Tim Sylvia wants to fight Alistair Overeem: (audio)

"I would definitely like to get back in the UFC or Strikeforce. We have talked with Strikeforce but right now we don’t know what is happening right now. There is guys I want to fight in both shows."

"I would imagine Strikeforce would be better for me because they would be a little more lenient with me instead of locking me down."

"I want to fight Overeem, Fedor again, Werdum is a good fight and me and Rogers would be a good fight. Arlovski I think would be [like our fight] number three again, me knocking him out. I think I ruined the poor guy, since I knocked him out he hasn’t been the same."

"I had guys over 350 lbs lay on me just to see if I can sub them or get them off me and get back to my feet."

"I think when I hit him [Mariusz Pudzianowski] with a left hook or a straight right he will crumble," he says. "I don’t think he has been hit."

Sadly, big Tim’s day’s as an elite HW are over much like that of Arlovski. With that being said I couldn’t ever see him in the UFC again but a Strikefrorce cage wouldn’t be a bad place for him.

by Red Dragons on May 18, 2010 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

Tim’s day as an “elite” HW ended when the HW division started getting a bit fuller of talent.

I don’t think anyone ever really considered Tim an elite heavyweight. Just the best of what the UFC had at the time. The best in the world in that division were elsewhere. (Pride etc.)

by lightmyf1re on May 18, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Even at that time, I think it would be hard to say he was outside of the top 5 or 6

Who would be above him?

Fedor, Big Nog, Cro Cop, Barnett, Arlovski….

Some of those are debatable as well…

by truck on May 18, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s sort of like people rating fighters outside of the UFC so highly now…Tim was never a very good fighter. Never a top ten guy, but he won a bunch of fights in a weak division.

I guess it is speculation, but guys like Aleks Emelianenko, Semmy Schilt, Werdum, Heath Herring and Mark Hunt were much better fighters by nearly any measure. I think it is also pretty clear guys like Randleman or Coleman (mid-2000s) would have given him a hard time.

by lightmyf1re on May 18, 2010 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

By the time Sylvia was in the UFC title picture, Randleman and Coleman were already losing to LHW’s, Aleks Emelianenko, Semmy Schilt, Heath Herring were beating similarly weak competition and Mark Hunt only had one noteable win in his career. The division on the whole had lots of question marks.

I don’t think he should be written off as easily as he is…

by truck on May 18, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Really you think Heath Herring and Hunt were better then Tim back in the day ? I think Tim beats them bolth back then and beats them bolth now. I also think a fight with Alex, Schilt and Werdum would be close to even.

by Shocbomb on May 18, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Werdum and Aleks would beat him

especially aleks.
schilt is just like sylvia. He’s not really a good stand up guy, just too big to hit or takedown.

by LeeroyJenkin$ on May 18, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually think a in shape Big Tim and Alex would be a pretty decent fight. Bolth could Ko each other and I could see Tim pulling out a decision buy just jabbing Alex the whole time like he did to Arlovski in there 3rd fight and the Vera fight. As for a Werdum fight I would pick Werdum but could aslo see Tim pulling out a decision in that fight just like Arlovski did buy stayinh on the outside and pumping jabs.

by Shocbomb on May 18, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

isn’t Schilt like a 4-time K1 WGP winner? can you do that without actually being a good standup guyand just being to big to hit? is the ability to use length properly not a skill?

i want to be only the Semmy Schilt’s standup is overratedwagon, but i don’t know if its allowable

by Stillberry on May 18, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

wait a minute...

schilt isnt a good stand up guy you say?

by fergler on May 18, 2010 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I really can’t stand BIG Tim but like it or not he was a top 5 HW for years and thats pretty dam Elite if you ask me and most other fans. Sure even though he does not have all that much talent and is far from a good athlete his size mixed with his stand up ability and hard work did theJob for years at HW. Fast foward to modern MMA and the HW devision I myself don’t ever see BIG Tim being a top 10 HW again ? His days of being at the top of the devision on size and average stand up and hard work are long gone. At this time and in the future he will have to work hard to stay in the top 20 at HW. No matter what though he should always be able to find a nice little payday and be able to headline MMA shows for the forseeable future.

Tim, Tim, Tim.
I actually want to see him succeed or at least be a bit more competitive. I really hope he doesn’t embarass himself against Mariusz.

Did you see Pudzianowski]’s last fight ? Just buy that fight alone I think Tim has a great chance at not only winning this fight but getting the KO/TKO on Pudzianowski.

by Shocbomb on May 18, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Tim’s experience alone – INCLUDING – his loss to Ray Mercer should do more than help him secure the W.

I can probably name 10 Heavyweights who I would bet my house on over you.

by olimario on May 18, 2010 10:38 AM EDT reply actions

If he wins this fight, I think Strikeforce would be wise to sign him.

