"Mormon Influences" Contribute to UFC's Move From Utah to California

Photo

Heavy.com's Jeremy Botter is reporting that the UFC's second show on Versus is being moved from Salt Lake City to San Diego. The August 1st event, which features Jon Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko in the main event, was to mark the promotion's debut in Utah and religion may play a part in the move:

Sources close to the event informed Heavy.com of the switch this morning. An official announcement is expected to be made shortly....Many onlookers had questioned the original plan of holding a UFC event on a Sunday night in Salt Lake City, a city with heavy Mormon influences.

The second show on Versus was originally announced by Dana White soon after the organization's first Versus event as emenating from Oakland, California. Instead, Oakland plays host to UFC 117 on August 7th and Utah is left high and dry.

Utah, at least, will always have one immortal MMA moment. After the break...

[UPDATE from Luke Thomas]: The L.A. Times' Lance Pugmire reports on Twitter:

Dana White says he moved card to San Diego due to poor ticket sales in Utah...

We will try to determine if it's true. Either scenario - pushback from indigenous religious communities or poor ticket sales or poor ticket sales due to religious proclivities, habits - seems plausible on first glance, although the ticket sales would have to be exceptionally poor for such a dramatic move to be made. Historically the UFC has shown some willingness to paper events in cities with relatively lackluster ticket sales, although those events also achieved a baseline ticket sales threshold where papering the remainder of the seats made sense. More to come.

[UPDATE 2 from Luke Thomas] UFC issues a statement on the historic switch:

In a statement released by the organization Monday, UFC president Dana White cited a lack of ticket sales as the main reason the UFC on VERSUS 2 event was being moved.

According to White, it's the first time in the company's history a venue has been changed after tickets already went on sale.

"Our television ratings in Salt Lake City have always been strong," White said. "When we finally found the opportunity to bring a UFC event there with a great card, I was very surprised and disappointed in ticket sales.

"As a result, for the first time in UFC history, I decided to pull the plug and move this August 1st event to the San Diego Sports Arena."

I really hope that nobody on here attacks the mormon faith...

because they are some of the nicest ppl that I have ever met. I am obviously not mormon (the tattoo sleeves should give it away) but I think blaming them would not be right.

Come to Utah and you will see the pushy ones that give it a bad name.

It is highly frowned upon in my neighborhood that I am no longer a Mormon. They looked down on me when I was young because my parents were divorced.

But I will say this: the nicest people I have ever met in my life are Mormons, but not all of them are.

This.

coming from a staunch atheist dating a beautiful, and faithful, Mormon girl. I like her and her whole family very much.

That said, there are bad apples in every bunch. They just tend to congregate around…congregations. Usually leading them.

Where’s Joe Rogan when I need him? someone call him, he’ll know what’s up.

by saaby on Jun 14, 2010 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m Mormon and a hardcore MMA fan. If I was living in Salt Lake city or if UFC comes to my town I’m going on one condition. It’s isn’t on Sunday. That’s a deal breaker for me. I don’t go out and do stuff on Sunday. I strongly suspect that that this is the reason the ticket sales didn’t work.

And for the record, Mormons don’t tend to culturally disdain violence. Sort of the opposite really. They love guns and hunting and ammo etc. The religion however advocates peace and love, the people still don’t mind a bit of gore.

by Dooda on Jun 15, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems like absolute madness that they would book it for a Sunday in SLC. It’s not even as though they normally have fights on Sundays. Clearly someone at Zuffa dropped the ball.

by HarmlessNinja on Jun 15, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

You started out so well and then succumbed. Usually the people leading congregations (bishops) are the most awesome of the bunch. I’ve had friends who were going through things that were severely looked down upon by the culture (homosexuality etc) and the bishops were amazingly understanding. I’ve had my own serious issues (cheating on my wife) and the bishop that counselled me through it and back into the fold was remarkably understanding and helpful. He wasn’t judgemental, he didn’t make me feel guilty, he just helped me through it. There are some bad Bishops, but I’ve heard nothing but good things from people going through this type of thing.

by Dooda on Jun 15, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I've met some very nice Mormons

and I had a friend who grew up in a Mormon family that was highly abusive (her father is now in jail).

