Jason Brilz Will Return to the Octagon a Better Fighter
My whole game plan was to go out and perform. I had a chance to finish the fight and I didn’t, so it is what it is. I’m not too worried about it. If you leave it up to the judges, that’s what happens. I’m just going to have to start finishing fights, I guess. They said I’ll be back. Joe Silva said before the fight, ‘You’re doing me a favor here, thanks very much and no matter what happens you’ll be back.’ I’m just going to continue to do my thing. It’s been working pretty good for me. I think with every fight I’ve had in the UFC, I’ve gotten better. I’m not the best guy at any one discipline, even at my gym, so I’m constantly learning and picking up new things. I’ll be back bigger, stronger, faster next time and more technical. I’ve got the guys who know how to do it, they won’t let me slack and it will be fun.
Brilz certainly deserves to return given that many fans feel that he deserved the win against the #7 light heavyweight in the world in Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. I scored the bout 29-28 for Brilz but given the close first round it is entirely possible to see how two judges saw fit to give the fight to Nogueira.
Brilz does appear to need work on his shot as he was reaching and slow against Nogueira, but Rogerio was willing to go to the ground so he wasn't putting up much resistance. Against a better striker who can sprawl and keep the fight standing he will likely have a fair amount of trouble.
The most interesting thing to me at this point is seeing what Joe Silva does with Jason for his next fight. Does he go back down to the lower end of the division or does the UFC see him as a guy they can use against top level guys?

I think Hamill is the perfect fight for Brilz right now. It’s competitive match, perfect top of the card material for a UFN or TUF Finale and it gets Brilz name out there.
The winner of Hamill/Jardine would be my suggestion. Or Brandon Vera when he’s ready.

My first instinct was Brandon Vera. It’s a good fight for both at this time, IMO.
Good suggestion, Beer Monster!
With the fight he gave Lil Nog I don’t see Vera having much for him – but he deserves a W after taking Rogerio on short notice. That would be a nice headliner for UFN.
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" Dana White must love it when guys spew the “Don’t leave it to the judges” melarchy. How ridiculous. Let’s just make stupid rationalizations about fighting and judging instead of someone like White using his real power with commissions to spearhead their improvement.

Judging
Will never be perfect, no matter what. Even if we had an ideal system the “don’t go to the judges” mantra would be sound advice. On top of that, most fans don’t want to see decisions.

given the close first round it is entirely possible to see how two judges saw fit to give the fight to Nogueira.
Thank you. The crazy venom about that decision is ridiculous.

Yeah. Its more of a flaw with the ten point must system than with the judges that night. Brilz’s second round was much better than any of Nog’s rounds, and it should be weighted more. The system needs to change. It wasn’t a good enough round to be given a 10-8 (by todays standards of a 10-8 round), while it was much better than a 10-9.

Good he's not down about it.
I can’t but see this as a moral victory for him. The decision was debatable, but the performance wasn’t. I had no expectations for the guy who sucked against Eliot Marshal at 103, and he nearly KO’d Lil Nog. I hope he keeps improving and stepping it up. I’ve heard that people compete at the level of their opponents, and he certainly did.

Yeah this is one of those losses where a fighter's stock goes up, and in Brilz' case, WAY up.
Many people (myself included) thought he was a can that Lil Nog was going to crush.
Franklin/Liddell
Since I figured Lil Nog would get the chance against one of them, why not Brilz. Another big name, less risk fight and he can work harder on his shot against decent strikers.

I don't know why everyone was hating on him to begin with...
He’d only lost twice in 21 previous fights, and he’s beaten game opponents like Tim Boetsch and Eric Shafer. I know everyone excpected Nog to win, but I hadn’t seen anything to think that he was going to get starched in 30 seconds like everyone else thought…
I was hating on him because of the Eliot Marshall performance

if the first round was so close, why not just score it a 10-10?

Totally.
Judges need to score rounds 10-10 way more, IMO.

Opportunity of a lifetime for Brilz
He came in as an enormous underdog on the betting lines and as a can in the majority of peoples’ minds. I thought it was a huge mismatch as well, that Lil Nog was going to squash him. Then Brilz fought a fight that had to amaze anyone watching who knew anything about either fighter. He opened that window then blasted through it, Kool-Aid man style. Even though he lost, he won big time and quite possibly in one night made a career for himself.
Come on. Trying and failing to get a guillotine for a few minutes wins you the fight? He was getting dominated at the final bell. If he had won round 3 he would have won, but he didn’t.

That's weird
that they didn’t raise his hand then. I thought that was usually what happened…

Said it before..............
The real issue here is the judging!
Dana thinks the MMA websites are working for others………….who the hell are the judges working for?
The bookies?

I scored the first round for Nog, but it was close. I’m fine with Nog getting the nod as in close fights like this, I like the win to go to the guy who was dominating at the end of the fight, not the guy who was on the ground getting punched in the head.
A note to all those who complain about wrestlers taking over:
Nog’s sweeps were amazing, and everyone who gets positionally dominated by wrestlers should take note and brush up on their jiu jitsu, at least their sweeps.
I could see scoring the first round a either for Brilz or as a draw, I don’t get how you’d necessarily score it for Nogueira unless you were just waiting for Nog to KO Brilz and somehow missed that Brilz was doing more.

DIE HARD PRIDE NUT
It was a great fight that I myself thought was won by Brilz. His comment is great, I’m a fan of his attitude.
Slightly OT: with regard to the LHW division and the complaints about the ‘boring’ main event, a) what about bones? And b) what if bones fought bones? Lnp?
