Bellator XXI - Live Results and Commentary

via www.bellator.com

As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for Bellator XXI.  The live blog will start with the beginning of the FSN broadcast (at 8PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.

So again, join us for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.

A note: Results are below the fold.  Please be aware that while I'll not spoil the live results on the front page, we will not be waiting to talk about the results on the front page.  There will likely be multiple articles on the night's action up by tomorrow.

Star-divide

Mike Hayes vs. Steve Banks - Round 1 -Hayes trying to circle while the bigger man stalks him.  Big leg kick from Banks.   Banks with some bully moves to push Hayes around and do a little damage with a right hand.  Hayes coming up short with the right hand.  More leg kicks from Banks.  Hayes is having a lot of trouble with the size here. Banks keeps going back to the leg kicks and now misses with the head kick.  Banks just keeps landing the leg kicks and Hayes can't really get the right range to land his hands.  Finally a right hand from Hayes as the round ends.  10-9 Banks on my card.  Round 2 - Hayes finally lands a nice left hand early in the second round.  Hayes is doing a much nicer job getting inside this round but Banks is doing some work in the clinch.  Big leg kick from Banks seemed to bother Hayes.  Banks just keeps going back to the leg, it's very good work but he's starting to gas now.  Banks went for a takedown but couldn't finish it. Hayes landing a nice flurry here and Banks is too tired to do anything to defend.  Hayes drives through a takedown and he's on top now.  Banks is avoiding punishment so far.  The round ends right as Hayes gets to mount.  10-9 round for Hayes and I've got it even going into the third with Banks badly gassing.  Round 3 - Head kick lands for Banks.  Leg kick now.  Right hand for Hayes.  More work to the legs by Banks but Hayes lands two solid punches.  Solid right hand for Hayes and a few body shots to follow.  Banks with a nice elbow from the clinch.  Hayes is controlling the positioning of the round so far and that's probably got him ahead halfway through the round.  Flurry of punches from Hayes now.  Right hand by Banks.  Hayes with a takedown now with a little over a minute left in the fight.  The round ends and it was 10-9 Hayes for a rather disappointing 29-28 win on my scorecard.  Official Scorecards: 29-28 across the board for Mike Hayes.  Mike Hayes wins by unanimous decision.

Megumi Fujii vs. Sarah Schneider - Round 1 - Left hand from Schneider lands but not hard.  Now Fujii with the takedown.  Body triangle from Schneider from the bottom.  Fujii picks her up and slams her back down and the ref stands them up.  Flurry of punches from Fujii and then Sarah tries a spinning backfist and Fujii dives under for the takedown.  Now to mount.  Schneider manages to survive back into guard.  Schneider back to the body triangle and Fujii beats her up a little to get it released.  The round ends and it was a pretty clear 10-9 Fujii round.  Round 2- Schneider tries to take the back and get a choke in but Fujii ends up on top in her guard.  Big punches from Fujii and she keeps working.  Ref stands them up, and they go right back to the ground.  Fujii spending the entire round on top doing a little damage and getting yelled at by the ref for not working enough.  10-9 Fujii.  Round 3- Schneider throws some punches early but nothing much comes of it.  Takedown from Fujii.  Fujii in side control and now full mount.  The ref tells her to work pretty much the second she gets mount.  Fujii wins by TKO after unloading punch after punch with Schneider unable to escape.  Megumi Fujii wins by TKO (punches), round 3.

Pat Curran vs. Toby Imada - Round 1 - Leg kicks early from Curran.  Right hand counter by Imada.  Right hand by Curran and now a few punches in return from Imada.  Imada pushes him against the cage now and he's looking to get it to the ground.  Imada working knees to the body and leg from the clinch.  Inside trip by Imada and Curran scrambles back to standing.  More knees to the legs in the clinch by Imada.  Left hook from Curran spins Imada and now they're back to distance.  The round ends and I'd probably give it to Imada based on control.  Round 2 - Hard two punch combo early for Curran.  Now a good body kick.  Again Imada with a takedown and again Curran just stands right back up. They're clinched up against the cage again and Imada is going back to the knees to the legs.  The ref restarts them and Imada continues trying to push forward.  Both men landing leg kicks now.  Right hand lands for Curran.  Nice leg kick from Curran.  Right hand lands for Imada and now a combination.  10-9 Imada again.  Curran needs to finish to win on my card.  Round 3 - Imada continues to force him to walk backward which is throwing Curran off.  Right hand lands har for Imada.  Right hand lands for Curran on the inside but for some reason Curran doesn't follow up.  Imada is cut now.  Imada shoots in and can't get the takedown.  Curran keeps going backward, he can't win the fight like this.  Imada with a head kick.  Curran is giving the fight away here as he has his opponent cut and is being the passive fighter.  Takedown from Imada with 20 seconds left and that should do it.  The round ends and I have it 30-27 Imada.  Official Scorecards: 29-28 Curran, 29-28 Imada, 29-28 Curran.  Pat Curran wins by split decision.  That ranks among the worst decisions I have ever seen in my life.  That is so ungodly bad I have no words.

But I see Imada getting caught with a sneaky overhand right once again. Curran has the takedown defense to stay out of trouble…I hope.

It would suck if the fist time I pick the guy, he then goes off an gets put away.

Word Beer Monster, Bellator has spoiled us with free weekly mma lol.

