Martin Kampmann tells MMA Junkie that he wants Dan Hardy at a rumored October event in the UK:
"I'd love to fight Dan Hardy," Kampmann (17-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) said. "I think that would make a great fight. I heard he doesn't have an opponent right now, so that could be a great opportunity."
"I'm going to Denmark here in the summer," said Kampmann, who topped highly regarded Paulo Thiago via unanimous decision this past Saturday at UFC 115 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. "I'm coming back sometime in mid-August, so I'd like to fight preferably again in late October or early November. I heard that's when he's lined up, so if he doesn't have an opponent, that would be a great fight."

that would be a great fight...
but I think Hardy would have the edge there.

What edge?
Based on the Thiago fight, Kampmann has him covered on the ground. He’s much faster than Hardy on the feet and can throw combos before moving out.
I think it's a toss up, but I have a feeling he's getting Daley'd again.

What gives you that impression? I haven’t seen anything from Hardy lately that makes me think he’d be able to handle Kampmann.
Granted I could be overrating Kampmann fresh off his great fight against Thiago but being stopped by Marquardt and Daley isn’t necessarily anything to sneeze at.

True
Hardy does have power but I think he lacks that killer instinct. I might be wrong. I’ve only seen 6 of his fights, but he had Swick rocked a number of times but failed to capitalise.

If Kampmann is able to get this fight to the ground I don’t see Hardy surviving the submission attempts that Thiago did.
Thiago has so much natural talent and heart...
Too bad he won’t quit his day job to train full time. :S
Agreed. I still want to see Thiago in the ring, but he’ll never be a contender if he doesn’t train full time.
I was trying to convince myself otherwise
but after 115, its so apparently true. I’m still a big Paulo fan but he’ll never be a contender unless he trains more MMA and less BOPE.
I was trying to convince myself that he could too...
That said, it is amazing that he is as good as he is without full time training.
I can’t put it all on that though either, Kamp fought one hell of a fight.
So GSP couldn't finish hardy on the ground
So you are suggesting he is done if Kampmann gets him there?

Kampmann goes for more chokes, and GSP did not get in any types of chokes on Hardy. However, it is just a matter of Kampmann getting Hardy down and keeping him down. Hardy showed good takedown defense against Marcus Davis and Mike Swick, but showed almost no attempts at defending the takedown against GSP. I don’t feel at all that Hardy would be done if Kampmann gets him down there though, but Kampmann usually goes for different submissions than GSP did.
Hardy would be wise
to train arm triangle defense. Kampmann LOVES that sub.
If they actually fight, of course.
I would love to watch Kampmann take out Hardy

I'm sorry, but I don't understand that all
While I believe Bisping is given an unfair push over fighters who deserve it more, there hasn’t been a point in his UFC career where he should’ve been cut. Same goes for the rest of the British fighters. Guys who aren’t that great, like Paul Taylor, put on exciting fights that’s greatly appreciated by the UFC top brass.

Paul Daley would disagree with this.

To be honest I still think that’s a little unfair. It wasn’t his nationality that allowed him to hang in there with gsp, it was his ability to fight, that being the reason he’s with the UFC in the first place. This whole “he’s only in this position because he’s British” thing is slightly far fetched. Will people be saying the same when the likes of Etim start to fulfill their potential and begin to rack up wins?

That would be a good fight for a card in Europe.
Hardy’s got the counter striking and power to rough Kampmann up when he comes in, but Kampmann is no slouch on the feet either and is probably better and certainly faster than any of the other guys Hardy has beaten thus far in the UFC (Marcus Davis could be argued). Kampmann definitely has an edge on the ground but Hardy is strong as all hell so I think Kampmann would have a tough time taking him to the ground and keeping it there.
Good competitive match though, and I think Kampmann wants Hardy because he’s one of the few names at the top end of the WW ladder that isn’t a wrestler. Smart move by Kampmann to call out the striker and likely net himself a FOTN bonus in the process.

Mike “QUICK” Swick? no? :P

The nickname was more fitting at 185 when he actually had a speed advantage.
At 170, he’s just Mike “Emaciated” Swick.

Also, I'm pretty sure I meant to say "probably faster and certainly better" for whatever that's worth.

