Crazy screaming Japanese lady announcer = bought.

First of all, she's not Japanese

Second, if you bought games solely based on her participation, you’d own a lot of games that you probably don’t.

Yep

I like her mostly for what she’s done in gaming, not what she does in MMA (braces self for attack).

I haven't played most of 'em

Since I saw an old interview with her and found out she did voice acting I still didn’t buy the games due to styles and the fact that there’s just something magical about her announcing in huge arena.

I mean, does anyone here remember the PRIDE game? I used that to try and get some fan converts back in the day with it, and she instantly made Nog fans out of anyone.

by asa on Jun 16, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

try this again…

No it was a joke. I’m buying the game because it looks good and I’m a fan of MMA and was, thus far, have been disappointed with how THQ has handled Undisputed’s online. Quick match does not work. You have to go to custom match several times in order to finally get into a game. A month later and still no patch to fix the issues. Plus Gamespy for online…really?

Obviously EA is putting a lot of support into the online aspect with the whole Live commentary and all that. Not something I’m going to use but it just shows me that they care about the online. May we also compare the E3 event. THQ and EA both put on live feeds to watch both games. What happened? THQ has numerous issues. Many people that got picked to play Undisputed live got connection errors (no surprise) and the feed apparently didn’t even work. EA’s live feed? Worked fine…watched it….loved what I saw. King Mo vs Mousassi and Jacare vs Mayhem with Maurilo and Mayhem doing live commentary while one of the developers talked to us over a chat. Was very entertaining.

I saw some things I liked early on, but it suffers from some of the same herky-jerky “rejected transition” animations that the UFC games do. Plus, what the fuck is with Randy coming off of Fedor’s back with such ease three times? Dominant positions seemed meaningless. General animations look more smooth than in UFC (more natural), but the punching was pretty awful— like they were fighting underwater. They were striking like gassed out fighters in Undisputed.

Not as close to the industry as I have been in the past, so I don’t have those liberties. Nintendo fuckin slayed this year. Their press conference blew my mind hole.

Something just seems really weird. Specifically the way they float around the ring with lightning speed and then, like Blackout said, punch like gassed fighters in Undisputed.

I bought the first UFC game, ended up not liking it. I will give this game a chance too. The reasons I’ve read to skip this game seem fairly petty or unimportant. If I’m just constantly circling around pressing the head kick buttons without ever getting a submission I will shit can this game like the UFC branded one.

Yes, more than the people who like them more than the UFC, I could argue. Because I like MMA. I’d really like an alternative that does different things well. Obviously any game (especially a first year game of a sports franchise) will have it’s flaws, it’s just if the flaws decrease the overall playability.

If anything, the stand up doesn’t seem worst than undisputed. You want to see robots fight just stand and trade in undisputed. But it all comes down to gameplay mechanics anyway. If every fights end up in the first, or if subs are too easy or too hard, I’ll pass on this one too.

Striking Animation

Those curves are turrible. I don’t sweat the foot skate since they’ve got enough on their plate without implementing a parametric step planner or something, but the striking curves (the animating equivalent of kinetic-linking over time) are killing me. absolutely unpleasant and thoroughly unsatisfying.

The anims look like they might actually be awesome in the keyframe posing sense, but they look like gassed bad actors because of the timing.

This is something they definitely can polish-up by October, so I’m not gonna give up hope yet. I hope EA’s reading the feedback from the online communities that follow the sport closely.

Wow, the game might not completely suck, but it’s light years behind Undisputed in terms of animations and just smoothness of gameplay. The graphics look pretty good, and the sub system might be better, but everything else looks terrible.

Just watched a hands-on on G4

Some some very promising features— including an interesting see-through appendage effect that showed the bones of an arm going white to red, reflecting the risk of an arm bar, before becoming deeply red and snapping. That looked pretty rad.

This game will probably have worse game play, but it seems like they are making up for it with cool little things that THQ didn’t really put in. I’m considering buying it just for stomps.

I was just saying the same thing over the weekend. May as well, they own the license. It would be epic (in addition to WEC divisions).

the wec divisions should be added as DLC

it’d be a great way for THQ to pocket another 20 bucks from us and it makes a shitload of sense from a business standpoint

Guys...and haters?

