Dana White Wants Diego Sanchez Back at Lightweight:

"I'm not [Sanchez's] manager, but I think he should stay at [lightweight]. Listen, a loss to B.J. Penn doesn't mean you go back up to 170. It means you stay at 155, and you do what Kenny Florian did. You stay in there and you keep grinding it out and keep beating the top guys, and you get back in line and work your way back up to the top again... Diego does not look good at 170."

I thought it was more like Joe said.

Hathaway is a new generation of fighters with good striking and grappling. Where as Diego only has the grappling going for him and his striking is left way behind.

So no matter where he goes, if he meets a BJ Penn type fighter, he’s gonna be in trouble.

by grein on May 30, 2010 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

That didn’t stop Mike Russow from KOing “a new generation of fighter” in Todd Duffee. Prior to the KO, in the first two rounds, Russow “only had the grappling going for him and his striking was left way behind” but still won the fight.
It really isn’t a matter of cutting weight for Diego, it is a matter of fixing the holes in his game. Frankie Edgar is a small Lightweight but makes up for his size deficiencies by working on his movement and overall standup. I would like to see Sanchez vs Florian at Lightweight, and there are still good fights for Sanchez at Lightweight, so I would personally like to see Sanchez fight at Lightweight.

That’s called a puncher’s chance, and nothing more.

by Charger567 on May 30, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

That makes it sound as if Mike Russow threw a “lucky punch” to win the fight.

by chrisbboy82 on May 30, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we can agree that Russow’s win was probably a miracle. Duffee completely dominated him until the shot to the temple.

by judonerd on May 30, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

he didn't dominate him

he was merely winning.

this sport is unforgiving… you have to finish or you run a very serious risk of losing.

I didn't score it 20-5 because it wasn't dominant.

Seriously? Not dominating?

I think there was at least a 15-20 to 1 striking advantage for Duffee before that shot. I don’t think you could get dominated much more than that without finishing the fight. Russow took shots like a porn star.

by Doc Martin 28 on May 30, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Some are arguing that this shows that Russow is a better fighter than Duffee with the reasoning being that the person who wins the fight shows that he is the better fighter especially if he KOs, RKOs, or submits his opponent. While I don’t necessarily agree with this, there is an argument now that Duffee is no better than a Mike Russow-caliber fighter. Some are even saying that Russow is an iron-chinned prospect, despite being 35, to look out for (I don’t feel this way though).

by chrisbboy82 on May 30, 2010 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed with Dana, but Hathaway will be a problem for many WWs. He beat Story before, and now Diego. He’s a really big WW, and has a very good overall game. That’s a tough matchup.

by Hardcharger on May 30, 2010 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

Amen. Never ever fight at 170 again, Diego.

Diego was chubby at weigh ins and nearly tripped during a YUS cartwheel.

Losing was his destiny. BJ kicked the next few Ws out of him.

by silent.bisonte33 on May 30, 2010 10:28 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

i wouldn’t go as far as saying he looked chubby but he definitely wasn’t as ripped as he has been in the past.

I think it’s very tough to judge Diego on his performance in the fight last night after he took that huge knee early in the fight. Watching the replays of that knee left me wondering how it didn’t put him out. So I have to think that had an effect on how he fought the rest of the fight.

Having said all that I think Diego will find he can be more successful at 155 lb. in the future though.

Just BE.

Sanchez’s energy looked a little down in the fight. It was almost UFC 69ish the way he was going aboot it.

Overall though his skillset kinda leaves him in trouble no matter whether he’s at lightweight or welterweight. His wrestling just isn’t good enough and in the wrestling shark tanks that are those divisions he’s kinda screwed.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

stupid comment by Dana (again)

Diego has looked far more impressive at WW than at LW.

Losses to Fitch,Koscheck and Hathaway don’t change it.

This fight showed more about how good Hathaway is than Diego being “in the wrong weightclass”

by KOQ24 on May 30, 2010 10:52 AM EDT reply actions

compare old WW diego to this current WW diego...

he really still hasn’t gained the muscle mass he lost when he dropped down.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

by Day Man on May 30, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I hope he stays at welterweight man. He just needs to do some strength training and some more striking work.

by moonlapse88 on May 30, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Diego had some good momentum going after his two losses to Kos and Fitch. He was bulking up and looking better than ever.

