by Dropkick434 on May 9, 2010 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

First of all, chill out dummy.

And i’m complaining because i think it’s an overreaction. Sucker punchers take place all across pro sports. When it happens in Hockey or whatever a fine and suspension is usually what happens, not blacklisting.

Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

by The Flying Gentleman on May 9, 2010 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

by The Flying Gentleman on May 9, 2010 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Just like if you put people in prison for breaking laws all crime will cease to exists, right?

I don’t think the world works that way.

And Dana just said the what Daley said to him after the fight had a lot to do with him getting cut. So it looks like if he was more apologetic he might still be around.

You guys demanding he be cut just for solely what happened in the Octagon are overacting.

Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

by The Flying Gentleman on May 9, 2010 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions

What does prison have to do with anything?

In order for prisons to eliminate all crime, you would have to be able to catch all criminals, so that has nothing to do with what we are discussing.

This is really simple.

If you let Daley off the hook for assaulting a man after the bell, then you have set a precedent that you will let people off the hook if they commit assault after the bell.

That is a bad precedent to set, and it will dramatically increase the number of people willing to break rules of all sorts, especially in regard to fighting after the bell.

That is how the world works. To argue otherwise is laughably foolish.

I see no coherent reason to have any tolerance for what Babalu did years ago, nor for what Daley did tonight.

by Lauren J Darkbloom on May 9, 2010 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions

It was a pretty simple analogy. You said the threat of extreme punishment would eliminate the problem all together, which is a logical fallacy. I used the prison/crime analogy to show this. There’s a bunch of other examples if you’d like… The point was that even if you ban people for sucker punching, that’s no guarantee that others won’t do so in the future. Just like if you ban people from life (prison), there will still be criminals.

And as i’ve said a bunch of times, you can not cut Daley while at the same time not letting him off the hook. Why are you acting like i’m saying he should get off free? DEGREES of discipline.

Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

by The Flying Gentleman on May 9, 2010 1:57 AM EDT up reply actions

“You said the threat of extreme punishment would eliminate the problem all together…”

No, I said, “If you ban people for sucker-punching, they will stop sucker-punching”. Whenever any human being makes such a statement, it is usually understood that they mean, “In general, if you ban people, etc.” I did not say, “Banning people for sucker-punching guarantees that it will never happen again.”

Nothing guarantees anything in human behavior, so that is irrelevant to the conversation.

Now, your analogy about prison was simple. It also had absolutely nothing to do with the conversation. As I said, “In order for prisons to eliminate all crime, you would have to be able to catch all criminals, so that has nothing to do with what we are discussing.” You have shown no reason why your analogy has anything to do with the conversation. I’m quite certain you could bring up other, equally irrelevant examples though.

Originally, you pointed out that in hockey sucker-punching results in a fine or suspension. In hockey, sucker-punching keeps happening. There is a direct causal relationship.

When other fighters see Daley get banned, they will take that into account when deciding whether to throw a sucker punch after the bell. And we will see a direct causal relationship between the UFC’s banning, and a lack of future offenses.

by Lauren J Darkbloom on May 9, 2010 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions

"If you ban people for sucker-punching, they will stop sucker-punching" = "Banning people for sucker-punching guarantees that it will never happen again."

This is really stupid.

by higgledy-piggledy on May 9, 2010 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

It puts a pretty big incentive in there to not ever think to do such a thing. Extreme punishment for actions like this do work. It basically keeps 99% of their roster from even considering it and the 1% are weeded out and gone pretty swiftly. I understand what you were trying to say with the prison analogy but it does not match up entirely with this type of situation.

Here’s one analogy to prove my point: Have you ever lived in or by a town that was extremely notorious for being strict on speeding? There is one such town that I live by that is like that. So the people that are local and know this make damn sure they are going 30mph or even slightly less when traveling through or in this town. Does it stop everyone? No. The blatantly intentional speeders still come around but they are easy to spot for the cops and get caught pretty quickly.

This analogy still falls short for the simple fact that the actions Daley took were in front of everyone to see and there’s no factor of having to catch him like there is with criminals breaking the law gambling with the chances of getting caught.

by YoungGun on May 10, 2010 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

here's the thing

it shouldn’t happen in combat sports.

i’m in favor of cutting Daley … i think it’s the right move, especially knowing the history of such antics in the UFC (like Renato Sobral’s blacklisting and Dana’s comments on the SF brawl).

show the fighters that the post-fight bullshit isn’t going to be tolerated.

i think it's a great deterrent

Daley loses huge potential earnings in fights/fighter sponsorships. He doesn’t fight in the UFC again, which means I don’t have to watch his thuggish crap.

my only quibble with the cut is that Dana is calling it a lifetime ban.

i would have also been fine with fining Daley 100 percent of his purse for this fight and a year’s suspension. keeps him under contract and not fighting anywhere else, which would REALLY hit him in the wallet.

I always liked Meathead. Even on the show I found him very entertaining. Dude can fight. He’s just very Ninja Turtle Green right now. Imagine if he got focused and dedicated and serious? Right now it just looks like he’s fucking around thinking to himself, hey I like this.

