Bellator XIX - Live Results and Commentary

via www.bellator.com

As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for Bellator XIX.  The live blog will start with the beginning of the FSN broadcast (at 8PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.

So again, join us for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.

A note: Results are below the fold.  Please be aware that while I'll not spoil the live results on the front page, we will not be waiting to talk about the results on the front page.  There will likely be multiple articles on the night's action up by tomorrow.

Star-divide

The broadcast is live.  First fight up shortly.

Dan Hornbuckle vs. Steve Carl - Round 1 - Carl pushes forward, shoots and gets a pretty quick takedown.  Carl walks him into the cage but Hornbuckle spins back.  Hornbuckle keeps trying to work for a kimura from the bottom and it's making Carl focus on defending rather than attacking.  Hornbuckle throws his legs over and finishes the Kimura.  It's used as a sweep and now he locks it in from the top and Carl is forced to tap out.  Beautiful technique from Hornbuckle who is using the tournament to prove that he can fight off his back and be successful.  Dan Hornbuckle wins by submission (kimura), round 1.

Ryan Thomas vs. Ben Askren - Round 1 - Askren with a body lock takedown into half guard.  Thomas regains full guard.  Tries tor a leg lock but Askren uses it to pass to side.  Pas to mount and then Thomas uses it to suck a leg in for half guard.  Full guard regained now.  Rubber guard by Thomas but Askren passes to side.  Askren with an armbar attempt and Thomas avoids, dives for an armbar of his own and ends up back on bottom with Askren in half guard. Mount by Askren, Thomas sweeps, they roll and Askren is back in mount.  Thomas trying to control here and avoid damage.  Armbar attempt from Askren and Thomas avoids and ends the round on top landing punches.  10-9 round for Askren.  Round 2 - They trade punches and Thomas gets a takedown.  A few punches from Thomas and they scramble.  Thomas looking for a leg lock but Askren manages to avoid and end up in side control, then full mount.  Askren landing shots and Thomas gives up his back.  Thomas prevents the hooks from getting in and rolls back over.  Askren in side with the crucifix.  Some punches landing now for Ben.  Full mount now.  Thomas gives his back and then back to mount.  Walks the cage to get out the back door.  Thomas is looking for a kneebar again but Askren defends.  Thomas really needs to give up on that kneebar. Askren mounted again.  Thomas gives up his back again but then back to mount.  Back given again.  the round ends and it was a clear Askren round.  Round 3-  Thomas lands a few punches and a clear knee to the chin of Askren and then they're back to the ground with Askren on top in side control. Crucifix again.  Some damage and Thomas scrambles, looks to be moving to good position but tries for an armbar instead and ends up on bottom.  Askren to mount, now back control, now mount. The round ends and barring the worst judging in the history of the sport he should have at least a 30-27 win.  Official Scorecards: 30-27 across the board.  Ben Askren wins by unanimous decision.

Diego Saraiva vs. Joe Soto - Round 1 - Saraiva with a solid jab early and then they hit leg kicks at the same time.  They go to the ground with Soto on top.  both guys land some shots but Soto is doing some nice ground and pound from the top.  Saraiva landing some punches from the back but then eats some big shots.  Omoplata attempt from Saraiva but he can't finish it and is still on his back.  Saraiva active off his back but he's not going to win the round with Soto on top landing punches.  Soto throws some elbows and there is a bad cut on the forehead of Saraiva. He's bleeding very heavily. The round comes to an end, it should be 10-9 for Soto.  Round 2 - There will not be a second round as the doctor has stopped the fight due to a very deep, very nasty cut.  Joe Soto wins by TKO (doctor's stoppage, cut), Round 1.

Hornbuckle is actually a huge comedian. Saw him fight in TFC around 2006 or something. He was scary as hell…

Afterwards he screamed helpful but smartassed BJJ tips at all the other fighters. From the nosebleed seats. You could hear him WAY above everyone else in the arena, and the whole crowd was cracking up.

barring any unlikely losses (Lyman Good included), Hornbuckle needs to be in the UFC after this. anyone know about Bellator’s champions clauses?

by Stillberry on May 20, 2010 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

doubt they're that tight.....

otherwise, they’d have trouble attracting guys like Hornbuckle. Besides, they can easily compensate for the loss of a champion because they’re so willing to admit there are other fighters in other promotions and their tounament format.

by garik16 on May 20, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the winner of the tourney gets $100k. Combined with the regular fight salary, that might be more than he would make in the UFC.

all these BJJ black belts that just lock up the closed guard and stay there could learn a lesson from this.

Do you mean control..

… in terms of hip position/posture? Or control in terms of Soto’s arms?

I think he did a decent job of controlling Soto’s wrists. I think his major problem was sitting in guard and not going for any subs/sweeps.

But I know little about advanced BJJ techniques. Any thoughts?

You have to open your guard to complete 98% of the sweeps or subs anyway. Sitting in closed is just a stalling method to kill GnP and take a breather.

Frustrating night of fights for me tonight, first as usual I miss the first fight thanks to Comcast. Then Thomas drives me crazy giving up great positions to go for subs that don’t end up doing anything. Then finally in the third Askren slows down and gives him an opening for a couple of subs and Thomas doesn’t go for them wtf?. Then the superfight ends because of a cut in a weak decision by the doctor what a bummer.

I like the theme that is playing out here.

Hornbuckle has submitted his first two opponents thus far off his back (this most recent one started there), and that is where Askren is going to look to put him. Hornbuckle may win this tournament with 3 straight submission victories, all coming from off his back.