Just like any other religion, there are some good folks and bad ones…and I don’t think moving this event has much to do with the prevalent religion in the area…though perhaps Sunday night was not a good choice.

Nothing in the original article suggests...

…that the UFC is moving the event as a result of Mormon pressure. It may turn out that this is eventually the case, but I think Snowden is being a little irresponsible with his interpretation of the Heavy article.

No pressure by Mormon faith

There are at least two MMA companies that put fights on all the time in large arenas as the ESA where the Jazz play and a slightly smaller arena 8k that gets good crowds. It is because the mormon faith does not go out on Sundays. That is the reason. There are a ton of MMA fans in Utah.

You guys sound worse than Senator McCain trying to talk MMA back ion the 90’s. Obviously you don’t know much about Mormons or MMA as a business. Holding the event on a Sunday at such a big arena would’ve been disaster. Hold it on any other day of the week and it would’ve done great. BTW, Court McGee and Josh Burkman are both mormon.

by dollargalt on Jun 14, 2010 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

i dont know about burkman

But Court McGee is definetely not. He stated that his wife and her family are, but he is not.

Mormons have very interesting beliefs. I am not going to bash them because i have my own personal beliefs about God so i respect their right to their own,
BUT i do have to say that its nothing short of amazing that Joseph Smith actually has 13 million followers world wide when looking where he started out. I dont agree with it but it blows my mind when i think about it

by bluejitz on Jun 14, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

They definitely are screwy, but...

My personal beliefs are that all religions are wrong. I won’t bash someone for being religous and I want the same respect given to me for not having a religion. Mormons can’t accept this and this is why I dislike them more than any other religion. And I am also not Atheist either. I have no ties to any religion.

For sure...It's like I said in the other post

I don’t disrespect their religion yet they disrespect my lack of religion. And my neighborhood sucks. (Obviously, since you know the types I’m talking about) But my mom is really cool about it. My older brother that went on a mission isn’t on the other hand.

He gave me a Book of Mormon for Christmas one year that had a personal message to me on the inside that was him basically telling me that since I am not Mormon anymore that I am going nowhere in life. The funny part of that is that I am more successful professionally than him.

Since my mom and dad were divorced they already looked down on us since we were the only family in the neighborhood that had a single parent.

I understand why they can be mad, but they need to learn to respect other people’s choices. I’ve had way too many instances of the church leaders trying to pressure me back in. They were borderline trying to strong arm me back in. I almost told the guy to “Fuck Off” but I held back.

obviously u guys know more than me so i have a question

my knowledge of mormonism is strictly from a couple i know at school so i may be wrong here, but i thought that mormons aren’t allowed to really partake in any activities outside of church on sundays. as in they can’t even buy things or go out somewhere to eat. with the versus event being on a sunday, wouldn’t this stop a lot of mormons in the area from attending the event, regardless of whether or not they were interested in it? this would explain the good television ratings from the area, but lack of sales for the event

by kanginator10 on Jun 14, 2010 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, you are correct...

They believe that Sunday is a day of rest and that nothing should be done on that day.

If you come to Utah you would understand better. The place is almost a ghost town on Sundays. That is actually my favorite part of Utah.

Trust me, there is plenty of interest for MMA in Utah, but putting it on Sunday was a ridiculous idea, and whoever thought of it should be kicked in the nuts and fired.

Any other day of the week and we would sell out Energy Solutions Arena.

by logic_101 on Jun 14, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Well the way i was taught its

You arent supposed to cause someone to work on sunday so buying things would be having people work its like that.

But a lot of Mormons will go to sports game and stuff. But Utah is where you cant go anywhere without seeing another Mormon so its ghost townish.

But here in NC where im at Mormons will have barb qs and stuff. Its not as strict.

I just always get questions from people about explaining that so I didn’t want to try. A “good” Mormon shouldn’t go to a sports game on a Sunday because it causes the people at the stadium to work.

Also, I have been told that family get togethers such as bbq’s and birthday partys are ok.

I think its 2 or 3 years the Person/ gets when he turns 16 or 18 some age around there to go out into the real world and see if its for them or not .total freedom to make there own choices. Then at the age of 18 or 21when the time period is over they have to make a choice if they want to be part of the community/religion or not.

