I had the opportunity to play this game today with one of the developers who is spring on the game and it is lightyears ahead of Undisputed in the control department. After just picking it up I knew how to do flying armbars, passing guard, posturing up and everything. This game is AWESOME. I plan to play it some more tomorrow.

is it smoother to look at?
cause they look really stiff on the videos.
by Anton Tabuena on Jun 15, 2010 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Way way way smoother.
We’re watching 30 frame per second video of a game that actually runs at 60.

That would seem to be a negative point to me. I prefer the game to have depth. The animations look pretty smooth but things like just tapping A to do a takedown seem a bit too dumbed down.
by HarmlessNinja on Jun 16, 2010 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions
oh it's not dumbed down like you think
when I shoot in for a takedown my opponent’s controller will shake and if they hit the circle button at the right time they can deny me. And as far as the submission game goes it’s a timing thing where if you time your button presses right without gassing you can get out of the sub. Also, you can parry strikes similar to the way you do in Fight Night. The controls are much more intuitive than Undisputed’s unnecessarily obfuscated controls. There still is much depth and strategy to the gameplay though.

This is what happens at E3...
You are playing the game in a very controlled environment created by the developers. You are also playing the game with developers or public relations, so you constantly have them in your ear selling you on how amazing the game is.

No the guy really wasn't doing that, I was in HIS ear telling him how amazing it was.
He wasn’t a PR guy, he was the character designer. I just like the control scheme in this game way more than Undisputed, that’s all.
When you actually see it in person it runs at 60 frames per second just like undisputed even though all the footage of it I’ve seen to date shows it at 30FPS.

I will probably pick it up
but I’m spoiled by the responsiveness of “traditional” fighting games.
Actually it is very responsive.

If the world hasn’t figured out that I’m now throwing all my chips in with EA, consider this the official notice. If the only thing I can really complain (not even a complaint, just something not to my taste) about is the x-ray submission thing…then they’re in really good shape.

That all I read from you was Undisputed this, undisputed that…
The game got old fast?

Anton hit the nail on the head, after about 4 days of it I spewed a venomous review. I was more critical than I should have been, but my closing opinion on it is, it’s the best yet, but putting bells and whistles on 09’ doesn’t make it worth 60 bucks.
There are things they do right, but plenty of things they do wrong as well. If Undisputed deserves credit for anything, it’s trying to go deeper with online play, and the community. Otherwise, too much menu in career mode, not enough fun. A few of my suggestions would be to let a career mode be a camp of fighters, not a single one, where you have to be careful who you bring in to the camp to achieve well roundedness, or if you want, you can have a gym focused on single dimensions…like “MMA gyms” (read as: Kickboxing) in Holland.
They’ve done well to put out patches to fix quite a few of the things I was groaning about, so good on them.

what changes did they bring out?
and yeah, the menu thing on career mode was very repetitive and pretty boring after a while…. but hey, it’s only their second game, and maybe they’ll get it down on the next one, especially with more competition after the EA game goes out. :)
by Anton Tabuena on Jun 16, 2010 3:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Off the top of my head, they’ve changed the omoplata insta-standup, and the Machida insta-takedown. Also have altered CPU submission defense. So, significant stuff that I was griping about. I think the game shines in some places, but it’s time to show some love to off-line play, and really, really doctor up career mode. Once again any bonus events you could do just wasted time, with little benefit…just…I dunno. So much of the “mma lifestyle” focuses on living fast (Affliction, looking at you) and the menu heavy career mode just kills it.
The one thing that I know for certain, is that the series has room to grow, and plenty of potential. I think THQ will walk away from 2010 with significant customer input, a lot of good ideas for the future, and so more cash in their pockets. Right now the ball is in EA’s court. If they produce a better game than Undisputed, it might not sell as well, but it could satisfy those who find things lacking in Undisputed and don’t feel like giving it a shot each year. I’m predicting EA to be pretty good, but THQ’s next Undisputed game is going to deliver above and beyond what the people expect.

I remember being condemned
about 2 months before 2010 came out for calling it a glorified update. Half of that stuff could have been worked through patches. They completely stopped support for 09 in order to give us a spruced up 09. The only new things worth mentioning are the cage and abiity to switch submissions. But they often dont come into play.
The speed that Mayhem was moving around seemed to "Arcade Mode" to me
just doesn’t do it for me…I’ll still pick it up but I don’t have high hopes.
I like what I'm seeing so far.
Only complaint is that every match ended extremely fast. Not every fight should be ending by (T)KO in the first, and especially not Jacare who won by head kick with little to no setup.
Also, since the stomps and ring are some of the unique features they have over Undisputed, why wouldn’t they show them at least once?

haha if it felt like Tekken
with more realism, that’s probably a good thing.
can someone answer this question for me....
I have issues with button tapping(its a nerve thing)…so take Madden 2010, I must turn off “fight for the fumble” because I would lose EVERY tap war…Do I need to be able to button mash over and over…like saints row 2, in the arena, you have to tap different buttons…is it at all button tap based?
If you button mash you will gas.
You need to slowly repeat a button press when doing a submission so you don’t gas yet you keep enough pressure on to get the tap.
by Polyhedron on Jun 15, 2010 11:58 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
awesome, I love that...I just can't stand games that base your production on how fast you tap the button...I just cant do it.
So excited for this game….
oddly more excited about the Strikeforce roster than undisputed’s entire roster
Subs look better
I love Undisputed other than the ground game. I’ve played other games that require spinning the joystick and done well, but for some reaosn i lose every sub battle in the new UFC game. It annoys me. I’m not convinced this will be a better game, though. Only time will tell.

