UFC 114 Preview: Dong Hyun Kim Says He Wants to "Give the Fans Something to Remember" Against Amir Sadollah

"Physically, I’m fully recovered and I’ve made the necessary improvements to my overall game," Dong Hyun Kim said. "But if there is one area that I think I’ve needed to work on – and this is something I’ve thought about a lot between the time of my last fight and now – I would say it’s my heart. I used to think that there was something brutal about going in for the finish, but that’s just the sport and I have to start doing it."

"I’ve had a lot of time to upgrade all of my skills."

"I think maybe in America, judo is underrated as a discipline in MMA," he says. "...It gives me an edge because when fighters close the distance, I can keep my balance and take them down. Someone who relies more on striking might not have that advantage."

"...Having spent some time training and sparring with him [Amir Sadollah], I have a good idea of what to expect in the fight. His Muay Thai skills are dangerous, so I know it would be smart for me to take things to the ground. But since I also want to give the fans something to remember, I’ll be just as glad to stand with him."

I like this kid....

…he is exciting to watch. Also, his comment on his heart was interesting and honest. When he mentions Judo and opponents closing the distance, I think he might be forgetting that in North America wrestling is king. He’ll figure it out.

Exciting fight. I look forward to it.

Good Judo is still a solid base to have

Amir will be hitting the mat, that much is certain

by lolumad on May 20, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

if american wrestlers were more inclined to clinch up and try throws (especially over/under lateral drops) judo would be a better counter-base, but the wrestlers seem to have fallen in love with double-legs.

I’ve always wondered why wrestlers don’t try to execute more throws directly to side control instead of double-legs into full guard, which they then seem to have trouble passing (other than Jake Shields).

by Stillberry on May 20, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the problem with a lot of throws

is that they can result in a scramble or a bad position if they aren’t executed perfectly. In American MMA (where knees to the head of a grounded opponent are not allowed) there is less risk in a single or double leg.

by truck on May 20, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Throws are dangerous, alot of unexpected injurys, double legs are “safer”.

Pain don't hurt...

by RolloTomasi on May 20, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

True, it tends to be pretty solid against greco practitioners though.

by lolumad on May 20, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I think they are just more comfortable in guard than the other positions. Unless they have some crazy submissions to try, they have an easier time getting the TKO or winning the decision from guard than from side.

by Phildo on May 20, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

crazy submissions? from side control? are armbars, cross side kimuras/keylocks, and arm-triangles crazy? i don’t know how many times i’ve seen guys on on bottom basically asking for a calf-slicer, which some could consider crazy, but is actually really basic

by Stillberry on May 20, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant their skill level, not that they are obscure/crazy submissions.

For people that aren’t great on the ground it’s easier to win a fight from guard than side control.

by Phildo on May 20, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

His judo

Is better then what we normally see in america. In the judo world, america isn’t very high up the totem. Judo is highly effective, it just needs to be tweaked more in terms of grips.

amir looked great in his last fight

and ive never seen kim fight so i’m hoping for an exciting fight

We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!

by milk72 on May 20, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn't he fight Baroni?

I don’t think Amir is ready for Stun Gun. Every fight I’ve seen he gets the back while standing. KIm by RNC.

by HappyLittleTreez on May 20, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

He’s fought Brad Blackburn since then, but yeah your point still stands, Stun Gun is way too good for him.

by TheKeyboardWarrior on May 20, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m surprised Amir is favored. Only slightly, but still, this is a huge step up for him.

by HappyLittleTreez on May 20, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

It isn't like Kim has been smashing his way through world beaters.

Take away the Karo fight and add Amir’s four finishes from TUF and the level of competition isn’t that far off…

by truck on May 20, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Amir is favored? wow.

by moonlapse88 on May 20, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I know. I’m gonna lay a couple units on Stun Gun. Must be all the hype coming of TUF.

by HappyLittleTreez on May 20, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he fought Brad Blackburn most recently

He looked good. The thing about Amir is that he has grown so much from fight to fight that watching him evolve has become an attraction for me.

by truck on May 20, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

That’s right, I didn’t get to see that one. Yeah, I’m a fan. Amir definitely has heart, that’s for sure. He’s got some nice stand up as well…I just don’t see him being able to put Kim away before he gets put on his back.

by HappyLittleTreez on May 20, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe Amir has some training in Sambo to go with his Muai Thai...

I know Kim will take him down, but I don’t think it will be a rag dolling.

by truck on May 20, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

theres a huge difference

between the korean judo scene and american judo scene.

by JaeeJaee on May 20, 2010 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me put it in lamens terms

Comparing what Amir knows in judo/Sambo would be like comparing a kid who wrestled a year or two in high school to an olympic hopeful. If he counters Kim it’s not going to be with judo. It would be absolutely crazy.

by JaeeJaee on May 20, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

So to drive the point home

Amir will be rag dolled if he clinches or gets clinched.

by JaeeJaee on May 20, 2010 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

All I'm saying is that a Sambo black belt does

include some takedown defense. I never commented about anybody’s Judo or compared anybody’s Judo to anyone else’s. I just think Amir will be able to do something other than fly around the ring with no feet on the ground.

by truck on May 20, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I just think Amir will be able to do something other than fly around the ring with no feet on the ground.

