Mauricio "Shogun" Rua Underwent Major Surgery on His Appendix Two Months Before UFC 113

The rumors about Shogun's injury were incorrect, but he was not 100% for tonight's fight against Lyoto Machida.  Shogun came down with Apendicitis a few months before the fight, and had to undergo major surgery.  The procedure was kept under wraps, but Shogun confirmed it tonight on MMA Live.

According to UFC sources, the UFC was prepared for the worst case scenario.  It was rumored earlier this week that the company had Randy Couture ready to step in to fight Lyoto Machida incase Shogun could not fight.

The funny thing is

That’s actually WAY more applicable in Machida’s case than Maia’s.

The “rich kid” part, anyway…

Although

My personal answer would be “AWOL, leaving only a guy who was swinging, kneeing, and tripping.”

Wouldn’t he be the playboy?

Scary

Both because Randy was going to get a title fight and that Shogun wasn’t 100%

Shogun certainly put credibility behind his theory of defeating Machida. Pressure.

Anyone thing it's funny

that Machida and Kimbo have the same basic strategy for beating them?

Are we talking about the same Randy Couture or is there another one with a chin?

C’mon…You think Randy would have a shot? Lyoto has lost one time, to a complete animal. Randy would get mugged.

really impressed with Shogun’s professionalism and heart. wasn’t a huge fan before this fight, but this won me over.

Anderson Silva should take notice: THIS is how a champion acts.

But is appendix removal really MAJOR surgery?
Its a pretty simply procedure.

It’s major enough when you’ve got stitches and chopped up organs in a spot that you expect to get kicks slamming into.

Tough crowd

I had an appendectomy at 14. I don’t think I was even back to participating in gym class 2 months afterwards, let alone KO’ing Machida. It’s like a week before you can even stumble around, all hunched over in pain. For a long time after the surgery, running or jumping makes your wound feel like it’s ripping apart. Maybe it’s easier for grown men or maybe they’ve improved their methods and created a less invasive version of the appendectomy in the last 15 years, but I’m constantly amazed at how quickly professional athletes are able to return from it.

Minor Surgery

Nice news break, that is pretty impressive to have surgery months before a fight. Amazing actually, not being able to fully train and have to be careful of breaking stitches, not to mention cardio issues. A small procedure like this is incredibly impressive given his performance in a championship fight months later, but Major surgery? Oops on the headline. I work at a hospital, this is far from major surgery. Nice break on the story though, must still give you props, I read it here first.

If Shogun keeps polishing that English, he can be the first real Brazilian MMA star in the US.
