Quote of the Day: Wanderlei Silva Won't Retire Until His 40's

"I want to fight over six years, at least until I hit forty. This change of class was good, I had to re-educate myself on the food and I'm feeling pretty good about it,"

--Wanderlei Silva, 33, has seen better days in his career, but says that he isn't planning on retiring anytime soon.

Prior to dropping down from light heavyweight, "The Axe Murderer" had lost 5 out of his last 6 bouts, but he says having surgery and making the cut to middleweight has helped rejuvenate his career. The PRIDE legend impressed on his last fight when he defeated Michael Bisping, and now will look to stay unbeaten at his new weight class when he faces Yoshihiro Akiyama on UFC 116.

It’s hard to believe he is younger than Anderson Silva. I’ll always watch Wanderlei fight no matter how many times he loses, or how old he gets, but his best days are behind him I’m afraid.

i hope he ko’s akiyama then fights nate if he wins his next fight witch i think he will. if he can get past nate that would be 3 in a row and hes right back in the pic. i think sonnet vitor and spider are very bad match ups for him so i guess only time will tell.

Wand, you're one of my all-time favorite combatants

But you’ve only got about 3-4 more years of High Level competition left in you. Maybe even less than that. Please retire when your body tells you that it can’t do this anymore.

I can’t believe I’m older than him (and several other fighters like Fedor), they all look so old. I guess getting punched in the face a lot isn’t good for your complexion.

It’s pretty ridiculous that Wand is 33. I imagine the stress, weight cutting, injuries, etc. all accelerates the aging process.

And the pure venomous rage that fueled his career in pride. He was already weathered by the time the UFC signed him, but he’s really looking older, the surgery helped a bit though.

The funny thing is, by all accounts he was quite pleasant OUTSIDE the ring in his Pride days.

Dude. It's Anderson Silva.
If he gives a damn he will end Sonnen’s night by either sub or KO.

Call Me Strange...

But win or lose, I’ll watch Wanderlei fight in his 50’s or 60’s. Barring an earlier stoppage he’s always destined to be in a great fight. I love his wreckless muay thai style. It may get him caught from time to time, but he gives it 100% of everything he has everytime. I can appreciate that.

So you'd rather see Wand end up like Gary Goodridge

Than have him retire with his dignity and body still somewhat intact?

yeah,

Dana tried to step in when Chuck was losing, and I think he’d do the same if Wand starts losing again.

The problem Deo is you're not a real fan

A real fan wants his favorite fighters to continue until they’re drooling vegetables and are shipped off to some roach-infested flophouse so they we won’t have the burden of seeing what become of them for our entertainment.

by John Nash on May 23, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not fair

I’m sure in this wish scenario of his, Wand also retains his brain function. Truth is, none of those things are gonna happen and Wand will retire sometime in the next five or so years.

Not Exactly...

Deo, I don’t want him to fight til he’s dead, I would just watch him fight if he chooses too at an old age like Randy. Will he make it that far? No, but I would love to watch Wanderlei fight for as long as he wants.

As long as he wants and as long as he should are two totally different things

The difference is,Randy started fighting at about the same age Wanderlei is at right now. They’ve had basically the same length career. And you’re asking Wanderlei to extend that by another 7 years?I love Wanderlei, probably more than most of you do,but the man is seriously shop worn.Wanderlei got busted up in a lot of his fights, even the ones he won convincingly. And those years on the bare knuckle Vale Tudo circuit in Brazil didn’t help any either. This guy has taken ten careers worth of abuse.

I don’t think he makes it another 7 years in this sport,to be honest. Not in the UFC,at least, and not on the highest levels. He’ll end up back in Japan, fighting random cans, and then occasionaly being brought in as a lamb to slaughter for someone they want to put over.Basically the same position that Sakuraba is in right now.

Good for him! Stay posi and stay strong wand!

I hope he keeps improving and keeps winning. I think he’s learning how to play the UFC game.

I don’t know…. I’m still a bit unconvinced. At this point in his career can Wandy really hang with some of the top fighters in the Middleweight division? His fight against Bisbing was a solid showing but I’m still not sold.

FEDOR

Fedor fights heavyweight but should fight LHW as he walks around between 220 and 230! He could cut to 205 without much problem. He is way undersized for the new HW’s! Although I think he is the most talented fighter I just don’t know how effective he would be against Lesnar, Carwin or even Overeem. But imagine him at 205!!!!!

by panamaman on May 23, 2010 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

True. I hoping to hear some opinions regarding my post. Most people agree Fedor is extremely talented, some say best HW around. I’m just curious why more people don’t think he should fight LHW rather than HW. I really like Fedor but I think he would have serious trouble with Lesnar, Carwin or Overeem not because of talent but simply because of size. Your thoughts??

by panamaman on May 23, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

If this were a post about Fedor

Then I might indulge. But it’s not, so I won’t.

I wouldn't have it any other way

I just hope he gets a couple easy fights in between there like a Scott Smith or Kevin Casey.

as a Wand fan i'm encouraged by his performance against Bisping...

He fought more intelligently and this whole “I’m becoming a student of the game” attitude is gold for aging fighters.

I think he can stay relevant for another 6-7 years if he keeps going like this i.e. fighting intelligently and fighting only 2-3 times a year.

I would be very surprised if he didn’t get dominated by someone like Anderson Silva or Vitor Belfort, it’s these really dangerous strikers that make really bad match ups for him. Nate and Chael would be good fights for him.

by Ilias on May 23, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly, I think I’d be happiest if he fought an A level fighter, lost, and just coasted the rest of his career in the B level putting on exciting fights. Many people started dismissing Bisping after the Hendo loss, but he did great against Dennis Kang and was given the fight of his life against Wand. The fact that Wanderlei (in my mind) convincingly thwarted whatever Bisping brought to the table, was a HUGE sign that Wanderlei is alive and kicking, while he won’t see the belt again, he has a healthy career ahead of him if he keeps it up.

For the record, I don’t see this whole “fight till I’m 40” thing working out, and it’ll break my heart to see Wand get hurt, and hurt again in the cage.
