UFC 115 Preview: Paulo Thiago, Martin Kampmann Meet in Crucial Welterweight Confrontation
The most appealing fight of the evening has to be the welterweight clash between special police forces' officer and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Paulo Thiago (13-1, 3-1 UFC) and Danish kickboxer and legitimate ground threat Martin Kampmann (16-3, 8-2 UFC). Not only is the match-up a solid test for both fighters in terms of styles, but the fight could determine who will move up in the ranks far enough to be matched in a contention bout next. Thiago has the most solid case as he's defeated Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, and Jacob Volkmann in his UFC career with his lone loss coming against Jon Fitch at UFC 100. Kampmann's recent run was abruptly stopped at UFC 103 when he was knocked out by Paul Daley, but he did manage to defeat Jacob Volkmann at UFC 108 in quick fashion via guillotine choke.
While there is a possibility that the winner really puts himself into prime position for a run toward the top, my own attraction sits on how this fight will play out in what we could call an evenly-matched bout between well-rounded combatants. Thiago's boxing has improved immensely to the point in which I've found myself surprised in his learning ability and determination in correcting past problems that have plagued his form. Kampmann's ground tactics continue to get him out of tough situations, and it's improved to a point where he's positionally solid in his control and form.
Kampmann's striking is going to be the question, and while he hails from a region in the world that's notorious for kickboxers -- Kampmann hasn't shown the crisp kickboxing of a K-1 veteran. He doesn't loop his overhands horribly all of the time, but he tends to tire and fall into the mold. His defense is lacking, and that's probably one of the most consistent criticisms of his stand-up game.
Thiago, on the other hand, looked sloppy in his battle with Josh Koscheck, but a perfectly-placed uppercut downed the AKA veteran. Jon Fitch didn't give him the opportunity to punch, but Thiago did show some wizardry in his grappling skills. Jacob Volkmann and Mike Swick were victims of an ever-improving arsenal of strikes that Thiago has been molding. Crisp, straight punches that landed accurately, and Swick was the recipient of the follow-up of submission knowledge from Thiago's Brazilian jiu-jitsu background while Volkmann held off Thiago long enough to lose via judges' decision.
On the ground, I think Paulo is hands down a better fighter. We haven't seen a whole lot of Thiago off his back in recent memory, but the Jon Fitch fight is a good example of looking at the potential that is there. Thiago was able to work in some great reversals of position, but Fitch's wrestling was too much. Kampmann is a crafty ground fighter, but Paulo's black belt-level skill will trump anything Kampmann can muster.
I also think Thiago has that mental edge as a fight in the Octagon is probably a safer reality than his every day job of hunting drug lords in Brazil. I don't want to take anything away from Kampmann, but very few in this sport have a day job that is more dangerous or unnerving than Paulo Thiago. It surely must help him maintain composure in the heat of battle, and that's a plus.
In the end, I think some fans will be a bit surprised at the progression of Paulo Thiago. He's certainly rode the roller coaster in the UFC with an upset victory over Koscheck, a standard loss to a blanketing wrestler in Jon Fitch, and two subsequent wins that earned him some much deserved accolades. I think he's going to put on a good performance and make a claim as to being the next man to fight for contention.

This is easily the most anticipated fight of the night for hardcore fans
Not take away from the rest of the card but this is a pretty evenly matched fight between 2 guys on the cusp of a title shot and winner will no doubtedly get the winner of Alves/Fitch for the next shot at GSP. I agree with the assessment of Thiago…he’s really coming into his own and he’s going to put it all together in this fight and make an example of a very game Kampmann.
"To me, MMA is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography and the dancers hit each other."
If Thiago wins I’d like to see him against Thiago or Fitch, if Kampmann wins…not so much, it was questionable enough when the guy was in the running for a title match before. Then again if Fitch wins I don’t think he should have to fight anybody else other than GSP anyway.

Agreed. If Paulo wins, I want to see him vs. Alves for the #1 contender spot – and the next shot at the GSP-Koscheck winner.

I don't love the guy
I mean, I Iike him as a friend and all, but seriously whether the guy fights teammates or puts on exciting fights if he beats Thiago he will deserve a title shot more defintively then anybody else that for another guy to get a shot before him would be criminal even if we all know what the outcome of a second meeting with GSP would look like, to be fair we pretty much know what any meeting with GSP will look like for any contender. Alves on the other hand of course wouldn’t have done enough to deserve the rematch just yet so it would make perfect sense for him to go up against the winner of this fight.

i got thiago in this one
i think he takes this then welcomes jake shields to the UFC for the #1 contender fight
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
shields already earned that shot by beating the #2 middle weight in the world. imho
Sheilds should get an immediate shot. He hasn’t lost since 04’, and he is on a few p4p lists, plus they could work the champ vs. Champ angle. Gsp needs all challengers he can get.I hope they don’t wast shields or the person he would be in an eliminator with.

yea but better fighters than shields havent gotten immediate shots
cro cop came in after winning the open weight grand prix and didnt get a shot, and gsp is sidelined till december so he wouldnt be fighting shields till next march at the earliest

I don’t believe Thiago has the advantage on the ground. Kampman is very good, and very crafty. He’s got good positional grappling and rarely gets himself in trouble. The grappling exchanges in his fight with Condit were fantastic.
I do agree that Kampman’s defensive striking is his weak point. Offensively, he’s improved though, and smashed Volkman on the feet – more impressively than Thiago did.
I think this is a great, evenly matched fight.
I think it’s that free wielding lack of defense that gonna get him ktfo in the fight, he could pull that off against Volkman but Thiago is a different animal.

