Strikeforce Challengers VIII - Live Results and Commentary

As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for Strikeforce Challengers VIII. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Showtime broadcast (at 11PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
The broadcast is live, first fight up shortly
Bryan Travers vs. Pat Healy - Round 1 - Travers with a right hand that glances and Healy tries to fire back. Leg kick, right hand by Travers. Healy lands from the clinch. They're working from the clinch with both men landing small shots. Left hand lands for Travers as they go back to distance. Healy shoots and is stuffed. Right hand as they separate from the clinch by Travers. Healy lands two punches and Travers ducks under for the takedown. Healy scrambles back to his feet and lands a nice body, head combination. Healy doing some good striking work all of a sudden and he's turned the round in his favor. Travers keeps working for the takedown but can't get it. Travers became so concerned with getting takedowns that he ended up giving the round away. 10-9 Healy. Round 2 - They're doing a lot of exchanging early with both men landing. Healy gets two big takedowns but can't really do much with them. Back to exchaning on the feet and Healy is getting the better of it again. Healy keeps getting takedowns but Travers stands right back up. Now Healy with a takedown and he has the back briefly but Travers stands up. Knee to the face by Healy and now he lands some punches. Travers looks tired and Healy is turning up the pressure. Healy is working very hard in the clinch. Another takedown and again Travers stands up. Healy lands a few more punches as the round ends. 10-9 Healy. Round 3 - Travers looking very aggressive early, landing some nice punches. Healy with a jab to counter and a huge double leg to take the fight to the ground. Travers gets tot he cage and stands back up. Healy landing some body punches from the clinch now. Healy using solid clinch boxing. They're back to distance and Travers with a quick takedown now. Healy trying to use the cage to taand up but Travers does a decent job of controlling position. Healy is finally able to scramble to his feet and Travers with a trip. Healy back to standing. Big takedown again from Travers and again Healy stands up. Another takedown from Travers and Healy turns and has Travers' back. German suplex! Back to standing and Healy finishes the round throwing punches. Final scorecard for me is 29-28 Healy. Official Scorecards: 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 all for Pat Healy. Pat Healy wins by unanimous decision.
Tarec Saffiedine vs. Nate Moore - Round 1 - They're exchanging with Saffiedine landing the better shot. Moore with a shot and Saffiedine bounces right back up. Moore keeps driving forward for the takedown but can't get it. Moore lands a crisp combination. Moore looking very good here. Saffiedine catches him and now has the back of Moore. Moore trying to shake him off. Saffiedine slides off and they're back to standing. Nice shot lands for Moore. Saffiedine landing a few nice punches now. Flying knee from Saffiedine and Moore responds with a flurry of punches. Very good round. 10-9 Moore. Round 2 - Saffiedine landing a nice combination early. Moore shoots and can't get the takedown. BIG uppercut from Saffiedine and Moore is hurt. Moore shoots, can't get the takedown. HUGE RIGHT HAND FROM SAFFIEDINE AND MOORE IS OUT! Tarek Saffiedine wins by KO, round 2.
Roger Bowling vs. Bobby Voelker - Round 1 - Bowling landing punches early as they exchange and then a quick takedown. Half guard now. Voelker is cut. They're back to standing and Bowling is landing some serious shots here. Bowling with a body kick, punch, slips a punch and lands another. Head kick lands now for Bowling. A couple uppercuts land for Voelker. Bowling is landing some bombs here and then gets a big takedown. Bowling does a little damage and the round comes to an end. That was a lot of power shots, 2 takedowns and a very good round for Bowling. 10-9 round maybe even 10-8. Round 2 - Bowling drops him with a punch very early in the round and follows him to the ground. They're back to standing and again Bowling is just blowing him up. Again Bowling with the takedown. They go to standing and now Voelker with the takedown into side control but Bowling just stands up out of it. The round ends after another Bowling takedown and it's a 10-9 round for him. Round 3 - They come out and are throwing huge shots with each man landing. Takedown from Voelker now. Bowling spins for an armbar and uses it as an escape. As they're standing the ref goes to separate them and something happens to Roger Bowling's eye. The doctor is checking it. The replay shows that it was as the ref was breaking them that Voelker's glove caught him in the eye. After a huge stall with the doctor the fight is stopped. With it being an accidental foul they should go to the scorecards here. Official Scorecards: 29-28 across the board for Roger Bowling. Roger Bowling wins by unanimous decision.
Tyron Woodley vs. Nate Coy - Round 1 - Woodley with a takedown early. Coy throwing some punches off his back and trying to turn. They go back to standing and as Coy tries for a jumping knee Woodley knocks him down with a counter right. Back to standing and Coy tries to shoot again and Woodley stuffs it. Tyron spins to take the back now. Back to standing and Coy landing knees to the leg. Coy keeps working in and out knee strikes to the leg. They're actively working but restarted, because these awful regional refs that work these shows have no clue what they're doing. More knees to the leg from Coy and they're back to distance now. Woodley with a knee and a punch. Very close round but I'd give it to Woodley for the early part of the round. Round 2 - Coy landing a few kicks and then Woodley with a right hand. Body shot from Woodley. Counter right from Woodley and a jab from Coy. Coy with a punch and now he clinches up with Woodley against the cage. They're separated despite actively working yet again and Woodley lands a right hand. Now they each land right hands. Right hook from Coy, left hand from Woodley. Head kick from Coy and he slips to the mat. Woodley pounces on him and spins to take the back. Woodley has a minute to work. He lands a few punches and now a few hammerfists. Woodley spins for an armbar and has it but the round ends to save Coy. Woodley steals round 2 with the dominant position, damage and sub attempt. 10-9 Woodley. Round 3 - Some punches from Coy cause some swelling by the eye of Woodley. Tyron's leg appears hurt. Coy is really picking him apart with quick punches and leg kicks. Shot from Woodley and he ends up on Coy's back again. Coy stands up and gets a takedown of his own.Woodley tries for a leg but can't get it. Coy landing some punches from on top now. Coy continues to work his strikes. Now side control into north south. 10-9 round for Coy and my card reads 29-28 Woodley, but I fully think Coy will end up winning the decision. Official Scorecards: 29-28 Woodley, 30-27 Coy, 29-28 Woodley. Tyron Woodley wins by split decision.
Matt Lindland vs. Kevin Casey - Round 1 - Lindland with a quick body lock takedown and he has Casey against the cage. Lindland landing a few punches, avoiding an armbar and landing more punches. Casey manages to stand back up. Casey with a takedown and Lindland stands back up. Another takedown though and Casey has half guard. Lindland tries to scramble but gives up his back. Body triangle by Casey. Lindland defending the choke and landing punches backward to Casey's face. Lindland explodes back to the guard and stomps on Caseys legs and then lands a flurry of punches and knees as the round ends. 10-10 round in my book. Casey had his back but did no damage and didn't have the choke locked in at any point. Lindland did damage but had his back taken. Round 2 - Matt with a flurry of knees. Lindland puts him on his back, lands a bunch of punches and they go back to standing. Matt back to on top and he's landing punches. Casey tries to spin for an armbar and can't get it. Lindland passes the guard and has the crucifix. Lindland landing a lot of punches as the round comes to a close. 10-9 Lindland. Round 3 - Lindland with a quick takedown. Lindland just smothering him and landing a lot of punches here. Elbows to the body and legs from Lindland. Lindland just smothers and pours it on for well over a minute and the fight is finally stopped. Matt Lindland wins by TKO (strikes), round 3.