That’s because you should be doing strength submissions (by clicking the joystick at the right time) and just finishing them with the shining.

hence why dana white goes and bashes EA
if they dont do business with HIM, then they hate MMA…I just dont understand why he cant just be happy about the sport getting bigger, he wants to own ALL of it…I dont BLAME him, but I think it sucks for MMA fans who just want to see fights, not pay 50 bucks to see the one fight organization manage EVERY fighter.
So when did EA become the good guys? Seriously, they are known for being huge assholes who run rampant through the industry spewing trash and treating workes like crap just to make a buck. Have I missed something here because it wasn’t that long ago that people were hating this company?
Whether this game is good or not doesn’t really change much in terms of the actual sport of MMA. They aren’t part of the org wars on issues with making the sport bigger they are just another company trying to make a quick buck off it’s popularity. It’s not like EA gives a damn about growing the sport, hell if they could snag the UFC contract now they would sell the rest of the sport down the river in a heartbeat.

EA started to turn things around about 2 years ago. It seems they suddenly figured out that if they didn’t just put the same sports games out every year with roster updates and actually treat their employees decently, people would hate them less. I’m betting it was the acquisition of BioWare that flipped the switch…
Looks very arcady
but seems fun. Looks like they’re going with playability over realism, which is going to make it a very different game from Undisputed. Prefer realism personally, but it’s good they are taking different approaches to it
Undisputed? Really shitty gameplay? That’s a bit much.

Never said Undisputed has really shitty gameplay, I was just talking general. But on Undisputes gameplay it’s nigh impossible to submit the computer.

has anyone
seen someone stuff a takedown? I mean if all i have to do is press A to get a takedown and score some points this game is going to have some serious problems. Most of the shoots arent even set up at all and theyre from way too far away. I’ve yet to see anyone block a takedown or reverse it into something
I thought that many of the strikes, especially the GnP, looked very weak, like there was no weight/power behind any of the punches. Jacare looked like he was barely doing any damage to Mayhem and then all of a sudden Miller is KO’d.
I’m definitely going to play the game when it comes out, but that was just the one thing that really stuck out to me. Don’t know if that perceived lack of power will translate to the person actually playing the game though.
But if you are stupid, you will be beaten with a stick - Proverbs 10:13
When did “arcade” become a negative term when describing a video game? I know home video game consoles have made strides over the years but the polygons are the current means and not the end of game development.
“Arcade” normally means a game is simplified in it’s controls and appearance (ie the opposite of realistic). A lot of gamers prefer games that are easy to learn and quick to play at a high level but then there are a lot of gamers that like more realistic and complex games too. It’s not really a “negative” or “positive” it’s just a discription of the style of the game, some people like that and some people don’t.
It depends how the game position itself, if it’s pretending to be a MMA simulation, then any arcade aspect will probably mean they failed. But an arcade oriented MMA game could be cool too, if they manage to still make it look like it’s MMA, but cooler than the actual stuff, while still being balanced.
I'm a lover not a fighter
I really want to like this game...
I was pretty disappointed with UFC Undisputed this year, so I was really hoping that EA would bring it this year, but I’m not feeling it at all. The Live Broadcast feature is an awesome idea, and has a ton of potential, but the actual fighting looks like a complete mixed bag. Some of the ground work looks good, but if you watch the end of the linked fight with Jacare and Miller, after some GnP in the mount it kind of just, ends. No big strike or flurry to end it, Miller just flops his arms out and it goes into it’s post-fight animation. Which is another big knock in my book. No referee in the ring during the fight, and the pre-fight and post-fight animations that transition into/out of fighting just don’t feel real at all, they are way too awkward. Also it seems way too fast on the feet, they are pretty much running around the cage.
I want to be optimistic, because they still have a lot of time to polish the game up a bit, but a lot of my problems with it seem to need more than just a bit of polish.

Im a huge game freak and this looks great. Very smooth with better and more realistic animations, color palette, textures and graphics than UFC’s game. Overall I think EA has done a great job with this and its only their first go at it. Dana’s mad… lol Im glad I didnt pick up Undisputed 10, I still have 09 and its still good IMO. Ill probably alternate buying this one and UFC every year. I dont see why people have to take sides, we should be really happy that MMA is getting so popular that we have choices. 2 years ago we didnt have jack!
Mike Goldberg: "You know Joe, When Matt and his brother Mark Hughes were growing up, they would pound each other behind the barn."
It's interesting to read the different takes on this game
because to me, this looks like a game that is meant to be a “video game fighting experience” and not a “portrayal of real life fighting experience”. Everything seems so rigid and animated, yet other people view the same footage as smooth, flawless, and realistic. Realism isn’t normally subjective, but it has been in regards to this game.
I don’t see where any of the “this game looks incredible” folks are coming from, but I’m very happy that they will have a game that makes them happier than Undisputed. EA will continue to rake in money from me through NHL and Madden, but if the final product looks anything like the gameplay footage in this video, I will certainly not be purchasing it.

It looks like it could have potential
But until I see more footage, get some more mechanics on it and see the various modes (especially for Japanese rules) I have to reserve judgment.