Even if they are shadows of their former selves, Silvia and Arlovski are still name fighters who can be used to test some younger prospects, plus there are a few interesting fights in there.

Mixing fights with Overeem, Silvia, Arlovski, Rogers, Big Foot, Werdum, Del Rosario, Lashley and Fedor would make for a couple interesting match ups.

I think sacrificing Sylvia to the Reem or Fedor would be a borderline irresponsible thing for a promoter to do.

On another very relevant note...

Does Strikeforce sign Pudz if he wins?

Maybe we see Pudz vs Lashley in a retard muscle match…

Level of talent in the HW is high right now, with all the talents coming out.

Unfortunately it ain’t a molehill anymore. If he can string a couple more wins together, I can definitely see him in Strikeforce.

Delusional

Sylvia thinks he’s the one who ended Arlovski’s career? He went on a 5 fight win streak against decent competition (after his decision victory which was their 3rd fight not a knockout like Tim said which was the second fight) so I don’t know how he thinks he was the one who ruined Arlovski….I really hope Pudz beats Sylvia now, I just got remembered why I hated Sylvia so much.

by DCJon. on May 18, 2010 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

Timmah's still got delusions of grandeur.

You fought twice in ’09, one of which was a loss to a 49-year-old man, the other was a win over a nobody. How ’bout you work your way back a little bit before you start throwing out the names of elite heavyweights.

Timmah has no humility. He never has. That’s why he never gets better. Don’t take my word for it: Hughes said the same thing, calling him out even when they were still teammates.

Although detractors decry (MMA) as a brutal, bloody form of human cockfighting, aficionados know it is a brutal, bloody, totally fucking awesome form of human cockfighting. -The Onion

Poor Tim...

To think that he was once the UFC HW Champ. The HW division has evolved so much throughout the last few years. It’s hard to see Tim make any kind of splash again. I remember when the UFC tried to make Tim look like this massive force! lol There just wasn’t enough talent, that is until Frank Mir snapped his arm. After that submission, he was never the same again. He would walk down opponents, and at least try to use his size. After that experience, it creeped too far into his head where he was too tentative. Everytime he got taken to the ground, he looked horrified! Arlovski submitted him rather quick in their first fight. I mean, so what if he KO’d Arlovski in there 2nd fight, Andre’s chin is the equivalent to “Glass Joe’s” chin from Mike Tyson’s punchout! Then he gets dropped with a right, and loses to a much smaller Randy Couture. Get’s choked out by Nog, which I still think he tapped too quick instead making an effort of getting out. Get’s completely destroyed by Fedor! To top it off, get’s KO’d by an old Ray Mercer.

What a talespin….poor dude! He still thinks he can hang with the Top Tier HW’s. If I were him, I’d retire after this fight with a former “World’s Strongest Man” In Marius. I think that Mercer KO messed him up. I mean look at his qoute….

“There is guys I want to fight in both shows.”

THERE IS GUYS?!!! I mean, I know he’s from Iowa….but damn!

People are being too hard on Timmeh.
He was a Top 10 HW even though it was in a generally weaker division in 06/07.

He could be a nice gatekeeper in SF or the UFC if he doesn’t demand too much money

by KOQ24 on May 18, 2010 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

I agree...

He was annihilating Nog for two rounds before he go careless. I’m a HUGE Nog fan too.

I think the Mercer thing killed him, but any HW dumb enough to stand with Mercer get’s KO’d.

Tim may not be a contender ever again but i’m not ready to count him totally out yet.

by xfreekx on May 18, 2010 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Tim vs. Bigfoot could get some interest, provided Pudz doesn’t beat the mutton chops off him.

by CaptnAmerca on May 18, 2010 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

Well..

I’d watch a Tim Sylvia vs. Brock Lesnar. I’d love to see Brock Lesnar GnP, as he would call him, good old “Swamp Thing” into submission!

by JAFOrlando26 on May 18, 2010 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

Tim's an interesting relic from the 'old days of MMA'

He’s not particularly great at any one thing, but he can outstrike MMA-caliber strikers and use his size to get back to his feet after takedowns. This is perfect for knocking out guys like Gan Mcgee, fending off a guy like Jeff Monson, beating up on Nogueira for a couple of rounds, and even using his jab and knockout threat to decision Arlovski, but he’s toast in, say, a pure boxing, kickboxing, or wrestling match, and he doesn’t have the natural athleticism to best guys who are both big and skilled like the new generation of heavyweights. Bigfoot Silva, for instance, would likely slaughter him.

by Trust Doesn't Rust on May 18, 2010 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

Like with how I feel with most veterans that are past their prime, if Strikeforce or someone wants to use Tim Sylvia to fight prospects and be a “gatekeeper” of sorts, then I wouldn’t mind the UFC or especially Strikeforce to sign him. As far as making a Title run or fighting top competition, Sylvia hasn’t shown anything that indicates that he can fight top-tier Heavyweights anymore.