The last prelim saw Escovido win a 29-28 UD. Decent fight fought mostly on the feet bit marred by too much tentativeness.
I’m going out for a quick smoke. Main card coming up.
P.S. Sorry didn’t pay much attention to the first couple fights — too busy getting drunk. Did see one guy land a sweet triangle. Not sure who though…

I gave it to Healy...
but close. I just think Travers got weird about suddenly wanting takedowns and Healy took over the last part of the round. That takedown may have gotten Travers the win though.

although yea…I know Rogan gets a bit worked up sometimes; but in almost every other org I’ve seen, the announcers always come off as trying to hard to be excited. At least Rogan seems like he is truly excited when it happens. I can’t stand the cheesy announcer crap.

So far, I’ve liked the fights. I was impressed with Tarec in his last fight a couple months ago, and now with this KO over a very game Moore, who didn’t look that bad, I can see him going pretty far.

Every armbar attempt could end a fight…so could every solid punch, which Coy threw plenty of as well. And controlled more of the fight. And with every dominant position Woodly attained he could do absolutely nothing with outside of the armbar attempt.

These fights have been very good. It is like they want to make up for the lackluster CBS card because I felt that the last show Strikeforce had was good as well. There are also some talking points and dare I say, potential stars (Bowling, Saffeidine) made from this Challengers card. Strikeforce though needs to take these blue chip prospects out of the Challengers shows and put them on the big cards.

Also, Strikeforce’s welterweights pretty much hit it out of the park tonight. Voelker might not be a factor, but Saffiedine, Bowling, Woodley and Coy all were very impressive. Suddenly that division seems very healthy:
1. Nick Diaz
2. Jay Hieron
3. Mariusz Zaromskis
4. Joe Riggs
5. Tyron Woodley
6. Nathan Coy
7. Tarec Saffiedine
8. Roger Bowling
9. Andre Galvao
10. Luke Stewart
Not bad considering they only had Riggs and Stewart a little over a year ago.
Woodley needs some work. Coy has always been tough and has some good wins but Woodley really faded in that fight.
Bowling has a lot of upside but he still looks like a 155’er to me.
Other than that, it’s a legitimate division.

5-10 all need some work, but they’ve also given us plenty of reason to be optomistic. With that many irons in the fire, they seem assured to develop at least a couple elite level WWs in the next year or two if they can retain most of them.
I’m not sure about Bowling at 155 right now because I love how he was stepping in behind punches and going to the body often in the 1st round. It reminded me of Omigawa, who isn’t particularly big for his weight class either.
How great is it that Pat Healy somehow ended up in Strikeforce? He is perfect for testing prospects at LW. And between him and Prangley, SF now employs more MFC champs than MFC does.
Healy is a nice fit.
There is a slow roster evolution happening where you’re starting to see them put together divisions with challengers, prospects, gatekeepers..etc.
Before anyone gets all pissy i’m not saying they’re as deep as the UFC or anything…simply that they’re building toward something.
