved either fighter end up losing their bet? This could be a great night for the house.

Yes, I believe they lose
I think that has a lot to do with judges not hanging out 10-10 rounds often.

UPDATE
I got paid for the other fights on the parlay, and it was treated as if this fight was canceled (i.e. it did not play a factor). Good to know.

The judges scorecards would have meant jack
If Rosenthal had taken the point away if not DQ him in the 3rd.

All ring announcers are lame. I wish they would get rid of them already.

Yup, let’s just get someone to use sign language to give us the scores to us after a decision. That makes sense.

They should just get rid of all the judges too
and leave every fight open to interpretation like a David Lynch film.

Even when it comes to controversy the WEC is tops...

I got it 28-28
honestly not surprised

neather was I. I was real happy with the draw. But I wish the judges came to it in a different way. The Cameron Quwek giving Kamal the 1st is just insane I have no idea what he was watching in that round
ya Varner had that round.
honestly im just happy one judge actually said this fight was a draw.

Sorry dude, I always figure everyone’s like me and must know results immediately. My bad.

Knew it was bound to happen
I used to just avoid BE for a week, but I’m not THAT excited for the card.

no way you can last a week in this day and age. back in the pride days you could avoid the news for a week, because nothing else was happening that you needed to go online for.

Doesn't mean I can't try!
Though, this just supported your theory.

Except
Wand is more fluid and has power. Kamal is stiff and throws arm punches.

Helwani, the host, and Faber make this good.
The other two…not so much.

hes really the best in the business
i would love to see him on mma live instead of fucking franklin mcneil
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
Another great night
WEC delivers again. I think it was the best card of the year. Maybe not as big of match ups like the Aldo vs Urijah card but the fights definitely delivered. I really wish the WEC could get the ratings that the UFC gets. People are missing out on some of the best mma in the world. Incredible fast paced wars. There was only one fight that went to a decision tonight. Which I did not agree with. You can’t say that about the UFC cards lately.
Shut up, Tito.

My feelings for tonight’s event are best described by the Matt Hughes “I love it!” gif. Sadly, I could not find it.
