UFC 113 Results: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua Leaves No Doubt, Knocks Out Lyoto Machida
They needed all five rounds the first time. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua needed less than five minutes in the rematch.
The bout started as the slow, technical battle that had defined their first battle. Lyoto Machida answered questions on whether or not he would work the ground game, securing two takedowns from the clinch. "Shogun" proved his jiu jitsu acumen, deftly and quickly moving his hips to stand back on his feet.
Machida didn't look to have a solid answer for the dynamic Muay Thai game of Shogun. He allowed his fellow countryman to stifle him with leg kicks, and looked uncomfortable on the feet.
And then it all came crashing down. Rua landed a right hook upside Machida's temple, putting the champion on the mat. Shogun followed with another punch as Machida's head bounced off the canvas. Rua landed in mount and rained down punches as Machida desperately struggled to hang on - to Shogun and his consciousness.
Referee Yves Lavigne allowed Machida the opportunity to recover, but Shogun put his lights out shortly thereafter.
Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the era of the Shogun.

No need for a 3rd fight...
Tonight was undisputable destruction. Nothing in Machida’s game makes me think that he has any answer at all for an attacking Shogun.

machida exposed
justice has been served…best fighter in the world is back
Machida wasn't exposed..
He just fought a guy that wasn’t afraid to engage him on the feet and was just as good standing ..
I think this fight was just how the first one should have went.. Shogun proved from their first fight that Muay Thai trumps Karate..
Tonight just reinforced that issue…

Sorry, just saying Pride ought to get a little credit because it was crapped on after Shogun/Forrest fight. I think Shogun’s proved he was that guy everyone imagined him to be when he was in Pride.
Not to be rude...
but you should probably start getting over it soon.
Pride doesn’t exist anymore, and no amount of declaring it better will bring it back.
Shogun, Rampage, Wandy, etc, etc, etc….are all UFC fighters now, or better yet MMA fighter who used to work for Pride and now work for the UFC.

Machida looked good, loved the takedowns he was working, although, it didn’t look like he’d be around long in the fight. Shogun went for the kill when he dropped him. Beautifully done. Machida is quality, and don’t doubt at all he’ll be fighting for a title again eventually.
Machida was the only fight I didn’t pick right. :/

i believe in justice again! awesome finish by shogun. machida was winning the round with his takedowns… i was nervous a little there.
I would disagree..
I had Shogun winning that round before the KO.
and that's the problem with MMA judging
take downs should not automatically mean points. Machida didn’t do shit on the ground, he landed a combined 5 punches, and Shogun was back on his feet in less than 30 seconds total. As far as I’m concerned those types of take downs are just stalling, and if it isn’t being used a stall tactic, then it just shows that the person on bottom is better than the one on top, and points should be awarded to them.
"It’s going to be like sex with a grizzly bear, you know, a lot of scratching and growling on both sides." - Don Frye
I think the way it should be judged as you get points for takedown – but a successful escape from the dominant position held by the ‘takedowner’ should count for almost as much points. Obvi, any striking down while in dominant position should be added on to that.
By your criterion
Would Diego Sanchez still have won over Clay Guida in R2 and R3? (R1 was all Sanchez, no doubt.)

he doesn't want to fight for the title cause he said it was Lyoto's belt...
now that it’s Shogun’s, I think he’d consider it.

But If he fights Shogun and wins, that somehow fucks with Lil Nog and possibly Machida.
by dancingChicken on May 9, 2010 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions
Machida anyway
Neither Lil’ Nog nor Silva have commented on fighting each other.
that's the beauty of it
there are two very viable PRIDE rematches for Shogun: Page and Lil Nog. They own the footage to both, and I’d like to see both ASAP, moreso than Anderson, even.

he was saying he would consider it, cause he didn’t want to cockblock Rogerio’s title shot… now that he lost, he probably won’t want to do it anymore, and it doesn’t make much sense anymore.

Huge for the UFC to get that finish. I think that only Rashad can handle Rua; Rua proved he can be taken down, but Machida clearly had no intention of causing damage from the guard and was using the takedowns as a leg kick counter.
What a hell of a punch – if you see, he moved his head out of the way of a slow, straight right from Lyoto and just clocked the open chin. He came to finish and Machida came to look classy. Guess who’s drinking urine now, chump!
it didnt land on Machida’s chin, more like his temple/ear area

People are gonna be shitting all over Machida now, but I think he had the right idea. What it comes down to, is aggressive muay thai vs. controlled power of karate. Machida’s first hard shot was great, thought if he kept that up, along with takedowns, he had a good gameplan.
But you don’t let Shogun start teeing off, and he did well trading with Shogun going back as the new champ came forward…then he got caught, tripped up (mixture of him losing footing and being hurt, not saying Shogun didn’t hit him hard), and then got mounted. I’m sorry, but that could happen to anyone, and they’d be KTFO’ed too. Can’t wait to see both men fight again.