Exactly. He’s improved leaps and bounds since he was on TUF. which is not all that long ago. I don’t think he’ll ever touch e upper tier, but he good be a decent atekeeper to the middle tier.

At least he is showing improvement. Also, not many Heavyweights in the UFC actually throw triangle chokes off their back or even try to, so I was actually impressed that Meathead attempted those. Meathead’s head kicks were pretty sloppy, and there was sloppiness in his overall game, but he is definitely trying to put everything together and actually has some potential. I think he can be a solid mid-tier fighter, and he is at an age where the learning curve is still there for him. Mitrione smiling all the time in the cage did make him come across as a bit crazy.

I don't know about that

5 rounds is a long time to go when you’re relying on wrestling to avoid getting knocked out. We saw how well that worked for him against Thiago…he barely avoiding going to sleep in the 3rd because Silva was already gassed. And when you consider Shogun’s grappling acumen, I doubt Rashad would able to do much damage to him on the ground.

On the other hand, we already know that Rampage doesn’t check kicks, and he already got kicked to pieces by Shogun, so it stands to reason that a second fight could just be more of the same.

Agreed

Neither. Shogun will be champ for a while and I wouldnt want it any other way. =)

I’d have to say Rampage, even though he got brutalized the first fight. I feel like he’s tougher, and can withstand more of an onslaught from Shogun than Rashad could. He’s also got better stand up d (except leg kicks of course…), and more power in his hands.

Problem is

If Rampage showed any sign that he was still vulnerable to leg kicks, you know Shogun would go for it.

by Chortles on May 9, 2010 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Without a doubt. And his kicks are just brutal. But I really wanna see that rematch, and have since Page beat Hendo.

Yep

if Forrest, who has great legkicks, could almost cripple Rampage imagine what those chainsaws that Rua swings could do.

Evans’s problem is he’s can be a slow starter. In his fights with Liddell, Griffin, and of course Machida he took some time getting it going.

Alright, that's enough.

I’m sick and tired of the MMA Live crew talking shit about Akiyama’s win over Belcher.

Because

Belcher actually won that fight? IMO, he did. And he looked god doing it,

by MMA42 on May 9, 2010 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Seriously

Stop listening to everything Joe Rogan says, Akiyama won that fight ! Do not get me wrong, it was close, but on my scorecards Akiyama won 2 rounds out of 3 and i can not see any other way you score that aside then being blind and only listening to what Goldberg/Rogan are saying and taking it for granted!

Took me a few seconds to realize it was Belcher… he looks like a 40+ year old man.

Kos FTW

1. Kos showed tremendous fight IQ by refusing to trade with Daley and then doing his best impression of a wet blanket.
2. Kos showed epic restraint by laughing off and at Daley’s sucker punch, which only served to put an exclamation mark on Daley’s failure and general impotence.
3. Kos refused to ask for the crowd’s forgiveness and instead embraced the heel role.

Kos acted like he got hit by that knee which he did not.

Kos will be annoying on TUF

Kos will lose to GSP

Kos is a heel.

Kos will draw viewers.

Yes.

by The Darkness on May 9, 2010 1:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Whatever. A heel should be someone like Hardy or Lesnar. An antagonist. Kos might be a heel as well, but that doesn’t excuse him of being an honorableness cheater.

What are you “whatevering” in response to? A little acting never hurt anyone; I’m sure Kos would apologize if he knew he’d offended you so. Wait, no he wouldn’t he’s a heel. Don’t you like bad guy wrestlers? Andy Kaufman? This is great stuff. Pearls before swine, I suppose.

by The Darkness on May 9, 2010 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m whatevering to your comment in general.

A little acting does hurt a lot of people if in by doing so you’re also cheating. It hurts the fans who paid lots of money to see a fair fight, it hurts the opponent of said cheater after a grueling weeks long camp and possibly screws him out of a win he might have deserved and career progression, and it hurts the integrity of the sport.

And like i said. Heels can be all fine and cool, so long as they don’t cheat like that.

Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

by The Flying Gentleman on May 9, 2010 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Hell, Delay’s a heel and i’m pissed that he was cut. I really have no problem with heels. Who don’t cheat.

Hello. I take stuff too seriously.

by The Flying Gentleman on May 9, 2010 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

So sucker punching someone after the fight is better than acting a bit when a knee grazes your head? I guess it’s not technically “cheating” since the fight was over at that point.

by The Darkness on May 9, 2010 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions

You've convinced me

I think that a little bit of acting (which happens all of the time in, e.g., basketball) also incrementally decreases the odds of a successful resolution of the Israeli-Palestine conflict and finding a way to lessen systemic risk in the financial system without adversely impacting financial growth. I hate Koscheck.

Kos is a heel….that nobody cares about.

Kos wont draw viewers, GSP will.

Of course.

by xFenixKnightx on May 9, 2010 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

The crowd hates him and you clearly dislike him. To the extent you’re on the fence about TUF, if you feel strongly about someone, you’re more likely to watch, if only in hopes of watching his team get crushed, or to talk about why you hate him to your friends and on chat boards, which provides publicity for TUF, etc.

You should call Dana and tell him this ASAP. I think that Dana thought Kos was the selling point. He might scrap the whole idea and bring the exciting and versatile Shields in as a replacement.