I’m so pumped for this fight, I became a fan of “Coqui” Curran from the moment I saw him fight the kid has the look and the skills to be a star. Hopefully Big Frog has been teaching him sub defense, because Imada will go all out to get him in something and if he can defend against that he has a good chance to win.

Let's hope no grotesque injuries tonight

seriously though, wtf took so long for everyone to notice?

I noticed it immediately, how could you miss it?

Not to mention it buckled a few more times after that and looked all jacked up. His lower leg wasn’t even aligned with his upper leg.

Dude is tough, kept on fighting. Being on his back wasn’t really a bad thing.

Ref needed to be a little more observant, a few more seconds and we might have had an Anton Lubchenko moment in the cage.

Even the commentators didn’t see it.

He also said Imada was up 20-18 on his unofficial scorecard going into the 3rd round, so you already know he thought Imada won.

Well, well, well people

Looks like Patt Curran knew what he was doing after all, keep backing up long enough to avoid doing much and then sit back and enjoy the hometown decision.

And that’s why you people aren’t professional fighters.

So there is indeed attention paid to pronouncing the 2nd i. They are almost saying it right, but they are adding a little too much emphasis in their effort to say it correctly.

Don’t even get me started on the Western pronunciation of Dokonjonosuke Mishima.

With all the talk of “funky” striking and “funky” submissions they left out Curran’s ultimate weapon, “funky” decisions.

I do remember that as clear as day milk72. Boy I probably can’t even think of 1/100 of them right now but boy did Pride have some real real bad classic decisions. Some that were just clear judge favoritism based on nothing but fighter popularity.

Another Rampage fight I think he lost it was not a robbery. It was a close fight but I had him loosing it was Rampage vs Lindland .

Also I know its not going to happen but I hope Bellator has learned its lesson on not having a HW tournament next year buy this fight tonight. All the top HW’s in MMA are under contract with other rogs mostly Zuffa and Strike Force and it is buy far the least talented devison in all of MMA. I can see it being nothing but a ratings sinker and a bore and Boo fest for the crowd. Please Just stick to doing one off HW fights on cards every now and then.A HW tournament is just a nightmare waiting to happen.

by Shocbomb on Jun 10, 2010 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

If they do one they have to spread it out. they can’t put multiple hw fights on shows if they’re going to be that low caliber. Just pick the absolute best 4 they can get and do a 4 (rather than 8) man tourney if they feel they need to do one.

Disgusting, I said it when Coy was robbed, I said it when Brilz was robbed and i’m saying now that Imada was robbed fuck you asshole judges for ruining mma.

No one has been on the Curran bandwagon more than me but he fought like crap tonight, I don’t know if he chocked or if his cousin gave him a horrible gameplan or what. But he lost all 3 rounds and looked like crap and unless he does a 180 he will get destroyed by Alvarez who must be licking his chops after seeing that mess.

I swear to god, something has to be done about this these idiots are robbing guys of money, fame and glory. These guys are sabotoging the sport we have to have a way to fix this before it ruins mma for good I feel sick right now.

I had it 29 - 28 Toby

I must say the reason the judges gave curren the third was because that punch sounded like someone cracked a coconut. The general consensus in the stadium was that it was a close fight. I honestly didn’t see a huge infuriating robbery.

Who were the judges?

I had it 30 – 27 Toby. Names of the judges that voted for curran.
They need to be known as who not to judge MMA fights. The judges of that fight and Easton/Beebe should get together and go bowling.

Disgusting Decision

Here’s an idea – what if the judges announced their scores at the end of every round, so at least a fighter knew when he was getting screwed, and could fight accordingly.

Not to say Imada didn’t press the action in each round, and win all three on my card. But maybe if he knew it was split going into the third he would have done more to finish.

Silver lining: we’ll get to see Alvarez destroy Curran in like three minutes and then an Imada/Alvarez Super Fight in season 3.

I don't see the controversy

I thought Curran clearly won the second and third rounds while Imada won the first.

Curran landed the more effective shots in the second and third.

You guys are acting like Imada dominated when all he did was chase Curran around the cage and run into counterstrikes. Yeah he got a few takedowns but Curran was up in 2 seconds.

This isn’t even close to Machida-Rua 1, or Brilz-Rogerio……

He’s not wrong. While I didn’t think Curran actually landed enough shots to counteract Imada’s cage control, Imada didn’t really land a thing in the round. I gave the round to Imada overall, but it was a lot closer than a lot of people are giving it credit for.

by Tim Burke on Jun 11, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

i thought Imada won ...

largely because Curran didn’t do anything, really, except land one great shot. and when that one great shot rocked Imada, Curran didn’t even follow it up.

Curran backpedaled, made Imada chase him, and leaned against the cage for three rounds. that does not make a winner in my book.

Imada pushed the pace, actively engaged and was actually working through three rounds. he landed takedowns, landed knees against the cage and mostly nullified Curran’s limited stand-up.

I think they gave it to Curran based on the damage Imada had, his face was busted up pretty good.

by RolloTomasi on Jun 11, 2010 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

He didn’t have that damage at the end of the 2nd though, so it doesn’t work like that. They don’t judge all 3 rounds at the end, they score it after each round. They gave Curran the 2nd based on something he did in that round, not somethin he did in the 3rd.

Well, Judges can be wrong, and are on a regular basis

This fight, was at the very least in the top 5 worst decisions in MMA. I will say right now without seeing it at this moment, that it will be one of the more lopsided fight metric reports on record going to the wrong guy.