Could be. I could see this being a standup war, or I could see it taking place on the ground. Kampman has the better wrestling, so I am interested to see what is gameplan is – does he want to strike or go for TDs? Can he keep from getting clipped?

Don't understimate Kampmann
That was an early stoppage against Daley. He could easily have recovered and ground out a 29-28 win. Hardcharger’s right that Kampmann looked better against Volkman than Thiago did.
All in all a good fight – the winner of which arguably has as good a claim to fight GSP as anyone.
No offense
but are you serious about the Kampmann recovering against Daley part, cause he was about a good 3 seconds away from losing 88% of his childhood memories.

That wasn’t an early stoppage. The round was only half-over, and Kampmann was stumbling around, barely putting up a defense. Sure, had he dropped, it would have been more a more definitive ending , but under Daley’s attack, he wasn’t recovering.

Early stoppage? Really?
Just because a fighter doesn’t fall flat on his face and start convulsing, doesn’t mean it’s an early stoppage.
Would you prefer Kampmann be brain-dead?

I respect your opinion
.. and the ref has to protect him, but he was still on his feet and was defending himself. He raised his hands to cover his face.

It is simply destiny
Paulo Thiago will win.
Thiago Alves will win.
Thiago Thiago will be signed by the UFC.
UFC 120: Thiago
Paulo Thiago vs. Thiago Alves
Thiago Silva vs. Anderson Silva
Thiago Thiago vs. Himself (There’s a rule that there can only be 2 thiagos fighting at any one time.)

Thiago Tavares feels left out
"Ten more seconds is all I ever ask. That's the good thing I learned about being KO'd twice. You don't see it coming -it's like death- you don't plan for it so don't wait for it. So many people are afraid of getting Ko'd that their hands stay home, but not me. I got to go out there and shoot the lights out and fall down" Jens Pulver

HOW DID I FORGET THIAGO TAVARES?!?!?!
thats ok…I think if any more thiago’s are added to the card my head will explode. Please reference exploding head gif below.
I could imagine Goldberg mixing them all up too:
Goldberg: You know Joe, Paulo Thiago really looked sloppy against Machida. Do you think he can take on Anderson Silva?
Joe Rogan:…what the fuck are you talking about?

And the UFC will sign...
Renato Tavares to take on Tavares Thiago
Brad Tavares can fight new signee Shawn Tavares
Wanderlei Silva can fight returning vetran Jay Silva and the winner could fight Paulo Filho
Joao Paulo can rematch Valdines Silva or Chicao Silva
Dana make it happen!!!

I'd also like rematches between
Clay Guida and Clay Guidiolla
and
Chris Lytle and Beaver “Beaver” Beaver
Add Mike Russow vs. Fat Guy to the card as well.

I wonder what went through Chris Lytle’s head when his manager was like “You’re going to fight Beaver beaver beaver beaver beaver beaver…”

Kampmann is being slept on big time by the "hardcore crowd" this fight supposedly appeals to.
Both of his UFC losses are to guys with a ton of power that could pressure him in the stand-up game without too much concern for being taken down. Paulo Thiago doesn’t have the size, strength, or power of Marquardt or Daley, so I think this is going to be a close decision either way.

Koshcheck and Swick heartily disagree with this statement:
“Paulo Thiago doesn’t have the strength or power”
by Body Triangle on Jun 11, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Way to cut off the part of the quote that was important.
He doesn’t have the strength or power of Marquardt or Daley, which even you should be able to see is quite clearly true. Marquardt is a giant at 185 and Daley is known for being one of the hardest hitting power punchers in the sport, Thiago doesn’t have that kind of strength or firepower on his side.

yeah you're right
sorry about that…i actually stopped reading. apologies again.
While you are 100% correct, let me just add that Thiago may not have Middleweight or Semtex power, the Brazilian’s got some serious power in his hands. Cuz it sure as hell isn’t his technique.
by Body Triangle on Jun 11, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe it wasn’t in the Kos fight, but his technique in the Swick and Volkmann fights was pretty solid. I just think MMA fans as a whole have very short memories – Kampmann has a solid chin and it wasn’t that long ago that Thiago went the distance with Volkmann without really hurting him once. Thiago has power but not the kind that’s going to make Kampmann wilt, and vice versa – hence why I see this going to a decision.

He does have some power. But I was impressed with how Kampman hurt Volkman really badly with strikes on multiple occasions.
And Kampman was able to take quite a few hard shots from McFederies when they fought without being dropped or KOed, so his chin isn’t weak or anything.
by Hardcharger on Jun 11, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions
that fight was awesome
I’m not questioning The Hitman’s chin, I’m just saying that Paulo hits really, really hard. Maybe he’ll knock him down and GNP him to a TKO, or transition to a slick submission. I just don’t see Kampmann doing anything to threaten Thiago. If Kampmann wins its by a methodical decision.

Thiago isn't exactly going to throw hands to get countered like that. He had some NICE setups against Swick.
Forget the counter, look at his defense; Volkman tagged him 3 times with this thing he calls punches.

Kampmann
has great offense and very poor defense. Like many mixed martial artists he doesn’t make you miss at all.
Way too many guys block punches with their chin.
Go watch any Kampmann, Thiago Silva or Luiz Cane fight and you’ll notice their opponents land close to 100% of their punches.
