One of the most action packed heavyweight fights in UFC history saw Ben Rothwell edge out Gilbert "the Hurricane" Yvel by unanimous decision.

Two heavyweights hanging on by their fingernails to their place at the bottom of the UFC ladder, Ben Rothwell and Gilbert Yvel faced high stakes coming into this fight. Both men made their bones in other organizations -- Yvel in the legendary PRIDE and Rothwell in the ill-fated IFL.

Rothwell stormed out and tagged Gilbert Yvel. But Yvel fought through and landed some shots of his own before Rothwell shot in and took Yvel down. Gilbert fought for a guillotine but Rothwells avoided it and got mount. Yvel quickly reversed him and attacked from the top. Rothwell defended and got back up then took Yvel down again. He quickly passed to side mount and scored from the top. Big Ben flirted with a kimura on Yvel's right arm then worked for mount. Rothwell worked for crucifix and Yvel reversed. But Rothwell quickly seized another take down and got mount. Yvel spun free and went for an ill-advised leg attack. Rothwell regained control and again worked for the crucifix. Yvel tried to roll him but failed . Then he succeeded and took Rothwell's back. Rothwell stood up and they traded punches, kicks and knees with Yvel probably getting the better of it. He stunned Rothwell with a kick to the head. But Rothwell counters with knees. One of the best rounds of heavyweight action I've ever seen.

Rothwell shot in following some punches and got a double leg take down. Yvel threw his legs up for a triangle but didn't have the necessary explosiveness to pull it off. Rothwell got side mount but Yvel got half guard. Rothwell got mount and Yvel almost reversed him again. But in a very nice sequence Rothwell held onto top position. Then began to really score on Yvel with punches and elbows from the top. Yvel got back up via a beautiful Americana sweep. Although he ate some punches going up. Rothwell got a double leg and back to side mount. Then Yvel reversed and began landing BRUTAL punches from the top position. Rothwell struggled to get half guard. Then he fought back to his feet and got a double leg. Great fight! Rothwell got mount and landed some shots of his own.

Yvel shot in for a take down but got stuffed and Rothwell landed on top. Yvel went for a triangle that allowed Rothwell to pass. Yvel went for a triangle but ate elbows. Rothwell went for a crucifix. Then mount. Yvel pushed him up and got half guard. Rothwell worked the body as Yvel took full guard. Rothwell escaped, got side mount and attacked with an Americana attempt of his own. Rothwell landed hard elbows and then got crucifix and landed hard punches to Yvel's face. Then elbows. Yvel got his arm free. But Rothwell held control. Rothwell battered away as the round and the fight wore away.