This would be great...
Before the GSP Hardy spent so much time talking about how excellent his striking was. I was hoping we’d see him against Daley to tst that theory, Kampmann is the next best test IMO. Kamp should be faster and is more versatile.
Kamp look great against Thiago. I was very impressed if he wins this fight he deserve to be in discussions for a title shot.
I actually think Kampmann has to be right in the thick of things now. If you get a little four man tournament going with the winner of Kampmann-Hardy facing the winner of Fitch-Alves you could potential see the winner of that fight square off with whoever the champ is at the time.
I wrote winner too much there…

Meant to add that I’d love to see a Condit rematch as well.
by TMadeBurner on Jun 15, 2010 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions
Fair point.
I’d just prefer a fight with Condit and Kampmann because I’m a Condit fan and think he fares better against the less powerful/more technical striking of Kampmann. I have a feeling Thiago would be able to catch Condit with something big at one point or another.
Either fight would work for me though.

i think i'd be a landslide win
we’ve seen what happens when you put brawlers up against kampmann. he f’s them up.
Go big red!
I was amazed that Kampmann didn't go out
Tough S.O.B. how many others could survive that onslaught against Daley?
Even crazier when you see Kampmann's eyes roll back after the last left hook
by Holls Hoyce on Jun 15, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions
I think he may have been punched out an punched back in.
It was a very good stoppage, but even after all that Kamp was still circling to his right away from the punches. That boy has the striking and footwork engrained deep in his brain.
MMA fans only remember a fighter's last fight, you should know this.
Who’s that black guy anyways?

Once again, Dan Hardy is not Paul Daley. He has never shown the power that Daley posseses. Also, I can’t personally say that I’ve ever seen Hardy overwhelm anyone with punches like that, which is how Kampmann has lost both of his UFC fights. To be honest, I have never been particularly impressed with Hardy’s striking, seems like a lot of people on here are basing their opinions on hype from the Primetime series rather than Hardy’s actual skill level
Hardy is a solid boxer...
Just not elite…
Compared to a lot of the loopy punch throwing welterweights though he is very solid.
Off the top of my head I would count GSP, Daley, Alves, Kampmann and Sadollah (although he lacks power) as better technical strikers… Am I missing anybody?
Everyone seems fixated on the striking side of this fight, but if Kampmann has any brains (and is actually fighting smart as he said) he will take Hardy to the ground and work him over. I honestly can’t say we wins a kickboxing match between these two which is a pretty good reason to take Hardy down and get the win.
I was shocked by how well rounded Kampmann was vs. Thiago. The idea that he would kickbox with Daley (his obvious strength) is just asking Kampmann to fight stupid.
I think he went over that a little in the post fight
He was probably too fixated on putting on a show… He seems to have relized the importance of fighting smart and it showed. If he can work his game agianst Hardy, Kamp has the far more diverse skill set. It will be interesting to see. This could truly be a case of a loss that made him stronger.
On paper, I don’t think either fighter is going to dominate the standup, which means Kampmann has lots of time to get this to the ground and won’t be overly urgent with his takedown attempts. That lack of urgency is a good thing imo because it will let him setup the takedown as a counter vs. pretending to be GSP and running for a power double.
I think this would be an easy win for Kampmann.
kampmann just outgrappled paulo thiago who was considered probably the best bjj guy at ww
he dominates hardy on the ground for 3 rounds and gets the decision
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
Great fight
I wonder if he heard the fans asking for it. Hopefully the UFC puts this together.
I see Kampmann controlling the fight on the ground over three rounds, but Hardy was great at totally neutralizing damage from GSP. Standing, it’s a lot more even.
Should be an interesting fight
I think Hardy’s TDD will be decent enough to stuff Kampmann’s takedown attempts, or at least the majority of them. I am actually intrigued to see how his bottom game has improved, he was pinned more-or-less indefinitely by GSP, but Kampmann is no elite wrestler. Martin will probably attempt more submissions and guard passes once the fight hits the mat, but also expose himself to reversals in the process.
Kampmann’s striking style should pose an interesting challenge for Hardy, who will almost definitely want to keep the fight standing.
