I think Forrest did want the fight.

Not saying he would have won, but, no one thought he had a chance against Shogun or Rampage either. I admire Forrest’s abilities, he isnt the best, but usually has entertaining fights.

Yea would really get to see Jones sub defense that’s for sure.

by MichaelJ1985 on May 4, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

really?

I think he is a definite favorite in terms of the line… and is too quick and athletic for almost all of the LHWs… i am really impressed by him, Matt Hammill is tough, Vera is tough, he absolutely destroyed those guys, and is just getting better all the time.

I would pick him right now, straight up, against every single LHW. I think he could get both machida and shogun to the ground and hurt them badly with ground and pound. The guy’s natural talent is sick.

by chimps on May 4, 2010 3:25 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

so actually, i think he is too quick and athletic (with excellent technique) for all of the LHW’s, but the UFC will bring him along to maximize his potential… altho I think he has Lesnar level natural talent and could easily be fast tracked. The difference is that Lesnar is much older and the UFC and Lesnar had/have less time to maximize their revenue on his career. Jones is so young, everyone can afford to let him develop a bit more slowly.

by chimps on May 4, 2010 3:28 AM EDT up reply actions

YOU MEAN

The same Shogun that broke quinton jackson’s ribs with a round kick??? Uhhh… No.

Jone’s could beat him only if his knee injuries recur. Otherwise, at this point and time Shogun picks him apart. Same for machida. They are both fast, technical guys. Against most LHW’s he could win though. Evans would be a toss up, as would Jackson, due to better hands and a very solid chin. He would have to be able to get them all down to even have a chance of winning at this point. Outside of that, I think Jone’s takes on most LHW’s.

by JaeeJaee on May 4, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

It'd be a tight line

Also, he fought twice in Affliction. I’m assuming you meant that you weren’t impressed with his fight with the Janitor, in which he beat the shit out of/avenged a loss to the first guy to ever defeat him (who has also only lost that fight in the last six plus years).

by puuhonua on May 4, 2010 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

it’s possible but my money would still be on nog, he’s a faster version of his big bro and more technical boxing, jones would have to fight this one a little more technical than he was used to, imo rogerio would take this by decision or a ko/tko by getting inside and lighting bones up with a nice 3 punch combo

by 1inchpunch on May 4, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Just read about Thiago Silva vs. Tim Boetsch, looked into what happened to Bader, and found out about the hand injury. Really bummed about that. He also had the benefit of fighting 8-14-2 David Frendin twice. Don’t want to be harsh, but he has no business fighting in the UFC, let alone against Mirko on 4 days notice.

damn skippy. That’s why it’s not such a bad deal for Perosh. I think the guy is probably a pretty slick negotiator to pull that off. I think they’re going to slow play Jon Jones, but they really should put him in against Nogueira. That’s a hell of a fight, and if Jon loses, so what? He’s young enough to absorb a loss and roll on. Let him measure himself against a top fighter and see what’s what. I think he’d be fine against Lil Nog, who I like a lot, and expected to batter Forrest. I may just be prejudiced against Versus due to their hockey coverage, but UFC on Versus 2? Big deal.

by Kwisatz Haderach on May 3, 2010 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

Could be tricky. Don’t think anyone is going to want to take on Lil Nog on four weeks notice. Only LHWs on tap for 114 or 115 and could step in are Franklin, Liddell, Cane and Cyrille Diabaté. Franklin vs. Liddell is the headliner, Nog beat Can, and no one wants to see him fight Diabaté.

by JCBee on May 4, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Not likely

Majority of Brilzs’ wins are by submission or decision. No way he submits Lil Nog or wins a decision here. Lil’ Nog has quite a definitive edge here in terms of skill, more experience against top opponents, and the best training camp on the planet. This is a mismatch if you ask me.

Yeah. Props to Brilz for taking someone so dangerous on such short notice. It is low risk, high reward for Brilz. A win puts Brilz way up there, and a loss really doesn’t put him back at all, and he’ll just be where he always was on the Light Heavyweight totem pole. There really isn’t anywhere that Brilz can win this outside of a "puncher’s chance. I can see Brilz taking or trying to take Rogerio down, but the Nogueira brothers are notorious for their BJJ.

by chrisbboy82 on May 4, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it's actually high risk / high reward

There’s a pretty high risk of him losing

It is high reward in the sense that he will get another fight in the UFC even i he loses. Dana rewards those who step up. Like Anthony Perosh.

True, but Dana also rewards those who are exciting, which I believe Brilz is not. Don’t forget, Eliot Marshall was released after going 3-1 in the UFC because every single one of his fights was a snoozefest. I have a feeling that part of the purpose of the Jones / Matyushenko fight is that thew UFC wants to cut Vladdy when he loses because of his unexciting style. I’m not saying they’d definitely cut Brilz for losing to Lil Nog on short notice, but it wouldn’t shock me.

Why couldnt they get someone better? Make Vitor move up, or give one of the up and comers get a jump in competition ( Jon Jones, Phil Davis, Ryan Bader). or give it to Keith Jardine or Thiago Silva (at least someone with a name).

It really depends on the fighter in this case as well. Rogerio is a VERY TOUGH opponent and a Light Heavyweight contender, and while a win would get anyone into instant Title contention, a loss would hurt someone like Jones’ or Bader’s momentum. Also, Rogerio is a top Light Heavyweight, so he is someone that needs a full training camp for and is not someone to come into a fight unprepared.

by chrisbboy82 on May 4, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess so, but i know a lot of fighters keep themselves in great shape year round and 114 would still give them about 3 full weeks to prepare.

There is a live crowd they have to think about. Rogerio is the co-main on this card, to just scrap him off entirely when there is a ton of time left to find a replacement would be retarded.
They could have found someone better than Brilz though. He’s okay, but frankly, this is a lame duck of a fight, Rogerio deserves to be fighting someone better.

He really is not that terrable at all when it comes to skill its just a real real bad Cardio issue. And at this point sence its happend so many dam times I really blame Team Quest for not making him work a better cardio program or they are overworking him to much leading up to the fight, Or he’s just real lazy and hated to train ? Its one thing or the other and it still has not gotten fixed Yet.

Just look at all the fights he lost every single one he one the first round. He not only won the first round but won it convincingly. Just watch the Machida,Cane, Babalu, Mousasi. fights Sok lost every fight in the 2nd round after he gassed and just fell apart. Same happend in the Minowaman fight exsept it went to the 3rd round before he got KO’ed.

i dont really see how it matters that jones and thiago silva were already booked for fights. the ufc scrapped saunders/ellenberger 2 days before the event so jon fitch could fight and thiago was originally signed to fight forrest before that became AS vs Forrest….hopefully if we all blow up dana’s twitter he’ll do something to change this fight lol…i mean it worked once when the fans got all pissed about franklin/hendo II

by MrMet527 on May 4, 2010 7:40 PM EDT reply actions

Not really though, Hendo-Franklin II was scrapped because Hendo was out of contract and never signed a new one. The whole “we changed it for the fans” thing was just hand-waving over that.

Anyway, Nogueira is too dangerous an opponent for Jones at this point, and on the other hand Thiago is getting a winnable fight because he stepped up while injured at voodoo-cursed UFC 108. Lil’ Nog is decidedly not an easily winnable fight for him. Plus a loss to Nogueira would make Silva 1-3 in his last four which puts him a LONG way from contention.