I'd rather see both guys fight a ton of other guys before we see another rematch,
but yes, I completely agree with you. Machida was winning the round until he took a huge huge shot to the temple that put him down. Shogun is a great fighter, and there’s no reason to shit on Lyoto for losing this one.

that Machida era i keep hearing about didnt last that long. it was really over 7 months ago. im think rampage shogun 2 by the end of the year.
However, if there was no Shogun who else right now in the division did you see taking the title from Machida? Shogun was the only real hope other then Rampage to compete for the title since Evans was KTFO. You have to remember what the contender picture was like when Machida won the belt. People were complaining how Shogun barely beating Coleman and KOing a fading Liddell wasn’t enough to deserve a chance at the title. Now in hind sight, after fully recovering from his injuries, he is one of the only technical strikers with the ability to stand with Machida in the LHW division.

I’m not going to lie, I thought Machida was going to win.

I'm a little drunk
But HOLY SHIT! Rampage or Lil Nog next for either of these two. SHOGUN SHOGUN SHOGUN! After the fight I fist bumped Kyacey Uscola, no joke, he was totally on the Shogun bandwagon.

There is no reason to be talking about Fedor right now man.

True, but he never held the belt.

Agreed. For what its worth I thought Shogun was going to beat Lyoto the first time and lose the second. So I am both smart and retarded.

and also the only one not fighting UFC...
his track record is stellar, his (or better, his management’s) behavior of late is not
right
but that has nothing to do with my point. Fedor deserves all the credit in the world for his Pride days. But right now he and M1 are playing games and simply not fighting the best. period.
Interesting. Who was his one loss too?

Tsuyoshi Kousaka
On a technicality; Fedor wasn’t able to continue in the tournament due to a cut caused by an illegal elbow. Fedor did avenge the loss in the first round though in 2005 I believe.
Funny thing
If you feel that Shogun won the first time then you gotta feel that Fedor’s never really lost yet.
had it coming
fuck cheapshotting assholes…and I was hoping he’d win this.

Hi, My name is II SMASH II, and I am an elitist.
I like Koscheck the fighter, not the person.

Kos was just being Kos. Daley was being an ass.

It's bad my hate of Kos.
I still like daley even after the After fight shenanigans.
Koscheck could have won alot of fans but more BS trashtalk that i’m not sure anyone likes.
The moment I saw him chase after Koscheck after the fight I knew something was going to go down. He was trying to play it off as if he were going to congratulate Kos.

I would much rather see Koscheck vs. St.Pierre as opposed to St.Pierre vs. Daley. Would make for a much more competitive fight in my opinion.

Not as one sided as GSP vs. Daley would be though. That’s just me though.

Logan, Natasha and Paul Daley. NEVAR FORGET
I blame Koscheck’s antics for all of them.
I’m sort of conflicted. Shogun was my favorite fighter for the longest time. I finally drifted away after the Coleman fight and Machida filled the void that he left. I was left feeling a little disappointed until I saw him standing there looking into the camera with that huge childlike smile on his face, and he’s completely won me over. I love Machida, but Shogun totally won me over.
I loved the scene with his wife and daughter in the countdown show where he’s obsessing over his daughter, and how he seems really close with his family and siblings. Yep, Shogun is my type of dude.
It's a shame that the Shogun interview orcus translated got taken down
It was nice, but the PSA at the end was just great and warmed me up to him.
I could not see the fight last night, since I lost my internet connection
Just watched the replay and god damn I’m happy!
just got online
SHOGUN!!!!!!!!!!
not even suprised, hahahahaha to all the haters and machida’s boyfriends:D
PRIDE IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! kinda
shogun is gonna be champ for a while,
WAR SHOGUN FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PRIDE!!!!!!

That was impressive
I think there was a bit of luck in landing a temple shot like that, much the same that Brock landed on Couture in their match. But you still have to have the skill and violence to get the luck, so I will give Shogun his props.
But, his reign will be short lived. Look for Anderson to campaign quickly for a match and he will win it 99 times out of 100.