Watch This UFC 2010 footage here.

Then come watch EA MMA again. Fighters in Undiputed 2010 move clunky and robotic compared to EA MMA. The textures and lighting arent even close. EA blows it away. Give this game some credit. Just because its not UFC doesnt mean its crap. Im sure this game will hit at least a Mill. EA will be satisfied with it and move forward.

Mike Goldberg: "You know Joe, When Matt and his brother Mark Hughes were growing up, they would pound each other behind the barn."

by xFenixKnightx on Jun 16, 2010 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

Yah side by side comparison really draws on those graphical and animation differences. EA is by far superior technically speaking which is to be assumed as they have deep pockets and way more experience is sports combat games

by pandaboy99 on Jun 16, 2010 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh of course, its just annoying to read all the comments and then look at the video and see EA is superior.

Heh, I can picture Dana playing this game at his house loving it and being blown away, then pasuing it to jump on his Blackberry and tweet that the game is shit. He’s a fan, he will be checking it out. I cant wait to see some UFC fighters tweeting how cool the game is. Ill be sure to retweet it to Dana. =P

It does look very good graphically and everything they have explained thus far about how submissions work and are mainly done with “timing” and not button mashing sounds appealing. I really hate “shining” in Undisputed. Also, see the top of this page to see Blackout’s attitude…best to ignore him when he tries to start stuff.

But I’m sure there will be a demo. I’m not really worried actually. Usually I’ve got a pretty good “instinct”. The only bad game I’ve bought lately is FFXIII, because I thought it couldn’t be SO bad, lol. Then it goes back to the psx with a game names KENSEI.

FF13 was pretty damn good man, the new battle system was refreshing and entertaining. They put a lot of time into it and did it right, I hated the linear gameplay don’t get me wrong but it seems like open world + the new battle system could have been overwhelming. Versus on the other hand should fulfill both wishes.

One thing I'm really happy about is....

….the striking sound effects. I really hate when devs think they need to use Hollywood style sound effects for punching and kicking.

The sound of those little 4 ouncers is music to my ears. Really adds a nice level of realism. Definitely one thing missing from Undisputed.

Game won’t be out till October – hope they keep polishing it. Right now it just looks clunky. Some definite bright spots, but just clunky…

by EvilScott on Jun 16, 2010 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

they move VERY weirdly around the ring, kind of a mix between floating, and ice skating. they move too fast and cover way to much ground.

yeah, where is the ref?

i do like the feel with the grafix though

by dank7 on Jun 17, 2010 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

noticed that as well before. The ref disappears when the fight starts. I hope that is just them still working on the game and they aren’t actually NOT gonna have the ref in there. Not that it really effects gameplay all that much but it seems like a weird decision to have him disappear.

by handlas on Jun 17, 2010 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Hm…compared to Undisputed 2010, the ground game looks excellent and the striking looks disappointing.

In EA, the ground transitions look more fluid and I like the non-button mashing (or stick rotating) nature of submissions, not to mention the different mechanics for joint locks and chokes. I also really like that fighters move constantly while on the ground, makes it look a lot more realistic.

On the other hand, the striking just looks plain awful. Skating footwork, herky-jerky animations with inconsistent speed, and I’m not seeing the touted defensive game supposedly imported from Fight Night.

For me, I think the career mode will be the deciding factor. EA’s already got the edge in my book via including the Vale Tudo ruleset.

by gzl5000 on Jun 17, 2010 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

the striking will be good, no doubt, analog stick is by far > buttons for striking. i hate how powerful standing elbows are in ufc 2010, and how fast they can be thrown via button mashing.

by kanodogg on Jun 17, 2010 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Standing elbows are definitely way overpowered in Undisputed. Still, good controls won’t make up for terrible animation. You can have the best controls in the world, and if the action onscreen is stiff and awkward like in the video above…

by gzl5000 on Jun 17, 2010 2:36 AM EDT up reply actions

This looks so much better than Undisputed in practically ever phase of the game. Wouldn’t be surprised if Zuffa terminates their license with THQ the second they get the chance.
