UFC 116: Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin Made Official

The UFC today announced the long-rumored UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin event, scheduled for July 3rd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with a heavyweight title fight between champ Brock Lesnar and interim champ Shane Carwin serving as the main event.  UFC president Dana White discussed the bout in the press release:

When people wonder why the heavyweights capture the imagination of all fight fans, it’s because of guys like Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin," said UFC President Dana White. "Not only are they great athletes and former national wrestling champions, but they both have the ability to end a fight with one punch. This is one of those fights that you won’t be able to turn away from because it can be over in a split second, and when it’s over, only one will walk away as the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion of the world."

In addition to the heavyweight championship main event, six other rumored fights were made official.  The card now includes:

- Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin
- Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
- Kurt Pellegrino vs. George Sotiropoulos*
- Roy Nelson vs. TBA*
- Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Stephan Bonnar
- Brendan Schaub vs. Chris Tuchscherer
- Kendall Grove vs. Goran Reljic
- Chris Lytle vs. Matt Brown
- Jon Madsen vs. Karlos Vemola
- Julio Paulino vs. Daniel Roberts*

Indeed. He’s smaller than Chael. If Nate dropped some muscle, 170 would be more realistic than 205 (but anything other than 185 is really stupid).

The fight isn’t actually in a “casino” per se. Yes, it’s at the MGM Grand, but the arena isn’t in the casino part of it, you don’t even have to go through the casino to get to it if you take the back way. So in short no, you’ll have no problem getting in.

People still say Fedor is going to lose. I don’t see why its so annoying that Brock is a polarizing figure. The fact of the matter is people don’t like him, and Carwin has a legit chance to beat him. Let this guy pick against him, it helps the hype.

He is a mean dude

I’m picking Lesnar, but I feel that Carwin has as good a chance as anyone. I just think his wrestling isn’t in the league of Lesnar’s and that Brock will determine where the fight takes place….. inside of Carwin’s guard.

Im going with Carwin and think that Shane is just a really bad matchup for Brock.

I don’t think Brock has anything for Shane even with his Hulk like abilities. I think Shane using his wrestling enough to survive and compete and force the fight standing were he will land that big hammer that brings down the monster.

Carwin by TKO RD 1

by MichaelJ1985 on May 4, 2010 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m still up in the air. Last year I would have taken Brock, but he’s coming off a yearlong “rest” where he nearly died from a life threatening illness. On paper, he takes Carwin down and completely controls the fight, but who knows if Brock can slip a single punch. And no one hits as hard as Carwin. This is one of those fights that should tell us a lot, but could end up telling us nothing.

by John Nash on May 4, 2010 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Here is the thing: Brock is fast and Shane is slow. Brock hits like a truck, but Shane can make birds drop out of the sky by clapping his hands.

If Brock can get Shane down and control the position he’ll get a TKO win in R2 or R3. If Shane can stop Brock’s TD, he will eventually land the frying pan shot.

by PhantomJab on May 4, 2010 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

My argument would be that Brock needs to get it to the ground immediately. Like thirty seconds in. Carwin should have enough confidence in his wrestling to keep it standing for half a round. Eventually he’s going to land one of those suckers.

Hey would this fight be considered Carwin having a puncher’s chance?

I mean Carwin probably wait no definiltey has by far theee best puncher’s chance in the history of fighting. But that would still be a puncher’s chance ?

Brock is given a legit advantage in the wrestling department but I don’t know if this qualifies seeing Brock is very green and the one place Brock is good at Carwin is also a D-2 Champ.

Eh oh well. Would have been fun saying that Carwin only has a puncher’s chance.

Winning by KO is pretty much Carwin’s only way to win this, he’s not going to win a decision or sub Brock.

One guy hits ultrahard. The other has an insanely takedown power. Only thing we need to know is Carwin good enough to stop the takedown? Unless Shane hits Brock before one td attempt, i think there is nothing much we need to know bout these guys.

Actually...

Brock only wins one way: Ground and Pound.

If he can’t control Shane he can’t win. Shane is just as strong, and knows just as much about wrestling and has been fighting in MMA longer.

He has more ways to win, and better hands.

I guess it could happen. If he was going to knock somebody out it would have been Randy Couture.

Has he even put anybody to sleep on the ground before the ref called it?

He’s strong and he hurts you, but he doesn’t have put you to sleep power like carwin.

Sure Brock has never really KOed anybody w/ one punch, but i am pretty sure he is a very very close 2nd to Carwin in terms of power in their hands.

This is by far the biggest fight of the year for me. And honestly this is comparable to Fedor Lesnar to me. I am so stoked about this fight. I feel like this fight isn’t getting the hype it deserves. When have we ever seen two beasts go at it like this? There’s never been a guy like Lesnar or anything close to him. And there has never been a Carwin either. We have never seen power like these guys have in their respective advantages. Shit Im fucking stoked!
