Was there a doubt?

That’s like me grappling a 3rd grader.

Good luck finding a 270 pound 3rd grader.

That kid’s obese? Just looks like he’s a big dude for his age to me.

very cool of Laraque

felt his size would be the difference & had the balls to find out.

by woodson28 on May 22, 2010 11:14 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Balls?

Doesn’t really take balls to grapple someone no matter who they are.

by Bloodsport on May 22, 2010 12:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It takes balls for a guy who’s known for his toughness to be willing to risk being defeated by a man much smaller than him

Green Jacket, Gold Jacket, who gives a shit?

by Hendar on May 22, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Size?

I just don’t see how size would make a difference. Going against GSP I’m pretty sure he didn’t go in thinking he was actually going to win. His toughness is a totally different type of toughness, he’s a enforcer not a fighter. Not trying to argue just what i thought. For example one of my best friends was a national wrestling champion and he can put me on my back in like no time and I out weigh him by like 50 pounds. That takes no balls on my part.

Tell me I’m not the only one who found this funny.

Do you think by defeat they meant dryhump?

by derreckla on May 22, 2010 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

So, is he a grappler, or just some random guy who likes to lift weights?

by grein on May 22, 2010 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

And this gives him grappling experience?

by grein on May 22, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

None

He’s not really even a hockey player.

Not afraid to nitpick

I was just commenting he’s not some random bum who lifts weights. He’s a former pro hockey player.

The fact that he is a pro hockey player makes him a harder than average person to take down. As a former hockey player and high school wrestler, as well as huge BJJ fan, I know the advantage that having incredible balance on skates gives you, which is an incredible balance off the ice. Also, even on a bad day, Georges Laraque can manhandle bigger men than himself. This guy may not have ground skills, but like GSP said, that didn’t make it easy. He’s also, not just the former enforcer for the Habs, but can also play the game pretty well. I personally don’t know anyone who could switch places with GSP and have a chance.

by bubbafat on May 22, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Nah I'm a St. Louis Blues fan

But he really is a borderline professional hockey player, he’s a professional enforcer who plays in the NHL and he is good at fighting on skates.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on May 22, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe now, but not his career, and that’s a matter of opinion. You don’t know what the Tkachuck you’re talking about.

by bubbafat on May 22, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Hence present tense

He hasn’t been the least bit relevant as an actual hockey player for a few years now, there’s no way he would have been in the NHL the past 2 years for certain had he not been good at fighting. Stone hands and can’t skate…..he is a fighter not a hockey player.

I don’t know anything about Hockey, whats an enforcer do?

by Kefka on May 22, 2010 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t understand, I know there is fighting in hockey, but I did not think it was allowed technically , the refs did not even step in until one of the guys fell. What is the penalty for fighting?

by Kefka on May 22, 2010 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

2 minute time out in the corner (penalty box).

Someone else can confirm or dispel. Haven’t watched hockey in forever.

How can you not like GSP

The more i see of GSP the more i like him, i think he kinda fights safe these days but what a nice guy, a perfect guy to represent the sport. I hope he crushes Kos the Muppet.

by TLow on May 22, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't Finish?

As of late he plays it smart, and any one smart would do the same. But he’s finished 13 times in 20 wins. That’s 65% of the time not bad at all. What people don’t understand is he’s fighting for himself not anyone else. This is how he makes his living he’s not gonna throw it away just to impress fans. There’s is nothing wrong with taking the route he does in a fight. People complain to much that he wrestles now. Well if fighters don’t like it stop it then. If you find something that you know your so good at opponents don’t stand a chance and it’s been working great for you why mix it up. You find something that works no need to change it unless it stops working.

by Bloodsport on May 22, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I was being facetious… I actually dont see the fuss. He dropped fitch twice and Fitch is not easy to finish so I give him a pass. He dropped alves once and was on his way to stopping him until he tore his abductor so he gets a pass there as well… and he had hardy in 2 subs 95% of guys would have tapped to.

So no, I dont hold anything against him because the effort is there. He just doesnt take too many risks and that shouldnt be a problem since he wins 98% of every minute of every round. It would actually be stupid to further risk unless the fight is very close or part of a greater strategy.

will this cause him a problem in the future? maybe… fighters behave differently if theirs a chance they could be hurt (mike tyson syndrome) versus just being outwrestled.
