Quote of the Day: Ken Shamrock Admits Steroid Use, Blames Fans

Who knew?

"(The fans) want home runs, baby. They want people jacking them out of the park. But then when they find out about it they want to stick their heads in the sand and say, 'How bad, that was stupid, you're crazy, don't let him in the hall of fame.' It's like let's point the finger. ... Nobody wants to take responsibility, but everyone wants to see it."

Ken Shamrock talking to HDNet's Mike Straka.

What an idiot...

Fans want to see legitimate home runs. They want to see how far athletes can push themselves without cheating. It makes a broken record that much more worthwhile.

by olimario on Jun 12, 2010 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

no, honestly fans don’t care… they just don’t want to know about the steroid use.

by kanodogg on Jun 12, 2010 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

WRONG

Fans want to see the best, be the best they can be period. They want the people they are competing against to be the best they can be.

That makes for good sport. We want to see the big shot, the big KOs, and everything else exciting about sports, but we don’t want them to defraud their competitors while they do it. If Steroids were legal across the board, I wouldn’t really like it, but I’d be ok with it cause it would be a level playing field.

No love for Ken

I hope this doesn’t cross the line into fighter bashing but Ken Shamrock has always seemed like kind of a jerk to me.

It’s easy for him to get on camera, be all honest and start making excuses, AFTER he go busted. Ken Shamrock seriously needs to go away before he destroys what little is left of his credibility and his image.

by Worldisart on Jun 12, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s sad because I think with the right people behind him Ken Shamrock could have been a permanent fixture in MMA or the UFC

by Bob Boblaw on Jun 12, 2010 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

There isn’t much left, and hasn’t been for some time. I only have a perverse curiosity to watch him fight his brother. It’s a win-win situation watching one of them lose.

LASIK surgery for 20/20 vision- not cheating. Steroids to help muscles recover- cheating. Pine tar, stealing signals, home run friendly parks – part of the game. HGh – Cheating!!!! Let’s not pretend that there’s something so pure and noble about sports that it’s completely destroyed by PED use.

by Ironbuddha on Jun 12, 2010 5:22 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

But those things you mentioned first did not break any government laws, and stealing signals isn’t illegal under the rules of baseball so its not cheating.

And regarding home run friendly parks and tightly-coiled twine in baseballs, that’s why you use something like wOBA or OPS+ to evaluate hitters rather than just pure counting stats.

by kellemonster on Jun 12, 2010 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The point is whats “cheating” and whats not is arbitrary.

Plenty of things that enhance performance are considered off limits (like blood doping for instance) can be achieved through other means (training at altitude). Why is one illegal but the other isn’t even though they do the same things?

Ricky Hatton came closer to beating Manny Pacquiao than Marquez did to beating Floyd.

Not sure Ken's ever hit a home run

The only exciting fights he’s been in are the ones where he lost. Admitting it is cool, blaming it on other people – lie Ken seems to do with everything – is not.

by CaptainArmbar on Jun 12, 2010 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

let's not go overboard

Ken’s wins over Pat Smith (UFC 1), Dan Severn (UFC 6) and Kimo Leopoldo (UFC 8) were wonderful examples of the effectiveness of submissions. Let’s not forget the man introduced ankle locks and guillotines to the UFC.
At the same time some of his fights were the most boring godawful nightmares ever — Ken vs Royce 2, Ken vs Severn 2, Ken vs Oleg Taktarov.
Then there was his epic war with Don Frye in PRIDE. Now there’s a fight that wouldn’t have happened without PEDs and Frye is probably the one abusing them the most — ie without tons of painkillers he would’ve tapped when Ken broke both his ankles.

by Kid Nate on Jun 12, 2010 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn't he start taking painkillers

AFTER Shamrock destroyed his ankles?

Also, since when were painkillers illegal in any sport?

If you have a prescription it’s fine, but after the Shamrock fight Frye started popping them like candy.

by Electro Boy on Jun 12, 2010 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Does not matter if you have a prescription or not if it’s on the banned substance list, in the states at least and the UK according to Leben. Trust me if I had 60mg of some sweet sweet Afghany bam bam I would still get owned in a cage don’t get me wrong but the opiates would help make it a three minute fight instead of one.

by Bob Boblaw on Jun 12, 2010 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

he was clearly doped to the gills

or those locks would’ve stopped him.
and preventing fighters from being on painkillers during a fight is one of the only reasons i support drug testing. too dangerous.

by Kid Nate on Jun 12, 2010 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

You can get a prescription for most anything, including steroids but that doesn’t have anything to do with the banned substance list. You can’t have painkillers (prescription or otherwise) in your system during a fight.

by nsiegel on Jun 12, 2010 6:14 PM EDT reply actions

While yes fans want to see their heroes look and act superhuman it’s not like any fan ever forced Ken Shamrock to become a fighter/pro wrestler and chase that fame and glory. Ken did what he did because he wanted to be a superstar not because anyone forced him to do it.

Blaming other people, well, that shows character too. Thanks for confirming what we already suspected Ken. Keep it Klassy.

Ken

I think most people are apathetic. Nobody cares dude. This isn’t shocking to us. You might catch some flack from some uptight fans, but it is what it is. No need to cry about it.

I was never fan of Shamrock but he was once the best fighter in the world. IMO I’m less worried about steroids and more worried about how many of your fights were works, because you just never know.

“Worked” or “fixed” fights are a much bigger concern than illegal PEDs imo. I don’t EVER want to have that question in the back of my mind of whether or not the fight was legit.

by kenpoboy67 on Jun 12, 2010 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with that. Stopping the BS is the first step. But if he really wants credit then he should start naming names. That is how all the other sports got cleaned up. Weasels selling each other out. By moving onto cheer leading for steroids for all, he completely undid the credit I was ready to give him for coming clean.

Those decisions should be made by competent medical organizations. Not the fighters. HDNet should be ashamed of them selves for going to to say that every one should be able to take steroids. That was disgusting and sends the wrong message to kids.

Admitting something everyone knows doesn’t make you some kind of hero.

by Worldisart on Jun 12, 2010 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea after you have got caught red handed with them in your system it’s really not worth all that much to admit to it, particularly when you try to blame your use on the fans at the same time. It’s sort of like admitting you have been drinking after you failed the breathalyzer test and then blaming the bar for being open at night.

No kidding, Ken Shamrock? I'm shocked.

Next you’ll be telling me that Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Royce Gracie, Vitor Belfort, Hermes Franca, Kimo Leopold, Sean Sherk, Nate Marquardt, Stephan Bonnar and Tim Sylvia have used steroids at some point in their careers..

It’s pretty normal for people to be a little bit delusional. My nephew was messing around on the metro and got his arm caught in the train and tried to state his case that it was the train’s fault. He was being sincere, he didn’t want to fess up to being an idiot.

Ken’s delusion is damned near worse than a parody. It’s like someone standing there trying to tell you that the sky isn’t blue, and the sun only comes up a couple times a month. He sees people cheering for people he knows are users, and faults them for doing so, not considering the fact that they don’t know whether or not they’re cheering for them. The guy needs therapy in a really big way. He walks around thinking he’s mr clever. In reality, the guy is a neurotic basketcase that is 100% miserable. Guaranteed.
