Rampage Jackson Blames "Greg Jackson Plan" for Boring Fight Against Rashad Evans

"I apologise for the fight not so much because I lost but because of how it went down. I always like to put on exciting fights for the fans but Rashad came out to use that ‘Greg Jackson’ plan: be boring and squeak out a victory. So that bothers me more than the loss," Rampage said.
"I remember one other thing he [Rashad] was doing - he was punching me in my knee! It was weird because I had suffered a real bad knee injury in camp but we kept it secret, we didn’t say anything about it and we didn’t even tell the UFC."
"I told my doctor and that was it, he helped me out but I was going to back out of the fight. The only reason I didn’t back out was the fight had been so hyped and I didn’t want to disappoint the fans. Why was he punching me in the knee though? That’s kind of weird - did he find out about the injury? I don’t know. Its weird."

How about quit whining about gameplans...
and simply stop the takedowns. It was silly of you to not know what was going to happen so quit your whining mr Page and expand your game,,,

It seems Page is becoming more and more about excuses and reasons things didn’t go his way that had nothing to do with the actual fight..
Gameplan is part of fighting.. He should try a good camp and see how it works out for him in the future instead of blaming himself for what he’s really at fault for..
Rashad had a gameplan and stuck to it.. Page didn’t and it shows…

Great
Now the Rashad haters will completely discredit this victory even more than they already have because Rampage was hobbling around on one leg with his knee having been amputated.

Rashad's chin and standing defense are pretty bad against good/powerful strikers.
But his recovery and survival instincts are absolutely remarkable. His footwork and head movement will be his undoing if he doesn’t seriously close up those holes, because there’s a damn good chance of getting concussed eating those power shots, even if he doesn’t get his lights turned all the way out. Not to mention that chin fades with age, and he’s probably peaking right about now.

So predictable, so easy to target. Good thing he’s going back to his wrestling because if he keeps trying to stand with guys and doesn’t establish the threat of a takedown, he’s gonna get plastered.

Rampage was out of shape...
That is why he lost and that is why he wasn’t able to throw Rashad off of him and why did didn’t finish hiw when he was hurt.
It is as simple as that.
I was cheering for Page, but I realized after the first round that he was out of shape and all he had left was a chance with his power.
You gotta give Rashad some credit for winning the fight too.
His wrestling has greatly improved.

Rampage’s inability to stop anything Rashad did is why he won that fight.
If Rampage had been able to stop ANY of it, Rashad would’ve been forced to go to Rampage’s strength. Rashad can’t be seriously blamed for having a crappy gameplan just to appease the masses.

Based on recent
judge scoring in MMA, I no longer consider their scoring actual fact.
I now use action figures and put pennies at their feet when they win (based on my scoring.)
If no action figure is available for a fighter, I use my sons Lego men or Army guys. It gets complicated ( a lot of fighters look a like) but it worked very well til my son took his guys back.
lets not get to literal

that you’re calling out a guy who fought what you regard as a boring fight (I enjoyed it) as a bad fighter who doesn’t deserve credit. The objective of a sport is to win, not to entertain.
I can agree with you there . I didn't ....
… enjoy the fight as much as you due to all the wall & stall . I give Rashad credit for not taking damage and having a good game plan . And in my opinion the objective of a sport is to both entertain and win . Anytime your fans pay your salary its has to be a duel objective . I guess my point here is the scoring system or the way the rounds are scored needs to change so that your not rewarded for doing so little . But until then a win is a win .

The whole thing that is missing from this discussion is that Page SHOULD have ended the fight when he had his chance but he failed. Exactly...
Leonard Garcia is untechnical and wins a lot of gift decisions. I refuse to even compare his hilarious punching to Rashad’s technically unsound boxing, and I bag on Rashad’s hands a lot. He’s also not a great wrestler, doesn’t control distance well, and ends up in bad positions on the ground all the time. Even though he’s got great heart, so does Rashad. He doesn’t give up and fights to recover when he’s in shit situations. I can’t think of a time he’s really wilted under pressure, even while gassing.
I knock Rashad really hard. I think his last two victories have been boring and unimpressive. I can critique his technical abilities all day. But to say that Leonard Garcia of all people is a better fighter is a true sign of somebody hating just cuz he’s gettin’ styled on.

Yes, but...
Rashad opened by cracking Rampage but couldn’t finish. Rampage closed with what looked like a knee if I recall correctly but couldn’t finish. That’s about it…
As for Rampage, within the next year or so, Rampage will be a fringe top-10 LHW in the eyes of all but a few PRIDE fanboys…yes, his boxing has improved somewhat since PRIDE, but that’s it.
He just hasn’t evolved sufficiently for the modern LHW class and he is not a strong enough wrestler to be able to somewhat offset that. If anything, he’s devolved since PRIDE.