Then out of the blue he decides to drop to LW where his frantic style made him one of the pack instead of setting him apart and got nuked by BJ.

Now he’s back up at WW, where he is effectively now a blown up LW.

Lesson: don’t go bouncing around weight classes.

I somewhat agree, but Diego had no big wins at WW in years. He got easy fights after dropping his last 2 big fights to Kos and Fitch, which is going on 3 years ago. I don’t know if he matches up with top WWs anymore. It sure doesn’t look like it.

by Hardcharger on May 30, 2010 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

This was a weird fight for Diego. I didn’t notice much discussion about it before the fight but he moved back to New Mexico and joined some random camp for this fight. I believe he was training with Albuquerque Kickboxing and MMA but I’m not positive. It’s weird that he would move back to Albuquerque but not feel welcome to re-join his old camp.

I’d be willing to bet he’ll go back to Greg Jackson after this loss. I’d like to see him start training with Team Jackson and fight once or twice more at welterweight before deciding he needs to cut back down to 155.

by Lucas2 on May 30, 2010 11:22 AM EDT reply actions

Definitely agree about returning to Team Jackson. He hasn’t looked the same since he left that camp.

by Hardcase on May 30, 2010 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I have grown

to hate Jackson’s game plans from some recent fights. He seems to have fallen in love with pushing up against the cage for 15 minutes

by av1o3 on May 30, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Greg Jackson is a big fan of winning.

by Worldisart on May 30, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

You nailed it.

He stopped training with Apollo Sebastian after the Guida fight and his striking was awful against BJ. He stropped training with Saulo Ribeiro after the BJ fight, and his jiujitsu suffers for it. Not to mention that he was out partying in Pacific Beach nonstop until less than two months before this fight.

But he won’t go back to Jacksons. Not while GSP is there. And the next best camp for him to go to, AKA, won’t work since he’s lost to Kos and Fitch and they don’t need another WW.

Truth is, Diego is selfish and his personality is abrasive. Nobody is clamoring to have him come train with them and he isn’t smart enough to stay in one place. When he is with a good coach he is one of the fastest learners I’ve ever seen, but his head just isn’t right.

Diego is one of those fighters where he’s not big for WW and there are a ton of guys who fight at WW who cut from 190+ so he’ll always give up size, but too big for the cut to 155 where he loses his speed/explosiveness/strength. He looked slow and out of shape, at least compared to old 170 Diego who constantly pressed the action. Like he didn’t put the weight back on properly.

He needs to return to Jackson as he hasn’t been the same fighter since leaving. When he joined the Riberios at University of Jiu Jitsu that’s all he did in his fights and he never really worked his stand up. He needs a complete team. He’s not elite but he can be a solid gate keeper between the A&B level fighters in either division.

Florian would beat him in a rematch.

I still think Diego takes that fight. Florian is very talented but I still think hell struggle with wrestlers w even decent boxing. Diego is gonna struggle against anyone he can’t take down because his stand up simply isn’t good. The problem is his wrestling is not great either. He’s a good fighter but will never be great.

by xbuckeyex05 on May 30, 2010 11:24 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

No way

Florian’s boxing has improved a lot after the BJ fight, same with his tdd. Florian will keep this fight standing up and just pick Diego apart

by av1o3 on May 30, 2010 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe White is speaking more as a promoter than someone concerned about Sanchez’s career. The fights at lightweight (Sanchez/Florian for example) are easier to sell than the ones at welterweight.

The last thing Diego needs to do...

is make an immediate decision based on this loss. He needs to take some time to examine what happended and re-evaluate his training and skillset before doing something drastic like chaning weight classes again.

Leaving LW just because he lost to BJ was a reactionary move that was probably not such a great idea.

Dude. It's Anderson Silva.
If he gives a damn he will end Sonnen’s night by either sub or KO.

Thank God that Dana isn't his manager..

If a major change was required, it would have to be Diego’s camp. I love Saulo and Xande, but they’ve done very little for Diego’s career since he joined them.

I’d like to see him continue to work on his strength training because he looked a lot softer and less explosive than the Diego who fought David Bielkheden in 2008. I definitely think he hasn’t physically acclimated himself back to 170, so hopefully he sticks to his power-lifting regimen.

On the technical side, he needs to go back to the drawing board and recognize that his striking and wrestling are preventing him from ever getting into the contender circle.