I'm from SLC as well...

I’m bummed because I can’t make the trip to San Diego for this.

So excited and then a complete let down. But I will say this:

Whoever at Zuffa thought it would be a good idea to come to Utah on a Sunday should be kicked in the nuts.

Regarding the update

Poor ticket sales and resistance from the Mormon community go hand in hand. I believe it was scheduled on a Sunday and Mormons don’t do anything on Sunday. They won’t even let BYU play in the NCAA tournament on a Sunday the last I checked.

Internally

They are saying it is because it is a Sunday.

What a surprise...

They should fire whoever though it was going to be a good idea to come on a Sunday to Utah. Nothing happens on Sundays here.

The UFC should still go to SLC

Just not on a Sunday. Seems fairly obvious.

+1 for that...

I’m from Utah and am pissed that they moved it, but they must have had their heads way up their asses to believe that the ticket sales would do good on a Sunday event in Utah.

Went to a mall or shopping center in SLC on a Sunday in the middle of the afternoon needless to say I was terribly alone. Imagine if Brock was half Tongan

by Bob Boblaw on Jun 14, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

That is 1 thing I love about Utah...

If you aren’t a Mormon then you have tons to do on Sundays and no annoying people in your way. It feels like a ghost town on Sundays. It was even better for me when I was a skateboarder. Any skate spot was easy to skate on Sundays because everyone is either home or in church.

Shouldn't be too surprising

about poor ticket sales. This card is really weak in terms of casual fanbase and even a lot of hardcores couldn’t care less about this one.

by Geno Mrosko on Jun 14, 2010 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

Anyone who doesn’t care about a Jon Jones fight isn’t a hardcore. Anyone who doesn’t care about Munoz vs Okami isn’t hardcore. Hell, a hardcore should even know that John Howard vs Jake Ellenberger is a great fight. Man, even Gomi is on the card!

If someone actually knows this sport and isn’t interested in this card, i gotta question whether or not they’re actually a fan.

by Goonisis on Jun 14, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

You would be surprised

how many friends I have that say how much they love the sport and don’t have a fucking clue who any of these people are. I end up being the guy who has to educate people. Everytime a buddy of mine asks me who Jon Jones is I shake my head and try to make them understand what they are missing.

Native Utahn here

Just when I was getting over the idea of not seeing Liddell in the octagon anymore, and now this. There is a share of the population here that may not have chosen to attend the event because of their religious beliefs, however, as it was mentioned above Josh Burkman and Court McGee are both from Utah as well as a number of other fighters and tons of fans of the sport. There are several local promotions that do well here and the fans are hungry for more. I was excited to hear that the UFC was hosting an event here. That quickly changed when I heard the main event was going to be a gimme for Jon Jones. Vladimir has won his last 3 fights by decision and lost the one before that. Give us something that is worth watching!

I'm a native Utahn as well...

and I was surprised by their decision to place the event on a Sunday. I said it in an earlier comment and I’ll say it again:

you’re saying they shouldn’t have the event on sunday?

Even if mormon influences were the reason for the move the UFC would never admit it. it would end up giving them trouble in other regions if the prominent religion there thought they could bully them out of the region

by 19Miles on Jun 14, 2010 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

Hard to believe

the UFC could actually book this event without considering the Mormon culture.

Yeah, let’s book a combat sports event on a Sunday in Mormon territory, good idea.

UFC in SLC

I am from Salt Lake as well I work on an MMA radio show and they were skeptical of having it on Sunday, and blaming Dana White for not doing his research. Also, I am not a huge follower of the sport but has there ever been a Sunday event?

Also, the move seemed premature since the event is still 7 weeks away, there is a huge MMA fan base in Utah. The Sunday event would deter some from going, but had it been a Saturday attendance would not have been a problem.

There have been local fights at the Energy Solutions arena that had 11k, so I have to put the blame on Dana White for not doing his research, and it is sad because this experience may never land Utah an MMA event again.

Mormons simply don’t do stuff like this on Sunday. At least the large majority of them don’t. On Saturday this wouldn’t have happened I think.

Also, Mormons are notoriously cheap. Might have something to do with it.