I have sympathy for Rampage for two reasons
1) I’m a pretty big nuthugger
2) I was let down by the fight. It’s just like if some 9-7 team wins the Superbowl by forcing fumbles and kicking field goals. It’s deflating.
I don’t knock Rashad’s gameplan, it was intelligent and successful. But despite my fanboyism over Rampage, I wouldn’t have been dissatisfied if there was a KO, sub, or even a GSP/Fitch-esque type result. Hell, something cool like Soto/Stevenson or Nog/Brilz would have been great, even though these guys don’t fight in that style.

I agree wiht that completly . All I ask is ...
… for the attempt to finish . Rashads gameplan was great and he did well with it ( minus the last round when he let up and nearly got KO’d ) .

Oh yeah
I remember that part. I also remember when he got up, reversed Rampage, took him down, and tee’d off on him for a while. That was pretty sweet.
So, do you still maintain that Rampage and Thiago Silva are good 205ers and Rashad isn’t despite beating them back to back? Because that is still hilarious to me.
Yea he really ...
…. tee’d off on him . Did the fight end because of his teeing off ? No .
And yes I still maintain that Rampage and Thiago are better 205ers than Rashad . The difference here is I don’t bash for having a differing opinion where as you and other douches do . So laugh it up there chuckles because my opinion ain’t changing .

Not really . What did Rashad prove ? He proved he ...

I promise I won't talk about that first punch
Instead I’ll ask what did Rampage do to stop the power doubles all day? If you equate entertainment with being effective thats okay, but then Machida sucks to because he fights for points.
The final minute and a half of the fight was Rashad punching Rampage in the face repeatedly. I’m not making that up, you can watch it and see it yourself.

I still don’t get your point. Rampage was thoroughly worked. Had no answer for the takedowns. Was unable to circle off the cage. And his only offense was Rashad shooting into his knee due to distance. Seriously, Rampage didn’t punch him to knock him down, Rashad shot face first into Rampages knee (he wasn’t throwing a knee).

He also had about a half-dozen changes from the half guard
And he whiffed on every single shot of consequence he threw from there.

Rampage did hit him with a punch . Theres a photo floating ...
… around this site somewhere thats shows the punch ( and there its is as I’m posting , Thanks DancingChicken ). And Rashad got only 3 takedowns on 12 attempts aginest a fighter coming off a 14 month layoff so to say he thorughly worked Rampage is overstating the situation . Did Rashad win the fight ? Yes . In dominiating fashion though , no .
My point he Rashad was using position to stall the fight ( in my opinion ) and to out point him through cage control rather than doing damage . He fought to keep position because he knew that every second out of the clinch or not on top of Rampage was dangerous for him . So in the waning moments of the third round when he knew there was nothing left to fear( due to time left and position ) he finally let loose and did not fear losing the position .

Rampage did quite a bit
to stop the power doubles. That’s what made the fight so boring to some.
Rampage was pretty effective at stopping take downs, but he was very ineffective at avoiding the clinch. It made for boring moments (for some) as Rashad unsuccessfully looked for the takedown from the clinch.
Rampage’s fight with Randleman was pretty much the same deal. He stopped the takedowns, but couldn’t stop the clinch. The difference was that Randleman gassed after a few minutes, lost control, and Rampage knee-ed his head into orbit.
If you fight, you fight. If you hope, you hope.
ah... the yellow cards
Yellow cards are the reason that fight moved on from a hug fest to a KO. Randleman was shooting and clinching, and the japanese ref rightly yellowcarded him for stalling. Rightfully so, IMO. You can see Rampage’s reaction to the double yellow card too… “WTF I’M trying to fight, HE’S the one who’s stalling”
There needs to be a mechanism in MMA to deter stalling. The yellow card is the best one I have seen to date.

I have been very entertained by the reactions people had during and after the fight. In addition, I don’t expect Rashad Evans to risk getting knocked the fuck out so I can oooh and aaah. It’s his job. I’m watching him do it.

The problem for me is when this was built up to be a mega grudge match fight between two dudes that can’t stand each other. I understand the idea of working for a win however you can get it. It doesn’t always lead to the most exciting fights to me personally, but the goal is to win.
When Rashad and Rampage decided to build up their hatred for each other, I’m sorry, but I was expecting a slugfest, or at least hoping for one. That’s where the problem is I think. Not only are the casual fans disappointed, but a decent chunk of us “hardcores” were also hoping for something entirely different based on the words and emotions going in.
Had this been just another regular fight I feel like the backlash against Rashad would be much less than it is.

Really
I figured it would be the exact opposite. I figured the casuals would buy into the fake grudge match and the hardcore fans would see right through it.
At no point did I think their dislike for each other was genuine nor did I expect it to effect their fight.
Typical pathetic Rampage excuses, these are no surprise the fact is he got schooled by Rashad and he’s going to have to live with that fact for a long long time.