On the other hand, if Amir has mastered the art of levitation, it could make things very difficult for Kim.

by Verklemptomaniac on May 20, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

well...

Kim is more a sweep guy then a throw guy, though he has shown aptitude at both. That being said, this man was clinched by parysian, who I’m sure we can both agree has pretty competent judo, and still took parysian for a ride, and this was within 30 seconds. So in terms of throws, amir is a a huge disadvantage.

Amir’s Sambo is essentially judo with leg locks. That being said, Kim has a huge edge in that he has trained closely with some of the most successful judo practitioners in mma, barring Karo, who he beat imho. Thats before you even count the world class full time practitioners he’s trained with.

by JaeeJaee on May 20, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He dominated Blackburn

A few occasions he had him stunned and ready to knock him out but chose to take him down instead of go for the KO, which confused me.

by nastyem on May 20, 2010 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

Judo is underrated as a discipline in mma...

and it shouldn’t be considering it was the basis for BJJ. Judo throws are awesome to see employed effectively in mma fight.

"If your going to come on then come on!" - Harold Howard

by Bandaka on May 20, 2010 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

too many Judo throws rely on gi grips. and any judo throw that doesn’t rely on the gi has most likely been taught in any wrestling room in the USA worth its salt. (i know my HS coach loved incorporating judo throws into our training, hell a lot of that stuff became our bread and butter after a while).

so yes, judo throws do have a great place in MMA, but many judo-player MMA fighters can likely be countered by wrestlers as well.

All you need to know

He has legs of steel and solid standup.

by CaDreamer on May 20, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to go with Stun Gun on this one. Amir’s standup has improved leaps and bounds, but I think that this is too big of a step up for him. I can’t see Amir defending the judo throws and trips, so I see this fight hitting the ground with Stun Gun on top. If it stays standing, then the advantage would have to go to Amir.

by chrisbboy82 on May 20, 2010 11:34 AM EDT reply actions

But since I also want to give the fans something to remember, I’ll be just as glad to stand with him.

These kinds of statements drive me nuts. It’s sad that exciting = sub par kick boxing fight. Which is what we’re gonna see he he decides to stand with Amir.

i don’t know if i have that power, but this statement is so true i couldn’t help it. i hate being told someone is going to try to entertain me. mma fights entertain me, watching the best of the best entertains me. shitty kickboxing matches may entertain some people, but watching fighters actively not fight up to their potential is the very opposite of entertainment to me. it’s an insult to my intelligence and a shit product not worth my money.

Plus you have to remember the great waste of energy they use to ship the beer at ice cold temps like it matters. As long as the beer taste good (and not like water) and is cold when I get it I could care less how it is shipped. My piss has a stonger acl % than Coors Light.

Unless you have a vagina there is no reason to drink this crappy light beer. Lesnar will lose to Carwin, not because of his skill set, but because he is a wussy who drinks Coors Light.

I don't know... Some Russian dude designed it.
The Lingerie Beer Cans by RAMM show a city scene with factories and smoke, but when joined with another can a leggy pair of lingerie is shown. This design is easily one of the best we’ve seen in the beer world, but it could also be one of the most inventive packaging designs we’ve seen in years.

could be

but I remember the way he was busting up matt brown on the ground in rd. 3 and if he’s stepped up that attitude it could be a lot of trouble for anyone he gets on top of. And he has the skill to get on top of almost anyone.

Yeah, Kim has some awesome skills...

He should win the fight, I just think a lot of people write off Amir for a novice a little too easily. He is new to the sport, but he beat a few decent fighters in TUF. He beat Matt Brown, and he managed to polish off Gereld Harris and Dolloway and he was able to finish all his fights.

I know Dollaway and Harris aren’t anything overly special at this point, but the are both middleweights that are still under contract with the UFC. Kim should win this fight, but I don’t see Amir being run embarassed. Dude has a chance.

He didn't get robbed, but it makes you question the scoring system

He REEEEEEEALLY won one round, then just barely lost two (which is arguable). It wasn’t a travesty, but he was the better fighter that night for sure.

I narrowly gave it to Karo (based on the above), but was really hoping that he would edge one of those two narrow rounds and take it home. Makes you wish 10-8’s and 10-10’s were more prevalent, because he would have won or tied, no question.

I want to see Kim vs. Fitch

I’m not writing off Sadollah at all, he stands a decent chance of taking this fight, but I’m hoping Kim walks through him and continues working his way up, Stun Gun vs. Fitch would be such a good scrap.

Why? Because Kim can win that fight. He will be vulnerable to the single and double leg takedown, like anyone else against Fitch not named Georges, but he likely has an edge in every other aspect of the grappling game, and his transitions and escapes are downright crafty.
